Sharks Lose 5th in a Row, Fall 5-2 to Canucks

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks lost 5-2 to the Vancouver Canucks Saturday at the SAP Center. This was the first road win for the Canucks in San Jose since March 31, 2016, and it added a fifth to the Sharks’ second four-loss streak of the season. Canucks goals were scored by Brandon Sutter, Elias Pettersson, Jake Virtanen and Adam Gaudette. Vancouver goaltender Thatcher Demko made 24 saves for the win. The Sharks goals were scored by Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Evander Kane. Goaltender Aaron Dell made 23 saves for the Sharks.

After the game, Sharks captain Logan Couture talked about the question of confidence during a losing streak:

For a lot of us, we’ve done some really really good things in this league, we’ve been successful players in this league for a long time. I think we need to get that swagger, that confidence back that we’ve had here for so many years. You know, it’s tough when you’re losing, it is very very difficult to feel confident when you’ve got the puck to make that play when you’ve got the extra second.

Are the Sharks losing patience with each other in the midst of this lousy start? After the game, Sharks defenseman Brenden Dillon warned that that was a danger, but then said: “It’s pretty easy to look at the guy next to you instead of looking at yourself. Again, we’ve got a lot of skill on this team, a lot of talent. Guys that have been here for a long time… know what it takes to win. I think everybody, if we can believe back in that and just get into that we’re going to be okay.”

Vancouver’s Brandon Sutter started the scoring at 4:17 of the first period. Josh Leivo took a shot from above the faceoff circle. Dell stopped that, but came out a ways to do so and then kicked out a rebound. Sutter picked up the rebound and got it in the net before Dell could get back in position. It was Sutter’s fourth of the season.

Elias Pettersson doubled up Vancover’s lead with a goal at 12:46. Brock Boeser’s pass came out to center above the hash marks, where Pettersson was ready for it. Dell and Brendand Dillon did not seem ready for it and Pettersson’s shot went right through them. It was Pettersson’s fifth of the season. Assists went to Boeser and Bo Horvat.

The Sharks’ penalty kill held the Canucks to one shot on their first period power play. Vancouver still outshot the Sharks 14-8.

Jake Virtanen added a third goal for the Canucks, just 45 seconds into the second period. His shot went right into Dell and then over his leg. Dell went down and had the puck in his legs, and the on ice official called it no goal. After an official review, the call was overturned. Assists went to Alexader Edler and Tyler Myers.

At 5:11, Adam Gaudette scored Vancouver’s fourth on a broken tic-tack-toe play that drew Aaron Dell and two defenders to the right side of the net, allowing the puck to get by on the left. The goal came during a delayed penalty against the Sharks. The puck seemed to be on its way to Troy Stecher as he closed on the net behind the mass of bodies to one side. Instead, it went off of one of those bodies and into the net.

The Sharks had two power plays in the second period, and got six shots with the man advantage. the teams were tied for shots in the second period at eight apiece.

At the end of the second, Joe Thorton was called for cross-checking Jay Beagle, putting Vancouver on the power play to start the third period. The Canucks did not get a shot during that power play. The Sharks had their own power play chance at 2:38, in which they got two shots, but no goal.

The Sharks finally got on the board with a short-handed goal from Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Barclay Goodrow. They broke away and were able to go in two-on-one and score at 10:51.

The Canucks power play turned into a two-man advantage not long after that, when Joe Thornton was boxed for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Sharks survived that, but after the first penalty expired, they gave up a fifth goal. It was Pettersson’s second of the night, with an assist to JT Miller.

Evander Kane added the Sharks’ second goal with just 22 seconds left in regulation. He skated into the zone with Tomas Hertl and went around the Canucks defense to shoot. His first shot came back as a rebound, but he picked it up and put it away. Assists went to Kevin Labanc and Erik Karlsson.

The Sharks next play on Tuesday against the Chicago Blackhawks at 7:00 PM PT in San Jose.

Lukas Radil was in Saturday, with Jonny Brodzinsky back out of the lineup.

NHL podcast with Matt Harrington: Canucks snap win streak at 5; Isles streak grows to 8; Flyers win in close game 4-3; plus more

#1 The Vancouver Canucks, who face the San Jose Sharks tonight at SAP Center, had won five straight, but snapped their streak by a goal 2-1 to the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night. The Sharks, on the other hand, are a struggling bunch who have four straight, but are back on home ice. Matt tells us how he sees this matchup.

#2 Speaking of streaks, the New York Islanders topped the Tampa Bay Lightning for the Isles’ eighth straight win 5-3. The Isles got goals from Matthew Barzal (6), Ryan Pulock (2), Josh Baily (5), Anders Lee (5), Derrick Brassard (4).

#3 The Philadelphia Flyers got by the New Jersey Devils 4-3. The Flyers got scoring from Oskar Lindblom (7), Sean Couturier (3), Joel Farabee (11). Flyers won in a shootout.

#4 The Washington Caps won by a convincing five goals 6-1. The Caps scored four times in the first period against the Buffalo Sabres in a period that pretty much established the game. The Caps’ Jakub Vrana scored twice in the first period.

#5 The Carolina Hurricanes got four goals in the second period that pretty much put a lock on the Detroit Red Wings with a 7-3 win. In that second period, the Canes got goals from Sebastian Aho, who scored twice; Nino Niederreiter; and Martin Necas.

Heat comeback to upend Barracuda 3-2 in shootout victory

The San Jose Barracuda weren’t able to hold on to a one-goal lead in the third period and it ended up burning them as the Stockton Heat rallied with a late third period power play goal that led to a 3-2 shootout victory on Friday evening at Stockton Arena.

It only took 48 seconds for San Jose (4-4-0-0) to draw first blood. Alex True won a battle along the boards and sent a pass behind the net over to Evan Weinger. Weinger than skated out to the right slot and slid a pass over to an incoming Jayden Halbgewachs, who fired a shot top-shelf over the shoulder of Heat goalie Jon Gillies for his second goal of the season. It was the quickest goal the ‘Cuda have score to begin a game.

Stockton (7-1-0-1) scored the equalizer midway through the first period on the power play when Matthew Phillips entered San Jose zone down the right boards. He fed a pass over to Heat captain Byron Froese, who quickly whipped a wrist shot into the back of the net, that surprised Cuda goalie Joesef Kornear, for his fifth goal of the season at the 10:20 mark.

Forese’s goal ended a steak over 170 consecutive minutes for Korenar without allowing goal.

San Jose regained the lead in the second period on the power play. Weinger shot the puck from the left faceoff circle that Gillies kicked over to the right side where Maxim Letunov was at the right place at the right time. Letunov pounced on the loose puck and hammered it home for his third goal of the season at the 12:58 mark. All three of Letunov’s goals have come on the power play, which leads the team.

The Heat wouldn’t go down quietly in the third period. They forced the extra session with their second power play goal of the game. Justin Kirkland skated in from the left shot with a shot that Korenar was able to get a pad on. However, he wasn’t able to freeze the puck as it jumped on to the stick of Ryan Lomberg, who backhanded the puck past Korenar for his fifth goal of the season at the 15:18 mark.

It was a special teams battle and they won that one,” said Cuda head coach Roy Sommer. “We take kind of a bad penalty there with five minutes to go. They (Stockton) have always had a good PP against us. That was the eventual dagger through the heart so-to-speak.”

Neither team generated a good scoring chance in the overtime period with only three shots combined by both teams. In the shootout, all three of Stockton’s shooters scored with Glenn Gawdin credited with the shootout winner.

Gillies finished 30 saves on 32 shots to earn the victory. Korenar made 28 saves on 30 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 1/8 on the power play. Stockton finished 2/5.

#4 Mary Lisa, talk about the Sharks offense. Just not enough to catch the Jets the Sharks got goals from Evander Kane and Tomas Hertl, but the effort fell short.

#5 The Sharks play the second of back to back games tonight at SAP Center against the Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks had won five straight until they ran into the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night and lost by a goal 2-1. Mary Lisa tells us how she sees this match.

The night when Stephen Curry broke his left hand, most local television stations broke that news at the top of the hour and then in the second block of their newscasts right after the fires in the Bay Area and in Southern California,they went into detail and then teased their sports segment that was coming later.

Warriors fans who have been treated to three NBA titles in recent years,were shocked,that the team will have to play without Curry (at least 45 games)-that’s over half of the 82 game NBA season. After the 45 games Curry will be re-evaluated to see if his is ready to play again. In the euphoria of Warriors Nation the past few years where they are expected to win all the time,it was inconceivable their team with no Curry.

It was a shock. We must never forget,these athletes are made of bone and flesh,and at anytime they could get hurt. Not only while playing, but driving or at home and in many ways other than going to the hoop to score a basket.

So now what? This Warriors team has a lot of young players,looking to become stars in the league. One of the veterans, Draymond Green,who is playing in his eight season with the Warriors, said the obvious “The Warriors are a lot different without Curry” But Draymond now has to tend to himself as he suffered a sprained left index finger during Friday’s lost to the San Antonio Spurs. His availability for tonight’s game against Charlotte is in question.

Even before the Curry injury nobody should expected this Warriors team to be among the elite teams in the league,but now things look very much different and looks like the W’s will be looking to save the season. The opportunity for the younger players is there and coach Kerr knows it.

This is when a good coach can help a team that needs some leadership and direction. It is easier for a coach to win when you have the talent and nobody wins without talent. The best jockey in the world cannot win the race,if the horse is limping.

The famous rapper LL Cool J once said “When adversity strikes,that’s when you have to be the most calm. Take a step back,stay strong,stay grounded and press on”. Those are simple, but wise words,as the Warriors are facing all that and more early during this season.

Oakland Raiders podcast with Joe Hawkes Beamon: Raiders can really depend on O-line to protect Carr

#1 The Oakland Raiders (3-4) have improved as the O-line had furnished good protection for quarterback Derek Carr. This year, Carr has been sacked eight times compared to 51 times last season.

#2 Last season after a game against the 49ers, Carr said the sacks were having an effect on him physically and mentally, but right now, he’s feeling great.

#3 Carr said he feels a difference this year. He says he feels fresh even after all the game they played and finishing up a long road trip in the last six weeks.

#4 Richie Incognito will start at center for the Raiders (3-4) as starting and backup centers Rodney Hudson and Andre James are out with ankle injuries.

#5 The Raiders host the Detroit Lions (3-3) this Sunday. The Raiders, who lost to Green Bay during the road trip, will face a team that nearly beat Green Bay in the Lions. Joe Hawkes sets this matchup for us at the Oakland Coliseum on Sunday.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Lami: For Halloween, 49ers scare Cardinals to stay perfecto

#1 San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is working that magic again. He had command of his passes and was able to be mobile and get his passes where he wanted them to.

#2 The 49ers were able to hold onto the lead, despite the Arizona Cardinal trying to play catch up in the second half.

#3 Evidence that Garoppolo had time to throw was by his numbers going 28-37 for 317 yards and a passer rating of 136.9.

#4 The key play for the Cardinals in the second half was when quarterback Kyler Murray threw an 88-yard touchdown to receiver Andy Isabella. Also, Murray threw for 241 yards going 17-24 and nearly caught up with the 49ers.

#5 The 49ers head to home to host the Seattle Seahawks for Monday Night Football on ESPN at Levi’s Stadium. How do you size this one up?

#1 The Stanford Cardinal (4-4) got a very needed victory over the Arizona Wildcats (4-4) last Saturday 41-31 and they chalked up their third win in four games. Coach David Shaw has to like the direction the club is taking?

#2 The Cardinal have won three of their last four games. The win over the Wildcats is good for the emotion going into the Cardinal’s next game in Colorado.

#3 After missing three weeks, Stanford quarterback KJ Costello was back in the line up and threw 30 for 43 for 312 yards and three touchdowns. Looks like the O-line provided him some time to throw the football.

#4  Cardinal receiver Simi Fehoko had three receptions for 97 yards and two touchdowns. The running game was in full effect for the Cardinal as they accrued over 150 yards on the ground.

#5 The Colorado Buffaloes (3-5) have had some setbacks this year and they are looking for some offense, but it will be on both sides of the ball they’ll be concerned with. On the other hand, the Cardinal come in after that win against Arizona with some confidence as this game is Boulder.

#1 Tony, the World Series is over. The Washington Nationals looked like they were really going to make this one look easy, but the Houston Astros got hot and won three straight before the Nats forced a Game 7 and Nationals took game 7. It was the most wins by a visiting team in series history. Both teams played an entertaining series.

#2 The San Francisco 49ers play in Arizona for Thursday Night Football. Taking a look at the quarterbacks — for the Cardinals, Kyler Murray, and for the 49ers, Jimmy Garoppolo. Tony explains how he sees this matchup.

#3 After the Warriors played the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Warriors were behind 70-37 at halftime and eventually lost the game, the Warriors’ Draymond Green said the team sucked and then the Warriors went to New Orleans and won. It didn’t last long as the Phoenix Suns took it to the Warriors at Chase Center and lost Stephen Curry to a broken hand?

#4 In a free agent deal, the Oakland Raiders signed linebacker Brandon Marshall, who formerly played for the Denver Broncos. Marshall signed a one-year deal. Tony tells us how the Marshall signing will help out especially considering the season suspension hole that was created by linebacker Vontaze Burfict.

#5 The Sacramento Kings, who played the Charlotte Hornets and lost remain winless, came off a tough loss to the Denver Nuggets on Monday night. The Kings, who had home floor advantage on Wednesday night, are looking for that slight edge to get into the win column.
