Warriors Come Up Short Against Dallas 119-109

By Barbara Mason

Tuesday evening the Golden State Warriors (3-1) took on the Dallas Mavericks (1-3) at American Airlines Center. This is a tale of two teams. The Mavericks had faced a must win situation not having won a single game in this series.

There was no room for error for Dallas: it was win big or go home. Golden State had a completely different scenario. They needed to win one more game to move onto the NBA Finals. Golden State had everything going for them going into game 4 but it was not to be for the Warriors losing game 4 119-109.

Game 4 recap: In the first quarter, Dallas had a much different start then they did in Game Three. They were aggressive, disciplined and accurate. As the first 12 minutes expired Dallas held a 28-24 lead. The long ball was right on point for the Mavericks.

Dallas would pour it on in the second quarter. They were piling up three’s and had extended their lead 56-42 with three minutes left in the first half. It was the kind of game that we fully expected to see from Dallas. This was not a team that would roll over. The Mavs led at the half 52-47.

In a crazy turn the third quarter was delayed when American Airlines Center popped a leak. Dallas was experiencing a severe thunder storm and there were a number of leaks some of which found their way onto the court.

When the third quarter finally got underway it continued to rain on the court, raining three’s for Dallas that is. The Mavericks could not miss in the paint or beyond the arc as they continued to build their lead.

The only Warrior with double digits mid-way through the third quarter was Stephen Curry in a real lackluster game for Golden State. It was so lopsided that it was almost shocking when the Mavericks actually missed a shot. They had 19 three’s in the game so far and only five turnovers leading 99-70.

There was a real shift in the fourth quarter for the Warriors. The Mavericks began to miss shots and the Warriors had cut a 29 point Maverick lead to 16 with six minutes left in the game.

The Warriors continued to push trailing by ten points with 1:45 left in the game 115-105. The Warriors had made an amazing run in the fourth quarter of this game losing. It was just too little too late for Golden State.

Curry finished the game with 20 points and the bench was great with Moses Moody, Jordan Poole and Jonathan Kuminga all shooting in double digits. The Warriors came up just short in this game. They stumbled in the second and third quarters and that proved to be irreparable for the team.

The Mavericks had pushed a Game Five this Thursday at Chase Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: The Oakland to Las Vegas Shuttle

The Oakland To Las Vegas Shuttle

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

OAKLAND–Dave Kaval, President of the Oakland A’s was in Las Vegas last week for meeting with area landowners. The A’s down to two possible locations, and Kaval said the hopes of announcing a final site soon.

Steve Hill, CEO and President of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority said that although a room tax is off the table, there are other means that could benefit the A’s if the team relocates to Las Vegas. Public assistance could be made available to help lure the team to Sin City.

Mr.Kaval has been made aware as he met with Mr.Hill, but the A’s, they do not want to negotiate in public.   Earlier this month, the A’s had a list of five possible ballpark sites, so the elimination of three indicates the process could wrap up soon.

What’s new for Las Vegas -The possibility of public assistance made available is important since throughout the year most state and local politicians seem to oppose using public money to help fund the A’s ballpark. But know, a change of strategy.

On deck- June 30 a key vote by the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission which would allow the project to proceed. If this vote doesn’t get the approval, Oakland is basically out of gas. If it gets a positive vote, the next step is for the city of Oakland to come to terms with the Oakland A’s on a development agreement.

How about the lawsuits?  On April 4, 2022. Three separate lawsuits were filed in Alameda County Superior Court by Union Pacific Railroad, The Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority and a coalition that includes the East Oakland Stadium Alliance, Pacific Merchant Shipping Association, Harbor Trucking Association, California Trucking Association, metal-shredding company Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc., and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union.  The City of Oakland and the Oakland A’s are listed as defendants.

California State law: Under AB 734 which was authored by former Assemblyman Rob Bonta, who is now the state attorney general, any lawsuits challenging the environmental impact report would have to be decided within 270 days of the report getting approved.

That puts the court process on a timeline of nine months from now, or January 2023.

Meanwhile, the Oakland to Las Vegas Shuttle continues…

Headline Sports podcast with Tony Renteria: NBA Playoffs-Warriors can finish off Mavericks tonight in Dallas; Celtics and Heat head to Miami tied 2-2

In second half action from Sun May 22, 2022 the Golden State Warriors Andrew Wiggins (22) throws down on the Dallas Mavericks Luka Doncic (11) in game 3 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas the two teams match up for game 4 tonight in Dallas (AP News photo)

On Headline Sports with Tony R:

#1 Golden State Warriors who lead the Western Conference playoffs by a commanding 3-0 lead head into game four tonight in Dallas there seems to be a confidence that the Warriors will finish off the Dallas Mavericks tonight but over confidence could be a dangerous thing.

#2 As in past post season games the Warriors relied on Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green but they’ve been getting strong support from players like Andrew Wiggins, Jordan Poole and Otto Porter Jr.

#3 Turning to the NBA Eastern Conference Playoffs the Boston Celtics who were down 2-1 came back on Monday night and evened up the series against the Miami Heat with a 102-82 win.

#4 It was a lopsided game 4 of sorts as the Celtics commanded a 29-11 lead after the first quarter and took a 57-33 lead into half time. The Heat came out with a 49-45 second half effort but just came up 20 points short none the less.

#5 It’s back to Miami on Wednesday night for game 5 and it’s been a series that’s been that kind of a series that’s been back and forth the Celtics were able to keep the Heat’s Jimmy Butler down to just six points in game 4 but in Miami Butler has lead Miami in scoring consistently it could be a series changer Wednesday night.

Three long balls propel Mariners to a 7-6 win over A’s to open series in Seattle

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Seattle Mariners welcomed the Oakland A’s to T-Mobile Park Monday night for three games. The Mariners dominated Oakland last year as they won 15 of the 19 games. Seattle continued their dominance as they won their 13th consecutive game over the A’s 7-6.

The Mariners used the long ball to earn the victory. A’s starter, lefty Zach Logue, gave up three big flys to the M’s. Seattle’s centerfielder, Julio Rodriguez, blasted a three-run shot in the bottom of the third to give the M’s an early 3-0 advantage.

The A’s rallied to tie the game in the top of the fourth. Chad Pinder hit a solo homer to make it 3-1. With one out, catcher Sean Murphy doubled. First baseman Christian Bethancourt singled to send Murphy to third.

Kevin Smith followed with a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Murphy with the A’s second run. Bethancourt advanced to third when Elvis Andrus singled. Tony Kemp followed with a single to drive in Bethancourt with the inning’s third run.

The tie didn’t last long as Seattle put two more on the board in their half of the fourth. With one out, A’s starter Zach Logue walked Luis Torrens. Logue then served up a gopher ball to the M’s catcher Cal Raleigh to make it a 5-3 game.

The Mariners increased the lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Again, with one out, Logue walked Julio Rodriguez. The next hitter, Eugenio Suarez, took Logue deep. A’s manager removed Logue from the game. Domingo Acevedo came in from the bullpen and retired the next two hitters.

The A’s sent nine men to the plate in the top of the sixth. The A’s had four hits in the frame, and three men scored. The big hit was a double off the bat of rookie Cristian Pache. The A’s trail 7-6.

There was no more scoring in the game. The A’s relievers, A.J.Puk, Lou Trivino, and Sam Moll, kept the M’s bats quiet. The M’s bullpen did their job, too. The A’s bats went to sleep after the sixth as they wound up losing 7-6 to Seattle.

Game Notes: With the loss, the A’s are now 17-27, ten games under .500. The Mariners improved to 18-25.

The A’s have now lost 13 consecutive games to the Mariners. They hope to get back on the winning track Tuesday night.

The time of the game was 3:24. There were 14, 415 fans in the park to watch the M’s take down the A’s. Starting pitchers on Tuesday night at T Mobile Field in Seattle for the A’s James Kaprielian (0-2 ERA 4.50) and for the Seattle Mariners George Kirby (0-1, 3.60) a 6:40 pm PDT first pitch.

Baseball: Do you enjoy Position players Pitching?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Today it has become more common to see a position player pitching at the end of a game with a lopsided score. Because it is now more common and it has lost a lot of the “fun” that it used to be. And the more it happens in the future, the more it would mean “not much”.

Unless those are Hall of Fame players, such guys as Albert Pujols and his good friend Yadier Molina, both in St Louis, they are first vote Hall of Famers in the future and those are guys that have done everything in baseball, except pitch, until recently.

During the Phillies 2018 Spring Training, manager Gabe Kapler experimented with his utility players throw occasional bullpen sessions. The purpose of this was to use them in game situations. It was not meant to be as a “joke” or fun if your team was winning or losing by 15 runs in the ninth inning. Kapler’s experiment was just that, an experiment.

Gabe Kapler, (now managing the Giants) used outfielder Luis González to pitch against the San Diego Padres on Sunday at Oracle Park, when the game was 10-1 in favor of the Padres, who swept the Giants. González did a great job as he pitched for 2 innings gave up 1 hit and no runs, his ERA 0.00

The first 40-40 man in history, José Canseco came to pitch for the Texas Rangers against the Boston Red Sox on May 29, 1993. He pitched one inning (the 8th) gave up 2 hits 3 earned runs, walked three and his earned run average ended at 27.00.

Canseco injured his arm and underwent Tommy John surgery to end his season. José had said in the past his dream was to pitch during a major league game. Was that fun José? By-the way, just three days prior to his pitching debut and retirement, on May 26, his head produced a home run, as he was playing right field when a batted ball hit his head and went over the fence.

That also was not a lot of fun for José, but he took it in stride after all there is no Tommy John surgery for your head. José Canseco played for another 10 years and retired after the 2001 season. He played for 17 years in the major leagues as an Outfielder-Designated Hitter and…Pitcher.

In conclusion. Using a position player to pitch, in any situation is like ordering Babe Ruth to lay a bunt. However, Ruth had a sacrifice bunt every year between 1915 and 1930. From 1922 to 1930 The Bambino hit 403 homeruns and also laid down 33 sacrifice bunts.

However, Ruth also won 65 games as a pitcher. In my book, I like to see a super star like Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina to pitch in a game that is already decided, but I will not enjoy an average player taking the ball, unless his team has totally ran out of pitchers.

But that is only my opinion, I am sure many would disagree. One thing we could all agree is that today, their is only one Shohei “Showtime”) Ohtani, he can really hit and really pitch, with the best of them.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Morris Phillips: Giants can’t stop Padres Machado; SF’s Gonzalez comes in from leftfield to relieve; Giants meet the Mets tonight at Oracle

The San Diego Padres Manny Machado (left) greets Jake Cronenworth (right) after scoring on the San Francisco Giants in the top of the fourth inning at Oracle Park in San Francisco (AP News photo)

On the SF Giants podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris, the San Diego Padres (22-14) Manny Machado was being Manny again three doubles and a triple he had an MVP type game lending to the Padres 10-1 laugher and series sweep on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants (22-18).

#2 For Machado it was a career high and tied the Padres all time record for extra base hits in a ball game Machado also picked up two RBIs. Becoming the eighth Padre to accomplish four extra base hits in a game.

#3 The Padres improve their record to four games over .500 and Machado said after the game that San Diego is a good ball club and said that if things continue this way things will fall into place.

#4 The Giants brought in relief pitcher Luis Gonzalez who had been playing in rightfield. Gonzalez who pitched against the Padres in the top of the seventh got the side in order and came out again in the top of the eight giving up a hit but again got out of the inning unscathed after two a 80 plus MPH change up and mostly 48 MPH lob balls that kept the hitters off balance.

#5 The New York Mets (28-15) who are one of baseball’s hottest teams come to Oracle Park to open a three game series with the Giants on Monday night. Starting pitcher for the Mets lefthander David Peterson (1-0, 1.89) Peterson will be opposed by Giant starter Alex Cobb (3-1, 5.61) a 6:45 pm PDT first pitch.

Golden State Warriors podcast with Barbara Mason: NBA fines Mavericks $100,000 for bench violations; Warriors on the brink of eliminating Mavericks

Here the Dallas Mavericks bench chose to stand for much of game 2 in this Fri May 20, 2022 photo at Chase Center in San Francisco where they were fined for bench violations in games 1, 2, and 3 as if they didn’t have enough problems trying to win a game against the Golden State Warriors in the current third round NBA Western Conference Finals (AP News photo)

On the Warrior podcast with Barbara:

#1 If problems haven’t compounded for the Dallas Mavericks who are now on the brink of elimination down 3-0 to the Golden State Warriors after a game 3 loss on Sunday night the Mavericks were fined by the NBA $100,000 for a third bench violation. Dallas players were either standing too long or coming onto or near the court. Fines doubled each time starting at $25,000, $50,000 and now $100,000 after Sunday’s game.

#2 Barbara, knowing how Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is animated, vocal and involved on the sidelines of his team is he the type of owner that will roll heads if the Mavericks were to get swept in this series?

#3 There was no stopping the Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry who scored 31 points and Andrew Wiggins who had 27 points that pretty much froze out the Mavericks in the second half of the game.

#4 For the Mavericks Luka Doncic he had to carry most of the weight scoring a team leading 41 points while teammate Spencer Dinwiddie was a distant second in scoring with 26 points.

#5 It’s either win big or go home for the Mavericks in game 4 on Tuesday night as Dallas has their last chance to defeat Golden State on their home floor. Meanwhile the Warriors have lots of confidence entering what could be the final game of this third round of playoffs.

Earthquakes battle Sporting KC to a 1-1 draw

The San Jose Earthquakes celebrate Jackson Yueill’s equalizer goal to start the second half in their 1-1 draw with Sporting Kansas City at Pay Pal Park on Sun May 22, 2022 (VCP Soccer photo).

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Earthquakes outplayed Sporting Kansas City for 90 minutes but had to settle for one point in a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at Pay Pal Park.

San Jose is unbeaten in four straight matches and are now 6-1-2 since interim head coach Alex Covelo took over the reigns of the team. Sporting KC is 1-4-4 in their past nine matches.

San Jose (3-5-5) dominated the first half as they controlled the possession and had the majority of the scoring chances including a three-minute from the 40th-43rd minutes where they created three good scoring chances only to have Sporting KC goalkeeper Tim Melia keep the ball out of the net.

“I think in the first half, we didn’t occupy the right spaces to advance. We were trying to find Jamiro [Monteiro] and Jackson [Yueill]. We didn’t need them falling back as we saw. We knew we needed to fix something in the second half,” Covelo said.

Melia had four saves in the opening 45 minutes.

Despite being outplayed in the first half, Sporting KC (3-7-4) ended drawing first blood in the 45th minute when Cam Duke outwaited Quakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski on the left side of the box before centering the ball to Johnny Russell. The veteran striker tapped home the ball into an empty net for his co-team leading fourth goal of the season.

It didn’t take long for San Jose to answer back to start the second half. In the 46th minute, Jamiro Monteiro sent a cross into the box to an unmarked Jackson Yueill. The Quakes captain headed the ball past a diving Melia for his third goal of the season.

“In the second half, Jackson was tired and felt something in his leg, so we tried to put [Jan] Gregus and Chofis to find more in between lines and create more chances because we were very low. That’s why we made those substitutions,” said Covelo.

The Quakes had Sporting KC back on their heels in the last 10 minutes of the match but weren’t able to earn three point and instead had to settle for one against a team that wasn’t aggressive in the second half.

Oscar Agren made his debut in a Quakes uniform as he started at right center back for Covelo and played all 90 minutes of the match. Chofis, who came in as a substitute in the 68th minute for Monteiro, played in his first match since missing the past nine due to an upper thigh injury.

“It felt good to be out there and get the debut,” said Agren. “I’m very appreciative for that. The game was pretty calm, I thought overall.”

Marcinkowski finished the match with one save on two shots on target. Malia made four saves on five shots.

GAME NOTES: Each team finished the match with four corner kicks.

San Jose is now 25-28-10 all-time vs. Sporting KC in MLS play, including a 17-7-8 record at home.

Sporting Kansas City has lost only one of its last 12 matches against San Jose (W7 D4, including a penalty shootout win). Sporting has won three of its last six visits to San Jose after going winless in 18 straight matches at the Earthquakes from 2001 to April 2016 (D5 L13, incl. playoffs).

San Jose had its three consecutive home matches winning streak snapped. Going back to last season, San Jose has lost only one of its last 11 home league games (W4 D6), a 3-1 defeat to the Red Bulls on the opening day of this season.

Dániel Sallói scored both goals for SKC in their Wednesday win and also received one of their red cards, after being sent off in the waning moments of the match. Sallói is the fifth player in MLS history to notch a brace and be sent off in the same match, joining Ted Chronopoulos, Taylor Twellman, Obafemi Martins and Ola Kamara.

UP NEXT: San Jose travels down to SoCal to take on LAFC on Saturday 5/28 at 3:00pm at Banc of California Stadium.

Warriors Take A Commanding Series Lead 3-0

By Barbara Mason

The Golden State Warriors (3-0) traveled to Dallas to take on the Mavericks (0-3) in Game Three of the Western Conference Finals on Sunday. The Warriors came out of it with a 109-100 win in Dallas to move up in the series 3-0 and are on the brink of sweeping the series.

The Warriors came out in the first quarter with great energy jumping to a 14-7 lead early. They went on a 10-0 run in the first quarter before Dallas really got going.

Luka Doncic would finish the quarter with a 32-foot three pointer. After the first 12 minutes the Warriors held a slim 25-22 lead. The Mavericks had really heated up as the clock ran out on the first quarter.

The Maverick’s took a lead early in the second quarter. Both teams were struggling from downtown shooting at 22%. Dallas would jump to a nine point lead in the second but Golden State would fight back to take a 48-47 lead into the locker room.

The Warriors would lose Otto Porter Jr. in the quarter who went to the locker room for x-rays on his left foot. This was a significant loss for the Warriors. Porter has been an essential part of Golden State’s success in the past two games offensively and defensively. He was unable to return to the game.

The Warriors began to have turnover issues and coupled with struggles shooting in the second quarter they could not get away with poor ball control going forward.

The Warriors extended their lead in the third quarter leading after three 78-68. Golden State had outscored Dallas 30-21 in the quarter. It would all come down to the fourth quarter for the Warriors. Ball control and execution would decide this game.

The Warriors took a 14 point lead in the fourth quarter. The Mavericks continued to fight trimming the lead to eight but Golden State relentlessly pushed back. Jordan Poole made two crucial long shots to ice this game.

Dallas had trouble shooting the ball in the final quarter and desperately needed stops which just didn’t happen. Golden State had taken a commanding 3-0 lead in the series winning.

Stephen Curry finished with 31 points. Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson rounded out the top numbers, Wiggins with 27 and Thompson with 19.

The two long balls in the final minutes from Poole made all the difference. This was an amazing team effort. Offensive rebounding was just one more plus for Golden State. Kevon Looney finished with 12 rebounds and Wiggins with 11.

The Warriors will play game four on Tuesday night looking to finish off Dallas in game four.. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
