On the SF Giants podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris, the San Diego Padres (22-14) Manny Machado was being Manny again three doubles and a triple he had an MVP type game lending to the Padres 10-1 laugher and series sweep on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants (22-18).

#2 For Machado it was a career high and tied the Padres all time record for extra base hits in a ball game Machado also picked up two RBIs. Becoming the eighth Padre to accomplish four extra base hits in a game.

#3 The Padres improve their record to four games over .500 and Machado said after the game that San Diego is a good ball club and said that if things continue this way things will fall into place.

#4 The Giants brought in relief pitcher Luis Gonzalez who had been playing in rightfield. Gonzalez who pitched against the Padres in the top of the seventh got the side in order and came out again in the top of the eight giving up a hit but again got out of the inning unscathed after two a 80 plus MPH change up and mostly 48 MPH lob balls that kept the hitters off balance.

#5 The New York Mets (28-15) who are one of baseball’s hottest teams come to Oracle Park to open a three game series with the Giants on Monday night. Starting pitcher for the Mets lefthander David Peterson (1-0, 1.89) Peterson will be opposed by Giant starter Alex Cobb (3-1, 5.61) a 6:45 pm PDT first pitch.

Golden State Warriors podcast with Barbara Mason: NBA fines Mavericks $100,000 for bench violations; Warriors on the brink of eliminating Mavericks

Here the Dallas Mavericks bench chose to stand for much of game 2 in this Fri May 20, 2022 photo at Chase Center in San Francisco where they were fined for bench violations in games 1, 2, and 3 as if they didn’t have enough problems trying to win a game against the Golden State Warriors in the current third round NBA Western Conference Finals (AP News photo)

On the Warrior podcast with Barbara:

#1 If problems haven’t compounded for the Dallas Mavericks who are now on the brink of elimination down 3-0 to the Golden State Warriors after a game 3 loss on Sunday night the Mavericks were fined by the NBA $100,000 for a third bench violation. Dallas players were either standing too long or coming onto or near the court. Fines doubled each time starting at $25,000, $50,000 and now $100,000 after Sunday’s game.

#2 Barbara, knowing how Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is animated, vocal and involved on the sidelines of his team is he the type of owner that will roll heads if the Mavericks were to get swept in this series?

#3 There was no stopping the Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry who scored 31 points and Andrew Wiggins who had 27 points that pretty much froze out the Mavericks in the second half of the game.

#4 For the Mavericks Luka Doncic he had to carry most of the weight scoring a team leading 41 points while teammate Spencer Dinwiddie was a distant second in scoring with 26 points.

#5 It’s either win big or go home for the Mavericks in game 4 on Tuesday night as Dallas has their last chance to defeat Golden State on their home floor. Meanwhile the Warriors have lots of confidence entering what could be the final game of this third round of playoffs.

Earthquakes battle Sporting KC to a 1-1 draw

The San Jose Earthquakes celebrate Jackson Yueill’s equalizer goal to start the second half in their 1-1 draw with Sporting Kansas City at Pay Pal Park on Sun May 22, 2022 (VCP Soccer photo).

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Earthquakes outplayed Sporting Kansas City for 90 minutes but had to settle for one point in a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at Pay Pal Park.

San Jose is unbeaten in four straight matches and are now 6-1-2 since interim head coach Alex Covelo took over the reigns of the team. Sporting KC is 1-4-4 in their past nine matches.

San Jose (3-5-5) dominated the first half as they controlled the possession and had the majority of the scoring chances including a three-minute from the 40th-43rd minutes where they created three good scoring chances only to have Sporting KC goalkeeper Tim Melia keep the ball out of the net.

“I think in the first half, we didn’t occupy the right spaces to advance. We were trying to find Jamiro [Monteiro] and Jackson [Yueill]. We didn’t need them falling back as we saw. We knew we needed to fix something in the second half,” Covelo said.

Melia had four saves in the opening 45 minutes.

Despite being outplayed in the first half, Sporting KC (3-7-4) ended drawing first blood in the 45th minute when Cam Duke outwaited Quakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski on the left side of the box before centering the ball to Johnny Russell. The veteran striker tapped home the ball into an empty net for his co-team leading fourth goal of the season.

It didn’t take long for San Jose to answer back to start the second half. In the 46th minute, Jamiro Monteiro sent a cross into the box to an unmarked Jackson Yueill. The Quakes captain headed the ball past a diving Melia for his third goal of the season.

“In the second half, Jackson was tired and felt something in his leg, so we tried to put [Jan] Gregus and Chofis to find more in between lines and create more chances because we were very low. That’s why we made those substitutions,” said Covelo.

The Quakes had Sporting KC back on their heels in the last 10 minutes of the match but weren’t able to earn three point and instead had to settle for one against a team that wasn’t aggressive in the second half.

Oscar Agren made his debut in a Quakes uniform as he started at right center back for Covelo and played all 90 minutes of the match. Chofis, who came in as a substitute in the 68th minute for Monteiro, played in his first match since missing the past nine due to an upper thigh injury.

“It felt good to be out there and get the debut,” said Agren. “I’m very appreciative for that. The game was pretty calm, I thought overall.”

Marcinkowski finished the match with one save on two shots on target. Malia made four saves on five shots.

GAME NOTES: Each team finished the match with four corner kicks.

San Jose is now 25-28-10 all-time vs. Sporting KC in MLS play, including a 17-7-8 record at home.

Sporting Kansas City has lost only one of its last 12 matches against San Jose (W7 D4, including a penalty shootout win). Sporting has won three of its last six visits to San Jose after going winless in 18 straight matches at the Earthquakes from 2001 to April 2016 (D5 L13, incl. playoffs).

San Jose had its three consecutive home matches winning streak snapped. Going back to last season, San Jose has lost only one of its last 11 home league games (W4 D6), a 3-1 defeat to the Red Bulls on the opening day of this season.

Dániel Sallói scored both goals for SKC in their Wednesday win and also received one of their red cards, after being sent off in the waning moments of the match. Sallói is the fifth player in MLS history to notch a brace and be sent off in the same match, joining Ted Chronopoulos, Taylor Twellman, Obafemi Martins and Ola Kamara.

UP NEXT: San Jose travels down to SoCal to take on LAFC on Saturday 5/28 at 3:00pm at Banc of California Stadium.

Warriors Take A Commanding Series Lead 3-0

By Barbara Mason

The Golden State Warriors (3-0) traveled to Dallas to take on the Mavericks (0-3) in Game Three of the Western Conference Finals on Sunday. The Warriors came out of it with a 109-100 win in Dallas to move up in the series 3-0 and are on the brink of sweeping the series.

The Warriors came out in the first quarter with great energy jumping to a 14-7 lead early. They went on a 10-0 run in the first quarter before Dallas really got going.

Luka Doncic would finish the quarter with a 32-foot three pointer. After the first 12 minutes the Warriors held a slim 25-22 lead. The Mavericks had really heated up as the clock ran out on the first quarter.

The Maverick’s took a lead early in the second quarter. Both teams were struggling from downtown shooting at 22%. Dallas would jump to a nine point lead in the second but Golden State would fight back to take a 48-47 lead into the locker room.

The Warriors would lose Otto Porter Jr. in the quarter who went to the locker room for x-rays on his left foot. This was a significant loss for the Warriors. Porter has been an essential part of Golden State’s success in the past two games offensively and defensively. He was unable to return to the game.

The Warriors began to have turnover issues and coupled with struggles shooting in the second quarter they could not get away with poor ball control going forward.

The Warriors extended their lead in the third quarter leading after three 78-68. Golden State had outscored Dallas 30-21 in the quarter. It would all come down to the fourth quarter for the Warriors. Ball control and execution would decide this game.

The Warriors took a 14 point lead in the fourth quarter. The Mavericks continued to fight trimming the lead to eight but Golden State relentlessly pushed back. Jordan Poole made two crucial long shots to ice this game.

Dallas had trouble shooting the ball in the final quarter and desperately needed stops which just didn’t happen. Golden State had taken a commanding 3-0 lead in the series winning.

Stephen Curry finished with 31 points. Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson rounded out the top numbers, Wiggins with 27 and Thompson with 19.

The two long balls in the final minutes from Poole made all the difference. This was an amazing team effort. Offensive rebounding was just one more plus for Golden State. Kevon Looney finished with 12 rebounds and Wiggins with 11.

The Warriors will play game four on Tuesday night looking to finish off Dallas in game four.. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

One Run Or Fewer: A’s offense continues to struggle in 4-1 loss at Anaheim

By Morris Phillips

Look at the A’s schedule: they haven’t seen much AL West competition thus far, and with those teams that know them best up now, the obvious conclusion is that things could get worse.

Things got worse this weekend in Anaheim. For that, the A’s can point to Patrick Sandoval and Shohei Ohtani. We’ll call them the usual suspects.

Ohtani homered–as did Mike Trout–and the Angels cruised to a 4-1 win over the A’s as Sandoval deftly managed his effective offerings to reach the eighth inning. If the score and result looks familiar, it’s because it is. Last Sunday in Oakland, Sandoval cruised, and Ohtani homered in the first inning in the A’s 4-1 loss. This first round of AL West rival action clearly goes to Anaheim, winners of five of the first seven of 19 contests between the clubs.

The toothless A’s have dropped 20 of 29 after an encouraging 8-6 start to the season. And Sunday marked the 16th time the team has scored one run or fewer (1-15 in those games). Against Sandoval, the A’s managed three singles and Kevin Smith’s eighth inning double. Christian Pache, mired in a 1 for 23 stretch, knocked in Smith for the A’s only run.

“For my money, when he has fastball command, he should normally be pitching in the seventh, eighth, ninth inning,” manager Joe Maddon said of Sandoval. “The way his stuff is, they don’t get good swings at it. Don’t get good looks at it.”

Sandoval’s brilliance allowed the Angels’ bats to be patient with A’s starter Cole Irvin, who was returning from a stint on the injured list. The Angels got single runs in the first, second and fifth against Irvin. Trout homered off Justin Grimm in the seventh, a laser inside the left field foul pole.

The A’s are 2-5 in a stretch of games against divisional opponents that continues through June 1. Seattle is next, then Texas and Houston. The A’s will have to pick up their offense to compete. But their gutty starters have faltered as of late too. Irvin’s loss on Sunday drops the Oakland starters to 0-6 over the last 10 games.

But the issues don’t stop there: seven A’s errors over the last nine games have the defense showing wear. Thirty errors in 43 games ranks the team near the bottom of the American League.

On Monday, the A’s open a three-game set against the Mariners in Seattle with Zach Logue facing Marco Gonzales.

Padres win in a laugher 10-1; Giants Gonzalez retires Padres in relief in two innings

San Diego Padres Eric Hosmer makes it into first coasting as San Francisco Giants first baseman Wilmer Flores can’t find the handle on the ball as Giants pitcher John Brebbia watches the play unfold at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Sun May 22, 2022 (AP News photo)

San Diego. 10. 17. 0

San Francisco. 1. 4. 1

Sunday May 22, 2022

By Lewis Rubman

SAN FRANCISCO–Hoping to salvage one game of what had been ahard fought three game series against the San Diego Padres, the 22-17 San Francisco Giants sent veteran left hander Alex Wood (3-2,3.93) to battle against the 26-14 friars.

When the game was over, the Giants stood at 22-18, the Padres at 27-14, and Wood at 3-3, 4.82. He had lasted a scant three innings plus and was charged with five runs on eight hits and two walks. He threw 73 pitches, 50 of which were strikes. Of course, every batted ball from a weak foul through a home run counts as a strike. But he did strike out four opponents.

The Giants’ starter, who features a four seamer, change up, curve, and slider, was matched against fellow southpaw MacKenzie Gore (2-1,2.17 at game time), the third overall pick in the 2017 draft, This was the first time he pitched against an NL West rival.

He threw three shutout innings against the Phillies last Tuesday, the first and only time he pitched out of the bullpen in his professional career. He has the same inventory of deliveries as Wood, although he uses them in a different order of frequency.

The San Diego prospect left, assured of his third victory, after six brilliant innings in which he surrendered one run, earned, on three hits a walk, striking out a half a dozen Giants. He threw 90 pitches, 54 for strikes and reduced his ERA to 2.06.

Before the game, the Giants announced that they had placed Brandon Belt on the 10 day injured list effective May 19 as a result of the inflammation of his right knee. They recalled third baseman Kevin Padlo from the PCL, where he was hitting a combined .238 for Tacoma and Sacramento.

The visitors jumped out to an early lead. The Manny You Love to Hate laced into Wood’s first pitch to him, a sinker, for a one out double to left center and came around to score on Jurickson Profar’s infield single and Wil Myers’ single to left.

They doubled down on that one run in the second on a leadoff double by Ha-Seong Kim, a double to left center by Austin Nola, and Jake Cronenworth’s sac fly to center.

Wood managed to hold the Padres to a single in the third, but he couldn’t resist their onslaught in the fourth. Nola led off with a full count walk and moved up to second on Azocar’s single to center.

After smacking a splash foul, Jake Cronenworth brought Nola home with a single to center that moved Azocar to third and ended the day for Wood. Mashing Manny greeted John Brebbia, Wood’s successor, with a double that would have been a single if Darin Ruf hadn’t attempted a diving catch in left.

That brought in both runners, and it was 5-0, Pads. Profar grounded out to third, and Hosmer hit an in offensive grounder to first that Flores bobbled for an error.

San Diego’s first sacker advanced to second on a passed ball. Both he and Machado then crossed the plate on Myers’ rule book double to left. At last, Nola, who had walked to start the inning, struck out to end it.

The long wait in the dugout for the top of the fourth to end seemed to affect pitching. He walked Ruf on four pitches, and Yaztremski drove an 87 mph slider against the wall in right center for a double, sending Ruf to third. He scored on Flores’s sac fly to right.

It took only three pitches for Gore to fan Longoria, so when Azocar corralled Crawford’s drive in the deepest part of centerfield, it was the third out and the end of the Giants’ micro rally.

Jack Littell, replacing Brebbia in the fifth, became the third San Francisco hurler to be scored upon. He managed to retire the first two men he faced, but the third was Machado, who bettered his earlier double by a base with a triple to right center. He waltzed home on Profar’s single to right, and San Diego was up 8-1.

One inning later, and Littell still was on the mound. Myers hit a grounder to short that ate up Crawford and wound up as a single in left center. Then Luke Voit lifted a fly to left. Ruf went back for it, then came in for it, then looked at loss, and finally picked it up after it fell for a single that allowed Myers to score the Pad’s ninth run.

Voit went to third on Kim’ double to left and took San Diego’s run total into double digits on Azocar’s RBI groundout to short.

It was the turn of Mauricio Llovera, starting the seventh, to be bedeviled by Machado, who lashed a ground ball at Crawford, who once again was just a fraction of a second late in gathering in the ball, which skipped by him into left center field while Manny motored into second with a leg double. But Llovera held firm and escaped unscored upon.

Craig Stammen relieved Gore in the seventh and set San Francisco down in order. Luis Gonzalez in a reprise of his performance against Albert Pujols pulled a Pablo, and pitched a perfect top of the eighth.

He then hit a one out single in the home half of the inning. The Padres managed one hit, a Cronenworth two bagger off the right field wall in the ninth, but González closed out his line with two scoreless innings.

Steven Wilson set the Giants down 1-2-3 to close out the dismal game and series.

The NL East leading Mets come to town tomorrow to test the meddle of the faltering orange and gold. Game time is 6:45. David Peterson (1-0,1.89) will throw for the New Yorkers, and Alex Cobb (3-1,5.61) will take the mound for the Giants.

Headline Sports podcast with Bruce Magowan: Padres should be a post season team; When Tatis returns they could dominate NL West; plus much more

The San Diego Padres Fernando Tatis Jr who is seen here during Sep 25, 2022 game against the Atlanta Braves is on the IL but could be a help the Padres dominate the NL West upon his return. (AP News photo)

On Headline Sports with Bruce:

The San Diego Padres who wrapped up a three game series with the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. San Diego really underachieved by not making the playoffs last season which was a major disappointment after bringing in Manny Machado. There is no question when Fernando Tatis Jr returns he can help the club but hasn’t been healthy of late and on the IL. There is no question the Padres really have some good pitching.

I would really be surprised if the Padres don’t make the playoffs. The Giants best bet would be to get a wild card and they could end up playing the Padres. The Los Angeles Dodgers, Padres and Giants are three of the best teams in baseball.

The Giants are probably number eight in baseball which is pretty good their a team that nobody expected to win last season and their still winning this season with a makeshift line up sometimes. Also remnants of the old Candlestick Park days last Friday when fans threw beer bottles and a baseball at the San Diego Padres Jurickson Profar who was playing leftfield who later called the Giants fans “the worst fans in baseball.”

Profar is a utility guy whose playing leftfield right now he’s one of those guys you won’t call him a hothead but he’s hyper he’s very open he’s like the Golden State Warriors Draymond Green you either love him or you hate him.

A’s come up short losing to Angels 5-3

Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout makes it home for his 1,000th career run without a throw to the plate as Oakland Athletics catcher Sean Murphy, left is empty handed, on an infield hit by the Angels Luis Rengifo on Sat May 21, 2022 at the Big A in Anaheim (AP News photo)

A’s Come Up Short Losing To Angels 5-3

By Barbara Mason

Saturday evening the Oakland A’s (17-25) took on the Los Angeles Angels (25-17) in game two of their series dropping the contest 5-3 at the Big A in Anaheim. Friday night the A’s won the first game 4-2 and were hoping to add game two to their win column.

The game remained scoreless through the first four frames. There was some bad news for Oakland when pitcher Frankie Montas who suffered a hand injury. He was forced to leave the game in the bottom of the second inning when he was clipped in the right hand while fielding a line drive hit off the bat of Luis Rengifo.

He did practice a few pitches but just could not continue. Domingo Acevedo took over on the mound. The A’s had to lean on their bullpen for the rest of the game.

The Angels really turned it up in the fifth inning. Rengifo hit a solo homer for the first score in this game 1-0. Once this team got going their was no stopping them. They would score in the sixth and seventh innings.

Shohei Otani and Mike Trout both crossed the plate in the sixth frame extending their lead to 3-0. Trout scored his 1,000 career run a huge milestone in his career. Andrew Velazquez hit a home run in the seventh inning driving Tyler Wade home and the Angels had a significant 5-0 lead going into the eighth inning.

Oakland made a lot of noise in the eighth frame. Sheldon Neuse hit a single driving Kevin Smith home. Next at bat Jed Lowrie hit a double and Neuse scored.

Lowrie would score on an Oliver Ortega wild pitch so the top of the eighth was a good one for Oakland scoring three runs. They would have the ninth inning to try to put some more runs up on the board.

The Angels would put the A’s away in the ninth inning. The final was 5-3 in favor of the Halo’s.

It was a tough one for Oakland but waiting until the eighth inning to start putting runs up on the board, especially with the Angels leading 5-0, was a difficult task for the A’s. It was a game of missed opportunity for Oakland.

Oakland pitcher Lou Trivino had a very tough outing giving up several hits and walking in a run. He couldn’t get anything going in this game.

The rubber game will feature the return of the A’s Cole Irvin (2-1, 2.93) vs. the Angels Patrick Sandoval (2-1, 1.91) who will be on the mound for the Angels. First pitch is scheduled at the Big A for 1:07.
