San Francisco 49ers podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson: Struggling 49ers continue their rough and tumble schedule in New Orleans this Sunday

San Francisco 49ers Running back Raheem Mostert (31) is out of the line up against the New Orleans Saints this Sunday at the Superdome in New Orleans (USA Today file photo)

On the 49ers podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 Jeremiah, there has to be very little doubt that the 49ers (4-5) took a tough couple of loses and playing in just four short days for San Francisco with a vast injury list didn’t help either.

#2 Jeremiah, you got to see how the 49ers just struggled since losing their starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and really now depend on quarterback Nick Mullens, how much pressure has this been on Mullens.

#3 Talk about some of the key players the 49ers will miss out of their line up this Sunday in New Orleans going without Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson and will be replaced by JaMycal Hasty and Jerrick McKinnon in the back field.

#4 The New Orleans Saints (6-2) quarterback Drew Brees was limited in practice this week and was also limited leading up to last Sunday’s win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in that landslide 38-3. Do you see Brees getting just enough rest and practice to be ready against the 49ers this Sunday?

#5 Jeremiah break it down for us as the 49ers try and snap their two game losing streak in New Orleans on Sunday how do you see this match up?

San Jose Earthquakes podcast with Marko Ukalovic: Quakes should be at full strength for playoff on Nov 22 in KC

The San Jose Earthquakes stadium will sit silent throughout the playoffs as the Earthquakes will be traveling for all of the playoffs which it opens on Sat Nov 22 against Sporting KC (@ SJEarthquakes photo)

On the San Jose Earthquakes podcast with Marko:

#1 The San Jose Earthquakes opened the last game of the season against the Seattle Sounders without Jackson Yueill, Andy Rios, and Carlos Fierro due to yellow card accumulations and an injury.

#2 Marko, talk about Shane Salinas, Luis Felipe, and Cade Cowell who replaced Yueill, Rios, and Fierro.

#3 Although the playoffs weren’t at stake as both teams had clinched for post season already. What would you say were some of the take aways in the Seattle match as the Quakes head into the playoffs.

#4 Chris Wondolowski had been key in the home stretch of the season scoring twice in a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake Oct 28th and had a goal in the 3-2 win over LAFC on Wed Nov 4th.

#5 The Quakes next opponent of the first round of the playoffs on Sat Nov 22 Sporting KC who finished first in the Western Conference with three straight wins to finish the regular season. Taking that into account what are the Quakes odds?

San Jose Sharks podcast with Len Shapiro: Will Google and BART development give Sharks no choice but to leave San Jose?

SAP Center as it looked for the 25th Anniversary of the San Jose Sharks franchise the team might consider moving out of San Jose if Google, BART and other developments take over their parking, traffic, and parking concerns cut into their fan base. (file photo from NHL.com)

On the SJ Sharks podcast with Len:

#1 The San Jose Sharks say that parking and construction from the nearby Google project will cut into their parking lot. The Sharks who wrote a letter to their fans saying that they had concerns about Google taking part of the Sharks parking lot would cut into the team’s revenue.

#2 Did the City of San Jose have a hand in the planning because the Sharks are certainly a huge part of the South Bay sports community particularly in the San Jose city limits where they and the San Jose Earthquakes play and they would be a huge void if they left.

#3 Sharks president Jonathan Becher said the team supports development but said that the neighborhood shouldn’t have to be suffocated by a rash of 65 new buildings on 84 acres nearby the Caltrain station and BART station across the street from where the Sharks play. BART is expected to move in by 2030.

#4 Gridlock is a huge concern for the Sharks in the neighborhood with Google, fans coming to SAP Center, an expected 30,000 workers and 5,900 apartments for new housing.

#5 If the Sharks do get frustrated and move elsewhere they can’t move to Chase Center in San Francisco because they don’t have ice and in Sacramento at Golden One Center who also doesn’t have ice. The only place they can go to is the Oakland Coliseum Arena where they can fit ice but will the Sharks want to go Oakland and leave a downtown location?

For the second consecutive week, California had a game cancelled due to Coronavirus. The Golden Bears’ scheduled game against Arizona State on Saturday has been cancelled, the schools announced, due to COVID-19 concerns. Later on Friday afternoon the Pac 12 moved Cal to play at the Rose Bowl against UCLA for Sunday morning.

ASU athletic director Ray Anderson said in a statement that a number of positive cases of COVID-19 included “multiple student-athletes and coaching staff members, one of which is Head Coach Herm Edwards.”

Anderson added that the undisclosed number of positive tests put the Sun Devils below the Pac-12’s minimum threshold of 53 available scholarship players under the conference’s game cancellation policy.

Cal won’t have to wait another week as they were supposed to play at Oregon State next Saturday but now will get their first game in at the Rose Bowl. The Bears’ first game against Washington, slated for Nov. 7, was cancelled after Cal had a positive COVID-19 test.

Edwards, meanwhile, said he and his family are “fine,” and encourage people to “take the virus seriously, wear masks, employ social distancing measures and get tested whenever possible.”

Edwards is the second head coach to test positive for COVID-19 this week. Arkansas coach Sam Pittman will miss the Razorbacks’ game against Florida after testing positive.

The Miami Marlins of Major League Baseball became the first team of any of the four professional sports leagues in the United States when they announced today the hiring of Kim Ng, a female executive as their new General Manager.

She is the first female GM in Major League Baseball history. Ng will turn 52 next Tuesday, after graduating from the University of Chicago Ng went to work as a Intern for the Chicago White Sox, where she worked for 21 years, later an executive with then NY Yankees and LA Dodgers.

“On behalf of principal owner Bruce Sherman and our entire ownership group, we look forward to Kim bringing a wealth of knowledge and championship level experience to the Miami Marlins”. CEO Derek Jeter said in a statement.“I entered Major League Baseball as an intern and, after decades of determination, it is the honor of my career to lead the Miami Marlins as their next general manager,” Ng said in a statement.

Just like the Brooklyn Dodgers were pioneers in 1947 when General Manager Branch Rickey signed Jackie Robinson as the first black player in MLB, the Miami Marlins are the first team to sign a woman as their General Manager. Florida is the third most populous State in the country and one of the most diverse.

Congratulations to the Miami Marlins organization and Good luck to Kim Ng.

Stay well and stay tuned

Cal Bears Football podcast with Michael Duca: Covid cancels another game for Cal; Trip to ASU all for naught

Cal Bears and ASU Sun Devils kickoff on Sat Nov 14th at Frank Kush Field at Sun Devil Stadium (photo from calbears.com)

Cal Bears Football podcast with Michael Duca:

#1 Outbreaks have been the norm in college football Cal’s opener last week against Washington and this week at ASU was cancelled as in week one a player tested positive and his linemates were quarantined those same players are still in quarantined shortening the Bears defensive line forcing the game to be canceled.

#2 Midweek Cal head coach Justin Wilcox had to wonder if there would be a game at all. This week how hard is that on a coaching staff and the players when you have to stop and then prepare again.

#3 I know you’ve talked about the tight Covid-19 protocols from the Berkeley Public Health Department which has Cal’s entire defensive line under quarantine which expires Saturday night.

#4 The game for Saturday at ASU had been a question mark and the players have been working out and the defensive line have been allowed to do some individual supervised workouts.

#5 Wilcox said he’s complained regarding the way the Berkeley Public Health Department has handled deciding who sits on the Bears. Wilcox said they would like to know why that some of the players he has are in quarantine when they are negative.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes: 49ers will have hands full in New Orleans on Sunday

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan stands on the sidelines at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara on Thursday Night Football Nov 5th against the Green Bay Packers (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 The 49ers continue to suffer the injury bug. This is what hampered them during their loses in Seattle Nov 1st and against Green Bay Nov 5th.

#2 The week of Nov 1st was a cruel week not just for injuries but San Francisco had a short turnaround after losing to the Seahawks on Nov 1st and the hosted the Green Bay Packers four days later on Thursday Night Football Nov 5th and lost that one as well.

#3 With staring quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo out and Nick Mullens under center now how much pressure has things been on Mullens in those last two games.

#4 Also this week head coach Kyle Shanahan said the status for the offensive line players running back Raheem Mostert (ankle), Tevin Coleman (knee), both will not play in New Orleans on Sunday. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel status is unknown and wide receiver Trent Taylor (back) didn’t practice.

#5 Joe, set it up for us the 49ers are nine point underdogs going into Sunday’s game and the Saints absolutely clobbered the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Sun Nov 8th 38-3 holding Bucs quarterback Tom Brady to 209 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions. How do you see this game Sunday?

Headline Sports with Jessica Kwong podcast: NFL is trying their best to enforce wearing masks but it’s not working; Will Morris stay on as Falcons head coach?; plus more

Raheem Morris the interim head coach at the Atlanta Falcons has turned the team around winning three of their last four games after going 0-5 the question will he get noticed after many black coaches have been turned down for head coaching jobs in the NFL? (file photo from the Atlanta Falcons)

On Headline Sports with Jessica:

#1 Another high profile name landed on the Covid 19 list for this week when Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger tested positive on Tuesday. The NFL says they’ve done their very best warning players about wearing masks which they have not.

#2 The Dallas Cowboys and the Steelers were involved in a post game scrum exchanging pleasantries after last Sundays’ game and now it was reported that four players on the Steelers including Roethlisberger have Covid 19.

#3 Atlanta Falcons (3-6) head coach Raheem Morris inherited the job after former head coach Dan Quinn was fired after the Falcons started the season at 0-5. After taking over the team Morris won two straight games before losing last Sunday. Morris was the former defensive coordinator before taking over as head coach and there is worry that Morris who is a black head coach might not get a second chance in the NFL if he doesn’t turn the Falcons around for the rest of this season. Second chances for black head coaches in the NFL are rare.

#4 Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rogers has questioned whether or not the NFL is really following Covid 19 protocols based on the science. One issue that was brought up is up can dap it up after a game with teammates and opponents but you can’t sit down and have lunch with them.

#5 The Las Vegas Raiders (5-3) after their latest victory against the Los Angeles Chargers in a narrow close game are vying for their third straight win as they host the Denver Broncos (3-5) on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium a win here could further push the Raiders hopes towards a their post season dreams.

Stanford Cardinal Football podcast with Jerry Feiteltberg: Mills and Weddington being checked if they are Covid 19 free

Stanford quarterback David Mills (15) drops back to look for a receiver during the Big Game last season against the Cal Bears on Nov 23, 2019 at Stanford Stadium (file photo from mercurynews.com)

On the Cardinal podcast with Jerry F:

#1 Jerry how big was it that Stanford’s quarterback David Mills and wide receiver Connor Weddington both missed opening week in Oregon against the Ducks?

#2 The Cardinals’ defensive end Trey LaBounty also was missing from action last Saturday as he also was positive for Covid-19. The Cardinal lost quite handedly 35-14 and missing LaBounty and the defense was a big part of that loss.

#3 As of Tuesday Stanford head coach David Shaw indicated that a fourth unnamed player has also contracted Covid. As of Wednesday the Cardinal who host the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday have not indicated if the game would be postponed as of yet.

#4 Shaw also said he has no idea of the timeline when the players would be back but at midweek knows that some decisions have to be made soon and the Cardinal are trying to avoid postponing the game on Saturday.

#5 Last week the Cardinal had Jack West starting who threw 154 yards and third stringer Tanner Mckee who threw for 62 yards neither threw for a touchdown in the loss. The Buffaloes got by the UCLA Bruins in a shootout 48-42 in their last game last Saturday the Buffaloes can provide a lot of offense. Jerry set this game up for us.
