Hornets Win Big Sky Game Against Montana State, 83-80, at Hornet Pavilion

SACRAMENTO – In an exciting Big Sky Conference game on Thursday night at Hornet Pavilion, Sacramento State defeated Montana State 83-80 to begin its season-long four-game homestand. The Hornets defeated the Bobcats in the closing seconds of a tough game to improve to 7-1 at home and capture their seventh victory of the year. Fans were on the edge of their seats the entire time as Sacramento State used home-court energy, clutch plays, and key performances to win. The game had five lead changes and six ties.

Montana State was 13-8 overall and 7-1 in conference play going into the game, while the Hornets were 6-13 overall and 2-5 in Big Sky play. After a two-game losing run, Sacramento State returned home and used its home-court advantage and intensity to take control at key points, ending the Bobcats’ four-game winning streak. For a squad that had gone 49 days in a row without a home game earlier in the season, the win was very meaningful. The Hornets’ return to Hornet Pavilion and their eventual win were all the more meaningful during that time, which featured a seven-game road trip and the third-longest home-game break among Division I teams.

All 15 players on Sacramento State’s roster are new to the program this season, yet the Hornets showed unity and grit throughout the game. Mikey Williams, Jahni Summers, Shaqir O’Neal, Prophet Johnson, and Mark Lavrenov, their starting five, led the effort. Mark Lavrenov finished the game with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds, anchoring the Hornets in the paint, while Prophet Johnson led the way with 27 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists. Williams helped Sacramento State keep control in the crucial closing minutes by contributing crucial scoring.

The leadership team at Sacramento State played a crucial role in directing the new roster. In his debut season, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal was the general manager, and head coach Mike Bibby went back to his hometown. In a Big Sky Conference game, the two assisted in leading a newly formed squad to a big win at home. Sacramento State’s Sikh Night, which honored Sikh culture and showcased the team’s strong identity in the newly renovated Hornet Pavilion—a section of The WELL transformed into the program’s current home—marked the end of a 66-year tenure at The Nest.

Montana State selected a starting lineup with Chris Hodges, Christian King, Jed Miller, Davian Brown, and Patrick McMahon. Jed Miller led the way with 25 points as the Bobcats, who are renowned for their shooting, made nine three-pointers in the second half after making six in the first. Montana State was unable to overcome the Hornets’ home-court energy and clutch performance, even though they scored 42 points in the second half and kept the game close with several ties and lead changes.

The Hornets led 45-38 at the half after controlling the opening half. Christian King, forward for the Bobcats, opened the score early with a jumper following a Hornets turnover, but Sacramento State soon recovered. In the first 19 minutes, Mark Lavrenov scored 12 points on flawless 5-of-5 shooting and pulled down 5 rebounds, while Prophet Johnson scored 17 points with 3 rebounds and 4 assists. The Hornets’ excellent three-point shooting—more than 50% in the first half—along with Lavrenov’s tenacity and unrelenting hustle in the paint allowed Sacramento State take a 10-point lead, which was sealed by an important 7-0 scoring run.

Montana State was determined to recover from their shooting in the 1st half after halftime, and the Bobcats’ shooting allowed them to do so. However, Sacramento State remained calm, relying on solid performances from Johnson, Lavrenov, and Williams, as well as the passion of their home crowd, to overcome the Bobcats’ charge. The Hornets sealed the hard-fought 83-80 victory in the closing minutes by stopping Montana State’s comeback. Sacramento State was able to go on a 14-9 run in the final four minutes. Six of those points came from guard Mikey Williams.

Hornets Prophet Johnson, Mikey Williams, and Mark Lavrenov combined for 67 points to help Sacramento State secure this win. The Hornets also shot a season high 56% from the field while also hitting eight trey’s in 18 attempts going 44%. The Hornets showed their athleticism and toughness with having 24-2 fast break total points, along with having 40 of their 83 points in the paint.

The Hornets will try to build on this win in their upcoming home game against the University of Montana Grizzlies on January 31 at 7 p.m. at Hornet Pavilion in Sacramento, California.

Sharks Lose 4-3 in OT to Oilers, Give Up 3-0 Lead

The San Jose Sharks lost 4-3 in overtime to the Edmonton Oilers. Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid, Evan Bouchard and Zach Hyman scored for Edmonton. Connor Ingram made 17 saves for the win. Collin Graf, Adam Gaudette and Michael Misa scored for San Jose. Yaroslav Askarov made 28 saves in the loss.

After the game, Ryan Warsofsky talked about the matchup and what the team can learn from it: “We got some young guys in those situations against the firepower that they have over there. It’s a good learning moment. That’s what we’ll do, we’ll dust ourselves off and move forward.”

The Sharks scored all of their goals in the first period. The first came just 28 seconds in, a wrist shot from Collin Graf with assists to Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini.

The second goal came just over a minute later. William Eklund stole the puck in the neutral zone and passed it to a speeding Adam Gaudette. Gaudette carried it to the net and scored with a backhand.

The final Sharks goal came at 11:40 from Michael Misa. Misa carried the puck into the zone a high speed. Ingram stopped the shot and kicked it out but it hit Evan Bouchard and came right back in. Assists went to Tim Liljegren and Sam Dickinson.

The Oilers outshot the Sharks 12-8 in the first period. The only penalties called were matching minors so neither team had a power play. The second period was scoreless with two penalties called against Edmonton. The shots were 9-8 San Jose.

Leon Draisaitl got Edmonton on the board with a wrist shot at 1:34. Evan Bouchard sent the puck to the net and it went off of Dmitry Orlov. That helped it slip by Askrov and Draisailt chased it down and nudged it over the line. Assists went to Bouchard and Kasperi Kapanen.

Connor McDavid made it 3-2 with a snap shot from the faceoff dot at 16:55. Assists went to Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

With the Oilers net empty, Evan Bouchard tied it with a slap shot at 19:01. Assists went to Draisaitl and Mattias Ekholm.

The third period saw the Oilers outshoot the Sharks 10-3. The only penalty called went against the Sharks.

The Sharks started overtime with two defensemen on the ice, Mario Ferraro, Tim Liljegren and Alexander Wennberg. The Sharks never got a chance to make any changes to that. Tim Liljegren was cross-checked by Zach Hyman, which led to Liljegren falling and sliding into Askarov while Hyman received a pass from McDavid. Hyman took the game winning shot into an open net because Askarov was also out of position due to the uncalled interference.

The Sharks next play on Saturday at 1:00 PM PT in Calgary against the Flames.

Sixers Edge Kings 113-111 With Maxey Hitting Winning Layup; 76ers hand Sac their 7th straight loss

The Sacramento Kings (12-37 lost their seventh game in a row Thursday night to the Philadelphia Sixers (26-21) 113-111. They had an 11-point lead mid-way through the fourth quarter but allowed the Sixers back in the game. The game could not have been closer as the clock ran out on the Kings.

Game recap: The first two quarters were close with the Sixers outscoring the Kings in each of the first two quarters. After the first 12 minutes of play the Sixers had taken a three-point lead 28-15. The Sixers outscored Sacramento in the second quarter 32-29, another three points with Philadelphia taking a 60-54 at the half.

DeMar DeRozan had a great first half with 21 points and Dennis Schroeder, who started in this game, scored 15 points. Not much else was going on as far as scoring for Sacramento. Zach LaVine did start in the game playing off the bench scoring five points in the opening half. The Kings had remained close in the first half but were unable to get over the top.

The Kings got as close as two points in the third quarter at 6:59, 68-70 and tied up the game seconds later at 70 forcing the Sixers to take a timeout. Domantas Sabonis broke into double digits in the quarter finishing three quarters with 14 points. At 4:16 the Kings took a 77-75 lead. As the third quarter came to an end, the Kings had a 92-88 lead when Keon Ellis hit a 23-foot three pointer.

Going into the fourth quarter Sacramento had built momentum that had been missing in the first three quarters. The task at hand would be to grow that momentum through the quarter. The largest lead the Kings had in this game was six points when again Ellis made a running dunk giving Sacramento a 98-92 lead.

There were more timeouts for the Sixers when the Kings took a 100-92 lead at 8:13. The remainder of the game was a see-saw affair in which Sacramento got the short end of the deal losing 113-111. This was their seventh loss in a row, a major disappoint when they had taken a 11-point lead mid-way through the fourth.

Sacramento come so close but missed a lot of shots in the final minutes coupled with fouls and turnovers. The 17 turnovers in the game did the Kings no favors. They played the Sixers close for much of the game and very nearly pulled off an upset.

The Kings put up some good numbers with Dennis Schroeder finishing with 27 points the high for the Kings. DeRozan scored 25 points and Sabonis had 17. The Sacramento bench high score went to LaVine with 17 points and Ellis with 10 points. The Kings had 46 rebounds in the game to the Sixers 24 about as lopsided as you can get.

The Kings had their hands full trying to contain Tyrese Maxey who finished with the game high of 40 points. Right behind him was Joel Embiid with 37 points. The Sixers did just enough to get past the Kings for the win.

Game notes: Thursday the Kings lost to the Sixers playing the fourth game of their current road trip. Tuesday they suffered their sixth loss in a row losing to the New York Knicks 103-87 their third road loss on this road trip. They continued the loss streak with a discouraging loss Thursday night. Keegan Murray remains out with an ankle injury and an expected return date of Febraury 4th. Malik Monk is out with an ankle injury and Russell Westbrook out with a foot issue with both looking at a January 30th return against the Boston Celtics. Zach LaVine will be back on the court after it had been decided at game time that he would be able to play.

It doesn’t get any easier for Sacramento as they travel to Boston for a matchup with the second place Celtics led by Jalen Brown. Tipoff for this game is scheduled for 4:30 PM at TD Garden.

STOCKTON – The Pacific Tigers beat the University of Portland, Pioneers 74-51 on Wednesday night in a West Coast Conference game at the Alex G. Spanos Center in Stockton, California. The game, played on Dignity Health Night, came midway through WCC play and was a major win for Pacific, which stopped a five-game losing streak to Portland while remaining unbeaten at home. With the win, the Tigers advanced to 15-8 overall, 6-4 in conference play, and 10-0 in the Spanos Center, kicking off a three-game winning run at the midway point.

Pacific entered the game off a hard-fought 56-54 win against Seattle on Saturday, the two programs’ first meeting in 42 years. The game was extra important because Portland had just beaten Pacific. In their first meeting of the season, the Tigers led 86-81 in overtime before the Pilots sank three straight three-pointers on their last possessions, including a left-corner shot by Matus Hronsky with 3.0 seconds left, handing Pacific a heartbreaking 90-89 loss.

Pacific’s starting five—TJ Wainwright, Isaac Jack, Elias Ralph, Justin Rochelin, and Jaden Clayton—provided perseverance and toughness throughout the game, with four players (Ralph, Rochelin, Jack, and Wainwright) posting double-doubles this season.

Portland entered the night with a starting lineup of Jermaine Ballisager, Dante Censori-Hercules, James O’Donnell, Samuel Noland, and Mikah Ballew, looking to complete a season sweep of Pacific. Dante Censori-Hercules had been efficient as a defensive stopper all season and had his best game of the year versus Pepperdine, ending with four points, six rebounds, and four assists in 27 minutes. He backed up his performance with a season-high seven rebounds vs Loyola Marymount.

Pacific took control of the game from the start. Isaac Jack scored the first point with a layup, and the Tigers went on a 7-0 scoring run in the first nine minutes, establishing an early lead and forcing Portland to play catch-up. Pacific led 40-21 at halftime, thanks to strong performances from TJ Wainwright and Elias Ralph, who each scored 11 points. Wainwright went 5-for-6 from the field, plus two assists and two steals, while Ralph had four rebounds on 2-of-5 shooting. Pacific shot 61.5% from the floor in the first half, scoring 22 of its 40 points in the paint, executing its plan of feeding the post and creating high-percentage shots. Portland struggled to create a rhythm offensively, shooting just 24 percent from the floor (6-of-24) and 10 percent from three-point range (1-of-10).

Pacific maintained its control during the second half. Justin Rochelin started strong, going 5-for-6 and launching a four-minute scoring outburst of 6-1. The Tigers also dominated transition, scoring 10 fast-break baskets while holding Portland scoreless in their transitions. Pacific expanded its lead to 62-38 after 13 minutes, and the Tigers led 69-46 in the final three minutes, effectively securing the win. Justin Rochelin led Pacific’s diverse offense with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 11 rebounds, while TJ Wainwright contributed 15 points, one rebound, three assists, and three steals. Their performances, combined with help from the rest of the starting lineup, dominated Portland on both ends of the court.

Pacific’s win was a complete home-court effort, keeping the Tigers unbeaten at the Alex G. Spanos Center and snapping Portland’s five-game losing streak. Pacific now turns its attention to the road, riding a three-game winning run as it prepares to meet the University of San Francisco Dons on Saturday, January 31st, 2026, at 7 p.m. at the Sobrato Center in San Francisco.

Sharks Sink Canucks 5-2, 3 Points for Celebrini-Smith

The San Jose Sharks defeated the Vancouver Canucks 5-2 on Tuesday. Macklin Celebrini, Adam Gaudette, Tyler Toffoli, Will Smith and John Klingberg scored for the Sharks. Smith and Celebrini each came away with three points. Yaroslav Askarov made 23 saves for the win. Tom Willander and Filip Hronek scored for the Canucks. Nikita Tolopilo relieved Kevin Lankinen early in the first and made 25 saves on 27 shots in the loss.

After the game, Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro said: “It was a big win, we came out, I thought we had some good energy in the first. I know they got that first goal in the four-on-four but I thought we played a pretty good, solid first period. And we kept it going.”

Tom Willander scored the first goal of the game at 1:15, playing four-on-four. Willander took his shot from high in the slot and through traffic. Assists went to Elias Pettersson and Jake DeBrusk.

Less than 30 seconds later, Macklin Celebrini tied it with a slap shot. Assists went to Will Smith and Sam Dickinson. That was the first of three goals in just over four minutes of play.

Adam Gaudette gave the Sharks the lead at 4:43 with a snap shot from the slot. He skated in with William Eklund, who passed h8m the puck at the last moment for the shot. An assist also went to Celebrini.

Tyler Toffoli made it 3-1 at 5:55. Alexander Wennberg passed it up from the goal line to Toffoli for the shot. An assist also went to Sam Dicksinson. The Canucks sent Tolopilo in to relieve Lankinen after that goal.

At the end of the first period, the shots were 15-8 San Jose. Each team had one power play.

The only goal in the second period was a power play goal from Will Smith at 9:07. Smith’s snap shot followed a cross-ice pass from John Klingberg. Celebrini also got an assist.

The shots were close in the second, 12-11 Sharks. The Sharks took three penalties, the Canucks four. Each team also had five-on-three power plays.

In the third period, the Sharks scored their fifth goal just 28 seconds in, at the end of the carry-over power play from the second period. John Klingberg scored it with a wrist shot off a Will Smith pass. Celebrini had the other assist.

The Canucks got one back at 9:15 on the power play. Filip Hronek scored with a slap shot from high in the slot off a pass from Pettersson. The secondary assist went to DeBrusk.

The Sharks next play on Thursday in Edmonton against the Oilers at 6:00 PM PT.

Losing Streak at six Wears On For Kings in Loss to Knicks 103-87

The losses continue to mount for the Sacramento Kings (12-36) after losing to the New York Knicks (28-18) 103-87. They have now lost six games in a row with no end in sight. DeMar DeRozan had a great game finishing with 34 points but that was about it for the team. No one else did anything of merit although Domantas Sabonis did have a double double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Game recap: The Knicks got off to a fast start taking a ten-point lead over Sacramento after the first 12 minutes of play 36-26. As the second quarter got underway the tide began to turn around as the Kings outscored the Knicks 25-16 in the quarter. Despite getting outscored by Sacramento in the second quarter the Knicks retained the lead by a single point 52-51. It had been a very competitive first half for the Kings with DeMar DeRozan having a solid game but getting no support from fellow starters.

The third was another close quarter with the Kings coming out on top 21-20 and going into the fourth quarter this game was all tied up at 72. Sacramento was now faced with another fourth quarter opportunity to win the game and put an end to their losing streak.

Fourth quarters of games have been the Kings undoing more often than not this season. Sacramento needed some support for their hot man in the game DeRozan. Through three quarters DeRozan was getting little help from his starters nor the bench.

As the fourth quarter got underway you could sense another meltdown from Sacramento. It had looked so promising going into the final quarter but it all began to slip away. It was a one-point game after the first three minutes of play but mid-way through the quarter the Knicks continued to extend their lead. Around the three minute mark New York took a ten-point lead 95-85 and the Knicks never looked back finishing off Sacramento 103-87 handing the Kings their sixth loss in a row.

DeRozan never got the support he so desperately needed. He had an amazing game finishing with 34 points and five rebounds. Russell Westbrook and Domantas Sabonis finally got double digit numbers in the fourth quarter, Westbrook with 14 points and Sabonis had a double double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The Kings bench was quiet in this game. Dylan Cardwell only had four points but he did have ten rebounds. The Knicks outshot Sacramento in the field and from beyond the arc, and the Kings had 17 turnovers. In all fairness the Knicks had more turnovers than the Kings with 21. The turning point in the game was the New York offense who at one time in the game had an 18-point lead.

The high for the Knicks was Jalen Brunson with 28 points and some great support from Mikal Bridges (18 points), Karl-Anthony Towns (17 points) and OG Anunoby (15). The Knicks didn’t get a whole lot of support from their bench either.

Game notes: After getting beaten pretty soundly Sunday by the Detroit Pistons 139-116 the Kings lost a tough one at Madison Square Gardens in their matchup with the Knicks. Sacramento had beaten the Knicks back on January 14th 112-101. Tuesday night the Kings were be without Zach LaVine, Keegan Murray and Malik Monk. LaVine is out with a back issue and both Monk and Murray have ankle injuries.

Both Monk and LaVine will in all probability return for their next game on Thursday against the Sixers. The Kings now have an estimated return date for Murray which looks like February 4th. The Kings are now riding on an ugly six game losing streak right now and hope to put an end to that against the Sixers.

The Kings continue their road trip taking on the Philadelphia Sixers Thursday night with tipoff scheduled for 4:00 PM.
