Barracuda end preseason on a high note beating Condors 5-2

SAN JOSE- The Barracuda remained undefeated beating the Condors at home by a final of 5-2.

Getting the start in goal was Eetu Makiniemi while the Condors had Tyler Parks in between the pipes.

This one did not get off to a great start for the Barracuda as just less than a minute in Tyler Tullio scored for Bakersfield.

A power play for San Jose ended up doing the trick tying this one back up as Danil Gushchin scored.

The first period continued to be back-and-forth as the Condors responded with a goal from Matthew Wedman.

Once again though the Cuda got a response this time from Justin Bailey who tied the game back up at 2-2.

At the end of a high-flying second, the shots favored San Jose 13-11.

Rather than giving up an early one in the second San Jose instead potted the first goal as Tristen Robins put the puck in the net.

The Barracuda tacked on to their lead with another goal in the second this time from Leon Gawanke.

Looking to try and come back Bakersfield would pull their goalie late in the third down 4-2. Instead of tying the game up though they gave up an empty netter as Nathan Todd sealed the deal at 18:56.

Makiniemi had a stellar night making 35 saves while Parks made 22 saves in the loss.

The Barracuda will open their season on Friday, October 13 against the Rockford IceHogs at home.

Barracuda upend Condors 3-2 in OT in preseason opener

BAKERSFIELD, CA – The San Jose Barracuda battled it out on Friday night at the Mechanics Bank Arena, as they defeated the Bakersfield Condors 3-2 in overtime.  

The first period saw the Barracuda pick up the first goal of the game with Brandon Coe tipping in a Shakir Mukhamadullin shot at the 2:57 mark. When both teams were 4-on-4, Adam Raška showed a display of individual effort to pick up an unassisted goal 12:56 into the period. San Jose finished the period leading 2-0. 

In the second period, Xavier Bourgault put the Condors on the board at 10:12 of the middle frame. Following the Bakersfield goal, San Jose completed a planned goalie swap with Georgi Romanov taking over for Magnus Chrona in net. 

At the 16:11 of the third period, Bourgault picked up his second of the night to tie the game and neither team would be able to find the regulation winner. 

With 1:15 remaining in overtime, 2022-23 Sharks prospect of the year Ethan Cardwell scored the game winner for his unofficial first goal in the American Hockey League 

Tyler Parks (BAK) finished the night with 23 saves on 26 Barracuda shots while Chrona went 22/23 and Romanov stopped 15 of the 16 shots he faced. 

The Barracuda ended the night 0-for-4 on the power play. The Condors went 1-for-5 on the man advantage. 

Jackie Young and the Aces Win Game One Over the Liberty 99-82

The Aces Jackie Young led the charge with 26 points giving Las Vegas a game one win 99-82 in the opening game of this championship series at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas.

Sunday afternoon the Las Vegas Aces (1-0) embarked on the first leg of their quest for a second championship. They took on the New York Liberty (0-1) in what promises to be a fight to the end.

As expected both teams came out strong in the first quarter with the Liberty narrowly taking the early lead 25-22. The second quarter was all knotted at 24-24. New York took a 49-46 lead into the locker room at the half.

All season, the Aces have notoriously been a second half team especially in the fourth quarter when they have time after time put games away. They would need a strong second half if they wanted to get past New York.

One reason that the Liberty had this lead was due to the deep shooting from bench player Marine Johannes who was 4 of 7 from beyond the arc and finished with 14 points.

The Aces turned it on the third quarter winning it 26-16 and taking a 72-65 lead proving their mastery in the second half of games. They did not back down as this game went into the fourth quarter playing with more intention and skill.

Going on a 9-0 run the Aces took the first double digit lead of the game 78-65 with 7:21 left in the game. Las Vegas’ Jackie Young was on fire already shooting for 26 points with nearly seven minutes left in the game.

The Aces had begun to take control of this first game of the finals. Las Vegas had a strangle hold on the Liberty forcing turnovers and desperate shot selection. The Aces continued to extend their lead in the final minutes of the game taking a 92-72 lead.

The Liberty were faced with having to speed up the game if they were to have any chance of winning leaving the door open for error. In all fairness, the Liberty continued to fight making some clutch three’s but as they began to put the starters on the bench they were clearly resigned to the eventual outcome. The Las Vegas ladies were brilliant in this second half winning game one by the score of 99-82.

The heartbeat of Las Vegas Chelsea Gray was seen throughout the game cheering, pushing and encouraging her team. She had 20 points along with Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young’s 26 points apiece.

Plum was totally exploited in the past few season games against the Liberty and she evidently had had enough and it really showed in this game. In the second half, the Aces defense on the outside really showed up limiting New York to a single shot from downtown.

A’Ja Wilson finished with 8 rebounds and 19 points. It took the opening half for the Aces to really get on track and once the second half hit, Las Vegas turned into a run-away train impossible to stop. They shot at 54% from the field and 40% from outside.

The Liberty had four starters in double digits with Breanna Steward the high score with 21 points and nine rebounds. New York may have lost the first game of this series but the battle has just begun and there is a long way yet to go.

Aces post game notes: These teams know each other so well and both teams have had success against each other during the regular season. Back in late June the Aces had a dominate win over the Liberty 98-81.

The Liberty crushed Las Vegas on August 6, 99-61 followed by a second win on August 15 by the score of 82-63. Two days later the Aces came back beating the Liberty 88-75. In this see-saw relationship the Liberty had yet another win over the Aces 94-85 in late August, the final time they would meet prior to the playoffs.

This finals has all the makings of some hard-fought battles from the two best teams in the WNBA.

Game Two will be played on Wednesday October 11th with tipoff scheduled for 6:00 PM. This second game of the series will again be played at Michelob ULTRA Arena with the Aces looking to take a 2-0 lead into New York.

#1 Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw got rocked by the Arizona Diamondback for six runs in the first inning facing eight hitters and didn’t get out of the first inning at Dodger Stadium on Saturday night. In the first game of the NLDS in the Southland the D-Backs came away a winning in a laugher 11-2 to take a 1-0 series lead.

#2 The Atlanta Braves had momentum going into the NLDS but that sharpness got dulled as the visiting Philadelphia Phillies got some good pitching from starter Ranger Suarez who went 3.2 and gave up one hit. Suarez’ relief staff teammates seven pitcher in all shut the Braves out for the rest of the way for the 3-0 win. As the Phils take a 1-0 lead in the series. This was the first time the Braves had lost all year at Truist Park in Cobb County.

#3 Charlie, how key was Houston Astros starter Justin Verlander’s pitching six inning of shutout ball against the Minnesota Twins in game 1 of the ALDS. The Twins tried to comeback in the top of the seventh at Minute Maid Field with four runs but the Astros relievers held the Twins hitting back and came away with a 6-4 win.

#4 Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Gunnar Henderson’s second base steal attempt a miscommunication in the bottom of the ninth. The O’s were down to the Texas Rangers 3-2 and Gunnar said he saw the steal sign and took off on a 2-1 Aaron Hicks pitch. Henderson was thrown out on a Jonah Heim throw. Hyde was seen on TV saying “What the F—.”

#5 Charlie sad news former San Francisco Giants pitcher Jim Poole who pitched for seven different MLB teams and the bulk of his time was with Baltimore Orioles died of ALS Lou Gehrig’s decease at 57. Poole had been diagnosed two years ago with ALS. Poole made 431 appearances and was 22-12 with four saves and a career ERA 4.31.

Oregon State Walks Out Of Berkeley Victorious After 52-40 win against Cal

Berkeley, CA – On homecoming night at University of Cal, it’s the Cal Bears against the Oregon State University Beavers and the Bears are coming off a great win against Arizona State University, but the Beavers are coming off an equally great win against a ranked Utah squad. Cal walks into this game with a clear swagger and a win for either team would propel them up the ranks in the Pac-12.

Unfortunately Cal lost at home in a highly offensive game of scoring and fell short to Oregon State 52-40. Cal drops to .500 at 3-3.

Cal starts with the ball to open the game and the drive goes nowhere for the Bears and Oregon State takes over on possession and immediately starts pushing down field. In the red zone the Beavers score with ease as DJ Uiagalelei throws a dime to tight end Jack Velling and after an easy extra point, the Beavers take the early lead 7-0.

Cal’s attempt to even the score began as Cal utilized their lead running back Jaydn Ott, but was still forced to punt when even those attempts were foiled by OSU’s defense. The Beavers start out in their own red zone and being pinned there causes the Beavers to have to pass out of the jam, but to no success as they were forced to punt.

Cal’s next drive was more effective as they got down field with a variety of passes and rushes. The quarter ends with the ball still in Cal’s hands in the red zone with a chance to even out the game. 

On the fourth down the Bears decide to settle for the field goal and we start the second quarter 7-3. A major kickoff return for Oregon State goes 59 yards and they start this drive with amazing field position. Again in the red zone, Oregon State had the ball and on four plays Aiden Chiles hit Silas Bolden in the end zone and the Beavers put a gap in the score 14-0, but there was still a lot of ball game left and Cal started their next drive in the red zone after an onside recovery that they took back 26 yards.

Cal gets their first touchdown after Isaiah Ifanse got a nine yard pass from Fernando Mendoza and now it was a 14-10 ball game. On OSU’s drive, they made a big mistake when Cal forced a fumble and recovered it.

This is Cal’s seventh fumble recovery of the season and they are some of the best in the NCAA when it comes to forcing turnovers. Following that big recovery, the Bears offense pushed down the field using Ott and Ifanse and that strategy was effective when Ifanse walked in the end zone for an easy rushing touchdown and after an extra point, Cal had its first lead 17-14 with eight minutes left in the first half.

A trick play by OSU gets them downfield and back in the red zone, but while in the red zone, Cal was fighting in the trenches and forced a fourth and 1 for the Beavers, but a QB run for a yard kept the drive alive.

The Cal defense forced another fourth down attempt for the Beavers, but this time with 3 yards away from the end zone and they converted after Jack Velling caught his second touchdown catch, now the score being 21-17 Beavers up.

In the final minute of the game, Cal’s goal was to go in the locker room with some energy, but were forced to punt before the last eight seconds of the half and OSU took a knee which is how the first half closes. 

The second half started with a big return from the Beavers, 50 yards and a chance to take over early in the half. Cal has outscored their opponents this season in the second half, especially the third quarter, but that didn’t matter as Oregon State capitalized on the great field position when DJ Uiagalelei got a touchdown pass to Jesiah Irish and the Beavers made it 28-17.

Cal wasted no time on their following drive just moving the chains in such an efficient fashion that if you blinked you would’ve missed how far they traveled down field. This pursuit down the field was capitalized on as Ifanse powered through the Beavers O-Line and got another touchdown making it 28-24 and at this point Ifanse had all the touchdowns for the Bears.

The Beavers answered right back with a touchdown of their own with another TD catch from Velling making it 35-24 and the Bears had to respond. That response came after a big drive and the exclamation point was a 30 yard TD pass from Mendoza to Jack Endries and when the Bears converted on the two point attempt and the Cal fans went crazy! 35-32! The third quarter ended with OSU in the red zone on third down and the pendulum could swing any way at this moment. 

Oregon State got the TD to start the fourth as Damien Martinez powered his way into the endzone and they took the lead again 42-32. Cal started their drive with a force of energy, but fumbled the ball and the Beavers recovered the ball and now a chance to put this game away was in their hands.

The nail in the coffin for Oregon State was when Uiagalelei threw a pass to eligible receiver and DT Isaac Hodgins and now it was 49-32 Oregon State as Cal fans started to beat the traffic and head out the stadium.

The downfall wasn’t over for Cal as Mendoza attempted a throw, but was picked off by Jermod McCoy and at this point the game seemed over even though there were still ten minutes left on the clock. Oregon State even with a decisive lead was still pushing down the field just eating the clock down.

The Beavers walked away with a field goal and with two and a half minutes left, the Bears were fighting for pride as the clock ticked and ticked. Cal scored and executed on the two point conversion, but with a minute left, the game was in the bag. 

When the clock hit zero, the Bears fought, but the Beavers fought harder and the game ended with a 52-40 score and Oregon State walked away with a win. Cal shouldn’t be discouraged by this loss, because it showed them as a balanced team who can compete, just need some more elite players to match up against the big dogs.

Cal’s next game will be against Utah at Utah and the hopes for the Bears are a W.

Earthquakes fight FC Dallas to 1-1 draw stay 8th in the West

It’s going to take Decision Day 2023 to determine the two final playoff spots in the Western Conference.

The San Jose Earthquakes battled FC Dallas to a 1-1 draw on the second to last game of the season on Saturday evening at Toyota Stadium.

With the draw, San Jose stayed one point ahead of FC Dallas for the eighth spot in the Western Conference with 43 points. Two points separates five teams from eight to 11th place with Portland and San Jose tied with 43, FC Dallas with 42 and Sporting KC and Minnesota United both with 41 points.

FC Dallas has a game in hand as their game on Wednesday against the Colorado Rapids was postponed due to rain and has been rescheduled for October 14th at Toyota Stadium.

“The point is important. The point allows us to still have an edge. Now it’s very clear, we’re disappointed. We were winning and we didn’t close that out in a way to qualify tonight. So that’s disappointing. I thought we had a fantastic first half, getting pressure on the ball, attacking sequences, and defensive organization. The point is still going to give us some type of advantage with those other teams,” ‘Quakes head coach Luchi Gonzalez said.

The Earthquakes will advance to the playoffs with a win in two weeks on Decision Day against Austin FC, who were eliminated from playoff contention earlier in the day. A draw or loss might move them out of the eight-ninth play-in game to determine the eighth and final seed of the Western Conference Playoffs.

“Look, I’ve been around long enough to know that Decision Day is crazy. We can still finish seventh or maybe even higher. Games in hand have to be won, they’re not automatic three points. We will see how the other teams do and be ready to push for the highest position possible on the last day,” ‘Quakes forward Jeremy Ebobisse said.

San Jose (10-10-13) drew first blood in the third minute. Cristian Espinoza found captain Jackson Yueill along the right wing. Yueill centered a pass into the middle where Ebobisse slid feet first to punch the ball past FC Dallas goalkeeper Maarten Paes for his 10th goal of the season.

Ebobisse became third ‘Quakes to score 10 plus goals in back-to-back seasons joining Chris Wondolowski and Ronald Cerritos.

“When we came into the game from the beginning, we wanted to go for three [points]. We wanted to clinch playoffs tonight. We started off quite well in that. I think that [FC Dallas] were naturally going to get some chances and build some momentum at home as any home team would. We did a pretty good job of repelling those with guys making some plays. Ultimately that dam broke a little bit. You have to manage each situation. The point is still very valuable,” Ebobisse said.

FC Dallas (10-10-12) scored the equalizer in the 57th minute. Jesus Ferreira glided a pass up the middle of the pitch. Jader Obrian raced out and got in front of Tanner Beason before depositing the ball over ‘Quakes goalkeeper Daniel for his fifth goal of the season.

Daniel finished four saves on five shots on target. Paes made two saves on three shots on target from San Jose to earn the draw.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished with two corner kicks. FC Dallas had three.

The Quakes now hold a 29-21-22 record against FC Dallas, including a 12-13-10 record on the road. They have only lost once to Dallas in their last 13 MLS regular season matches (4-1-8)

Yueill’s fifth assist of the season was also his 17th of his MLS career.

Espinoza tallied his 13th assist of the season, furthering his own all-time club assist record to 57.

UP NEXT: San Jose concludes the regular season when they host Austin FC on Saturday 10/21 at 6:00pm at Pay Pal Park.

Warriors Take On Lakers In Preseason Opener With Kuminga and Moody Stealing the Show 125-108

Fans got to see an incredible show from the Warrior bench scoring 91 points and finishing off the Los Angeles Lakers 125-108.

It all began Saturday night. The Golden State Warriors (1-0) played the first of five preseason games taking on the rival Los Angeles Lakers (0-1) at the Chase Center in San Francisco. In the absence of Draymond Green who missed the game due to an ankle injury, the Warriors got their first look at Chris Paul who started this game with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

Kevon Looney and Andrew Wiggins rounded out the starting roster. How Paul will fit in whether on the starting roster or on the bench will begin to be revealed. The solid play of Paul is a welcome addition to the Warriors.

Paul rarely turns the ball over and with 18 years in the NBA he is a master with 21,755 points scored and 11,501 assists. Paul has played for so long at such a high level, Golden State is lucky to have him onboard. The Warriors did not see the Lakers LeBron James in this pre-season opener but saw plenty of Anthony Davis. James plans on playing in about half of the Lakers pre-season games.

Post game recap: The first quarter was all Thompson and Davis. Thompson finished the quarter with eight points and Davis with nine. The Warriors got to see 6’10” Dario Saric and 20 yr-old Brandin Podziemski off the bench.

Jonathan Kuminga finished off the quarter with his own exciting brand of play with some marque blocks, rebounds and passes just a preview of what the Warriors will see from him this season. After the opening quarter the Warriors had a 29-23 lead.

Mid-way through the second quarter the Warriors had expanded the lead to 18 points with 6:05 left in the half. The Lakers made a run as the second quarter came to an end. They had erased the Warriors 18 point lead but still trailed at the half 61-54.

Both teams played hard in this pre-season opener. It was an amazing half for the Golden State bench scoring 27 points to the Lakers 10. The Warriors bench will want to be, once again, a weapon and if this first half was any indication they will indeed be a weapon.

Thompson was the only Warrior in double digits with 10. Both Davis and D’Angelo Russell had 15 points for the Lakers. The Warriors had 11 turnovers in the first half, not unexpected in this warm up to the regular season. Both teams played with such intensity in the half it looked nothing like a preseason matchup.

After three quarters Golden State led 95-83. The Warrior bench started the quarter extending their half time lead. This amazing bench had scored 64 points going into the fourth quarter. The Golden State starters had played just a little over a quarter in this game.

The Lakers bench player Cam Reddish left the court in the quarter with a turned ankle, something you hate to see especially in the preseason. The bench finished off the game with Kuminga scoring 24 points with eight rebounds.

Moses Moody had 15 and Podziemski with 11 points. All but three of the 13 bench players who took the floor scored finishing with 91 points. The bench stole the show.

This was of course the beginning of a very long 82-game season but it was a great showing by this Warrior bench. The starters played just a little over a quarter. There is more good news for the Warriors.

It appears right now that Green will be available for the first game of the 2023-24 season. This guy is a fighter and it is no surprise that he has healed in record time. Now it remains to be seen how this team will look going into the regular season.

How will they fare on the road? Last season they won 11 road games. They were 30th in turnovers and 30th in free throws. Shot selection was terrible at times. All of this has to change in a field with so many playoff contenders.

The second game of the preseason will tipoff next Friday October 13 at 7:00 PM in Los Angeles at Crypto.com Arena.

Oakland Roots lose in a crushing 4-2 loss to San Diego Loyal in final away game

In Oakland’s last away game of the season, the Oakland Roots faced the San Diego Loyal in regular season play at Torero Stadium in San Diego. Oakland currently sits in eighth place in the West, one point clear of the playoff line and they had hoped to keep their spot as they had this game in hand but it got away in a crushing 4-2 loss. The Roots do have one last game at home to close the season. 

The first goal came on a sideline throw and was then headed to Bryan Tamacas who shoots on one touch past the goaltender and in for a nice goal and Oakland goes up 1-0, but that’s not new for them, can it be held? The answer is no as San Diego hit the equalizer three minutes after Oakland’s when Joe Corona hit a header past Paul Blanchette to make it 1-1.

Not even a minute later, San Diego scored their second goal when a beautiful attack led to a goal from Ronaldo Damus and the game felt out of hand early, 2-1 San Diego. The avalanche wasn’t over for San Diego as Damus hit his second goal, this time sneaking a one time shot past Blanchette and the frustration was visible on the Roots.

In the 44th minute, the SD Loyal delivered a fourth goal when Perez scored his first goal of the night and the energy was alive in San Diego, but Oakland’s energy was sucked out. The halftime whistle blew and it was clear who was on top and that was San Diego. Oakland needed to adjust, but momentum wasn’t in their favor. 

The second half was Oakland desperately fighting for scorching opportunities, but no cigar. San Diego knew all they had to do was run this clock out and play the game that got them to this point. Oakland wasn’t going anywhere without a fight as they hit a quick goal to make it 4-2 and the Roots ran the ball to center to not waste any time, but the damage was already done.

With five minutes in stoppage time left, San Diego was clearly in control and Oakland fought hard, but not hard enough and when the final whistle was blown the game ended 4-2 San Diego and Oakland looked crushed.

How this affects Oakland’s playoff chances hangs in the balance, but with one more game next week against El Paso, the fate of the Roots is on the line as we close this season October 14th.

After fast start, San Jose State falls 35-27 to Boise State

The San Jose State Spartans were unable to snap a two-game losing skid with a win over the Boise State Broncos on Saturday. The Spartans lost 35-27 to the Broncos at Albertsons Stadium. San Jose State fell to 1-5, while Boise State improved to 3-3.

The Spartans opened the scoring with Kairee Robinson’s 11-yard rushing touchdown — his 20th career rushing touchdown — and Kyle Halvorsen’s extra point for a 7-0 lead at 18:13 of the first quarter. Shortly after, Chevan Cordeiro’s 11-yard rushing touchdown — his third rushing touchdown of the season — and Halvorsen’s extra point doubled the lead to 14-0 at 7:02 of the first.

The Spartans led 14-0 at the end of the first.

The Spartans struck first to open the second quarter. Kyler Halvorsen’s 33-yard field goal extended the Spartans’ lead to 17-0 at 14:55 of the second.

The Broncos finally got on the board and made it a ten-point game midway through the second quarter. Eric McAlister’s 83-yard passing touchdown from Broncos backup quarterback Maddux Madsen and Jonah Dalmas’ extra point cut the Spartans’ lead to 17-7 at 13:33 of the second.

The Spartans poured in the points midway and late in the second quarter. Kyler Halvorsen’s 27-yard field goal made it a 20-7 game at 11:20 of the second. Quali Conley’s six-yard rushing touchdown and Halvorsen’s extra point expanded the Spartans’ lead to 27-7 with 4:56 left in the second.

The Broncos scored late in the second quarter. Broncos backup quarterback Maddux Madsen ran for an eight-yard rushing touchdown, and Jonah Dalmas kicked an extra point to cut the Spartans’ lead to 27-14 with 42 seconds left in the second.

The Spartans held a 27-14 halftime lead over the Broncos.

The Broncos opened the second half scoring. Taylen Green ran for a one-yard rushing touchdown, and Jonas Dalmas kicked an extra point to cut the Spartans’ lead to 27-21 with 5:34 left in the third quarter.

The Spartans held onto a 27-21 lead at the end of the third.

The Broncos’ offense exploded in the fourth quarter. Taylen Green ran for an 11-yard rushing touchdown and Jonah Dalmas kicked an extra point to help the Broncos take a 28-27 lead at 14:25 of the fourth. Riley Smith caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Broncos starting quarterback Taylen Green, and Dalmas kicked an extra point for a 35-27 lead with 3:30 left in the fourth.

#1 The San Jose Sharks came up a goal short to the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night in their final pre season game in overtime 4-3. The Sharks got goal help from Alexander Barabanov, Mike Hoffman and Thomas Bordeleau.

#2 The Sharks in the first period, Mikael Granlund impressed forechecking the Kings Drew Doughty and stole the puck and dished it off to William Eklund but Eklund’s shot was turned away by Kings goaltender Phoenix Copley.

#3 Also in first period action the Kings Adrian Kempe got behind the Sharks Bordeleau and got a pass off. Bordeleau went to block the pass instead of going in for Kempe and Matt Benning got on Kempe but the skill set of Bordeleau trying to block was impressive.

#4 Bordeleau scored twice and his goal coming in the third period, as Eklund passed to Bordeleau as Eklund was on the same skate speed with Bordeleau who beat Copely in a strike that lit the lamp.

#5 Sharks open up the regular season on Thu Oct 12 at SAP Center in San Jose against the NHL Champions Vegas Golden Knights. The Sharks who beat the Knights on Tuesday is not an indicator as both teams were using their bench, free agents, and trying to see who will make the final roster cuts. Opening night will be a true test for San Jose against Vegas.
