Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer became the career coaching wins record holder for NCAA Division I women’s basketball Tuesday, when the Cardinal defeated Pacific 104-61 in Stockton.

It was win No, 1,099 for VanDerveer, passing legendary Tennessee coach Pat Summitt’s previous record of 1,098. VanDerveer received video congratulations from Billie Jean King, Steve Kerr, John Elway and former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on the ESPN telecast after the record-setting victory.

VanDerveer, 67, could have reached the milestone sooner if not for game cancellations and postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, VanDerveer’s win totals include two seasons at Idaho and five at Ohio State before taking over the Stanford program in 1985.

Her career win-loss record in 1,099-253 (.813), including NCAA D-I championships in 1990 and 1992. VanDerveer has led her teams to the NCAA tournament 31 times out of 34. She is a four-time national coach of the year and a 15-time Pac-12 coach of the year.

In 1996, VanDerveer took a year off from Stanford to coach the Olympic women’s basketball team to an 8-0 record and the gold medal. Thirty of VanDerveer’s Stanford players have played in the WNBA, 12 of them first-round draft picks, including Nneka Ogwumike of the Los Angeles Sparks.

Overall, VanDerveer tralls only Mike Krzyzewski of Duke for most D-I coaching victories. Coach K has 1,159 as of Tuesday.

On the women’s victory list, Geno Auriemma of Connecticut is next at 1,092.

The Golden State Warriors met the Sacramento Kings Tuesday at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento. The Kings’ Kyle Guy knocked down a three-point shot as the buzzer sounded to give the Kings the win 114-113.

The Warriors were without Draymond Green, rookie James Wiseman, and second-year player Eric Paschall. Warriors head coach, Steve Kerr, selected Juan Toscano-Anderson to start at strong forward in place of Draymond Green.

Other players in the starting lineup were Kelly Oubre, Jr, Andrew Wiggins, Kevon Looney, and Steph Curry. The Kings lineup included Marvin Bagley III, former Warrior Harrison Barnes, Richaun Holmes at the center position, Buddy Hield, and De’Aaron Fox in the backcourt.

The Kings, coached by former Warriors assistant Luke Walton and Warriors head coach Steve Kerr wanted to see how the players would perform as the season starts in just a week. The starters would play in the first and third quarters, and the backups would see action in the second and fourth quarters.

As for the game,  Curry scored eleven of the team’s first fifteen points in the first quarter. Curry looked to be in mid-season form. The Warriors finished the quarter leading 27-25. The Kings won the second quarter as they outscored the Warriors 37-20 to finish the first half with a 62-47 lead. Curry led the club with 16 points in 16 minutes of action.

The Kings went up by nineteen early in the third quarter. The Warriors rallied to cut the deficit to seven at the end of the third quarter. Curry continued to play well. Kevon Looney and Marquese Chriss played well. Wiggins and Oubre made clutch buckets to help the Warriors climb back into the game. Sacramento led 88-81 at the end of three.

In the fourth quarter, Curry, Wiggins, Oubre, and Looney were on the bench. Kent Bazemore, Brad Wanamaker, Chriss, and Damion Lee led the W’s comeback. The Dubs led 113-111 with six seconds left to play. The Kings’ Kyle Guy, who was hot coming off the bench, connected with his sixth three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to win it for Sacramento.

Game Notes and Stats: Curry led the Warriors with 29 points in 29 minutes of play. Oubre and Wiggins each had 12. Chriss finished the night with 17 points, nine rebounds, and he made three threes. Bazemore and Lee each had seven. Rookie Nico Mannion saw action for the first time in his career. Brad Wanamaker finished with ten points, five rebounds, and three assists.

Buddy Hield finished with 18, De’Aaron Fox 17. Hassan Whiteside, always tough on the Warriors, had eleven points and nine boards. Kyle Guy finished with twenty points. He made six threes in ten tries.

The two teams meet Thursday night again in Sacramento. The game will tip off at 6 pm.

Stanford, behind Oscar da Silva’s career-high 32 points, defeated Cal State Northridge 82-71 Tuesday in non-conference men’s basketball at Northridge, Calif.

Da Silva also pulled down nine rebounds, was 9 of 11 from the field, and sank all 14 of his free throws. It was the first time a Cardinal scored 30 points in a game since KZ Okpala did it on Feb. 3, 2019, against California.

Da Silva, who was averaging 17.3 points per game, scored 17 of the Cardinal’s 36 first-half points.

Ziaire Williams scored all 12 of his points in the second half for the Cardinal (3-2), followed by Noah Taitz with 12 points and Spencer Jones with 10.

CSUN (3-2) was led by Lance Coleman III, who sank six 3-pointers and scored 20 points. TJ Starks was next for the Matadors with 19 points, five rebounds, four assists and five steals.

Stanford, which held a 37- rebounding edge, has temporarily relocated out of Santa Clara County until Dec. 21 due to COVID-19 restrictions on practices and events.

On Saturday, the Cardinal open Pac-12 play against Arizona at Santa Cruz. CSUN, meanwhile, will face California.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Sometimes professional sports loses focus and gets silly in many ways. The NBA looks the other way about China, because that represents a huge money market for them, yet they speak about justice. Last year China’s Tech-Giant Tencent reached a deal of $1.5 billion to remain the league’s exclusive digital partner and the US largest partnership outside the US.

A market of one-and-a-half billion people, they buy many more Lebron jerseys than the rest of the world combined. But Communist China to this date is one of the world’s leading countries when it comes to human rights violations. Amnesty International, a worldwide (non-political organization) whose mission is about human rights, says about one million Muslims ethnic groups Uyghur’s, Kazakhs and others are still missing.

Amnesty International has interviewed more than 100 people outside of China whose relatives in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region (XUAR) are still missing, as well as individuals who said they were tortured while in detention camps there.

There are forced-labor concentration camps in China. They have interviewed these people who are family of those missing and have knowledge of what’s going on. To be fair to the NBA, they are in the business of selling basketball, lawmakers in Washington make policy; but anybody can see that money is over principal many times over Back in July, ESPN investigation finds coaches at NBA China academies complained of player abuse and lack of schooling.

The NBA has a “complicated” relationship with China, and unfortunately that might continue. This covid-19 came from China, but the vaccine was Made in the USA, so there, we definitely look much better. Here in America we feel good when the Cleveland Indians say they are going to change their name.

Nobody should oppose to the Cleveland Baseball Club changing their name. They are a private business and they can do that, just like anybody else who owns a business. They want to look good in the eyes of the public.

The Atlanta Braves (who are still named Braves) had Chief Noc-A-Homa, a fan for two decades who retired before the 1986 season. This was a fan of the Braves, who paid for his admittance to every game, but chose to dress like an Indian Chief and the team basically adopted him, he was not an employee of the team.

Maybe the Cleveland Indians can change to the Cleveland Baseball Club, just like the NFL Washington Redskins a year ago, or the Cleveland Rockers, for the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame in that city. But with all our problems during this 2020 and everything that is going on in this world, does anybody really cares about changing the name of a team?

Who knows what the sports landscape might look 20, 30, 40 or more years from today? Pacifist could eventually revel against team’s names like: Raiders, Pirates, Chiefs, Vikings, Buccaneers and such.

Atheists and Agnostics will do the same against teams that are named: Padres, Angels and Saints. Maybe the National Audubon Society will get upset about the: Cardinals, Orioles, Ravens and Blue Jays or the ACLU about the exploitation of ‘man by man’ with teams names like Athletics, Giants, Twins, Royals and Patriots. I think Houston and NASA will always be happy with the Astros and New York with the Yankees, so they are…Safe!!

Florida Gators forward Keyontae Johnson who is currently in an induced medical coma after collapsing on Saturday at Florida State. Johnson’s grandfather Larry DeJarnett said he’s under ICU medical care. (AP News file photo)

On That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast with Barbara:

#1 Barbara talk about Florida basketball player Keyontae Johnson whose been in a medically induced coma after collapsing in a game at Florida State on Saturday. Nothing has been said as to what caused Johnson to collapse his grandfather Larry DeJarnett said that “He may have had activity in the brain, so they induced the coma,”

#2 Cleveland is taking a look at some new names to replace the Indians name. The first name that came up was Spiders a name that the Cleveland franchise had back in the late 19th century. The name Spiders is very seldom used in sports the University of Richmond used the name and the defunct San Francisco Spiders of the International Hockey League used the name for one season (1995) before folding. From the sound of it Cleveland might be going with the Spiders name because of the civic connection and it’s been pretty popular with fans.

#3 ESPN is making all sorts of concessions in terms of how their schedule televising MLB games which would include the post season first round of the playoffs if that sounds like the Wild Card that might go the best three out of five. ESPN is considering televising 30-40 games down from 90 when Fox and TBS’ contract expires.

#4 The Brooklyn Nets Kyrie Irving who had not spoken to the media since joining the Nets said his boycott against the media is over. Irving had been fined $25,000 for issuing statement through Instagram regarding the media. After getting fined he also called the media “pawns” the boycott is supposedly over but know one really knows how long he’ll talk to the media before putting the brakes again.

#5 St Louis pitcher Adam Wainwright who won the MLB Roberto Clemente Award one week ago. Wainwright pooled with 150 other big league players, including Garth Brooks Teammates for kids and Home Plate Project involving Texas Ranger pitcher Kyle Gibson. What does it mean for someone to win the Roberto Clemente Award?

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris the Cal Bears got an unexpected win over the USF Dons (5-3) on Saturday at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley was this one as good as it gets?

#2 The Dons put on an offensive performance in the first half with a 37-29 but in the second half the Bears came out and turned things around outscoring the Dons by ten 43-33.

#3 Morris, what fired up the Bears to play such a second half like that. They brought in a three game losing streak and that included their recent loss at Pepperdine. There were some doubters regarding Cal before this one started.

# 4 Speaking of that second half the Bears got offensive help from Grant Anticevich 18 pts, Andre Kelly 22 pts and Matt Bradley 17 pts the offense distributed nicely and coach Mark Fox had to be relieved by his players who finished in double digits.

#5 The Bears next are at Boston College Dec 22 who are 1-5, 15th in the ACC. BC has a four game losing streak. Coming off this win against the Dons after losing three straight before which Bears team will show up on Dec 22?

Sacramento Kings game wrap: Kings turn it around for 121-106 win in Portland

The Sacramento Kings and Portland Trailblazers played their second pre season game in Portland on Sun Dec 13, 2020 (live over lay photo from nba.com)

By Jeremiah Salmonson

The Sacramento Kings embarked on their tune-up games on Friday night. Things did not go as planned. The Kings defense let them down big time in a loss to the Trail Blazers in Portland 127-102.

The Kings remained in Portland to rematch the Blazers on Sunday.

In the game, the Kings showed much more resilience on the defensive end of the floor. The Kings allowed the Trail Blazers to score 106 points while holding the Blazers to 22 points or less in two quarters.

The Kings didn’t allow a “meltdown quarter” like Friday night when they gave up 40 points in the first. On the offensive side of the ball, the Kings were able to score 121 points. For a 121-106 victory tally on Sunday. Richaun Holmes led the Kings in scoring by putting up 14 points. Buddy Hield led the game in assists with seven. That was an unusual sight for the Kings but something that undoubtedly helped win the game.

The Kings overall looked much better in the second game in Portland than the first. They are looking to get some sort of rhythm down before starting the regular season on December 23rd in Denver.

Keys to success for the Kings this year appear simple in my eyes. The Kings must play with pace and play good defense on the other end. The Kings have the players to knock down shots in the open court; they just need to get themselves the looks.

Next Up: The Kings will travel home to take on the NorCal rival Golden State Warriors at Golden One Center on Tuesday night. The game is set for 7 PM PST.

Stanford’s Pac-12 hoop opener will have to wait; Coronavirus issues strikes again

For fans waiting to see the Stanford Cardinal forward Jaiden Delaire making those midair layups anytime soon against USC in Los Angeles will just have to wait as their game was postponed due to Covid 19 protocols. The coronavirus pandemic strikes college sports again, as it has forced the postponement of Stanford’s scheduled men’s basketball game against Southern California.

USC announced in a statement that a confirmed case of COVID-19 has prompted the Trojans men’s basketball program to pause its team activities. This action forced USC to postpone its home game at Galen Center against Stanford less than three hours before tipoff.

The decision was made under the Pac-12’s basketball policy. The Trojans did not have the minimum number of scholarship student-athletes available for the game due to COVID-19 protocol.

The statement added that the Pac-12 Conference will work with both schools to find a date to reschedule the contest.

San Francisco’s playoff hopes takes gut punch after 23-15 loss to Washington on Sunday

Its time to stick a fork in the 49ers’ plans for a return trip to the playoffs in 2020.

With a 23-15 loss to the NFC East-leading Washington Football Team in Glendale, Arizona at the home stadium of the Cardinals, the 49ers fall to 5-8 on the season. San Francisco trails the 7th-seeded Cardinals (7-6) in the conference. The 49ers face off against the Cardinals in Week 16, but will need a lot of help to get back to the postseason.

Quarterback Nick Mullens made his seventh start of the season in place of Jimmy Garopplo and it was another tough afternoon for Mullens and the 49ers’ offense. He had one of his roughest days, committing two backbreaking turnovers that Washington turned into 14 points.

With San Francisco clinging to a 7-6 lead late in the second quarter, Mullens fumbled at the San Francisco 47-yard line after being sacked by Washington defensive tackle Daron Payne and recovered by rookie defensive end Chase Young who returned it all the way for the go-ahead touchdown to put Washington ahead 13-7.

Young, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and a heavy favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year, finished with six tackles and a sack. Washington’s defensive line had no trouble getting to Mullens, sacking Mullens four times on the day

In half where Washington only managed 57 passing yards, Mullens was just awful. He completed 10-of-20 passes for 103 yards with zero touchdowns and zero interceptions in the first half.

With Washington leading 16-7 late in the third quarter, Mullens threw a bone-headed pass intended for fullback Kyle Juszczyk in the flat at the Washington 24-yard line that was intercepted by defensive back Kamren Curl who returned it 76 yards for a touchdown to push Washington’s lead to 23-7 to close out the quarter.

After that turnover, television cameras picked up backup quarterback C.J. Beathard warming up on the sidelines but Mullens would remain in the game.

Mullens would connect with Juszczyk on a 6-yard touchdown pass (followed by a successful 2-point conversion to wide receiver Kendrick Bourne) to make the score 23-15 midway in the fourth quarter following an 11-play, 75-yard drive in 4:42.

On the 49ers ensuing drive, Young batted down a key third-down pass to force a punt with less than seven minutes remaining in the game.

Mullens 25-of-45 passes for 260 yards with one touchdown and one interception. His passer rating was 68.2.

Rookie wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk set career-highs in catches (10), targets (16) and yards (119).

Aiyuk was the only true play-maker San Francisco had on the day after losing wide receiver Deebo Samuel for the game on the 49ers’ first offensive play. Samuel left the game with a hamstring injury and is expected to undergo a MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the injury.

Running back Raheem Mostert led the 49ers with 14 carries for 65 yards. Fellow running back Jeff Wilson Jr. rushed for 31 yards on 11 carries, including a 1-yard touchdown run that gave San Francisco a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

Even in a tough game offensively for San Francisco, the unit ran more plays (76 to 62) recorded more total yards (344 to 193), more first downs (21 to 12) and won time of possession (32:11 to 27:49) over Washington. Mullens and the offense had success moving the football, but Washington made it tough for the 49ers to score when it they had to.

Washington played musical chairs at quarterback against the 49ers.

Alex Smith finished 8-of-19 for 57 yards and one interception in the first half, but a right calf issue before halftime knocked him out for the remainder of the game. Smith was replaced by backup Dwayne Haskins in the second half.

Haskins completed 7-of-12 passes for 51 yards.

Tight end Logan Thomas led Washington with six catches (on 7 targets) for 43 yards.

Second-year wide receiver Terry McLaurin needed just 23 yards to record his first career 1,000-yard receiving season, which he did by hauling in two catches for 24 yards against the 49ers. For the season, McLaurin has 73 catches for 1,001 yards receiving.

With top running back Antonio Gibson inactive with turf toe, Washington leaned on backup running back J.D. McKissic. The fourth-year running back finished with 11 carries for 68 yards.

In Week 15, the 49ers travel to Dallas to take on the Cowboys in a game that was flexed out of Sunday night into the afternoon window. The Cowboys hammered the Cincinnati Bengals, 30-7, at Paul Brown Stadium in Week 14.

Washington returns home to take on the Seattle Seahawks, who kept the New York Jets (0-13) win-less with a 40-3 crushing at Lumen Field in the Pacific Northwest.
