The San Jose State Spartans concluded its back-to-back conference series against the Utah State Aggies at the Smith Spectrum on Wednesday evening.
Spartans head coach Jean Prioleau switched up his starting five, which featured Omari Moore, Seneca Knight, Sebastian Mendoza, Ralph Agee, and Hugo Clarkin.
After a scoreless one minute and 51 seconds, USU got on the board as guard Brock Miller knocked down a jumper to make it 2-0 Aggies. The game was tied at 3-3 at 17:16, thanks to a three-point jumper from SJSU guard Sebastian Mendoza. But the Aggies stifled the Spartans’ starters and maintained a double-digit lead throughout the first half.
If there were any silver linings to the Spartans’ lackluster play, it would be Seneca Knight, Sebastian Mendoza, and Hugo Clarkin. All three of them contributed to the Spartan offense and kept the team to a manageable deficit. SJSU trailed USU 42-25 at the end of the half.
Sadly, the second half didn’t provide relief for the Spartans, who were outscored 43-27 before the final buzzer sounded. USU forward Justin Bean opened the scoring with a two-point tip shot just 26 seconds into the half. The Aggie offense continued to wreck havoc on the Spartans’ defenders, who missed a lot of shots and turnovers. SJSU guard Caleb Simmons wrapped up the scoring with a lone free throw, but it was too little, too late. The Spartans fell to the Aggies 85-52.
SJSU fell to 1-4, 0-2 Mountain West. Richard Washington led the Spartans with 11 points.
USU improved to 5-3, 2-0 Mountain West. Rollie Worster led the Aggies with 15 points.
The Spartans continue their conference slate with a game against the Boise State Broncos on December 31 at 5:30 pm PT.
San Francisco 49ers-Arizona Cardinals preview with Jeremiah Salmonson
San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback CJ Beathard (3) will try to get some scores against the Arizona Cardinals this Sat Dec 26, 2020 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale as Beathard replaces injured quarterback Nick Mullens (newsday.com file photo)
On the 49ers-Cardinals preview with Jeremiah Salmonson:
In a year of crazy happenings, this week will be no different for the San Francisco 49ers (5-9).
Last week, the 49ers were unable to pull out a win against the Dallas Cowboys. Tony Pollard made the usually good 49ers run defense falter a bit as he was able to run for a couple of key plays in the game.
Midway through the game, the 49ers benched starting quarterback Nick Mullins in favor of CJ Bethard who has had limited playing time this year. In the remaining action, Bethard threw for just over 100 yards and seemed to provide a spark for the team. However, it was not enough as they fell 41-33.
In this week’s matchup, the 49ers will take on the playoff hopeful Arizona Cardinals (8-6). The Cardinals are coming off a solid win against the seemingly energized Philadelphia Eagles. Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray seemed to get back on track last week, but the run game wasn’t out in full force for the quarterback or his running backs. They look to continue their two game win streak against the 49ers.
The 49ers will most likely be starting CJ Bethard this week as Jimmy Garopollo remains out with a high ankle injury and Nick Mullins seems to be having elbow issues and might be looking at off season Tommy John surgery on his throwing arm. On the bright side for the 49ers, It seems Raheem Mostert is back and will continue to be in the lineup for the 49ers this week. Mostert, who has battled injuries this year, looks to build off a promising week last week. The 49ers who signed quarterback Josh Rosen off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad will be CJ Beathard’s back up on Saturday.
The game is set for 1:30 PM PST exclusively on Amazon Prime Video and Twitch in Arizona.

On the 49ers podcast with David:
#1 For 49ers (5-9) quarterback Nick Mullens last Sunday in Dallas was just another struggle turning the ball over and Mullens couldn’t get any scoring going as the 49ers scored seven points in the first and second quarters.
#2 Mullens threw for 219 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. For head coach Kyle Shanahan found out after the game that Mullens are injury was in need of Tommy John surgery
#3 The 49ers who have played host at State Farm Stadium for two of their last three games will play visitor this Saturday afternoon as they face the Arizona Cardinals (8-6) for a 1:25pm kickoff

Brooklyn Nets blow out Warriors to start 2020-2021 season 125-99

The Golden State Warriors opened the 2020-2021 season on a sour note Tuesday night against the Brooklyn Nets at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Nets blew the game open in the first quarter, and the Warriors could never catch up as they lost by a score of 125-99.
It was a tale of two teams. The host team, the Brooklyn Nets, under the tutelage of new head coach Steve Nash, presented themselves as legitimate contenders for the Eastern Conference crown. They added two superstar players, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant.
Irving joined the club after a turbulent history when he was with the Boston Celtics. He didn’t play much last season as he suffered a shoulder injury. Durant, the former Warrior, also did not play last year due to an Achilles heel injury.
Durant entered the game hoping to show everyone that he was back and that he could return to his status as one of the best players in the NBA. D’Andre Jordan holds down the center position for Brooklyn.
Spencer Dinwiddie, who averaged 20 points a game last year, was the other guard. Forward Joe Harris adds punch to the lineup as he is an excellent three-point shooter. The Nets’ second unit has two players that could be starters elsewhere. Caris LeVert is one of the best sixth men in the league. Jarrett Allen is very tall and is a rim protector.
On the other hand, the Warriors were hoping to show the NBA that they were on the road back to respectability. They had the worst record in the NBA last year. Steph Curry played in five games before being injured.
Klay Thomson also missed the entire year with an ACL injury. Klay will miss this year with an Achilles heel injury. Draymond Green did not play Tuesday night due to a sore foot. He is expected back soon.
The Warriors’ first-round draft pick, nineteen-year-old James Wiseman, was making his debut in the NBA. He did not play in any preseason games and just three games in college. His excitement level must have been very high.
Kelly Oubre, Jr and Andrew Wiggins were playing with Curry for the first time. Questions abound about how they would fare against a team like the Nets. The answer Tuesday was not favorable. Neither one had a good game.
The Warriors offense seemed to be out of whack. One game does not make a season. The Warriors coaching staff know that it takes time for a team to gel. The Warriors have so many new players. Most of them are young and haven’t played together as a team for any time.
The Warriors took the lead when Steph Curry tallied the first bucket of the night. The Nets, behind Durant and Irving, overwhelmed them in the first quarter. Durant and Irving scored 20 of the Nets’ first 21 points.
The Nets finished the first quarter with a 40-25 lead. The Warriors could not find a way to stop the Net’s offense. James Wiseman, a rookie, has a lot to learn about playing in the NBA.
The Warriors did play somewhat better in the second period. The Nets outscored them 23-20 to finish the first half of play with an 18-point advantage. Irving scored 24 for Brooklyn. Durant and LeVert each had 12. Curry led the Warriors with sixteen. Wiggins had eight. Wiseman kicked in with seven.
The Warriors were looking to turn things around in the third quarter. That didn’t happen as the Nets continued to hammer them. The Nets outscored them by ten points to increase the lead to 28, 99-77. The Nets’ head coach Steve Nash did not have to play Durant or Irving in the fourth quarter. The Warriors did win the quarter 28-26. It was too little, too late. The Nets win 125-99.
Game Notes and stats: Steph Curry led the Warriors with 20 points and ten assists. James Wiseman finished his debut with 19 points and six rebounds in 24 minutes of playing time.
Many of his points came in the fourth quarter when the game was out of reach. Kelly Oubre had a tough night. He did make two sensational dunks, but nothing else worked as he finished with just six points and seven rebounds. It was not for lack of effort. Andrew Wiggins had thirteen.
Kevin Durant played 24 minutes and looked like the Durant of old. He knocked 22 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Kyrie Irving tallied 26. He connected on four three in 24 minutes of action. Caris LeVert had 20. Jarrett Allen’s line was eight points and seven rebounds.
The Warriors travel to Milwaukee to play the Bucks on Christmas Day. It will be Game Two of the four-game road trip. The schedule has not been kind to the Warriors as the Bucks are among the best teams in the Eastern Conference. The game will start at 11:30 am.
Cal gets past Seattle U. in the game’s final minutes, 70-65
By Morris Phillips
BERKELEY, CA–Handpicked opponents with balky jump shots and limited confidence delivered to your main gym entrance at a moment’s notice?
Well, this isn’t Grubhub or Uber Eats, the Golden Bears can testify to that.
Instead of skating through the promenade entrance of the Conte Forum on the Boston College campus in near freezing temperatures, the Cal Bears heeded the words of their local medical experts, and spent Tuesday afternoon close to home at Haas Pavilion. After canceling with BC, the Redhawks from Seattle agreed to be Cal’s opponent in a hastily arranged matchup.
However, the Redhawks didn’t agree to be pliable or vulnerable–anything but.
Coach Jim Hayford saw his Redhawks lead for the game’s first 33 minutes only to go scoreless for five of the final six minutes allowing Joel Brown and the Bears to seize control in a 70-65 win.
“It came right down to the last four minutes and you have to credit Joel Brown,” Hayford said. “His two threes were clutch and at the end of the shot clock after we played really good defense. He made the two winning plays that really were the difference in this game.”
The Bears again played without leading scorers Matt Bradley and Grant Anticevich. That meant others had to step up and Brown, Kuany Kuany along with Ryan Betley answered the call.
Betley led the Bears with 17 points, but Kuany’s contribution (11 points tying his career best) was a welcome surprise as was Brown’s star turn down the stretch.
With the shot clock almost expired, Brown hit a 3-pointer to put Cal up 60-59 with 3:31 remaining. Then after both teams fell into neutral offensively for several possessions, Brown struck again with a three that put Cal up 63-59 with 2:01 remaining.
“Those were huge baskets for us, no question about it,” coach Mark Fox said of Brown.
Brown’s baskets were part of a 10-0 run that saw the Bears go from down two to up eight with 31 seconds to go.
In the closing run, reliable Redhawks Riley Grigsby (20 points, son of former Cal standout Alfred Grigsby), Emeka Udenyi (prepped at De La Salle Concord) and Darrion Trammell (St. Ignatius San Francisco) missed big shots, ending what had been an impressive afternoon for the trio.
The Bears (5-4, 0-2) are over .500 for the first time in over a year. They next see action on New Years Eve at Oregon in a matchup with the conference favorite Ducks.
Stanford Extends Winning Streak Beating Bakersfield 63-50 in Santa Cruz

Monday night the Stanford Cardinal were looking for a win to add to their three game winning streak as they took on the Bakersfield Roadrunners. The Cardinal are scoring an average of 74.3 points per game while the Roadrunners are close with an average of 72.8 points. Bakersfield expected to lean on Shaun William who is averaging 17 points a game while the Cardinals were looking to Oscar da Silva who comes into this game with a 20.3 average per game. They also have Dejon Davis and Ziaire Willams both double-digit scorers.
A predicted comfortable home victory came to be as the Cardinal dismissed the Roadrunners. The Cardinal are a legitimate Pac 12 contender and they lived up to that in this game. The Roadrunners struggle when they play above average teams and this game proved no different.
The final score was 63-50 as Stanford won both halves. The Cardinals dominated in the first half 30-22 and 33-28 in the second half, a more competitive half for the Roadrunners. Stanford got some nice points from Ziaire Williams with 17, Bryce Wills with 14 and Oscar da Silva with 10. It was a nice game for da Silva although it did break his three game stretch of scoring 20-plus points per game.
Midway through the first half the Cards took the lead for good and never looked back. It was a solid performance by the Stanford Cardinals extending their winning streak to four games.
The Cards are on a roll after beating the Arizona Wildcats Saturday night snapping a 20 game losing steak to the Wildcats in a wild 78-75 win. Stanford will be looking to extend their winning streak to five in their next game. The Cardinals will resume Pac-12 play on December 31 taking on Oregon State in Oregon.
Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Barbara Mason: Raiders prepare to go up against Tagovailoa and Dolphins Saturday night
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (1) tries to avoid the clutches of New England Patriots linebacker Josh Uche (53) on Sun Dec 13, 2020 in Miami (USA Today photo)
On the Raiders podcast with Barbara:
#1 The Raiders have lost four of their last five games and still maintain second in the AFC West is there still any daylight for the Raiders to make post season?
#2 In the last game against the Los Angeles Chargers the Raiders just couldn’t hang and and the Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert on the final play during overtime reached over the goal line to get six points for a Chargers win 30-27.
#3 The Raiders had little turnaround time as previous to their Thursday Night Football game against the Chargers they had just played the Indianapolis Colts on Sun Dec 13th another game they had lost 44-27.
#4 The loss of Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is huge who will be out from 10-14 weeks due to a left groin injury wiping out his 2020 season. Raiders back up quarterback Marcus Mariota did well standing in for Carr last Thursday throwing 226 yards and a touchdown. Mariota kept the Raiders in the game despite the loss.
#5 The Miami Dolphins(8-4) are in Allegiant on Saturday this will be a hard fought game for the Raiders. The Dolphins have won four of their last six games Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in his last game against the New England Patriots threw for 145 yards and didn’t throw a touchdown but the Dolphins got by the Patriots 22-12. Barbara how do you see this match up?

San Jose State men’s basketball opened their 2020-21 conference slate with a road trip to Logan, Utah to take on the Utah State Aggies. The two-game series began on Monday night at 6 pm PT.
The Spartans’ starting five featured Omari Moore, Richard Washington, Seneca Knight, Chase Courtney, and Hugo Clarkin. Courtney made his first career start and grabbed three boards by the 15-minute mark of the first half. Even so, SJSU fell behind early, and suffered a brutal loss to USU 107-62.
The Aggies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but Richard Washington tied the game at 3-3 at 18:31. Omari Moore helped the Spartans take their first lead of the game, 4-3, with a free throw at 17:34.
USU wasn’t a force to be reckoned with. Rollie Worster knocked down a jumper to extend the Aggies’ lead to 11-4 at 15:15. SJSU appeared to be disoriented for a little bit as Chase Courtney missed a jumper and a layup, but managed to bounce back, thanks to Sebastian Mendoza and Richard Washington. Mendoza’s three-pointer jumper cut the Aggies’ lead to 23-11 at 10:29.
Seneca Knight made a layup and cut the Aggies’ lead in half, 32-16, with 5:56 left in the first half. However, USU continued to dominate offensively and defensively to maintain a double-digit lead. Marco Anthony had a dunk and Justin Bean grabbed a defensive rebound as the half came to an end. The Aggies took a 47-26 lead into the locker room.
The Aggies used a 19-0 run to open the second half and take complete control of the Spartans, USU took a 40-point lead, 66-26, at 15:01. Sebastian Mendoza knocked down a jumper to end the Aggies’ run at 14:51.
Sebastian Mendoza’s glimpses of tremendous talent weren’t enough to bring the Spartans back to life. The Aggies reached the century mark with 4:08 remaining as Zahar Vedischev knocked down a jumper to make it 101-55. Harminder Dhaliwal’s late jumpers and rebounds were gravity defying, but a lost cause, as the Spartans took a tough loss, 107-62, to the Aggies.
Richard Washington led the Spartans with 20 points. SJSU fell to 1-3, 0-1 Mountain West. USU improved to 4-3, 1-0 Mountain West.
