Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff speaks at the NCAA college football Pac-12 media day Friday, July 21, 2023, in Las Vegas. (AP News photo)

Pac 12 podcast with Michael Wagaman:

#1 Jerry since last week’s Colorado Buffaloes announcement regarding leaving the Pac 12, Pac 12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff has not made any statements regarding the Buffaloes and also with additional departures from Washington and Oregon.

#2 Washington State Cougars team president Kirk Schulz and athletic director Pat Chun said that while it’s disappointing that up to five teams are leaving there is always a possible positive outcome that could unfold. They both are hopeful over the Pac 12’s deal proposal with Apple.

#3 Teams remaining after four teams that have left, Cal, Stanford, Oregon State and Washington State, Kliavkoff will have to do some quick work after this season in getting other schools to join the conference.

#4 In terms of how this works for the Cal the school you cover their alumnus and donors have to be concerned that they no longer will get to see the rival teams especially USC and UCLA.

#5 One interesting note is that Oregon and Washington will be entering the Big Ten on a reduced payout while USC and UCLA will get more than $60 million each for media rights. That’s the rewards of being in the second media market.

#6 Jerry you had a chance to cover two Stanford Cardinal appearances in the Rose Bowl how does this break up of the Pac 12 effect the Rose Bowl tradition.

NCAA/Pac 12 Football podcast with Michael Roberson: Pac 12’s plan once USC-UCLA departs conference

Pac 12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff addresses the press during Pac 12 media day in Las Vegas on Fri Jul 21, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the NCAA Sports podcast with Michael Roberson:

#1 It was was Pac 12 Media Day Friday when Pac 12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff addressed the media and was not surprised about being asked the hot topic in the room regarding the departures of USC and UCLA after this season.

#2 Next up for curiosity what direction will the Pac 12 go after the two Southland schools leave will the Pac 12 got back to being the Pac 10 or will they disband and merge teams with other conferences?

#3 Kliavkoff said regarding getting the right deal for the Pac 12 is important and that he and the board are trying to get an answer expeditiously.

#4 Television plays a huge part in the future of the Pac 12 and Kliavkoff is trying to find an answer, he said that it’s been long term in the shift in the media market and short term that it has caused some hic ups.

#5 USC and UCLA leaving the Pac 12 voids a lot of the traditional match ups and Kliavkoff is taking that in consideration. The Pac 12 could end up going back to the Pac 10 and that would grow the College playoff format. If there is decision to merge teams to other conferences Kliavkoff will have to explore what that looks like.

UCLA went into Saturday’s Pac-12 men’s basketball game against Stanford shorthanded, but their personnel situation was hardly noticeable.

The No. 7-ranked Bruins shut down the visiting Cardinal 66-43 at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, gaining sole possession of first place in the conference.

Jules Bernard led UCLA with 16 points as the Bruins (16-2 overall, 8-1 Pac-12) won their sixth straight game. The Bruins, meanwhile, had their own offensive struggles, hitting 22 of 59 from the field while missing 25 threes.

Isa Silva led the Cardinal scoring with eight points off the bench, and Harrison Ingram, Stanford’s leading scorer, was held to five points while committing four turnovers.

Cal Bears podcast with Michael Duca: Tale of the two halves defense picked up in second half Cal still lost

Cal Bears Matt Bradley takes a free throw shot against the Pepperdine Waves Wednesday night in Malibu. This was Cal’s second straight road trip as they return back to Berkeley on Saturday against USF (calbears.com photo)

On the Cal Bears podcast with Michael Duca:

#1 Michael, how big is it for Cal that they didn’t have to suffer too many postponed games, rescheduled games and pretty much rely on playing their home games at Haas Pavilion during this very strict Covid-19 shutdown.

#2 In Cal’s last game men’s basketball game at Pepperdine it was the tale of the two halves. The first half the Pepperdine dominated with a 44-30 whereas Cal improved the defense in the second half with the Waves just edging out Cal 32-30 but as you know it’s what the scoreboard shows at the end of the game as it was 74-62 Pepperdine.

#3 All things considered Michael did that second half show any improvements for Cal as they played a close second half against a very good Waves team who have made handy work of post season tournaments.

#4 Cal has now lost two straight including a loss to UCLA the game before Pepperdine they come back to Haas Pavilion for Saturday night’s game against USF (4-2). The Dons have won four straight after going 0-2. Knowing how well coached USF is how do you see this match up on Saturday?

#5 Michael talk about two of Cal’s top scorers from Wednesday’s game Grant Anticevich with 21 points and Matt Bradley who lead Cal with 27 points they had to work hard against the Waves.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Phillip Rivers who threw for two interceptions and lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars last Sunday will throw against the Minnesota Vikings at the Hoosier Dome (file photo from coltbeat.com

Headline Sports podcast with London Marq:

#1 Los Angeles County did not dispute or object to the idea to start the Pac 12 season for the USC Trojans and the UCLA Bruins football teams. The county said that as long as the athletic departments of both schools are adhering to the public health restricts pertaining to safety protocols on Covid-19 the county will permit both schools to play football this season.

#2 Critics are questioning if the Indianapolis Colts made a mistake in signing quarterback Phillip Rivers to a hefty $25 million one year deal. On Sunday Rivers threw into traffic getting picked off twice, Rivers did throw for 363 yards and the Colts lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-20.

#3 The New England Patriots face the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday Night Football at Centurylink Field in Seattle. The Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said of Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson that he doesn’t see anyone better in the NFL.

#4 London, after losing three straight the San Jose Earthquakes were able to losing another three games. They have tied three of their last four games including a 1-1 tie with the Portland Timbers on Wednesday night a game they were leading 1-0 before the Timbers tied it up.

#5 The Quakes get another shot at the Timbers on Saturday after seeing the Timber on Wednesday and again this Saturday and being another home match for the Quakes do you see this being an advantage for the Quakes.

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: Cal drops two in a row to Southland schools

latimes.com photo: The UCLA Bruins David Singleton (31) tries to put the block on the Cal Bears Matt Bradley (20) on Saturday night at Pauley Pavilion

Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1Cal (8-10) struggles again another loss this time to the UCLA Bruins (9-9) at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles 50-40 on Sunday

#2 Just a huge lack of offense by the Bears scoring only 40 and even though the Bruins weren’t setting any scoring records either the Bears just couldn’t break the glass ceiling at Pauley Pavilion.

#3 The Bears in the second half just couldn’t muster any scoring getting only 19 points was this a matter of just a bad offensive night or the Bruins found a way to hold Cal back?

#4 Matt Bradley led Cal in scoring with 17 it was not a 30 point night but he continues to be consistent in leading in scoring

#5 Cal (8-9) will try try again in the Big Game as Stanford (15-3) comes calling on Sunday Jan 26th at Haas Pavilion
