The Spartans return home to host the No. 18 Oregon State Beavers on Sunday, September 3 at 12:30 pm Pacific.

Pac 12 podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Conference down to only four teams Commissioner says Apple could attract new teams

Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff speaks at the NCAA college football Pac-12 media day Friday, July 21, 2023, in Las Vegas. (AP News photo)

Pac 12 podcast with Michael Wagaman:

#1 Jerry since last week’s Colorado Buffaloes announcement regarding leaving the Pac 12, Pac 12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff has not made any statements regarding the Buffaloes and also with additional departures from Washington and Oregon.

#2 Washington State Cougars team president Kirk Schulz and athletic director Pat Chun said that while it’s disappointing that up to five teams are leaving there is always a possible positive outcome that could unfold. They both are hopeful over the Pac 12’s deal proposal with Apple.

#3 Teams remaining after four teams that have left, Cal, Stanford, Oregon State and Washington State, Kliavkoff will have to do some quick work after this season in getting other schools to join the conference.

#4 In terms of how this works for the Cal the school you cover their alumnus and donors have to be concerned that they no longer will get to see the rival teams especially USC and UCLA.

#5 One interesting note is that Oregon and Washington will be entering the Big Ten on a reduced payout while USC and UCLA will get more than $60 million each for media rights. That’s the rewards of being in the second media market.

#6 Jerry you had a chance to cover two Stanford Cardinal appearances in the Rose Bowl how does this break up of the Pac 12 effect the Rose Bowl tradition.

Pac 12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff addresses the press during Pac 12 media day in Las Vegas on Fri Jul 21, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the NCAA Sports podcast with Michael Roberson:

#1 It was was Pac 12 Media Day Friday when Pac 12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff addressed the media and was not surprised about being asked the hot topic in the room regarding the departures of USC and UCLA after this season.

#2 Next up for curiosity what direction will the Pac 12 go after the two Southland schools leave will the Pac 12 got back to being the Pac 10 or will they disband and merge teams with other conferences?

#3 Kliavkoff said regarding getting the right deal for the Pac 12 is important and that he and the board are trying to get an answer expeditiously.

#4 Television plays a huge part in the future of the Pac 12 and Kliavkoff is trying to find an answer, he said that it’s been long term in the shift in the media market and short term that it has caused some hic ups.

#5 USC and UCLA leaving the Pac 12 voids a lot of the traditional match ups and Kliavkoff is taking that in consideration. The Pac 12 could end up going back to the Pac 10 and that would grow the College playoff format. If there is decision to merge teams to other conferences Kliavkoff will have to explore what that looks like.

Pac 12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff addresses the media on NCAA basketball media day on Tue Oct 12, 2021 in San Francisco. Kliavkoff said recently that he had expected playoff expansion would increase league revenue but with UCLA and USC leaving that could change the revenue picture quickly (AP file photo)

On the Pac 12 podcast with Jerry F:

#1 Pac 12 college presidents and chancellors Friday gave the Pac 12 the nod to “explore all expansion options” after UCLA and USC decision to move to the Big Ten.

#2 The Pac 12 presidents said they are committed to upgrading the Pac 12 for the excellence of the students athletes. With UCLA and USC leaving there is no doubt it leaves a huge void.

#3 LA is a huge TV market second in the nation it’s a big task to replace a USC and UCLA and the Pac 12 as of yesterday are not sure where to start looking.

#4 As of Friday’s announcement the Pac 12 colleges are not only scrambling to replace USC and UCLA but Washington and Oregon are also considering joining the Big Ten what impact will that further on the Pac 12 to lose the Huskies and Ducks.

#5 The loss of USC and UCLA not only impacts the football and basketball programs but all the other sports as well and some of the rivalries as well. The Pac 12 has also suffered in it’s TV Network as well in recent years.

Cal Bears Thursday game wrap: USC makes work of Cal 88-56; Bears drop to 8-9

calbears.com photo: Cal Bears Matt Bradley (20) takes it to USC on Thursday night, Bradley led Cal with 13 points in Southland

By Michael Duca and Morris Phillips

It was too much Jonah Mathews and Daniel Utomi as the USC Trojans (13-3) defeated the Cal Bears (8-9) on Thursday night 88-56. For Mathews 19 points and for Utomi 17. It was the eighth win in nine tries for USC.

Onyeka Okongwu contributed with eight rebounds and scored 12 points in the victory. The Trojans dominated the contested as Cal could only lead for the first minute and a half and it was all Trojans after that.

The Trojans sank 14 three pointers and took their liberties about it with Mathews chalking up three 3 pointers. Cal’s Matt Bradley scored 13 points as Cal’s top scorer. Bradley normally noted as the top scorer on the Bears could only do so much as the Trojan defense proved just effective.

Cal guard Kareem South scored 12 points but the Bears failed in 20 tries out of 25 to make the three point shot. From the free throw line the Bears suffered just as well going 11-22. The Trojans were well in front in each quarter leading Cal by at least 16 points per each half and pulled down 45 rebounds to Cal’s 28.

The Bears go back to the drawing board as they head to Pauley Pavilion for a Sunday night game with the UCLA Bruins (8-9) for a 5:00 pm tip. The Bruins were walloped by the Stanford Cardinal (15-2) in their last game 74-59.

Stanford to host USC for Pac-12 showdown on Saturday

By: Ana Kieu

The Stanford Cardinal look to continue their dominance on home field after last Saturday’s 31-10 rout of the San Diego State Aztecs at Stanford Stadium. SDSU has a chance versus Sacramento State this Saturday, but let’s focus on the Cardinal’s upcoming game versus USC, who is currently ranked No. 17. Stanford, on the other hand, is currently ranked No. 10. That being said, Stanford looks like they got the upper hand, but this is college football, and anything could happen.

It’s #BeatUSC week in the Palo Alto area, and the Cardinal appear to be confident coming into Saturday’s home game. A couple of things happened on the Stanford campus this Monday. First, head coach David Shaw, defensive end Dylan Jackson, and wide receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside held a press conference to address the media members on Stanford’s top-25 matchup with rival USC. Secondly, Arcega-Whiteside earned the Pac-12 Player of the Week with 3 touchdowns, 6 catches, and 226 yards. It was a well-deserved honor for Arcega-Whiteside, who’s on fire (or en fuego) as a Spanish-born WR with a 34-inch vertical leap along with hands that can catch passes for touchdowns.

Arcega-Whiteside told GoStanford.com, “As a receiver, that’s what you want, all you can ask for.”

Let’s not forget that running back Bryce Love had a 75-yard touchdown against USC at the Coliseum last year. I don’t know if Love will repeat that play, but it’s likely that he’ll do something on the field.

Since the Pac-12 Network is at Stanford all this week for Saturday’s The Pregame, so they decided to let placekicker Jet Toner take over their Snapchat @pac12conference. So if you’re on Snapchat, give the Pac-12 a follow if you haven’t already done so.

The Cardinal host the Trojans on Saturday at 5:30 pm PDT on FOX.
