The Phoenix Mercury stole home court advantage with a 117-91 blowout of the Las Vegas Aces at the Michelob Ultra Arena.

“Effort, we didn’t have it tonight,” said head coach Bill Laimbeer. “They played harder because they wanted it more than us.”

Laimbeer wasn’t happy with his team’s performance, but also was unhappy with the referees.

“Getting a little tired of the referees and how we’re being refereed,” said Laimbeer.

Kelsey Plum led the Aces with 25 points off the bench, going 10 for 17 from the field including 3 for 8 from three-point range.

The Aces had six players score in double digits, while shooting 52.2% from the field.

The Aces just couldn’t find a way to stop Mercury guard Diana Taurasi, who dropped 37 points, hitting eight three-pointers.

Phoenix started the game fast, building a 17-point lead in the first quarter.  The Mercury controlled the game after that.

The Aces and the Mercury are now tied 1-1 in the best of five game series.

The Aces will travel to Phoenix to play game three of the WNBA semifinals on Sunday.

~ September 30, 2021

~ ANAHEIM– San Jose Sharks goalie James Reimer stayed in net the whole game as the Sharks closed out September and the road part of their preseason, 3-1 over the Anaheim Ducks Thursday.

It was Reimer´s first full game of the preseason as he saved 24 of 25 shots. Combined with Sunday´s game, San Jose went 1-1 versus Anaheim down at the Honda Center. The Sharks scored three goals in each contest, this one resulting in a win. A la both contests, the regulation winning team also won the bonus shootout after, as Lane Pederson went high over the second goalie of the night for the Ducks, Anthony Stolarz.

San Jose went net neutral with special teams, going 1-of-4 on the power play and giving up a shorthanded goal, as Anaheim went 0-for-3. Sharks´ coach Bob Boughner commented on the power play, ¨…it’s nice to get the third goal on the power play, but I liked our mentality of just simplifying, put some more pucks and bodies at the net. That’s what we’ve been trying to stress here in camp.¨

Ryan Merkley had his first goal and assist of the preseason and seven other San Jose skaters earned points.

10 seconds into the game, there was a fight between the Sharks’ Jeffrey Viel and the Ducks’ Simon Benoit. This would be the first of a combined nine penalties in the first period, three of them occurring concurrently.

At 6:15, Adam Raska shoved Benoit into the away bench which caused the door to open. Benoit ended up leaving the ice and Sam Carrick retaliated, charged with a roughing penalty.

With a 2-on-1, Anaheim´s Benoit-Olivier Groulx had no problem with that, scoring his second goal versus San Jose this preseason as he went top shelf. Buddy Robinson and goalie John Gibson earned the primary and secondary assists on the shorthanded netter 32 seconds later.

It took nine minutes for the Sharks to get their first shot on goal. Gibson was able to corral Radim Simek´s attempt.

San Jose tied the game up at 12:49.  Alexander ¨Sasha¨ Chmelevski attacked from the left and Merkley and Dylan Gambrell from the right, with Merkley credited with the goal. It was all three skaters’ second points of the preseason.

At 17:28, both Viel and Carrick were charged with their second penalties of the night, roughing.

With 25 seconds left in the opening period, Gambrell was cited for hooking, giving the Ducks a one-man advantage. The Sharks ended up outshooting Anaheim 10-8.

The second period was limited to one goal and one penalty, which both occurred around halfway, at 9:05 and 11:05. Benoit also returned to the ice.

In the middle of the right faceoff circle, Raska bounced the puck off the board and sent the puck straight across to Viel as Viel quickly went around Gibson stickside. This gave San Jose their first lead in Anaheim this preseason.  Artemi Kniazev was also credited with an assist.

The Ducks’ Jacob Perreault was the only one charged with a call, roughing, though afterwards multiple skirmishes broke out.

Both teams finished the closing period with multiple penalties, Anaheim with more and the one that resulted in a goal.

The Sharks’ Kevin Labanc made a clean shot from the left faceoff circle, scoring at 15:40. Merkley and William Eklund got the assists, Eklund´s second of the preseason.

Up Next: San Jose will face the Ducks one more time this preseason, but first time at home, Monday October 4 at 7pm.

A’s take on Astros to end season; Series opens at Minute Maid Field Friday night

A’s Take On the Astros to End the Season

By Barbara Mason

It has been a mixed bag for the Oakland A’s the past week. It’s been sheer madness. Last week they were swept by the Mariners in a four series followed by an A’s sweep of the division leading Houston Astros. Last Monday the A’s again fell to the Mariners in a three game sweep. The loss yesterday was the twelfth loss in a row to the Seattle Mariners. The A’s cannot seem to crack this team and it has been beyond frustrating.

Starting tomorrow the A’s will finish their season in a three game series, again, with the Houston Astros. Hoping to duplicate last weeks series it would be a nice way to finish the season.

Now that the playoffs will have to wait until next year some wins over Houston would be a very good thing. Chris Bassitt had said that the team is very disappointed. They had the playoffs in clear view until they stumbled for the better part of September losing 15 games.

It was inconsistent play that was the A’s demise. A lot of trouble in the bullpen and at times the starters. They did have a bit of a drought when it came to hitting here and there. The defense was consistently solid one of the bright spots in the season.

So here we have the Houston Astros one last time. Oakland will not have the booing fans that they did in Oakland. The only place right now that the Astros are not hassled is right here at home in Houston.

At the time of this story the Astros were undecided as far as pitching. Oakland will send Sean Manea to the mound. His record is 10-10 with an ERA of 3.94. Matt Olson figures to be a factor in this weeks games. He has had 38 home runs this season and will no doubt add one or two more.

So it will be a bittersweet ending for the Oakland A’s. They were in contention for postseason action almost the entire season. Now it has come down to; maybe next year. Despite all of it the A’s gave their fans alot to cheer about this season. They had some great games and I believe they have a bright future. Yes there is some work to do but they will get it done; Skipper Melvin will see to that.

Mariners 4-2 win mathematically eliminate A’s

The seventh inning sacrifice that ended the Oakland A’s post season hopes when the Seattle Mariners Ty France hit a fly to score Dylan Moore for the go ahead run at T Mobile Field in Seattle on Wed Sep 29, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason and Jeremiah Salomonson

The red hot Seattle Mariners won their tenth out of their last 11 games to knock the Oakland A’s out of the Wild Card race on Wednesday night with a 4-2 victory at T Mobile Field in Seattle. While the A’s were eliminated the Mariners are still in the hunt for a shot at a second Wild Card.

The Mariners Ty France got a seventh inning sacrifice fly that put the M’s in front and Seattle got an insurance run from Abraham Toro who hit a home run with two outs in the eighth inning it was Toro’s first blast since Aug 31st.

The Mariners are just a half game back of the Boston Red Sox in the AL Wild Card for the second spot. The Mariners have done so well in rising to the top in the Wild Card they are just 1.5 back of the New York Yankees for first in the Wild Card.

The A’s had nothing but tough luck against the Mariners and took a 12th straight loss for the Mariners it was a franchise record for the most consecutive wins against a team in their history. The loss Wednesday snaps the A’s post season appearances for the last three straight years.

The first place Houston Astros in the AL West would have clinched the West but the Mariners win held the Astros back and their magic number is down to one. The Mariners have executed so well in winning their last 10 of 11 they did it in offense to come back or take leads as France’s sacrifice fly which drove in Dylan Moore. Moore had moved to second on a JP Crawford hit and run. Toro’s two run blast put the Mariners on top for the rest of the game eliminating the A’s.

The A’s have the day off on Thursday and are in Houston to open a three game series against the Astros on Friday night for a 5:10 pm first pitch at Minute Maid Field in Houston. The A’s Sean Manaea will start Friday (10-10 ERA 3.94) the Astros have not announced a starter yet.

Sounders score three unanswered goals en route to 3-1 win over Earthquakes

Seattle Sounders forward Raul Ruidiaz, right, celebrates with teammate Cristian Roldan, left after scoring a goal against the San Jose Earthquakes in the first half at Pay Pal Park in San Jose on Wed Sep 29, 2021 (AP News photo)

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE–Seattle is a force to be reckon with thanks to their dynamic duo of of Raul Ruidiaz and Cristian Roldan.

The two were involved in all three goals the Sounders scored as they cruised to a 3-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday evening at Pay Pal Park.

San Jose had its two match winning streak snapped. The Western Conference leaders have won two matches in a row and now have 51 points on the season.

Seattle (15-5-6-51 points) drew first blood in the 25th minute. Roldan serviced a ball over to Ruidiaz at the top of the D box. Ruidiaz dribbled in without any interference from a Quakes defender and beat Quakes goalie JT Marcinkowski with a left-footed shot for his team leading 15th goal of the season.

Things took a turn for the worse for San Jose (8-10-9-33 points) late in the first half when they conceded a penalty shot in the 41st minute. Roldan got in behind the Quakes defense inside the box and a diving attempt by Marcinkowski where Roldan was tripped up, resulted in a penalty by referee Allen Chapman.

Ruidiaz converted the penalty kick to the far left corner for a brace and 16th goal of the season in the 42 minute.

The Quakes didn’t generate any quality scoring chances in the first 45 minutes as they only attempted two total shots.

Seattle scored its third unanswered goal four minutes into the second half. A turnover by the Quakes in their defensive zone led to Jimmy Medranda servicing the ball into the middle from the left side as Roldan swooshed in and deflected the ball with his right foot past Marcinkowski for his fourth goal of the season in the 49th minute.

They’re a do a great job,” said Chris Wondolowski regarding Seattle’s tactical play. “Especially with their back three (defensive backs). Their best trait is they are able to push out and those three center backs do such a great job.”

The Quakes broke Sounders goalie Stefan Frei’s bid for a shutout two minutes later when Seattle conceded an own goal. Marcos Lopez serviced a ball into the middle where Benji Kinkanovic raced in with a sliding attempt but the ball was redirected in by Sounders defender Shane O’Neill.

That would be as close as San Jose would get in trying to earn any points during the match. Their offense was out of sync, misfiring on passes and moments of indecision led to Seattle laying back and playing a prevent defense throughout the second half.

“In the first half we weren’t able to find that path,” said Quakes head coach Matias Almeyda regarding the Sounders clogging up the middle of the pitch. “We made mistakes. And that means I think we didn’t have control of the game and couldn’t get to the final third of the field.”

Seattle countered whenever San Jose tried to press but weren’t able to add on as they were content with the three points.

Frei finished the match with three saves to earn the victory. Marcinkowski made two saves on five shots on target in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished with 10 corner kicks. Seattle had just two.

The Quakes hold a 11-15-8 all-time record against Seattle Sounders FC, including a record of 5-5-5 at home. San Jose and Seattle had traded 1-0 road victories in their first two meetings this season.

Seattle has an 9-2-2 road record this season and are 6-1-0 in their last seven matches away from home.

UP NEXT: San Jose travel up to Vancouver to take on the Whitecaps on Saturday 10/2 at 7:00pm at BC Place.

Inching Closer: Giants go small, win 1-0 over Arizona to reach SF-era record 104 wins

By Morris Phillips

SAN FRANCISCO–Didn’t think the record-breaking, home run-hitting Giants had this in their arsenal?

Well, you would be half right, and not the half you believed in.

The Giants nudged themselves past the Diamondbacks, 1-0 on Wednesday night at Oracle Park to reduce their magic number to win the NL West to three. And they did it as small–offensively–as possible, winning on Kris Bryant’s sacrifice fly in the seventh inning that scored Steven Duggar.

The Giants (104-54) have hit a franchise-record 237 home runs and posted a bunch of shutouts, not surprising balance for a team threatening to join the 1975 Reds and 1986 Mets as the winningest single season teams in National League history since divisional play began in 1969. But winning 1-0?

Well, a quick look back reveals they won 1-0 on April 18 at Miami when Alex Dickerson singled home a run in the third inning that stood up. And they bested the Nationals on June 11 when Buster Posey homered in the fourth inning, after Max Scherzer–know that name?–departed with a groin issue after throwing just 12 pitches. But winning 1-0 on a sacrifice fly is smaller brand of offense that, well, the Giants hadn’t accomplished this year.

“We pitched really well and the bullpen’s been nails all year,” starting pitcher Alex Wood said. “I can’t wait for October.”

A couple of things turned this one into a nail biter. D’Backs starter Merrill Kelly played Houdini, walking four and allowing three hits in five innings of work while not allowing a run. Three Arizona relievers followed and were equally as stingy, but Noel Ramirez allowed a single to Tommy La Stella, Steven Duggar then pinch ran for La Stella and stole second. Lamonte Wade Jr. grounded out, moving Duggar to third, where he stood when Bryant delivered the game-deciding sacrifice fly.

A manufactured run if ever there was one, but the Giants will take it.

The Giants were denied a far more comfortable margin of victory in the eighth when Duggar was robbed by Gary Varsho’s catch at the top of the left centerfield wall with two runners on.

Wood was stellar through six innings, allowing three hits and striking out six. Wood had the look of a competitor attempting to insure that he will prominently featured in the Giants’ postseason rotation by issuing no walks then retiring for the evening after throwing an economical 74 pitches. Three relievers (Dominic Leone, Jarlin Garcia and emerging high leverage guy, Camilo Doval) finished the D’Backs, combining to allow one hit with none of three throwing more than 11 pitches in their inning each.

The Giants achieved an incredible first with the win, becoming the first San Francisco Giants’ team to win as many as 104 games in a season. What’s next? The NY Giants of 1905 won 105, the NY Giants of 1904 won 106, and the Mets and Reds–the most inconic NL teams of this era–both won 108.

“It’s a huge accomplishment,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “This team has done so many good things. To say that this club has won more games than any other San Francisco Giants team is quite fulfilling.”

At press time, the Dodgers were locked into an incredible, back-and-forth affair with the Padres, with the score 9-9 in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Dodgers led 5-1 after two, then trailed 9-5 in the bottom of the seventh, only to score five times in the eighth to regain the lead. If the Dodgers lose, the Giants magic number would be reduced to two.

On Thursday, the Diamondbacks–now an incredible 54 games out of first place in the NL West–will bring Madison Bumgarner to the mound in his first pitching assignment in San Francisco since he left the Giants after the 2019 season. The Giants have not announced a pitcher, but Scott Kazmir’s name was being bandied on Twitter as if he would get the call on Thursday, but no announcement has been made.
