San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes: For Cowboys and 49ers it’s just about playing out the clock

Washington Football Team strong safety Kamren Curl (31) puts the hit on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens (4) in the first half of Sun Dec 13th’s game at Glendale in State Farm Stadium (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 Joe, the loss to Team Washington last Sunday in Arizona one of the tougher loses for San Francisco this season. For 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens 260 yards, one touchdown, one interception.

#2 Mullens just couldn’t muster any offense in the second and third quarters where the 49ers were shut out.

#3 Washington used three quarterbacks to defeat the 49ers, starting with Alex Smith 57 yards and an interception, Dwayne Haskins 51 yards and no touchdowns, and Isaiah Wright who just threw an incomplete pass.

#4 Joe inspite of Mullens struggles 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is sticking with him for Sunday’s game as the starting quarterback against the Dallas Cowboys. Mullens has turned the ball over 12 times so far this season.

#5 The 49ers and Cowboys kickoff for a Sunday morning start rather than the originally scheduled Sunday Night prime time game. The change was made after the Cowboys and the 49ers suffered recent loses, were eliminated from  the playoffs, and neither starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo 49ers and Dak Prescott Cowboys will be returning.

Golden State Warriors game wrap: Warriors look sharp as they beat Kings 113-107

Golden State Warrior Stephen Curry (30) makes it look all too easy, Curry led Golden State with scoring with 29 points in the Warriors win over the Sacramento Kings at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento (Mercury News/Bay Area News Group photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Warriors finished the short three-game preseason with a win over the Kings in Sacramento Thursday night by 113-107. The regular season starts Tuesday night, December 22nd, when the Warriors meet the Brooklyn Nets in New York City.

The Nets will feature former Warrior Kevin Durant and former Cleveland Cavalier and Boston Celtic star Kyrie Irving. Steve Nash is the new Nets’ coach, and former Houston Rocket coach Mike D’Antoni will be his right-hand man on the Nets’ bench.

Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr had to be pleased with his team’s performance Thursday night. Andrew Wiggins and Kelly Oubre, Jr showed they could fit in with the Warriors’ up-tempo game.

In the first half, the Warriors outscored the Kings 65-62. Wiggins made his first five shots and tallied sixteen points in the half. Oubre had fifteen. Curry was 3-for-13 from the field in the first half. However, Stephen Curry made three threes in three tries. He finished the first 24 minutes of the game with 13 points. Marquese Chriss, coming off the bench, had five. Reserve guard Brad Wanamaker had nine.

The Warriors moved the ball well and were very good defensively. Andrew Wiggins impressed the coaching staff with his aggressive moves to the hoop.

During the five-year run when the Warriors went to the NBA five consecutive seasons, one of the keys to their success was their domination in the third quarter. This year’s team showed they are ready to be a playoff team.

They outscored the Kings 27-19.  Curry was on fire as he knocked down 16 points. Kelly Oubre and Marquese Chriss performed also did well. The Warriors led 92-81 after three quarters. The Warriors did not use Curry or Oubre in the fourth quarter.

Wiggins was on the floor until he fouled out with about six minutes left in the game. Kerr inserted Damion Lee, Nico Mannion, Mychal Mulder, Juan Toscano-Anderson, and Kevon Looney to finish the game. The Warriors win it 113-107.

Game Notes and Stats: Neither James Wiseman nor Draymond Green was in the lineup Thursday night. They have been practicing with the team and should be ready to play next Tuesday against Brooklyn.

Wiseman, the number two pick in this year’s NBA draft, is expected to be a rim protector. He is nineteen years old and does not have much experience under his belt. Had he played against the Kings, it would have been interesting to see how he would handle Hassan Whiteside. Whiteside is a seven-footer who has given the smaller Warrior centers fits over the years. Whiteside will get his chance to show what he can do Tuesday night. Draymond Green will be back, too.

Curry led the team with 29 points, six rebounds, and three assists. He saw 28 minutes of action. Oubre had 22, Wiggins 19. Marquese Chriss tallied nine and had 12 boards. Jordan Poole had eleven, Brad Wanamaker nine.

Former Warrior Harrison Barnes paced the Kings with nineteen. The Warrior defense held the Kings Buddy Hield to eleven and De’Aaroin Fox to eight. Hassan Whiteside had twelve.

As mentioned above, the season starts next Tuesday night in Brooklyn at Barclay Center with a 4 pm tip.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Omar Vizquel Managing in Mexico faces Charges

Omar Vizquel is facing some serious accusations from wife Blanca regarding domestic violence. MLB is investigating the allegations. (USA Today photo)

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Just a few days ago, ex-major league shortstop and candidate for the Hall of Fame Omar Vizquel was named manager for the Toros de Tijuana (LMB) Mexican Baseball League. A man who has dedicated most of his adult life to the game of baseball is now facing one of his biggest challenges, outside the baseball world.

Blanca Vizquel, 36 said her husband physically abused her in 2011. This was before they were married in 2014, but also describes other occasions of abuse and after a heated argument this past August she decided to file for divorce.

Omar Vizquel said: “I have never hit or been violent towards my wife, Blanca. Any accusation to the contrary is false” and added, “I never expected this divorce proceeding to play out in public, but I will continue to defend myself and my name against these false accusations. Our divorce should be settled in a court of law, not in the court of public opinion.” Information published by The Athletic.

Vizquel, a shortstop played in the major leagues for 24 seasons, won 11 Gold Gloves (only Ozzie Smith at shortstop won more, 13) and was one of the best fielding players in history at any position. During the most recent voting for the Hall of Fame, Omar Vizquel received 52.6 percent of the vote (short of the 75% needed for election).

Nevertheless a serious potential member of the exclusive class at Cooperstown. As a broadcaster, the best double-play combination I ever saw was the Cleveland Indians, Roberto Alomar at second-base and Omar Vizquel at shortstop.

Although it is not the most famous in history, it is hard to find any two guys playing like magicians at those positions. A TV producer could easily do a 30 minute program just showing their wizardry making double-plays. Roberto Alomar was elected to the Hall of Fame and I can only hope same for Omar Vizquel in the future.

But these kinds of stories are not exactly what the people at Cooperstown want to see. Omar Vizquel was always a great interview, playing or as a coach in the major leagues. As recent as 2018, he managed the Winston-Salem Dash of the Carolina League, an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. He guided the club to an 84-54 record.

One of the best interviews I did with Vizquel was when he was playing with the Giants. As I remember I told him he could chose a career between broadcasting, since he is extremely well versed in baseball and very articulate and the other was a Manager.

He didn’t hesitate to tell me, “Yo quisiera ser manager algún día” trans- “I would like to manage someday”. On another occasion he was at the Giants Fanfest at the Park; when he came over to The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame table/exhibit and took his time to talk to many of his adoring fans.

He has always been a very popular player. No matter whom he played for. This sad news of the domestic dispute is the typical “He said, she said” or (if you will) “She said, he said” story. A player of the caliber of Omar Vizquel, worthy of election to the Hall of Fame (in my humble opinion) cannot afford these days to be involved in these types of disputes.

Nobody really knows what goes on behind closed doors. I wish him as well as Blanca, the best possible outcome. We are all human. As the man whose birthday we are celebrating on Dec. 25th said: “whoever is free of sin, let him cast the first stone”.

Feliz Navidad – Merry Christmas

Headline Sports podcast with Tony R:

#1 Tony the Raiders are coming off one of the toughest defeats this season against the Indianapolis Colts in their last game last Sunday. The Colts got a good jump on Las Vegas early scoring ten points in each of the first and second quarters for a 20-14 half time lead.

#2 Raiders quarterback Derek Carr just couldn’t get any traction he did he one keeper for a score but 316 yards throw and only two touchdowns the Colts were just too much and Carr could only struggle under center all game long.

#3 Tony talk about the turnovers, Carr threw an interception and the other turnovers just threw Las Vegas’ game off and the Raiders never were in this one.

#4 Short turnaround the Raiders didn’t very much rest after playing last Sunday they go right back at it again tonight on Thursday Night Football that’s got to take a toll on teams with that short turnaround.

San Francisco 49ers-Dallas Cowboys preview: Both 49ers and Cowboys looking to get back in the win column

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens (4) throws against the Washington Football Team last Sun Dec 13, 2020 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale (photo from Houston Chronicle)

By Jeremiah Salmonson

The San Francisco 49ers are coming off a week of mixed feelings. They took on Washington quarterback and former 49ers quarterback Alex Smith as he made his return to the bay after an injury. In the game itself, the 49ers didn’t show up the way they would like. They lost the game 23-15.

The Cowboys are also having an underwhelming season. It was a predictable loss Dec 8th to the Ravens. They fell 34-17. The Cowboys did get a huge victory last Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals 30-7. So, both the 49ers and the Cowboys are looking to get back on track on Sunday.

49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo could be nearing a return to action. Coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday that Jimmy is at least a week away from returning to action. So, the quarterback for Sunday’s matchup will most likely be Nick Mullins.

George Kittle, a key piece to the 49er’s offense, also remains out due to injury.

The Cowboys are also dealing with some injuries of their own. Notably, Guard Zack Martin is dealing with a calf injury and could be gone the rest of the season. Ezekiel Elliot is also a little banged up but expected to play.

The game is set for 10 AM PST, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on CBS. The 49ers are unable to play in Santa Clara County due to COVID restrictions.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: MLB Now Recognizes Negro Leagues as Major League

Negro Leagues Baseball Museum sign in Kansas City. The Museum is excited about Negro League stats being part of the Major League Baseball records as announced Wed Dec 16, 2020 by baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred (AP News photo)

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-Gonzalez

A decision that should have been made many years ago, but obviously is a welcomed decision by Major League Baseball. When The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame was founded in San Francisco in 1998 the museum instantly classified the Negro Leagues as a Mayor League.

Black players born in Latin America or in the United States played in leagues in the Caribbean. Central and South America for decades, it was not considered an “accomplishment” because the abnormal thing to do is not to allow a player to play because of his skin color.

The United States was the only place in the world that black players could not play in the Major Leagues. Many players had to play in the Negro Leagues and many had at least the talent (if not more than enough) to be in the Major Leagues.

Now, Major League Baseball officially classifying 1920 to 1948 teams of the Negro League as Mayor League. Major League Baseball basically is making a right from something that was a “wrong” for decades and that is to be commended. Nobody can change history, but in cases like this, it is good to correct it and bring it in-line with current society. “All of us who love baseball have long known that the Negro Leagues produced many of our game’s best players, innovations, and triumphs against a backdrop of injustice,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement provided by the league. “We are now grateful to count the players of the Negro Leagues where they belong: as major leaguers within the official historical record.”

Note: Jackie Robinson played one season in the Negro Leagues before he was brought into the Major Leagues by Brooklyn Dodger’s Branch Rickey. 1947 Kansas City Monarchs he played in 47 games, 163 at bats, .387 average, 14 doubles, 4 triples, 5 home runs and 13 stolen bases. Although I do not always agree with Commissioner Manfred in his changes to the game, this is one time I give him the highest praise.

Stay tuned and stay well.

Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: 49ers and Cowboys won’t be in the Sunday Night Football limelight

image from fanical.com/San-Francisco/49ers

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 Getting shutout in the second and third quarters of Sunday’s game against Team Washington made it difficult for the 49ers to dig their way out of that 23-15 loss.

#2 Not much production on the offensive end of the ball for the 49ers Nick Mullens he threw for 260 yards and one touchdown and an interception.

#3 The 49ers (5-8) will play in Dallas against the Cowboys (4-9) this Sun Dec 20th in a game that was originally going to be on Sunday Night Football but was moved to CBS at 10 AM because the Cowboys and 49ers playoff chances had slipped away.

Headline Sports podcast with London Marq: Kings improved offense and defense could be the big difference for 2020-21 season

The new and improved Sacramento Kings led by De’Aaron Fox (5) seen in this Fri Dec 11 photo in Portland have the personnel that could push for post season. From all indications in pre season the Kings look like an improved team (AP News photo)

Headline Sports podcast with London Marq:

#1 It’s only the second exhibition season but after the Sacramento Kings split two games with the Portland Trailblazer in Portland and the Kings dominated for most of Tuesday night’s game against the Golden State Warriors at Golden One in Sacramento is the take away from that the Kings have improved and will be competitive?

#2 Bogdan Bogdanovic was dealt to the Atlanta Hawks after the Kings tried to deal him to the New Orleans Pelicans. Was it in the Kings plans not to hold onto Bogdanovic because he basically walked and the Kings really didn’t get anything for him.

#3 Last Sunday night the Kings after losing the first game of two to the Trailblazers handled the Blazers 121-106 and on Tuesday night the Kings dominated on offense and held the Warriors back on defense it’s exhibition but it could be a sign that they team is on the right path going into the season. The Kings De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Heild but lead the way in scoring.

#4 The Kings play the Warriors again on Thursday night at Golden One for the second game meeting. The Warriors have been focusing on their younger players to see what they can do, Warriors top shooters Kelly Oubre, Stephen Curry, and Andrew Wiggins provided some key offense.

#5 On Fox and Hield they both have a sense on scoring and getting that extra push for a win. They certainly got a drop on the Warriors early in Tuesday’s game.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: Santa Cruz home to three basketball teams; Raiders host Chargers for Thursday Night Football after four days rest; plus more

CSUN and the Stanford Cardinal battled at Cal State Northridge on Tues Dec 15, 2020. The Cardinal will be sharing the Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz with San Jose State, Santa Clara, and the Santa Cruz Warriors for home games until the Santa Clara County shutdown expires (gomatadors.com photo)

On That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Three colleges from Santa Clara County one location Santa Cruz. The Santa Cruz Warriors the main tenant at Kaiser Permanente Arena will share their building with three college basketball teams Santa Clara, Stanford, and San Jose State University. This move takes a lot of pressure off the schools who had no place to play until Santa Cruz stepped up as all sports in Santa Clara is under Covid 19 lockdown.

#2 Amaury the Las Vegas Raiders started the season with strong but they are fading quickly losing three of the last four games and the game that they won they barely beat a winless New York Jets team on Dec 6th.

#3 Recently it was announced that former Edmonton Oilers superstar Wayne Gretkey’s 1979 O Pee Chee hockey rookie card was worth over $1 million. Two theives who were arrested didn’t get their hands on the card but they did break into Gretzkey’s father’s house and took $500,000 worth of game used pucks, jerseys, sticks, skates, shoulder pads, pants, that the Great One used in NHL games. Brantford Police in Ontario arrested a 58 year old man and a 58 year old woman in the theft and all the property had been returned to Gretzey’s father.

#4 Amaury, how much influence will the Philadelphia Phillies Bryce Harper have on pushing the Phils to sign catcher JT Realmuto? Realmuto hit .266, 46 hits, 11 home runs and 32 RBIs for the 2020 season. There is a chance that Realmuto could wind up playing somewhere else according to reports.

#5 Two updates at the A’s Amaury, A’s team vice president Billy Beane who was rumored to take a partnership at the Boston Red Sox with team owner John Henry in non baseball related issues. At the time of the rumors it was reported that Henry and Beane would working on public traded business where it’s MLB policy that no teams are allowed to do business that’s publicly traded since then no word on Beane leaving for Bean Town.

#6 A’s general manager Billy Owen who looked like he would go to work for the Los Angeles Angels until the Halos ended up hiring Perry Minasian. Now that former A’s team president Sandy Alderson is the Mets team president there are strong rumors that Owens will be pursued for the Met’s GM job.

Sacramento Kings post game wrap: Kings just get by Warriors in first of two game exhibition at Golden 1 Center

The Sacramento Kings defense has improved as they held the Golden State Warriors in check for most of the game and ended up getting a one point win in the end at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento on Tue Dec 15, 2020 (warriorswire.com photo)

By Jeremiah Salmonson

The Sacramento Kings had a rough start to the NBA preseason. They lost the first game of two to the Portland Trailblazers in Portland and won the second game on Sunday to start the preseason schedule. The Kings were looking for a better showing as they returned home to Golden One Center on Tuesday night. They did when they had a good leads against the Warriors and in the end wound up with a one point win 114-113.

The Sacramento Kings welcomed their NorCal rival Golden State Warriors for their third preseason game. The Kings showed grit that had been missing in the first game. They managed to play defense when they had to and score when they had to.

The Kings played their best defense in the first two quarters limiting  Golden State to 47 points at halftime. The Kings managed to put up 62 points in the first half and had a nice pace going to enter the middle portion of the game.

Unfortunately for the Kings and their third-quarter woes, which had been well documented in past seasons came back to bite them just a little bit. Golden State outscored the Kings 34 to 26 in the third quarter. The Kings were able to hold on through in the final quarter, even being out paced by Golden State again. They were outscored 32 to 26 in the fourth quarter but still manage to win the game miraculously. The Kings Kyle Guy hit a game-winning buzzer-beater to give the Kings the win.

Guy finished the night leading the Kings in scoring with 20 points. It was an excellent showing for a second-year player who had been flying under the radar for Sacramento. The Kings hope he can continue this good play into the regular season.

Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 29 points.

Up next: the Kings take on the same Warriors on Thursday night at Golden One Center.
