Mullens, 49ers Embarrass Raiders 34-3 on Thursday Night Football

By: Joe Lami

SANTA CLARA–The Nick Mullens era has arrived in San Francisco. In his first NFL start, the 49ers’ third-string quarterback torched the Raiders en route to a 34-3 shellacking on Thursday Night Football.

Brett Favre, Southern Mississippi’s most famous product, called the school’s record holder after the game to congratulate him on the instant success.

Mullens started en fuego, scoring on his very first drive. He never looked back, completing 16 of 22 for 262 yards and three touchdowns for a 151.9 QB rating.

Most impressively, he was able to connect with eight different receivers in the first half alone, which may have secured the starting job for the rest of the season.

“He did an awesome job today. The guys played well around him. There’s a lot on his plate coming in, and with it being his first time in a real NFL game, he started off real well, was poised and did a hell of a job,” said head coach Kyle Shanahan.

San Francisco was heading into the half with a 17-3 lead

George Kittle led the way with four catches for 101 yards and a touchdown, including an incredible 71-yard one-handed catch and run to start the third quarter with a bang.

The passing attack was beautifully set-up by Shanahan and the ability to balance with the run. Raheem Mostert ran for 86 yards and a touchdown on seven carries before he exited the game with a broken arm, ending his 2018 campaign.

Matt Breida was once again the workhorse, carrying 12 times for a bruising 44 yards.

The offensive line, which has looked shaky for most of the year, didn’t allow a sack and only surrendered two QB hits. Though, much of it seems to be due to great play-calling by Shanahan to get the ball out of Mullens’ hand quickly, but also due to the fact Mullens gets the ball out quickly and doesn’t hang onto it for too long.

The defense also had a huge game, holding the Oakland offense to 242 total yards, while not allowing a point after the 9:00 mark in the first quarter.

Derek Carr struggled, throwing 16 of 21 for 171 yards before being benched in the fourth quarter for A.J. McCarron. The 49ers’ pass rush looked legit for the first time all season, totaling seven sacks and nine QB hits. Cassius Marsh led the way with 2.5 sacks and three QB hits.

“It looked like we got after them. I thought Saleh did a good job mixing up his calls. We did a good job mixing up our stunts, and our guys won the one-on-one battles,” added Shanahan.

The mood has shifted entirely in Santa Clara after this huge win in the last Battle of the Bay (for now). It was the Niners most complete win under Shanahan and has the potential to turn the season around.

Mullens has lit a spark in the 49ers’ locker room and fan base and deserves to be the starter against the New York Giants on November 11th at 5:15 pm PT.

Sharks Lose to Blue Jackets 4-1

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Sharks fell to the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets Thursday by a score of 4-1. Despite outshooting Columbus 45-27, beating them soundly in the faceoff circle and taking the early lead with a goal from Kevin Labanc, San Jose could not beat the Blue Jackets’ defense or goalie again. Columbus goals came from Anthony Duclair, Seth Jones, Nick Foligno and Josh Anderson. Columbus goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 44 shots for the win. Sharks goaltender Aaron Dell made 23 saves for San Jose. The special teams were all penalty killers: the Sharks’ power play had three tries and did not score, and the Blue Jackets also failed to score with their power play.

After the game, Sharks captain Joe Pavelski said:

You look up at the end of the night and we have those shots. Didn’t probably feel like a 45 shot night. You know… the energy level was just a little bit off for us. But throughout that game we were right there at times, we just never found that spark we needed.

Logan Couture was asked about the ice, as the puck was bouncing a lot. He did not consider that a valid explanation: “Can’t blame the ice. Both teams play on it. It’s simple: we just didn’t play well enough. There’s no excuse of the ice being bad. We weren’t very good.”

When asked to elaborate, Couture said: “We weren’t good. We didn’t pass well, we didn’t play hard enough. We didn’t spend enough time in their end, we didn’t forecheck, we turned pucks over. I mean, you go down the list, we did a lot of things wrong tonight and we got what we deserved.”

The first period was balanced in scoring and shots. The Sharks spent a spell in the Columbus zone before finally scoring first at 11:50 of the first period. Couture was in front of the net, trying to get a shot off but the puck slipped away from him. Labanc was right on the spot to catch it and take the shot. Assists went to Couture and Marc-Edouard Vlasic. It was Labanc’s second goal of the season.

The Blue Jackets tied it up at 16:30 with a goal from Anthony Duclair. The goal came after a lot of pressure from the Blue Jackets all around the Sharks’ zone. Ryan Murray sent the puck down from the blue line to bounce off the back boards where Duclair picked it up and took it behind the net for a wraparound. Assists went to Murray and Alexander Wennberg.

Columbus scored twice in the second period, the first at 9:15. Duclair, near the goal line, moved the puck out in front of the net where it went off the skate of Seth Jones as Jones was stopping in front of the blue paint. Assists went to Duclair and Lukas Sedlak.

Foligno gave the Blue Jackets a two goal lead at 18:40 of the period. Erik Karlsson’s pass to Vlasic along the blue line missed and went off the boards to Markus Nutivaara. He made a quick pass up to a fast-moving Foligno in the neutral zone. Foligno skated in and beat Aaron Dell on the left side.

The only goal of the third period came with just 1:01 left in the game, a short-handed, empty-net goal from Josh Anderson.

The Sharks ended the game with a 5-on-3 power play, but it only lasted 22 seconds before they ran out of time.

The Sharks will host the Philadelphia Flyers for their next game on Saturday at 7:30 PM PT.

Battle of the Bay goes to the 49ers, who destroyed the Raiders 34-3

By Jeremy Kahn

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — In what was called “The Battle of the Bay,” was a nightmare for the Oakland Raiders, not the San Francisco 49ers.

Nick Mullens went 16-for-22 for 262 yards and three touchdowns in his first NFL start, as the 49ers simply destroyed the Raiders 34-3 before an announced crowd of 69,592 at Levi’s Stadium on Thursday Night Football.

With the loss, the Raiders have lost four in a row and have been outscored by 85 points during the losing streak.

“I know it’s not looking pretty right now,” head coach Jon Gruden said. “I’ve heard a lot of negativity over the last six, seven months and rightfully so. But we’re going to build a championship football team here.”

This was the best NFL debut by a starting quarterback since the AFL and NFL merged in 1970, as the 49ers improved to 2-7 on the season, while the Raiders fall to 1-7.

“I’m not sure about that right now. I grew up a huge Niners fan. I also grew up a Raiders hater from growing up mainly in the AFC West, and also having a history with them. It feels good definitely. It feels good to win and I’m definitely happy for our fans,” said head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Things started well for the Raiders, as Derek Carr drove the Raiders down the field on their first series of the game that ended up with Daniel Carlson 37-yard field goal.

Unfortunately, those three points that the Raiders would score on their first ever trip to Levi’s Stadium.

“We just got outplayed. Period. Offensively, we didn’t put up enough points. We didn’t stay on the field long enough. Time of possession was clearly in their favor. A bad game offensively,” said Jared Cook.

Mullens immediately drove the 49ers down the field, as he went 3-for-3 on his initial drive as a professional that culminated with a 24-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Pierre Garcon and the 49ers never looked back.

The touchdown catch for Garcon, was his first as a member of the 49ers and his first since December 11, 2016 against the Philadelphia Eagles, while playing for the Washington Redskins.

Mullens, who was undrafted by any of the 32 NFL teams out of Southern Mississippi got the start over C.J. Beathard, who missed the game due to an injured right wrist in the 49ers 18-15 loss to the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium on Sunday.

The 151.9 passer rating for Mullens was the highest for a quarterback in a debut since the NFL merger.

The 31-point victory by the 49ers was the biggest victory in the series since the 49ers also beat the Raiders in their first ever meeting back in 1970.

Following a three-and-out by the Raiders on their next series, the 49ers took control of the game, as they held the ball for the next 7:24 that rolled over into the second quarter that ended with a Kendrick Bourne four-yard touchdown pass from Mullens on the 13th play of the drive.

Robbie Gould extended the 49ers lead up to 17-3 near the end of the second quarter, as he kicked a 39-yard field goal.

The 49ers lengthened the lead up to 24-3 on their first series of the third quarter, as drove the team down on just three plays. The key play on the drive happened when Mullens found George Kittle, who made a terrific one-handed catch and was finally tackled 71 yards later at the Raiders six-yard line.

“I closed my eyes, 100-percent,” said Kittle. “Yep. I just kind of stuck an arm out there and it fell in my hand,” Kittle added.

Mullens awarded Kittle on the end of the drive, as he found the big tight end for a 5-yard touchdown pass to stretch the 49ers lead up to three touchdowns.

After yet another failed drive by the Raiders that saw them go three-and-out, Raheem Mostert got in on the act, as he scored on a 52-yard touchdown run down the south sideline to stretch the lead up to 31-3 in favor of the home standing 49ers.

Unfortunately, on the 49ers next series on offense, Mostert was forced to leave the game with an arm injury.

“They didn’t tell me, but I would assume that it is a broken arm,” said Shanahan.

Gould rounded out the scoring in the fourth quarter, as he kicked a 25-yard field goal, his second field goal of the game.

It was a disastrous trip down Interstate 880 for the Raiders, who could only muster 242 yards of total offense on the evening.

Carr went 16-for-21 for 171 yards passing, but he was sacked seven times by the 49ers defense, who just manhandled the Raiders offensive line.

Doug Martin led the Raiders in rushing, as he carried the ball 11 times for 49 yards, while Jalen Richard led the Raiders in receiving, as he caught four passes for 45 yards.

“We’ve got to keep fight. We’ve got to go to get that dog. Go out there and keep fighting and fighting and fighting. Just go out there and show people that we still deserve to be in this league,” said Richard.

On the other side of things, the 49ers made it look easy, as they gained 405 yards of total offense, despite the fact that they were playing their third string quarterback, who never took an NFL snap prior to the game.

Before leaving the game with an arm injury in the third quarter, Mostert led the 49ers in rushing, as he carried the ball just seven time for 86 yards, including that 52-yard touchdown run.

Kittle led the 49ers in receiving, as he caught four passes for 108 yards, 71 of which came on one play just minutes into the third quarter that culminated with Mullens’ third touchdown pass of the game.

NOTES: Former 49ers wide receiver Terrell Owens, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this past August was presented with his Hall of Fame ring by Hall of Fame President David Baker.

Owens, who played for the 49ers from 1997-2003 skipped the ceremony in Canton, Ohio, as he received his gold jacket at his college alma mater of University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

UP NEXT: The Raiders return to the Coliseum, as they face the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, November 11.

The 49ers next play on November 12, as they face the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.

Kings beat the Hawks 146-115 for first win in Atlanta since 2006

By: Jeremiah Salmonson

Last year, the Sacramento Kings were humiliated by the Atlanta Hawks. The King lost in Atlanta last year by a score of 80-126. Grant Napear was quoted as saying in pregame, “It was a game of men against boys” last season. This year, the Kings were looking to flip the script against Atlanta. The tip was scheduled for 4:30 PM PST on Thursday.

The Kings came ready to play in their first game action since Tuesday evening in Orlando. De’Aaron Fox appeared to put the back issues he has been experiencing behind him early to lead the Kings in the first half. The Kings and Hawks both came out shooting early on. Led by Buddy Hield (9 first-quarter points) and Nemenja Bjelica (10 first-quarter points) the Kings were able to jump out to an early lead in the first. As time winded down in the first, the score was 35-29 Kings on top.

The Kings couldn’t do much separating from the Hawks in the second quarter. Both teams would match each other shot for shot going into halftime. Leading the Kings was Fox, Hield and Nemenja Bjelica.

The third quarter is when the Kings turned it up a notch. Fox would get himself career-highs in points and assists before the end of the third to lead the Kings. Hield was also playing very well for the Kings in the third as they created separation from the Hawks. The Kings, looking for their first win in Atlanta since 2006, finished the third with 46 points and a 115-86 lead.

From this point on the game was Sacramento’s to lose, and they did not do that. Fox put together the first triple-double of his career and led the Kings to a 146-115 win. Fox was asked after the game if the game has slowed down and said, “The game has slowed down immensely.” Fox finished with 31 points, 15 assists, and 10 rebounds. Other notable performances included Hield (27 points), Bjelica (19 points), and Marvin Bagley (18 points).

Up Next: The Kings head to Milwaukee to face the undefeated Bucks at 12:30 PM PST on Sunday.

Stanford Cardinal Football podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Shaw expects less passing at Washington this Saturday

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry:

#1 The Stanford Cardinal (5-3) probably won’t up the passing game much like they did last Saturday at Pullman against the Washington State University Cougars in their 41-38 loss when they face University of Washington Huskies.

#2 The loss to WSU put some doubts for Stanford’s chances to get to win the Northwest title.

#3 After Stanford quarterback KJ Costello had his hand stepped on during their visit to Arizona State University, he came up throwing against WSU for a nice recovery last Saturday, going 33-43 for 323 yards.

#4 The last time Stanford had a quarterback open up the passing game was when Andrew Luck threw 29-46 for 241 yards in a 52-31 loss to Oregon in Eugene back on October 2, 2010. Costello threw eight passes last Saturday.

#5 Head coach David Shaw said of playing in Seattle that rain, cold, and the 11th man (the noise) could be a factor and that he expects Costello to keep the ball against the Huskies more than he did against WSU.

On the Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa:

#1 The second place San Jose Sharks (6-3-3) came up short in a shootout with the New York Rangers (4-7-1) last Tuesday. The Sharks got goal help from Tomas Hertl early on. Hertl’s goal contributed to a tie at the time 3-3.

#2 The Rangers came back and got goals from Chris Kreider, who scored twice, and Nats Zuccarello.

#3 The Sharks’ Timo Meier and Brett Burns also scored for the Sharks.

#4 In the shootout, goalie Martin Jones stopped all but one shot. The Rangers’ Kevin Shattenkirk scored the game-winning goal in the shootout.

#5 The Sharks take on the Columbus Blue Jackets (6-5-0) tonight at SAP Center. Mary Lisa sets this one up.

The good news keeps on coming for San Jose State, whose senior kicker Bryce Crawford was named one of 12 national semifinalists for the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy.

The Wuerffel Trophy was named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Florida, and it’s presented annually to the FBS player that flawlessly combines outstanding community service with academic and athletic achievements.

“It’s humbling, because I’ve been trying to do a lot of community service when I can to fit it into my (football) practice and school schedule, trying to give back in whatever way I can. It’s a rewarding experience and I’m excited to be a part of it,” said Crawford, who is tied for 16th place among active kickers for career field goals made with 43.

Crawford’s community service activities range from helping San Jose State’s first-semester students with move-ins to on campus housing, hosting play days and reading sessions for elementary school students, assisting senior citizens with daily living needs, and participating in the annual walk A Mile In Her Shoes campaign to raise awareness and funds to end domestic violence against women.

Crawford, a native of Plano, Texas, is the San Jose State record holder for single-season and career field goals made from 50 or more yards. He was 5-of-8 from 50 or more yards as a junior and 6-for-11 for his career. Crawford shared the national lead in 50-plus yard field goals as a junior.

In 2018, Crawford is the only FBS kicker in the top-50 in both field goals made per game and punting average. He is tied for 19th in field goals made per game at 1.50 and 23rd in punting at 44.0 yards per punt. Crawford has converted his last six field goal tries, including a long of 50 yards in the October 27 win over UNLV.

Crawford is a communication studies major, a San Jose State University Dean’s Scholar, and a two-time Mountain West Scholar Athlete and Academic All-Mountain West award winner.

Finalists for the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy will be named on Monday, November 19 and announced on ESPN the next day. The award winner will announced on Tuesday, December 4 and honored on Friday, February 15, 2019 at the Emerald Coast Convention Center in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

Warriors win sixth in a row after 131-121 defeat of the Pelicans

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors, who returned home to Oracle Arena after a successful 3-game road trip, defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 131-121 on Wednesday night. It wasn’t easy as the Pelicans entered the game as the highest scoring team in the NBA. The Warriors, who were backed by Steph Curry’s 37 points, failed to crumble. They moved the ball well and recorded 40 assists in a winning effort. Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green also played well. Green was a force on defense, and the Warriors were able to hold the Pelicans’ Anthony Davis to just 17 points.

Both teams played an uptempo game in the first quarter. The lead changed hands several times, but the Warriors were able to end the period with a 6-point lead 43-37.  In the second period, the Pelicans trailed 49-40 when they went on an 11-0 run to regain the lead. The Warriors woke up and went on a 14-6 run to lead 64-56. The Pelicans regrouped and scored the next 7 points to trail by one 64-63. Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green scored the next 3 buckets, and the Warriors finished the first half leading 70-63.

The Warriors, who usually own the third quarter, outscored the Pelicans 37-29 to take a 15-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Curry led the charge, and he had help from the Warriors’ bench players Kevon Looney, Jonas Jerebko, and Alfonzo McKinnie. The quarter ended with Golden State leading 107-92.

The Pelicans refused to quit. Davis led the Pelicans’ charge. Curry, Durant, Thompson, and Green were determined to not let the Pelicans overtake them. They met every challenge and did not wilt down the stretch. The Pelicans did win the quarter as they outscored the Warriors 29-24 but the 15-point deficit was too much to overcome. The Warriors won 131-121.

Game Notes: Steph Curry led the Warriors with 37 points. It was his sixth 30-point game of the season. Durant had 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists. Draymond Green almost had a triple-double as he recorded 16 points, 15 rebounds, and 8 assists. Green was clearly the player of the game for the Warriors. Klay Thompson finished with 18. The Warriors bench tallied 30 points. Jonas Jerebko had 10, Andre Iguodala 9, and Jordan Bell, Alfonzo McKinnie, and Kevon Looney added 11. Shaun Livingston did not play as he is recovering from a foot injury.

The Pelicans were led by Jrue Holiday’s 28 points. Nikola Mirotic knocked down 26 and snagged 12 rebounds in a losing effort. E’Twaun Moore pitched in with 21.

The Warriors are now 8-1 for the season, and the Pelicans drop to 4-3.

The Warriors held a moment of silence for Giants legend Willie McCovey, who passed away at the age of 80 on Wednesday.

Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr had this to say about Big Mac: “For me, Willie McCovey represents a major figure from my childhood…Hearing Vin Scully talking about Willie McCovey and the Dodger/Giant rivalry. I’m well aware of how beloved Willie was here in the Bay Area and by the Giants family. We extend our condolences to Willie’s family and to the Giants family. Everybody here with the Warriors is thinking about them tonight.”

Up Next: The Warriors resume play Friday night at Oracle Arena when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves at 7:30 pm PT.

Jimmy Butler is expected to play. Butler has requested for the Timberwolves to trade him, but the team has not finalized a deal yet.

49ers’ QB situation once again up in the air

By Jeremy Harness

SANTA CLARA–The 49ers’ injury situation has not gotten any better. In fact, it only seems to get worse with each passing week.

This time, it is quarterback C.J. Beathard–who is hurting–as may not even play Thursday. This week, he has been unable to grip a football due to an injury to his throwing hand, which is not good news as they head into tomorrow night’s game against the Raiders at Levi’s Stadium.

According to reports, Beathard will be a game-time decision, as Tom Savage, whom the team signed last week and started a handful of games last season with the Texans, is the backup.

Meanwhile, the Raiders have traded key players such as Amari Cooper and Khalil Mack this season in exchange for draft pick, so they are clearly not looking to make any headway this season anyway.

In other words, do not expect a great game on Thursday, particularly on a short week for teams that have won only one game apiece. In fact, it’s expected to be a dud. A downer. A suck-fest. Whatever you want to call it.

The 49ers did not have a full practice, but rather held a walk-through on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Linebacker Reuben Foster and defensive back Antone Exum are both expected to miss Thursday’s game with a hamstring injury and a concussion, respectively. Meanwhile, safety Jaquiski Tartt is also not expected to play due to a shoulder injury.

Among those who are listed as questionable are receiver Pierre Garcon (shoulder, knee), whom the 49ers were actively trying to trade ahead of this week’s deadline, but found no takers. Also questionable are running backs Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert, as well as cornerback Richard Sherman.
