For over 100 years, baseball’s ultimate sin has been gambling: players betting on games. Rule 21 is strictly enforced to maintain public trust and the game’s integrity. The 1919 Black Sox scandal is baseball’s most famous scandal, and it centered on gambling.
Eight Chicago White Sox players were banned for life from professional baseball for their involvement. Today, government statistics list 0.03% of the total US population as over 100 years old. So most of us were not alive in 1919. But many of us remember the Pete Rose gambling scandal.
An investigation revealed that Pete Rose bet on baseball games, including games involving the Cincinnati Reds while serving as the team’s player-manager. Mr. Hustle played in 3,562 games, hit 4,256, with 3,215 singles, and made 10,328 outs; all are MLB records in his 24 seasons in Major League Baseball. Pete Rose died on September 30, 2024, at 83 at his home in Las Vegas. At the end, Rose did admit he bet on games.

In May 2025, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred lifted Rose’s permanent ban by changing league policy so that lifetime ineligibility ends upon a person’s death. With his ban lifted, Rose is eligible for consideration by the Classic Baseball Era Committee. The committee next votes on a pre-1980 candidate in 2027. Mr. Hustle will likely be elected to the Hall of Fame posthumously. According to today’s betting markets, Pete Rose has an 83.3% chance of being inducted into Cooperstown.
Actor and Producer Mark Wahlberg is working on a film about Pete Rose and it is targeted for production in early 2027..
