On the Raiders podcast with Barbara:

#1 The Raiders have lost four of their last five games and still maintain second in the AFC West is there still any daylight for the Raiders to make post season?

#2 In the last game against the Los Angeles Chargers the Raiders just couldn’t hang and and the Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert on the final play during overtime reached over the goal line to get six points for a Chargers win 30-27.

#3 The Raiders had little turnaround time as previous to their Thursday Night Football game against the Chargers they had just played the Indianapolis Colts on Sun Dec 13th another game they had lost 44-27.

#4 The loss of Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is huge who will be out from 10-14 weeks due to a left groin injury wiping out his 2020 season. Raiders back up quarterback Marcus Mariota  did well standing in for Carr last Thursday throwing 226 yards and a touchdown. Mariota kept the Raiders in the game despite the loss.

#5 The Miami Dolphins(8-4) are in Allegiant on Saturday this will be a hard fought game for the Raiders. The Dolphins have won four of their last six games Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in his last game against the New England Patriots threw  for 145 yards and didn’t throw a touchdown but the Dolphins got by the Patriots 22-12. Barbara how do you see this match up?

Cowboys force four turnovers, take down 49ers 41-33 in Week 15

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Kendrick Bourne (84) leaps over the Dallas Cowboys Donavon Wilson (left) and Jourdan Lewis (26) catching a Hail Mary pass in the end zone in the second half in Arlington on Sun Dec 20, 2020 (AP News photo)

Staff Writer

DALLAS — For the second straight week, the 49ers defense held an opponent to ten points or less.

But offense and special teams didn’t do their part, committing four turnovers (three by quarterback Nick Mullens) as the Dallas Cowboys scored 24 points of turnovers to upend the visiting San Francisco 49ers, 41-33, Sunday afternoon in front of a sparse crowd at AT&T Stadium.

“I really wanted the guys to come out and play good football, and I think offensively, defensively and special teams guys did a lot of good things,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “When you have four turnovers, it doesn’t matter what you do, especially when you’ve got zero.”

San Francisco racked up 458 yards of total yards and controlled the clock for 35:56.

It marked the eighth straight game that the 49ers had two or more turnovers in a game; their longest streak since 2006. The turnovers have doomed the 49ers in recent weeks after a stellar performance from its defense.

Mullens completed 21-of-36 passes for 219 yards with two touchdowns, but threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter leading to 10 points that killed San Francisco’s chances at pulling the win out after trailing 27-24. He was also sacked twice.

It was also the sixth straight game that Mullens threw an interception.

San Francisco didn’t get off to the start it wanted to, falling behind Dallas 14-0 in the first quarter thanks to fumbles inside their own territory.

After the 49ers forced the Cowboys to punt following a 3-and-out, Dallas forced the first turnover of the game as kick returner Richie James fumbled at the San Francisco 23-yard line and recovered by the Cowboys.

The Cowboys took an early 7-0 lead thanks to a 1-yard touchdown run by backup running back Tony Pollard. Pollard started Sunday’s game in place of Ezekiel Elliott, who was sidelined by an injury for the first time in the two-time rushing champion’s career.

Pollard finished with 12 carries for 69 yards and two touchdowns. He was also big in the passing game, catching a team-high six catches for 63 yards.

On the ensuing drive, defensive end Demarcus Lawrence forced a fumble from Mullens that was recovered by linebacker Aldon Smith at the San Francisco 24-yard line. Five plays later, wide receiver Michael Gallup scored on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Andy Dalton to put Dallas up 14-0.

Mullens would help the 49ers climb back into the game on the 49ers’ third possession of the game, engineering a 13-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a 5-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jordan Reed to cut the Cowboys’ lead to 14-7 shortly before the end of the first quarter.

After the Cowboys added a 48-yard field goal by kicker Greg Zuerlein to push their lead to 17-7 in the second quarter, Mullens would find rookie wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk for a 2-yard score trimming the Cowboys’ lead to 17-14.

Aiyuk finished with nine catches for 73 yards and a touchdown on 13 targets. For the season, the rookie leads the 49ers with 50 catches for 660 yards and four touchdowns.

In the third quarter, the 49ers tied the game at 17 on a 41-yard field goal by kicker Robbie Gould.

On the next drive, the Cowboys retook the lead, 24-17, on Dalton’s 12-yard touchdown strike to tight end Dalton Schultz.

Dalton completed 19-of-33 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns. San Francisco sacked Dalton twice (both by defensive tackle Arik Armstead) and held the Cowboys to 291 yards of total offense. Dallas had possessed the football for 25 minutes.

Jeff Wilson’s 1-yard scoring run for San Francisco tied the game at 24 late in the third quarter. It was the fourth touchdown drive of 75 yards.

Mullens had a chance to lead the 49ers to a tie-breaking score, but safety Donovan Wilson’s first career interception thwarted the drive and set up Dallas in great field position. After three straight incomplete passes, Zuerlein drills a 46-yarder to give Dallas a 27-24 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Following cornerback Anthony Brown’s interception, Pollard put the game away with a 40-yard touchdown run that put Dallas up 34-24 late in the fourth quarter.

After the 49ers kicked a field goal on second down to pull within a touchdown with a minute left in the game, CeeDee Lamb recovered the onside kick and raced 47 yards for a touchdown.

Lamb hauled in a team-high 85 yards on five catches over nine targets.

Backup quarterback C.J. Beathard who replaced Mullens following his second interception, handled the final two possessions for the 49ers. Beathard threw a 49-yard Hail Mary touchdown to Kendrick Bourne on the game’s final play.

Bourne finished with four catches for team-high 86 yards and a touchdown.

In a matchup between two franchises that have combined for 10 Super Bowl titles, the Cowboys (5-9) kept their slim playoff hopes alive while the loss all but ends the 49ers’ (5-9) chances at defending their NFC championship. San Francisco will be the second Super Bowl runner-up to miss the playoffs in 13 seasons when the season is over.

“If we don’t take care of our own business, nothing else matters,” Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said. “We’re clearly focused on what’s in front of us. We really want to finish strong with these two division games. That’s clearly my focus.”

Next week, both San Francisco and Dallas face divisional opponents as the 49ers will face off against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium.

The Cowboys will host the Philadelphia Eagles (4-8-1) in Week 16.

Stanford won its home-away-from-home Pac-12 men’s basketball contest 78-75 over Arizona on Saturday. The game was played in Santa Cruz at Kaiser Permanente Arena, the home of the Golden State Warriors’ G-League team – seating capacity of 2,500.

This was the first time a Wildcat team coached by Sean Miller ever lost to Stanford, snapping a 19-game Stanford losing streak to the U of A and a 20-game losing streak overall.

It was the Cardinal’s first win over Arizona since Jan. 4, 2009.

Arizona (5-1) lost despite an outstanding night for Jemarl Baker, who scored 29 points, including 8 of 13 3-pointers – seven of them in the second half.

Stanford (4-2) led 30-23 at halftime while holding the Wildcats to under 30 percent shooting. U of A cut the Cardinal’s lead to 41-40 on a three-point play by Azuolas Tubelis with 13:51 to play in the second half.

But Ziaire Williams with a three-point play and Jordan Brown canned a 3-pointer for Stanford to stop the U of A rally. A Noah Taitz 3-pointer put the Cardinal up 59-53 with eight minutes left.

Arizona pulled to within 68-66 on a 3 by Baker and an Ira Lee basket at the 4-minute mark. The Wildcats took a 69-68 lead on Baker’s sixth 3. Oscar da Silva made a pair of technical free throws after a foul by Christin Koloko.

Arizona regained the lead at 72-70 on Baker’s seventh trey before Spencer Jones hit a pair of 3s that gave Stanford a 76-72 lead. Baker’s eighth 3 made it 76-75.

An offensive foul and two missed free throws by Akinjo over the final seven seconds allowed Stanford to maintain its lead. Da Silva a pair of free throws in the final five seconds.

Da Silva led the Cardinal with 21 points.

The game was played in Santa Cruz due to a Santa Clara County health order prohibiting games or practices at all levels until Monday.

Stanford wins a double-overtime thriller to end the season on a high note 48-47

By Jerry Feitelberg

What a way to finish the season. The Cardinal won a thrilling double-overtime game over the UCLA Bruins t the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The game had loads of offense and the Stanford defense came through to win the game as the Bruins were attempting a two-point conversion that would send the Cardinal down to defeat.

The Stanford Cardinal, playing their fourth game in a row on the road, beat the UCLA Bruins at the Rose Bowl Saturday night 48-47.

The Cardinal finished the season with a record of 4-2. The Bruins fell to 3-4. The Cardinal, eligible to play in a postseason bowl game, announced that they would not accept an invitation. UCLA also declined an invitation for a bowl game.

Stanford dominated the first half. Cardinal quarterback Davis Mills had everything working for him. The Cardinal scored three times to finish the first half with a 20-3 lead. The only blemish was Jet Toner’s missed extra point on the Cardinal’s second score.

The miss turned out to be a significant factor in the game. The Cardinal’s first score was a 72 -yard drive on 12 plays. The key play was a 34-yard pass from Mills to Brycen Tremayne to put the ball on the Bruin nine-yard line. The Cardinal took the ball down to the one-yard line. Austin Jones scored on a one-yard plunge into the end zone. UCLA had a touchdown called back due to a holding penalty. They had to settle for a field goal. Stanford led 7-3.

The Cardinal scored their second touchdown on a six-play 75-yard drive. The key plays were Napoleon Peat’s 19-yard scamper and Mills’ 44-yard throw to Tremayne to take the Cardinal down to the Bruins’ two-yard line.

With the Cardinal in the Wildcat formation, Isiah Sanders took it to the house for the score. Toner missed the extra point. Stanford leads 13-3. UCLA’s quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson was injured while leading the Bruins to Stanford’s 21-yard line. Chase Griffin replaced him.

The Bruin drive stalled at the eleven-yard line.UCLA’s field goal attempt failed. Stanford then went on an 80-yard drive. Mills completed five passes to get the Cardinal down to the Bruin one-yard line.

Jones ran it in for the score. Stanford dominated the first half and left the field, leading 20-3. Mills was 13-for-16, passing good for 201 yards. Jones had 11 carries for 44 yards and two touchdowns. Tremayne had four receptions for 88 yards. Fehoko had five catches for 76 yards.

The Bruins found their mojo in the second half. The Cardinal defense held the Bruin offense in check the first thirty minutes of the game. The Cardinal offense shredded the Bruins defense. However, teams have to play sixty minutes of football.

With backup QB Chase Griffin and backup running back Brittain Brown, the Bruins scored 31 unanswered points to lead 34-20 with 5:39 left. Cardinal QB Davis Mills threw three interceptions that set up the Bruin touchdowns. The Bruins scored a touchdown the first time they had their hands on the ball in the second half. They went 57 yards on seven plays for the score. There was a feeling that momentum had shifted to the Bruins.

Their next score came when Mills’ pass was picked off. Mills had thrown 222 passes without an interception. The Bruins drive stalled on the Cardinal 32-yard line. On fourth and four, Griffin connected with tight end Greg Dulcich for the score.

The Bruins picked off another Mills’ pass at the Bruin 16-yard line. Brown then ripped off a 41-yard run. Griffin connected with Chase Cota in the end zone for the score. UCLA led for the first time 24-20. UCLA continued to rip through the Cardinal defense. They were driving for another score when the Cardinal defense stiffined. The Bruins kicked a field goal to lead 27-20.

The Bruin defense put seven more points on the board when cornerback Jay Shaw intercepted Mills errant throw. He took it to the house to make it 34-20. The Bruins had scored 31 unanswered points in the second half. Time was running out for Stanford.

The Cardinal rose to the occasion. They went on a 75-yard drive to creep within seven 34-27 with 2:39 to play. The Cardinal tried an onside kick. UCLA was able to field it cleanly and ran it back to the Cardinal 27-yard line. Stanford’s defense forced a fumble, and they were back in business with just a minute and 43 seconds left to play.

Could they do it? Did they have enough left in the tank to engineer a drive that would tie the game? They answered both questions. They converted on a fourth and one to stay alive. Davis Mills connected with Fehoko on a 29-yard pass to tie the game and send it to overtime.

It took two overtime periods to end the game. UCLA scored first. Stanford responded to tied it at 41-41. In the second overtime period, Stanford went first. They put seven more points on the board. The combination of Mills to Fehoko worked again.

UCLA had to score to tie the game. They did. The Cardinal defense forced them into a fourth and 18 for a first down. The Bruins needed 21 yards for the score. Griffin found Kyle Phillips in the end zone for the TD. Bruins’ head coach Chip Kelly decided to go for two points.

If they converted, the Bruins would win. If they failed, the day belonged to Stanford. The Bruins ran the play. Stanford held. Penalty flags flew all over the field. Each team was charged with a penalty. They had to rerun the play. The Cardinal defense stopped the run on the one-yard line to seal the win for Stanford. Final score Stanford 48-UCLA 47.

Game notes and stats: Davis Mills had quite a day. He was 32 for 47, good for 428 yards. Austin Jones had 23 carries for 92 yards. Simi Fehoko had a career-high sixteen receptions for 230 yards and three touchdowns. Stanford record 560 total yards on offense. The Bruins had 483. The Bruins’ Brittain Brown rushed for 219 yards.

Both teams left everything on the field Saturday night. Had Kelly decided not to kick the extra point, the teams probably would still be on the field. It was a terrific college football game and a great way to end the season.

Cal Bears men basketball podcast with Michael Duca: Boston trip scratched out of precaution; Home games planned for the 19th and 22

Cal had lots to celebrate on Sun Dec 13th at Haas Pavilion with a three point buzzer beater from Makale Foreman to get a two point 72-70 win over the USF Dons at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley (calbears.com photo)

Cal Bears mens basketball podcast:

#1 The Cal MBB (3-4) trip to Boston College (1-5) has been canceled as a Cal statement said “out of an abundance of caution” neither school has registered any positive test for Covid 19. The game was scheduled for Dec 22 but now Cal will play a home game against Seattle University.

#2 Michael, Cal’s last game still a subject of discussion that incredible upset win over the USF Dons (5-3) I know you had a chance to see it when Makale Foreman took a three point shoot in the closing minute that won it for Cal.

#3 Taking a look at the game against USF did Cal head coach Mark Fox do somethings to tweak the offense and this is a team that didn’t panic but played up to the opponent and pretty much stayed with one of the best college teams.

#4 Cal has got some help from Grant Anticevich (18) and Matt Bradley (17) the Bears will certainly rely on them this season to provide offense and scoring.

#5 Cal has added two home games Dec 19 vs. CSUN and Dec 22 against Seattle University it has to be a relief for all involved that Cal doesn’t have to make that cross country to trip to Boston.
