Las Vegas Raiders/Monday Night Football podcast with Rich Perez: Quarterback controversy Raiders Carr and Ravens Jackson not elite

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr meets with the media at the Raiders Henderson Nevada facility on Wed Aug 25, 2021 (photo from the Las Vegas Review Journal)

On the Raiders podcast with Rich:

#1 Rich the buzz still is warm from last week’s First Take program when ESPN’s Keyshawn Johnson said that he doesn’t care what anybody thinks and that he likes Raiders quarterback Derek Carr and that Carr is an elite quarterback. Rich in your opinion how far has Carr got to go from being considered an elite quarterback.

#2 Of the elite quarterback class that was listed in the conversation Aaron Rogers, Pat Mahomes, Russell Wilson, and Tom Brady no one would be too shocked if you mention them for Hall of Fame caliber talent.

#3 Rich, talk about the benefit the Raiders got not using Carr in any of the pre season games and head coach Jon Gruden staying on the side of caution to prevent injuries to Carr and back up Marcus Mariota.

#4 Will defense be in question for the Raiders this season. The Raiders allowed a lot of scoring and Carr got sacked quite a bit towards the end of last season.

#5 First game of the season the Raiders host the Baltimore Ravens at Allegiant Stadium and once again First Take and ESPN’s Stephen Jackson chimed in on Ravens quarterback LeMar Jackson regarding being an elite quarterback to which Stephen A said “Not Elite!” and he also added, “Until you can throw that football accurately under duress period” he won’t be in the elite class.

Stanford’s big 2nd and 3rd quarters route USC 42-28 in the Southland

The Stanford Cardinal cornerback Kyu Blue Kelly makes an acrobatic lunge into the end zone after returning a 31 yard interception off USC Trojan quarterback Kedon Slovis in the second half of Sat Sep 11, 2021’s game at USC in Los Angeles (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

Stanford Cardinal (1-1) quarterback Tanner McKee threw for two touchdowns, went 16-23 for 234 yards in the Cardinal’s first win of the season over their Southern California opponents the USC Trojans (1-1) 42-28. The Cardinal scored 14 points in each of the second and third quarters that helped lead them to victory.

The Cardinal were coming off a opening day loss from last Sat Sep 6th to Kansas State 24-7 and wanted badly to make amends. They shocked the oddsmakers who had USC favored and who were ranked No.14. The Cardinal’s wide receiver Nathaniel Peat had 115 yards and caught a 87 yard touchdown pass from McKee and the Cardinal Kyu Blue Kelly picked off a USC quarterback Kedon Slovis pass for 31 yards for a touchdown that sparked and inspired the Cardinal in the victory.

Stanford head coach David Shaw had his team prepared this week after the Cardinal took that tough loss to Kansas State and the taste of that game was still in their mouths from opening week and the improved offense on Saturday night against the USC defense made things just a little bit satisfying for Shaw and McKee.

McKee had some good looks from the Kansas State opener after starting quarterback Jack West struggled to start that game. McKee did himself well against USC throwing for touchdowns to receivers Elijah Higgins and Brycen Tremayne in the fourth quarter that put Stanford ahead of USC by 29 points.

This was the Cardinal ninth win out of the last 14 games with the Trojans and the Cardinal defense kept the pressure on Slovis all night who went 27-42 for 223 yards, one touchdown and one interception. USC running backs Keaontay Ingram and Darwin Barlow each carried for a touchdowns but the effort was far short with McKee and the Cardinal pouring it in on offensively all night.

The loss snapped the Trojans nine game winning streak which carried over from last season, the Trojans won their opener on Sep 6th handling a very talented San Jose State team 30-7. That Trojan win looked as if it was going to set the tone for Saturday night’s game against the Cardinal but the Cardinal defense held Slovis and the Trojans offense from any developing opportunities and the Cardinal came into this game after studying film from the Trojans last game.

It was so bad for the Trojans that they even had their kicker Parker Lewis ejected from the game on the opening kick off for targeting his tackle. Despite that back up kicker Alex Stadthaus wound up kicking two field goals and two extra points flawlessly.

Next week USC will head to Pullman and face the Washington State Cougars at 12:30 pm on Sat Sep 18th and Stanford will conclude this three game road trip at Vanderbilt (2-1). The Commodores are coming off a close 24-21 win against Colorado State Saturday. Kickoff between Stanford and Vanderbilt is 5:00 pm PDT Sat Sep 18th.

TCU edges Cal 34-32; Horned Frogs Johnston catches 2 TDs

Quentin Johnston (1) wide receiver of the TCU Horned Frogs makes for the end zone out pacing the Cal Bears linebacker Evan Tattersall (54) for one of his two touchdowns this one coming in the second half at Fort Worth in week 2 of the NCAA season (AP News photo)

By Michael Duca and Morris Phillips

It was a close contest in Forth Worth on Saturday but the Cal Bears (0-2) couldn’t hold off the TCU (2-0) Horned Frogs and Quentin Johnston who scored two touchdowns as TCU edged Cal 34-32. TCU quarterback Max Duggan threw three touchdown passes was 17-31 for 234 yards and threw only one interception.

Duggan hit Johnston for the go ahead score in the fourth quarter to give TCU the two point advantage. In the fourth quarter both Cal and TCU scored 13 points each the difference was earlier in the game when the Horned Frogs scored 14 points to make it 19-14 Cal in front by five at the half. That lead was erased when the Horned Frogs scored a touchdown in the third quarter to take the lead 21-19.

The Bears with the loss are winless through the first two weeks of the season after they lost to the Nevada Wolfpack last Sat Sep 6th 22-17. Johnston made the fourth quarter catch with 9:53 left in the ball game a 45 yard catch under pressure Johnston twisted away from one Cal defender at the 30 yard line and another Bears defender missed taking down Johnston falling at the 10 and Johnston ran home free the rest of the way.

Johnston ran for 95 yards after making five catches he made every catch count in very close knit game against the Golden Bears “I think I speak for the whole team when I say this … we were very excited when he caught it,” said running back Zach Evans. Johnston said that he’s more than a tall lanky receiver but a threat to the defense that can down field and score and he did three times.

The Bears quarterback Chase Garbers threw 16-27 for 309 yards, and two touchdowns good enough to win most ball games but TCU just got enough scoring to get by the Bears. Garbers had a decent first half for Cal Berkeley throwing for 234 yards in the first half of action.

Garbers in four plays in the first half had 199 yards out of the 234 yards going for 49, 54, 28 and 68 yards. Garbers moved the ball so well in the first half the Bears scored six in the first quarter, 13 in the second quarter to take that 19-14 first half lead and they made it close in the fourth quarter matching TCU with 13 points each but fell short.

The Bears go back to the drawing board as they prepare to host the Sacramento State Hornets (1-1) in their home opener. The Hornets are coming off a tough loss to Northern Iowa on Saturday night in Sacramento. Kick off on Sat Sep 18th at Cal 1:00 pm PDT

Earthquakes earn 1-1 draw with FC Dallas

by Marko Ukalovic

FRISCO, Texas.—The San Jose Earthquakes scored early but couldn’t hold their lead in the second half as they battled to a 1-1 draw with FC Dallas on Saturday evening at Toyota Stadium.

San Jose are unbeaten in 11 of its past 12 matches. FC Dallas are 1-1-2 in its past four games.

San Jose (6-8-9-27 points) drew first blood early in the match when FC Dallas defender Matt Hedges was whistled for a hand ball inside the box for a penalty kick in the fourth minute.

Oswaldo Alanis converted the penalty firing a shot right right down the middle as FC Dallas goalie Phelipe Megiolaro guessed wrong and dove to the left in the sixth minute. Alanis scored his second goal of the season. Both of his goals have come on the penalty against FC Dallas.

FC Dallas (6-10-8-26 points) generated quality scoring chances in the first 45 minutes against San Jose. However Quakes goalie JT Marcinkowski frustrated the home team by stopping each scoring chance that resulted on a shot on goal. Marcinkowski’s best save came in the 40th minute when Jesús Ferreira was open in the middle of the box. Ferreria’s shot attempt was knocked away at the last second by the right hand of Marcinkowski. The ensuing rebound was cleared away by San Jose.

FC Dallas won the possession battle with a 60%-40% edge and generated 12 shot attempts in the first half.

FC Dallas scored the equalizer early in the second half as they carried the momentum they had in the first half to start the final 45 minutes. Justin Che serviced the ball inside the box where Ricardo Pepi headed home the ball past Marcinkowski for his team leading 12th goal of the season in the 50th minute.

San Jose came within inches of regaining the lead in the 58th minute. Chofis sent in a corner kick over to a wide open Chris Wondolowski on the left side. The All-time goal scorer in MLS history sent a header off the crossbar and the rebound was cleared away by FC Dallas.

Two minutes later, Marcinkowski was a thorn in Ferreira side once again as he stoned Ferreira’s shot attempt from point-blank range in the 60th minute.

Both teams had scoring chances late in stoppage time but neither converted their free kicks.

Marcinkowski was the man of the match as he finished the match with six saves on seven shots on target. Megiolaro made one save on two shots on target.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished with five corner kicks. FC Dallas had eight.

Each team were issued two yellow cards.

The Quakes hold an all-time record of 29-20-18 against FC Dallas, including an unbeaten record of 4-0-4 in their last seven meetings. That unbeaten streak includes four matches played at Toyota Stadium (2-0-2).

Rangers rally for five runs in 8th for come back win against A’s 8-6

Texas 8 – 11 – 0

Oakland 6 – 9 – 0

By Lewis Rubman

Saturday September 11, 2021

OAKLAND–I’m not going to comment on today ‘s being 9/11. Not because the events of that day, their causes and consequences are insignificant, but because they are too significant to be dealt with by the platitudes that so often accompany ballpark commemorations.

This leaves the relatively insignificant matter of this afternoon’s contest between the Oakland Athletics and the visiting Texas Rangers as the principal topic of this dispatch.

The game started auspiciously for Oakland, with Starling Marte blasting a one out homer 407 feet into left field off of surprise starter Wes Benjamin to put the A’s ahead 1-0. It ended, two hours and 46 minutes later, in a crushing defeat, with Oakland blowing a four run lead in the eighth inning

The Athletics stretched their first inning lead in the second. With two down, DH Khris Davis slammed a double off the left center field wall between the 7-Up and Rickey Henderson Field signs and scored on Chad Pinder’s single to left, making the score 2-0.

Matt Olson’s 33rd home run and 95th RBI of the season, a 392 foot blast over the right centerfield scoreboard on an 83mph cut fast ball widened the gap between the teams to three runs.

The Rangers came back in the fourth with DJ Peter’s lead off single to left against Oakland starter Cole Irwin. A strike out later, Nick Solak drove him home with a line drive double that landed just inside the right field foul line.

Yoel Pozo followed that with a single to center that brought Texas to within a run of the A’s. But Irvin pute an end to that with back to back Ks of ex-Athletic Jonah Heim and of Charlie Colberson.

The A’s were back on the attack in the bottom half of the frame. Yan Gomes opened it up with a walk, and Mark Canha’s 17th round tripper, which flew over lthe glove of a leaping Leody Taveeras just to the right of the 400 foot sign in straightaway center field restored the Athletics’ three run margin.

A walk to Pinder and Elvis Andrus’s double to left, which put Pinder on third, sent Benjamin to the showers. One-time A Jharel Cotton took his place. Benjamin had thrown 62 pitches, 42 for strikes, in four innings, allowing six and achieving an equal number of strike outs.

In addition to the five runs that had scored when he left the game, he was charged with the one that came on Josh Harrison’s sacrifice fly to center that plated Pinder. Marte’s drive to the left field fence almost broke the game wide open, but it landed in DJ Peters’ glove for the final out (Davis had grounded to third for the first).

Irvin received a nice ovation from the crowd (if you can call it a crowd) of 7,945 when he struck out Leody Taveras to end the Texas seventh. They knew that, with the right handed batters coming up for the Rangers in the eighth, the southpaw wouldn’t be around to pitch that frame.

After Brett Martin, on the mound for the Rangers in the seventh, had retired the A’s in order, Irvin’s replacement by Sergio Romo was announced. Irvin had completed seven full innings, allowing two runs, both earned, on six hits and a walk. He struck out eight and threw 67 of his 93 pitches for strikes. He lowered his ERA to 4.04.

Romo did not perform his task as set up man well. After retiring Kiner-Fanefa on a hard hit ground to Harrison, who had replaced Chapman at the hot corner in the top of the fifth, he allowed a single to left by García and an egregious four bagger, also to left, by Peters.

There’s a world of difference between a 6-2 lead and one of 6-4. That lead shrank to 6-5 after Nate Lowe walked and stole second without a second glance from Romo, scoring on Yohel Pozo’s no doubt about it double to center. That was it for Romo.

Andrew Chafin, who’s been invaluable recently, came in to put out the fire, even though the Rangers had no one except Lowe in their line up who wasn’t either a right handed or hitter. Chafin got a quick two strikes on Heim before yielding a 477 foot gut wrenching round tripper that gave Texas its first lead of the afternoon.

Spencer Patton now entered the game as the Texas set man. Kemp greeted him with a safety to right center, but he was erased when Gomes hit into a 6-4-3 double play.

Yusmeiro Petit had to hold the Rangers scoreless in the top of the ninth if the A’s weren’t going to blow another large late inning lead. Leody Taveras had something else in mind. He blasted Petit’s first offering over the Stream Your A’s sign in left center for only his third homer of the year.

The Athletics now were trailing 8-6. Enter Joe Barlow, looking for his fifth save of 2021. Lowrie pinch hit for Davis and grounded out to short. Pinder flew out to center. Seth Brown, recalled from Las Vegas a couple of days ago, pinch hit for Andrus and lined a two strike single to right center, which brought up Harrison as the potential tying run. Brown took second on a wild pitch.

Then Harrison lifted a fly ball that looked like it would fall between García in right and Taveras in center. But García made an tumbling athletic catch to seal the Athletics’ fate for the date and cast more doubt on their fate for the season. Martin got the win for his one inning of work. He’s now 4-4, 3.38. Barlow got that fifth save he was looking for, and Chafin got tagged with the loss, his third, which was also his third blown save.

The rubber match of this three game series is scheduled for 1:07 Sunday afternoon, with James Kaprielian (7-4, 3.81) going against Taylor Hearn (5-4, 3.95). Then the A’s will hit the road, returning on the 20th to face Seattle.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson: No secret Garoppolo and Lance will be rotating under center Sunday

Love the duds. San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo in checkered sweater (left) and Trey Lance in checkered sweater (right) are the 49ers Brothers and will be sharing duties under center at Ford Field in Detroit on opening day Sun Sep 12, 2021 (image from Clutch Points)

On the 49ers podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance participated in only three practices this week before the team flew off to Detroit. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Lance was doing good and that his limitations didn’t have anything to do with his index finger fracture.

#2 As opposed to the week right after injuring the finger where Lance was doing drop back drills without a football in hand he got to throw in practice on Wednesday. Lance has not spoken to the media since he fractured his hand against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sun Aug 29th.

#3 You can only imagine how the Lions are trying to figure out how the 49ers plan to use him on Sunday’s opener. Platooning quarterbacks no doubt will be confusing for Detroit especially since there is not much film on how they will run plays that will be available.

#4 Lance has been limited on play as he played just one game with North Dakota last season after all games were moved up to the spring league and played 16 games in 2019.

#5 In the final pre season game on Aug 29th starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and Lance rotated with Garoppolo taking 14 snaps and Lance was in for ten plays. Shanahan plans to rotate them in the opener on Sunday and everyone is curious to see how that will look like.

La Stella drives in five in Giants win 15-4

San Francisco Giant Tommy La Stella (18) who had a big day against the Chicago Cubs shares congratulations with his teammates at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Sat Sep 11, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Jeremy Kahn

Kris Bryant may have gotten all the Pomp and Circumstance from the Chicago Cubs organization and the fans; however, they must have forgotten Tommy La Stella also played on the North Side of Chicago.

La Stella, who played for the Cubs from 2015-2018 showed them on the field, as he drove in five runs on a two-run single in the top of the second and then added a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning, as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Cubs 15-4 at Wrigley Field.

Kevin Gausman went the first six innings for the Giants, as he allowed three runs on eight hits, did not walk a batter and struck out and saw his record improve to 14-5 on the season.

La Stella gave the Giants for the good in the top of the second inning, as he hit a two-run single off of losing pitcher Zach Davies and then Brandon Belt continued his hot hitting, as he added a three-run home run in the five-run second inning.

Wilson Contreras gave the Cubs an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, as he singled off of Gausman to give the Cubs the lead that scored Frank Ortega.

That lead last all of a half-inning, when La Stella hit his two-run single and Belt hit his 23rd home run of the season.

Asides from Belt, Evan Longoria also continues to hit the ball well, as he singled in the top of the fourth inning that scored Bryant to give the Giants a five-run lead.

The Cubs decided that a five-run deficit was not big enough, as Ian Happ tripled to centerfield to score the hot hitting Frank Schwindel, a day after he picked up the only two hits for the Cubs on Friday. Following the Happ triple, Contreras picked up his second RBI of the game, as he singled to cut the Giants lead in half.

After Longoria walked with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning, Mike Yastrzemski broke the game open with a two-run single of his own and then La Stella hit his fourth home run of the season that gave the Giants a 12-3 lead, when they scored six runs in the inning.

Once again, the Giants put up a crooked number in the top of the eighth inning, as Thairo Estrada walked with the bases loaded to score Belt and then Longoria added another RBI with a sacrifice fly that scored Curt Casali, who replaced Buster Posey in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Wade, Jr., drove in the final Giants run of the game in the top of the ninth inning, as he singled to score La Stella.

Caleb Baragar pitched the final three innings for the Giants, who have won six in a row and are now 5-0 on the road trip that ends on Sunday.

In his three innings of work, Baragar allowed one run on three hits, walked one and struck out two.

Davies lasted only two innings for the Cubs, as he gave up five runs on four hits, walked three and struck out one and saw his record fall to 6-11 on the season.

NOTES: This is the second six-game winning streak for the Giants, their longest winning streak of the season. They also won six in a row from August 7-13.

With the victory, the Giants have now won 47 games on the road, and it is only the sixth time since moving to San Francisco Giants in 1958 to have won this many road games in a season. They also won 46 games in 2012, and the record for most road wins in a season is 53 that was set by the 1993 and the Giants have seven road games remaining this season.

UP NEXT: Logan Webb goes for the Giants on Sunday afternoon, as he looks for his 10th win of the season and the Cubs will send Justin Steele, who is looking for his fourth win of the season.

Texas 5 – 8 – 1

Oakland 10 – 16- 0

By Lewis Rubman

Friday, September 10 2021

OAKLAND–The Texas Rangers have been a bit of a burr under the Athletics’ saddle this year. The lowly vigilantes from the Lone Star state (51-88 going into tonight’s fray) are the AL West cellar dwellers and are likely to remain so under their season is little more than an unpleasant memory.

Their record against the A’s as they entered into the first of a three game set that will comprise the last two meetings between the two teams for 2021 was 7-9, close enough to give them a chance of winning the season series. That’s not likely, but it is possible. Oakland’s winning percentage is .506 against the Rangers, .551 against all other teams.

Texas had another factor going for them, the desire to be a spoiler. Schadenfreude, the consolation of also-rans.

Paul Blackman brought an 0-2, 4.12 record to the mound for the A’s. With the exception of his disastrous start against Toronto on September 4, he had improved markedly in both of his starts since his first big league appearance of the year, which came on August 18, when the A’s called him up from Las Vegas to face the White Sox.

His opponent, Glenn Otto, was acquired by Texas from the Yankees as part of the Joey Gallo deal. He was sent to Round Rock and promoted to the show late last month.

He impressive in his first start, in which he hurled five scoreless innings while striking out seven Astros. He allowed two earned runs on two hits and walk before leaving a tied game against the Angels in his other start

Tonight, in spite of a fast start by the Rangers and Blackburn’s early departure, Oakland was able to overcome Texas by a convincing score of 10-5, thanks in no small part by stong work by what might be a revitalized bullpen. A four hit night by Olson, who upped his RBI total to 94, combined with three hits each from Marte and Kemp didn’t hurt.

Blackburn struck out two Rangers in his 22 pitch first inning but still came out of the frame trailing 1-0. After Leody Taveras led off with an infield single, Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a bounder to the mound, and the A’s starter elected to go for the sure out at first.

That put Taveras on second, and he came home on Adolis García’s crisp single to left center. He stole second without a throw, but Blackburn’s change up and curve got him those two punch outs that kept the damage down to a minimum.

The A’s got that run back and more in the second. Lowrie led off with a walk on a full count. Canha got hit for the MLB leading 23rd time of ‘21, moving Lowrie to second. Kemp singled with a hard ground to right, loading the sacks with Athletics.

Murphy lined a single to left that moved everyone up a base, which brought Lowrie in with the tying run. The A’s continued to advance station to station when Otto plunked Andrus, which gave Oakland the lead as Canha touched home. After Harrison struck out, Marte again moved the runners up a notch, with Kemp scoring the third Oakland tally.

Olson cleared the bases, putting the home team up 6-1 with what looked like a double to right, but a review on showed that he had stepped off second too soon and Kiner-Falefa had tagged him out. Oakland’s half dozen run rally was ended with yet another baserunning mistake when Chapman was called out on strikes.

The 6-1 Athletic lead looked pretty solid until Texas started to knock Blackburn around in the top of the next inning. One out singles by Kiner-Falefa and García put men on first and second.

Nate Lowe’s double to center drove in both of them and and cut the A’s lead to 6-3. A strike out later, Nick Solak’s single to left cut that to 6-4 and brought Deolis Guerra to the mound to replace the ineffective Blackburn.

He had lasted 2-2/3 innings, during which he threw 65 pitches, of which 37 were strikes. Bear in mind that every Ranger hit, of which there were six, contributed at least one to that last figure. All four of the runs against Blackburn were earned. He had three strike outs to his credit. Guerra held the visitors to a walk in his 1-1/3 innings of work.

Otto didn’t last much longer. Andrus led off the fourth with a double to left and, one out later, Marte unleashed a slicing drive to right center for a triple that streched the A’s lead to 7-4, sending Otto to the showers and Hyeon-Jong Yang to the mound.

The run that Marte scored on Olson’s subsequent single to center was charged to Otto, whose line ran 3-1/3 innings of mound duty, eight runs, all earned, on eight hits, two hit batters, and a walk. He struck out five and threw 78 pitches, 54 strikes.

Josh Harrison had gone hitless in the three at bats when he faced Yang with Murphy on second and Kemp on third and two out in the Oakland fifth. His ground single to left scored both runners and boosted the A’s advantage to 11-4.

Lee Trivino started the sixth for the green and gold. He looked sharp, setting the Rangers down. in order on a dozen pitches.

Dane Dunning, freshly activated from the COVID-19 list faced the A’s in the bottom of the sixth and survived a single by Khris Davis, who had replaced Lowrie as DH, and an error by usually reliable Kiner-Falefa at short, to keep the Athletics off the board. Yusmeiro Petit pitched a perfect top of the seventh for them. Then it was Dennis Santana’s turn to deal with Oakland in the home half of the inning.

It took him 28 pitches to do it, but do it he did, and Jake Diekman was on the mound, trying to mess with Texas in the eighth. It was messy, with three of the four batters he faced working full counts, but all they got for it was a walk. Josh Sborz handled the formalities of pitching to Oakland in the bottom of the inning.

That left it to Burch Smith to close down the visitors for one last frame. He faced the bottom of the order, Trevino, Pozo, and Hernández. Fly out to right. Fly out to center.

An infield single by Hernández brought Tavares to the plate, and his double to deep center field brough Hernández home with the Rangers´fifth run, the first the bull pen had alowed since it went into action in the third. A called third strike on Kiner-Falefa put the final touch on the A’s victory.

The win went to Deolis Guerra, who now is 4-1, 3.56, Otto, now 0-1, 6.92, took the loss. There was no save.

The Astros beat the Angels, so they Oakland still trails Houston by 5-1/2 games. Because the Mets handled the Yankees, the A’s are only a half a game out of the second wild card berth.

The series will resume Saturday afternoon at 1:07 with Cole Irvin (9-13, 4.10) pitching for Oakland and Kolby Allard (3-12,5.00) opposing him for Texas.

Belt and Longoria each go deep in Giants win 6-1

Standing O for former Chicago Cub Kris Bryant getting a hero’s welcome back at Wrigley Field in Chicago before the game in the first of a three game series on Fri Sep 10, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Jeremy Kahn

On a day where Kris Bryant returned to Wrigley Field for the first time since being traded from the Chicago Cubs, the San Francisco Giants left the Friendly Confines, happy.

Evan Longoria hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning and then Brandon Belt also added a two-run home run later in the inning, as the Giants made it five in a row with a 6-1 victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

With the victory, the Giants are now an amazing 41 games over .500 with a record of 91-50 and for the time being, they are three games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. The Dodgers face the San Diego Padres later tonight at Dodger Stadium.

Longoria added another run batted in the top of the eighth inning that scored Bryant from third base to close out the scoring for the Giants.

Prior to the game, Bryant showed his emotions, when the Cubs showed a video for Bryant, who was the 2015 National League Rookie of Year, the 2016 NL Most Valuable Player and helped lead the Cubs to their first World Championship since 1908, when they defeated the Cleveland Indians in a seven-game series after they trailed the Indians three games to one.

Bryant also received the number 17 off the famous Wrigley Field scoreboard and also received a 2016 flag that honors the Cubs World Series Championship.

The Cubs took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Frank Schwindel hit his 12th home run of the season off of fourth inning, as he led off the inning with the solo home run off of Jarlin Garcia.

In what was a bullpen game for the Giants, Dominic Leone took the mound for the Giants when they took the field when the game started and did not allow a hit and struck out two in his two innings of work.

Garcia, who gave up the only run of the game to the Cubs to Schwindel, went 1.1 innings, allowing one run on one hit, walked one and struck out one.

Zack Littell then came to replace Garcia, and he struck out both batters he faced to end the bottom of the fourth inning and also picked up a base hit in the top of the fifth inning.

Following Littell, the Giants sent Jose Alvarez, Camilo Doval, Tyler Rogers, Tony Watson and Jay Jackson to the mound.

After the Schwindel home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Cubs lone other hit came off the bat of Schwindel in the bottom of the sixth inning.

LaMonte Wade, Jr., tied up the game for the Giants in the top of the sixth inning, as he reached on an infield single that scored Belt; however, Wade, Jr., was thrown out at second base, when he attempted to reach second base.

NOTES: Jose Quintana was placed on the paternity list and Jackson was recalled from Sacramento.

When Wade Jr., drove in the winning run on Wednesday afternoon at Coors Field, it was fifth and sixth RBIs in the ninth inning or later this season that have either given the Giants the lead or tied up the game.

UP NEXT: Kevin Gausman goes for his 13th win of the season on Saturday afternoon, as he takes the mound for the Giants, while the Giants will send Zach Davies to the mound.

#1 After the Oakland A’s (76-64) snapped their four game losing streak to the Chicago White Sox (80-60) on Wednesday night the A’s turned around and won another ball game against the Sox 3-1 on Thursday afternoon. The A’s need to continue winning to keep their post season hope alive.

#2 The A’s 5.5 games behind first place Houston Astros in the AL West a tall order to try and chase the Astros from here to the end of the season.

#3 Another tough customer for the A’s is when the visiting Texas Rangers pay the A’s a visit on Friday night. The Rangers although their last in the AL West and 30 games back have won seven of their last ten games and have given the A’s fits since the second half of the season started.

#4 One of the key developments in the A’s keys to winning in the Sox series is their baserunning they are 37 for 40 in stolen bases since Starling Marte has joined the club and Marte has 21 of 37 steals and the A’s as a team are 85.1% in stolen bases which is fourth in the American League.

#5 Starting pitchers for tonight at the Oakland Coliseum for the Texas Rangers RHP Glenn Otto (0-0 ERA 1.86) and for the A’s Paul Blackburn (0-2 ERA 4.12) a 6:40 pm PDT first pitch.
