From My Notebook: Working with José Mota

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Working with José Mota on the LA Angels Spanish TV broadcast is as good as it gets in baseball broadcasting. José Mota grew up in the world of baseball alongside his father, Manuel (Manny) Mota, a legend in the Dominican Republic, Latin America, and especially with the Los Angeles Dodgers. I used to interview Manny Mota during his playing years in the late 1970s and later as a coach for Manager Tommy Lasorda.

Manny was one of the greatest pinch hitters I remember, a quality man with tremendous baseball knowledge, which he passed on to his son, José. Unlike radio, where all you need is two broadcasters and one engineer, Television requires a significantly larger crew due to the need for high-quality, real-time, multi-angle coverage of unpredictable, live action, as well as complex, on-site logistics.

Behind our spacious TV booth at Angels Stadium, our stage manager, a couple of audio people, producers, and a staff of approximately twelve, including those in the remote truck outside the stadium. Sometimes we were blessed with greatness sitting behind us in the booth, Rod Carew, Tim Salmon, and others.

On these LA Angels Fox Sports Network LA Telecast, José Mota handled all the commentary, and I handled the play-by-play. José played for the Cal State Fullerton Titans in the mid-1980s. A two-time All-America second baseman and a starting pitcher on the 1984 Cal State Fullerton team that won the College World Series. He was drafted in the second round of the 1985 MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox out of Cal State Fullerton. He was a good and very smart baseball player and is now an excellent baseball analyst.

José Mota made his MLB debut on May 24, 1991, with the San Diego Padres. He appeared in parts of two seasons (1991 and 1995) for the Padres and Kansas City Royals, primarily appearing as a second baseman, shortstop, and utility player.

Prior to Television, José and I worked briefly on the radio for the LA Angels’ Spanish broadcasts, covering all 162 games, home and away. Today, José is a broadcaster for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Spanish-language radio network, the World Champions. His father, Manuel (Manny) Mota, is very proud of José and his career in broadcasting, both in Spanish and English. José Mota speaks the language of baseball.

During the years with the Angels in Anaheim, we covered such stars as Vladimir Guerrero, Mike Trout, and Shohei Ohtani, among many others. Our Executive Producer was the great Nick Davis, others in the media circle included Mr.Tim Mead, one of the great gentlemen and professionals I have ever met, Vice President of Communications for the Angels, and for whom I am forever grateful, because he hired me for Angels baseball. Good friends who were doing the broadcast on English radio, like Terry Smith, Mark Langston, plus Mark Gubicza, Patrick O’Neal on Angels TV. Mark Gubicza, “Guby,” called me “the most interesting man in the world” because he said I look a lot like the man in the famous beer commercials..

Our producer, César Sutil, always had great ideas for our pregame shows, locations, and interviews. Here in the photo, we were taping a pregame show during a warm afternoon inside the dugout at Angels Stadium. Sometimes one of the Angel stars would sit with us for an interview. Our Spanish TV broadcast booth was well decorated by José with a Caribbean flavor, and many of the people who would visit our booth (Including team owner Arturo “Artie” Moreno) would get a kick out of the Latino ambience. Mr.Moreno speaks conversational Spanish.

I will forever cherish those years with José Mota and the great people at the Los Angeles Angels. Working with the LA Angels, especially with José Mota, was among the happiest years of my career in broadcasting. It was fun as we both share a great love for the greatest game ever invented.

Quote: My wife tells me one day, “I think you love baseball more than me”. I say, “Well, I guess that’s true, but hey, I love you more than football and hockey.” -Tommy Lasorda.

3.The Pistons Cade Cunningham did most of the heavy lifting but had a lot of support from teammates in this win as well as some great work from their bench.

4.The Pistons are sitting on top in the Eastern Conference 5 1/2 games ahead of the second place Celtics.

San Francisco Giants report: Giants agree to two-year deal with outfielder Harrison Bader

Former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Harrison Bader signed a two year deal worth $22 million with the San Francisco Giants on Mon Jan 26, 2026 (Google photo)

By Stephen Ruderman

It seems the Giants have finally nabbed a free agent hitter, as Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic has reported that the team has agreed to sign center-fielder Harrison Bader to a two-year deal.

If the deal is completed, it will be the most significant move the Giants have made in what has been a frustrating-slow off-season. To this point, their most significant signing has been starting pitcher Adrian Houser, who was signed to a two-year deal worth $22 million, with a club option for 2028. The Giants have also signed relief-pitchers Jason Foley and Sam Hentges to one-year deals.

It would also be a solid addition to the Giants’ lineup. Bader hit a career-high .277 with the Twins and Phillies last season, with 17 home runs, and 54 RBIs. He hit .305 with the Phillies after being traded from the Twins on July 31 of last year.

Bader is also a terrific outfielder, and one perhaps even amongst the best outfielders in the game. Bader’s presence made a tremendous difference in the Phillies’ outfield after he was acquired.

However, Bader has had some recent injuries. He had to leave Game 1 of the NLDS last year with a hamstring injury, and was limited to just two pinch-hit at-bats for the remainder of the series, in which the Phillies lost in four games to the eventual-world champion Dodgers.

The finances of the deal have yet to be disclosed.

Stanford Cardinal podcast Daniel Dullum: Stanford gets beat by Cal in 12 point deficit

The score says it all as the Stanford Cardinal are beaten by the Cal Bears on their home floor on Sat Jan 24, 2026 at Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto (Stanford Cardinal X photo)

Stanford Cardinal podcast Daniel Dullum:

Tough loss for the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday night losing to the Cal Bears at Maples Pavilion 78-66 but Cal had the final say. In the first half it was close but Stanford came away with a four point lead 38-34. The Cardinal in the first half played a solid game and they led early they led by ten points.

This was before Cal put together a 25-5 run and that’s how they got that four point lead in at the half. The Cardinal leading scorer was Jeremy Dent Smith he had the effort but Dent Smith really needed help from his teammates to try and win this game. Stanford they have a nice lineup but they all need to be clicking they need to be playing off each other.

If their not able to do that and Cal had sonething defensively to do with that and yest Dent Smith had a nice game but the other guys have to step up and they didn’t. Cal is having a solid season which is partially why you had every reason to look forward to Saturday night’s game. Both these teams have had their issues the last few years but this season their both off to excellent starts and it looked pretty even going in.

Another Loss For Sacramento At Hands of Pistons 139-116; Loss is fifth straight for Kings

Sacramento Kings guard Russell Westbrook (right) drives against the Detroit Pistons guard Daniss Jenkins (24) in the first half at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Sun Jan 25, 2026 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The Sacramento Kings (12-35) suffered yet another loss stringing their defeats to five in a row. This loss came at the hands of the red-hot Detroit Pistons (33-11) 139-116. This game was tied after the first 12 minutes of play at 35 but Detroit broke the game wide open in the second quarter outscoring the Kings 43-30.

It was all downhill from there with Sacramento getting outscored in the third and fourth quarters. It was another low key game for the Sacramento starters but was again a great game for the bench who successfully scored 56 collective points scoring almost half of the total for the game.

Game recap: This game was a close one after the first 12 minutes of play tied at 35. This is a pattern the Kings have seen far too often from Sacramento leading to a collapse in the final quarters.

This game was more of the same with the Kings getting outscored 43-30 in the second quarter giving the Pistons a 78-65 lead at the half. The Pistons are leading the Eastern Conference and so expectations were pointing to a fifth win for Detroit in their last six games.

The Pistons outscored Sacramento in the third quarter 35-28 and went on to finish off the Kings in the fourth quarter outscoring them 26-23. This was Sacramento’s fifth loss in a row. The impressive winning streak that the Kings had celebrated earlier in the month was now a distant memory and they have settled back into mediocrity at best.

The Pistons Cade Cunnington had the high for the game with 29 points with eight of their bench players adding points. They have a very deep balanced team which explains the success they are having this season.

The Kings never really got any kind of lead after the first quarter which ended in a tie. They faltered mightily for the rest of the game The high for the Sacramento starters was DeMar DeRozan with only 16 points.

It was a disappointing showing for the starters. Domantas Sabonis was back in the starting lineup for this game scoring 12 points with 7 rebounds. The high for the team was off the bench with Malik Monk scoring 19 points.

The Kings shot around 60% from the line and the 19 turnovers hurt as well. conceding 28 points. The largest lead for Sacramento in this game was seven points which was overshadowed by the 25 point lead the Pistons had amassed.

As the Kings approach the trade deadline in early February they are sure to see some major overhauls. The way things are headed right now cannot continue for very much longer. With every game the Kings are seeing deepening disappointments so something has got to give and they will shortly find out what will transpire.

Game notes: Sunday afternoon the Kings took on the Eastern Conference leading Pistons. Domantas Sabonis started the game after playing off the bench since his return he scored 12 points. The Kings have now lost five games in a row after Sunday’s loss and will have to find some relief in their next game Tuesday in New York as they continue to struggle.

The Kings will next match-up with the New York Knicks on Tuesday evening with tipoff scheduled for 4:30 PM.

Stanford Cardinal game wrap: Cardinal mauled by Golden Bears, 78-66 in Battle of the Bay I, Saturday on the Farm

Stanford Cardinal guard Jeremy Dent Smith drives to the net against Cal Bears guard TJ Carr (3) at Maples Pavilion in Palo Alot Sat Jan 24, 2026 (Stanford Cardinal photo)

By Michael Robeson

STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal (14-6, 3-4 ACC) squandered a double-digit first half lead and dropped their home portion of the Battle of the Bay 78-66 to the California Golden Bears (15-5, 3-4 ACC) inside of a sold out Maples Pavilion Saturday night.

Cal scored the first points of the game, but soon relinquished the small advantage over the Cardinal,  There were eight lead changes and six ties during the initial 20 minutes of game action.  The last switch would loom big throughout the rest of the game.

With all the back and forth by the longtime Bay Area rivals, Stanford managed to lead by as many as 16 points.  However, the guests from Berkeley would have a say in the scoring margin by halftime.  Both squads had runs, but Stanford’s 10-0 foray had them in the lead for more than 15 and 1/2 minutes, while Cal was in front for less than three minutes.

The Golden Bears used their small of amount of time wisely.  The eighth lead change  came just under a minute before intermission.  Cal completed a dramatic comeback, before the halftime whistle.  By the time it was recess, Cal had turned a 16-point, to a four points lead for themselves.  A 20-point turnaround before halftime, was great momentum for the Golden Bears, 38-34.

At the midway point of the conference clash, Stanford had one player in double figures, Jeremy Dent-Smith (11), while Cal had two of their own to meet the plateau.  Senior forward John Camden had 11 points, in addition sophomore guard and son of basketball Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen, Justin chipped in 10 points.

The second half was similar to the first, with Cal converting the first bucket.  Not only did they do that, but they forged a 12-0 run and led by as much as 15 points before 40 minutes elapsed on the game clock.

During the regulated 20 minutes of second half play, there was one more time the score (60) was tied.  Besides that, Cal was in front from the moment they regained the lead before halftime.  From there, they went on to outscore the Cardinal 18-6, tripling their output. At the final buzzer, Stanford had fallen to their cross-Bay rival by 12 points, 78-66.

Jeremy Dent-Smith led the Cardinal with 20 points and Ryan Agarwal added 12 points and 9 rebounds.  The top bucket-getter, Ebuka Okorie did contribute 14 points for the cause; however, it came from an abysmal 1-16 from the floor and 0-9 from 3-point land.  The bright spot was he shot 12-14 from the free throw line, which greatly assisted his final total.

The Golden Bears were led by John Camden’s game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds.  The aforementioned Justin Pippen offered 18 points and six assists, in addition to Dai Dai Ames (11) and Chris Bell’s (10) points production.

Stanford will next be in action Wednesday, January 28th in South Florida, as they take on the Miami Hurricanes 6:00 PM PT and 9:00 PM ET on the ACC Network.  Cal will also fly to the Sunshine State, on the same date, to battle the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee at 4:00 PM PT and 7:00 PM ET, also on the ACC Network.  Part II of the Battle of the Bay will be Saturday, February 21, at Haas Pavilion 3:00 PM PT on the ACC Network.

White’s late goal propels Barracuda to 5-3 win over Condors

San Jose Barracuda forward Igor Chernyshov (#92) celebrates his empty net goal against the Bakersfield Condors with his teammates at Tech CU Arena on Saturday JAN 24, 2026. (San Jose Barracuda)

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE — Colin White scored the eventual game winning goal with 4:45 remaining in the third period as the San Jose Barracuda defeated the Bakersfield Condors 5-3 on Saturday evening at Tech CU Arena.

San Jose has won four out of the last six games. Bakersfield has lost two games in a row after earning points in 10 straight games.

San Jose (22-13-1-2-47 points) drew first with a 5-on-3 power play goal early in the first period. Igor Chernyshov found Oliver Wahlstrom along the left wall. Wahlstrom skated up to the slot before rifling a wrist shot past Condor’s goalie Connor Ungar for his co-leading 11th goal of the season at the 5:28 mark.

This was Chernyshov’s first game the Cuda since being reassigned by the San Jose Sharks earlier in the week. The last time Chernyshov was in a Barracuda uniform was back on December 13th

Bakersfield (22-12-6-0-50 points) answered back with a power play goal just before the halfway mark of the opening frame. Seth Griffin’s shot was initially saved by Cuda goalie Laurent Brossoit, but Quinn Hutson cleaned up the rebound in front of the crease for his team leading 24th goal of the season at the 9:03 mark. Hutson is the brother is of Montreal Canadiens defenseman and last year’s Calder Memorial Trophy winner Lane.

The Condors earned it first lead with just over a minute left in the period with an even strength goal. Max Jones slid a pass over to Damien Carfagna in the slot who beat Brossoit with a wrist shot for fourth goal of the season at the 18:48 mark.

Cam Lund evened the score with his seventh goal of the season early in the second period. Jimmy Huntington’s pressure inside the Condor’s zone created a turnover at the blueline. Lund collected the puck and skated in on a breakaway and beat Ungar with a quick shot from the short side at the 1:53 mark.

Bakersfield regained its lead when James Hamblin found Josh Brown with a backdoor pass as Brown beat Brossoit with a shot into an open net for his second goal of the season at the 8:48 mark. Brown has both of his goals this season against San Jose.

Max Jones was rewarded with a penalty shot when he drew a penalty on a breakaway with 2:59 remaining in the middle frame. Jones tried to deke out Brossoit with a move to the left side, but Brossoit made a sliding right pad save to keep the deficit at a one-goal game.

Once again, the Barracuda scored the equalizer to start a period. Egor Afanasyev skated into the Condor’s zone and fired a wrist shot just to the right of the net. Huntington crashed the net and cleaned up the rebound off of the back boards into an open net for his seventh goal of the season at the 2:23 mark of the third period.

Chernyshov scored an empty net goal from inside his own defensive zone with 20 seconds left in the game to clinch the game for San Jose.

Brossoit (5-4-0) finished the game 23 of the 26 shots he faced to earn his fifth win in a Barracuda sweater. Ungar (6-1) made 38 saves on 42 in losing his first start of the season after winning his first six.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 1-for-5 on the power play. Bakersfield went 1-for-4.

San Jose has scored a power play goal in six consecutive games.

The Three Stars of the Game: 1) Chernyshov 2) Huntington 3) Afanasyev.
