On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry F:

#1 Jerry the Stanford men’s next two basketball games have been canceled Dec 7 vs. Cal Poly and Wed 9th vs. Loyola Marymount and they will play at USC on Dec 13th. The Stanford women’s team will play at UNLV in Las Vegas until further notice due to the Santa Clara County Covid-19 restrictions directive.

#2 For Stanford football the Cardinal (1-2) are schedule to play in Seattle against the University of Washington Huskies (3-0) this Saturday Dec 5th and then will travel to face Oregon State (2-2) on Dec 12th. Jerry with these changes to the Cardinal home schedule do you see that effecting their play?

#3  In Stanford men’s basketball the Cardinal (1-2) in the Maui Invitational defeated Alabama to open the series but lost their last two games on Tuesday and Wednesday to North Carolina and Indiana.  Hoosiers who have a rich basketball tradition finished way ahead of the Cardinal with a 16 point win 79-63.

#4 The Cardinal men play to host Cal Poly on Mon

#5 Back to Cardinal football the Washington Huskies are on a three game win streak and are undefeated the Huskies in their last game narrowly defeated the Utah Utes 24-21. The Huskies quarterback Dylan Morris threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns. While the Stanford Cardinal won their last game against Cal by a one point 24-23 in a game the Cardinal won by blocking the Bears kicker Dario Longhetto’s extra point.

Buffalo Bills vs. San Francisco 49ers Monday Night Football preview by Jeremiah Salmonson

The San Francisco 49ers had a breath of fresh air on Sunday. They played against the Los Angeles Rams in SoFi stadium and came out with the win 23-20. Robbie Gould hit the game winning 43 yard field goal as time expired.

It was an impressive win for a 49ers team that had been struggling lately. They had lost the previous three games coming in and most people didn’t think they would fair well against the solid Rams team. It was a positive sign for the team after having most of this season lost to injuries and poor performance.

In the 49ers next matchup, on Sunday, they will take on the Buffalo Bills. The Bills are a solid team that I think will give the 49ers trouble. Josh Allen and his big arm will test the defense of the 49ers.

Meanwhile, the 49ers still have a banged up offense missing with starting quarterback Jimmy Garropplo and tight end George Kittle among others. They will need another solid performance from their defense and enough offense to keep the Bills in check.

My prediction: I believe the San Francisco 49ers will prevail again in an upset. I wouldn’t bet money on it, but I believe the Bills will stumble against the coaching of Kyle Shanahan and company.

The game is set for Monday Night Football at 5:05 PM PST at State Farm Stadium in Glendale AZ .

 

 

Indiana thumps Cardinal in third game at Maui Invite 79-63

Indiana rebounded from a lackluster semifinal loss and defeated Stanford 79-63 in the third-place game of the relocated Maui Invitational men’s basketball tournament, held this year in Asheville, N.C.

Sophomore Trayce Jackson-Davis led the Hoosiers (3-1) with a career-high 31 points. He was 10-of-16 from the field and 11-of-14 at the free throw line, thanks to Stanford fouling him 11 times.

Race Thompson scored 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds for Indiana, Armaan Franklin scored 13 points along with eight rebounds and five assists, while holding Stanford freshman Ziaire Williams to four points.

Williams was 1-for-10 shooting, including 0-for-5 on 3-pointers, and fouled out with 6:06 remaining.

Daejon Davis and Oscar da Silva led Stanford (1-2) with 18 and 17 points, respectively. The Cardinal shot 36 percent from the field, including 5-of-20 behind the arc for the second straight day.

The Hoosiers never trailed after the opening minute and led 31-26 at halftime, but an early second half run gave iU a double-digit lead. Stanford cut that lead to four at 43-39, but a six-point spurt sparked by back-to-back 3’s by Rob Phinisee put Indiana up 49-41 at 12:09 of the second half.

In the next couple of minutes, Phinisee and teammate Trey Galloway each picked up their fourth personal foul. But Jackson-Davis scored 10 of Indiana’s next 11 points, helping the Hoosiers build a 15-point lead with 6:04 to play.

Stanford’s next two scheduled games against Cal Poly and Loyola Marymount are cancelled. The Cardinal’s next game is on Sunday, Dec. 13, in Los Angeles against USC.

Bob Meyers, Golden State Warriors General Manager made the announcement that two Warriors players tested positive for covid-19 and therefore the Training Camp has been delayed.

The Warriors first exhibition game was schedule for December 12 and the team’s opener of the regular season is scheduled for either the 22nd or 23rd of December. This stuff is day-to-day, and decisions have to be made quickly, but it is not an easy Lay-up.

Last week the NBA stated in a health-and-safety protocol guide that was distributed to teams that any player who tests positive, must wait 10 days and then be monitored in individual workouts for two more days.

For the player to return to work (even if they were asymptomatic when tested positive) and to return to work the players must go 10 days or more after the first positive test or onset of symptoms or test negative at least 24 hours apart via PCR testing.

Just like all sports leagues, the NBA is at the mercy of what happens with this novel virus. The virus does not have or cares about any schedule. People here in California are in a state of awareness and have all the information they need, but still people will test positive.

It is disheartening when officials like Governors, Mayors and other elected officials have such contempt to “say one thing and do another” for the people that are actually paying their collective salaries. This surely doesn’t help.

A lot of people say, well if they do not care, why should I care? Many at the beginning of this Pandemic predicted vaccine would take years, are startled that it has taken less than 1 (one) year to develop (under the government operation Warp Speed) by bio-pharmaceutical companies, like Pfzier Moderna and AstraZeneca, and others on the way, are waiting for approval from the FDA.

Interestingly enough, The United Kingdom already approved the Pfizer vaccine to give to its population. Bureaucrats here in the US usually take their time, the red-tape is always the obstacle, but we can only hope these vaccines will get the green light soon to help the people of the United States and other countries that are for sure ready to acquired and use. Talking about our Bureaucrats, isn’t ironic that the United Kingdom has approved the US vaccine before our own FDA?

#1 David as you know Santa Clara County is completely shut down no sporting events of any kind allowed from the elementary school to the professional level totally excluded. Now a news flash that California Governor Gavin Newsom said the state of California will eventually have to shut down instead of the current county by county.

#2 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said this whole thing came as a surprise to him and that the team was not informed of the decision to move home games elsewhere. The San Jose Spartans will also have to move their home games this Saturday as well.

#3 So this is Christmas: The 49ers are coming off their slight edge win from last Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams and now face the Buffalo Bills at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on Monday Night Football. The Bills 8-3 are coming off a 27-17 win against the LA Chargers and Bills quarterback Josh Allen threw for 157 yards, touchdown and an interception.

Tar Heels slip past Cardinal in Maui Invitational semis 67-63

The 14th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels used a driving hoop from Leaky Black with 1:02 to play – along with a late free throw – to seal a 67-63 win over Stanford Tuesday in the relocated Maui Invitational semifinals, played in Asheville, N.C.

Freshman Caleb Love led UNC (3-0) with 16 points.

North Carolina won the game despite committing 24 turnovers, which the Cardinal converted into 22 points. Neither team led by more than three points over the last 6 ½ minutes until Black’s clutch free throw with 5.5 seconds remaining.

The Cardinal (1-1) shot 39 percent from the field, including 5 of 20 from behind the arc – 1 of 11 in the second half. Daejon Davis was the top scorer for Stanford with 18 points, followed by Oscar da Silva with 13 points and Ziaire Williams with 10.

North Carolina shot 50 percent in the second half, and outrebounded the Cardinal 43-23. UNC used that rebounding edge to score 18 second-chance points.

The game featured a reunion for UNC coach Roy Williams and Stanford coach Jerod Haase, who played and coached for Williams at Kansas. Haase beat his mentor years ago while coaching Alabama-Birmingham, but has lost the last such meetings.

On Wednesday, North Carolina moves on to face No. 17 Texas in the championship game, and Stanford meets Indiana for third place.

On the Raiders podcast with Barbara:

#1 Las Vegas Raiders (6-5) quarterback Derek Carr called Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons (4-7) trash and that the 43-6 loss was a punch in the face for the city of Las Vegas and the Raiders organization.

#2 The Raiders after playing a razor close game loss against the Kansas City Chiefs last week lost their second straight game on Sunday at Mercedes Benz Stadium to the Falcons. The Raiders wound up turning the ball over five times and the defense just couldn’t stop the Falcons who were at one time an 0-4 team.

#3 You know the saying “on any given Sunday” and the way that Falcons head coach Raheem Morris had prepared the team the Falcons have shown improvement each week since Morris took over when the team was 0-4.

#4 The Falcons who were the underdogs in this game dominated both halves of the game and both sides of the football. The defense held the Raiders to a field goal in each of the second and third quarters, and Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan came out firing on all cylinders throwing for 185 yards and two touchdowns.

#5 It’s back to the drawing board as the Raiders who are on a two game losing streak head to New Jersey to face the New York Jets (0-11) at the Meadowlands on Sun Dec 6th. The Jets who have not won a game all season and lost convincingly to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday 20-3 will be the underdogs but again after the Raiders Sunday experience in Atlanta you can’t count even the Jets out.

#1 The Toronto Blue Jays have new stadium plans on the drawing board and are considering tearing down their current baseball home Rogers Centre. The argument in Toronto is why not spend millions instead of billions on getting some super star players instead of a new stadium. Also the Jays didn’t even play in Rogers Centre last season as they were relegated to play in Buffalo due to Coronavirus protocol restrictions in Canada.

#2 After the San Francisco Giants last season nearly made the playoffs without Madison Bumgarner who signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks and catcher Buster Posey who opted out because he didn’t want to chance getting Covid and spreading to his newborn child how much credit do you give to team general manager Farhan Zaidi and Giants manager Gabe Kapler.

#3 The Miami Marlins general manager Kim Ng made her first deal as the Marlins acquired pitcher right hander Adam Cimber from Cleveland Cimber had a 4.30 ERA and this deal will be part of history as Ng is MLB’s first woman general manger and this is her first deal.

#4 In Pro Football: A lot of game cancelations and Covid-19 spreading the Denver Broncos weren’t too shocked about their results after losing to the New Orleans Saints 31-3. The Broncos lost all their quarterbacks to positive Covid-19 tests and Kendall Hinton who was on the practice squad as a receiver was put into service as the starting quarterback for Denver and had a rough time of it throwing for only 13 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.

#5 In an article you wrote about Santa Clara County which has a strict stay at home order and Coronavirus protocols that ban all sports from not just the fans but no players or games. The San Francisco 49ers will be playing weeks 13 and 14 in Arizona as they will not be allowed to play at Levis Stadium until after Dec 21st.

Freshman Ziaire Williams scored 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds for Stanford on Monday, leading the Cardinal past Alabama 82-64 in the Maui Invitational men’s basketball tournament being played at Asheville, N.C.

Williams is considered one of Stanford’s highest-rated recruits in the program’s history. The 6-foot-8 forward is a McDonald’s All-American and is rated as high as a top-5 NBA lottery pick if he decides to leave Stanford after one season.

Bryce Wills scored 15 points for the Cardinal, and Oscar da Silva and Daejon Davis added 13 points each.

The Crimson Tide was led by Jahvon Quinerly with 14 points and 10 from Jaden Shakelford.

Williams hit a jumper with 7:42 left in the first half to break a 25-25 tie. The Cardinal then finished the first half with a 16-4 run, taking a 41-29 lead into the break.

Stanford held a 47-31 rebounding edge. Williams and Spencer Jones each had eight boards.

The Cardinal (1-0) will meet No. 14 North Carolina (2-0) in the next round of the tournament, being played in North Carolina instead of Hawaii due to COVID-19 issues.

Cal Bears basketball game wrap: Strong second half solidifies Bears a win in home opener 60-49 against Nicholls

It had been 275 days since the Cal Bears had played at Haas Pavilion so it has been a long time coming. Monday night the Bears played their home opener taking on Nicholls State. Cal was leading at half-time 23-18. The Bears sealed the deal with a strong second half surge winning by the score of 60-49. Cal outscored Nicholls in the second half 37-31.

Cal’s Matt Brandley turned in a solid performance scoring 26 points in this third game of the season. Grant Anticevich also had 11 points in this game. The Bears sank 10 3-pointers courtesy of starters Anticevich with three and Brandley who also had three. Makale Foreman and Ryan Betley both turned in two 3-pointers each.

While the Bears did trail early by a slim margin 4-3 they really turned it around going on an amazing 18-2 run inside of nine minutes in the first half. Nicholls made it interesting when they tied up the game at 23 early in the second half. It was a 3-pointer by Brandley that put the Bears ahead for the remainder of the game. They never looked back taking this game by a comfortable margin.

The Bears now have a 2-1 record after beating Northwest WA handily while dropping one to Oregon State for their only loss this season. The Bears will meet their biggest challenge Thursday night when they take on Arizona State. That game will also be played at Haas with tip-off at 7:30. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
