SAN FRANCISCO–This Friday evening, a day after releasing their veteran southpaw closer, Jake McGee, the Giants sent Alex Wood, a veteran left handed starter, to the mound against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers, who, the night before, had foiled the Giants’ chances for a come from behind victory when their bullpen failed to contain a 10th inning Milwaukee offensive surge. This time the Giants played come back kid with a bottom of the ninth Brewer 5-4 lead and the bases loaded Mike Yastrzemski had something to say about it with a grand slam game winning home run to help defeat the Brew Crew 8-5.

Wood is a sinker, slider, change of pace artist whose effectiveness rises and falls noticeably as the game progresses. Before today, his opponents’ 2022 batting average oscillated between .259 with an OPS of .683 in their first at bat; 23 and .619 in the second; and, in the third, a hefty .357, 9.43.

I certainly don’t want to question the widom’s of McGee’s release, and now’s not the time to examine how much of Thursday’s defeat, or even the orange and black’s inability to stifle the Brew Crew’s offense, was the fault of Camilo Doval, who took the loss for the home team.

After all, it was a meek single on a swinging bunt that did him and the Giants in. That’s one reason why we should take the expected ERA statistic, in which a low average exit velocity improves a pitcher’s rating, with a grain of salt.

The concern is that the Giants’ bullpen is not as reliable as it was last year and that the team as a whole suffers from the lament that Bette Davis sang in “Thank Your Lucky Stars,” “They’re Either Too Young or Too Old,” available on the device of your choosing at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_Oj52gaiBM.

The Brewers entered the game at 50-40, putting them at the top of the National League Central Division, a game and a half in front of the St. Louis Cardinals, who, in turn, were a game ahead of the 45-43 Giants for the last wild card berth.

In tonight’s thrilling 8-5 Giants win, Woodruff went 5-2/3 frames, leaving with a 5-2 lead and. a runner on first. Milwaukee’s starter allowed two runs, both earned, on five hits, five walks, and a hit batter. He threw 112 pitchers, 65 considered strikes. All he got for. it was a no decision and an improved ERA of 3.93.

For his part, Wood lasted 4-2/3 innings, during which he threw 84 pitches, 56 counting as strikes. He allowed three runs, all posthumous and none earned, on four hits and no walks over 4-2/3 innings, striking out seven. For this he, too, got a no decision and a slight reduction of his ERA, 4.20.

The Giants drew first blood in their half of the second frame. With two out and David Villar, who had been hit by a pitch, on first. Joey Bart, who seems to be finding his swing after returning from Sacramento, knocked a solid single to left.

LaMonte Wade, Jr., followed by hammering a 95mph four seamer against the home run leader sign just to the right of the 415 foot sign in right center field, sending the hosts up, 2-0.

Milwaukee benefited from some inadequate Giant infield work in the top of the fifth to take the lead. After Wood had fanned Luis Urías and Pedro Severino, Kolten Wong hit a grounder to the left of Villar, that skipped just under the third basemańs glove. Jonathan Davis followed with another grounder to third.

This one bounced off the bag, and Davis just barely beat Vilar´s throw to first. ChristianYelllich hit what could have been an inning ending bounder to Wade at first, but the ball bounded off his glove for an error that scored Wong and sent Davis around to third. That ended Wood´s night.

Tyler Rogers came on to walk Willy Adames on a full count, Andrew McCutchen doubled to left, Rogers hit Rowdy Telle hitting for Mike Brouseeau, with a pitch, Hunter Renfoe beat out a roller to the mound, Urías walked, and, by the time Severino popped out to Bart, San Francisco was trailing, 5-2.

Maurcio Llovera, who came on in the sixth also suffered from Defective Infield Syndrome. Wong led off with a pop up near second base that the ill fated Villar, playing the shift, led clang off his glove for an error. But, in spite of a free pass to Yellich, he escaped the frame unscored upon

Once Woodruff had reached a pitch count of 112 with two down in the bottom of the sixth, Hoby Milner relieved him, getting Wade out on a dying fly that Wong made a fine diving grab of at second. He stayed in the game to set the Giants down in order in the seventh before yielding to Jandel Gustave in the eighth.

Llovera was forced to leave the game with an unspecified injury after retiring Renfoe for the second out in the top of the seventh. From the look of things, my guess is that it was a bister. Llovera was relieved by Yunior Marte, who ended the frame by getting Urías to fly out to center.

Marte hung around through a scoreless eighth, although he did clog the basebaths with a hit batter and two walks. Sam Long pitched the ninth and made short work of the Brewers, setting them down with only a 3-2 walk to sully an otherwise perfect inning.

Josh Hader threw the ninth for the Brewers. Joey Bart, still finding his swing greeted him by blasting his first offering 386 feet into the left field bleachers. It was the Giants’ catcher’s sixth homer and 11th RBI of the year an;d closed the gap to 5-3.

After Wade flew out to right center, Darin Ruf, who had entered the game to pinch hit for Pederson in seventh narrowed the game even further with a 429 foot solo shot to left center. Slater singled to right and almost got picked off first but instead kept running towards second and stole the bag.

Yermín Mercedes, hitting for Belt. got a painful trip to first when Hader plunked him. Then Estrada loaded the bases with at Texas League single to right, bringing Yastrzemski to bat with the game on the line.

On Hader’s first pitch, Yaz blasted a 96mph sinker 420 feet into the center field night for a grand slam walk off and a Giant win.

The win. went to Long, his first against two losses. His ERA now is 3.00.

Hader (0-4,50) was charged with loss and his second blown save of the year.

We’ll see if the Giants can continue their bounce back tomorrow, when they’ll send Alex Cobb (3-4, 4.57) against Milwaiukee’s Eric Lauer (6-3, 3.83). Game time is 4:15.

A’s Beat Astros 5-1; Oakland takes first game of series in Houston

By Barbara Mason

Friday night the Oakland A’s (31-60) took on the Houston Astros (58-31) in Game One of their three game series. Cole Irvin took the mound for Oakland and would be facing one of the toughest lineups in baseball.

Houston would be first up on the board in the fifth inning when Chas McCormick scored off a Jose Siri sacrifice for the early 1-0 lead. That would be the first and last score for Houston.

The A’s got going in the seventh inning scoring three times and never looking back. Seth Brown and Chad Pinder both scored when Elvis Andrus singled to right center. A Skye Bolt single brought Andrus home and the A’s had taken a 3-1 lead.

Bolt was not finished and in the ninth inning he hit one out of the park and with Tony Kemp on base Oakland took a 5-1 lead which would prove to be the final.

It was a great outing for Cole Irvin who went six linnings. He had four strikeouts, three hits and one run. Lou Trivino would close out the game and the A’s had beaten one of the best teams in MLB.

The Astros had trouble getting much offense in this game. They were missing Yordon Alvarez, Michael Brantley and Jose Altuve which was a big loss for the team.

Oakland will take on the Astros in game two Saturday. Jared Koenig (1-2) will take the mound for Oakland with a 6.38 ERA. Justin Verlander will get the nod for Houston with a terrific 11-3 win loss record and a 2.00 ERA. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM PT.

Oakland A’s pitcher Frankie Montas has been giving it his all including in this game on Thu Jun 23, 2022 at the Oakland Coliseum against the Seattle Mariners. Montas is doubtful for the Houston Astros series starting Fri Jul 15, 2022 at Minute Maid Field (AP News photo)

On the A’s podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 Oakland A’s pitcher Frankie Montas is still questionable for this weekend’s series against the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Field in Houston due to his right shoulder inflammation. Montas has thrown in a 25 pitch bullpen session on Tuesday.

#2 Montas left the roation on Jul 3 after pitching just one inning at Seattle feeling the shoulder tightness so as you can see it’s been a long recovery.

#4 A’s infielder Dennis Garcia 24, made his MLB debut on Tuesday against the Texas Rangers in Arlington going 1-2 with a run scored, a hit, and an RBI. The A’s really need his bat to help out with some of the lack of hitting they just haven’t been getting.

#5 A’s starting pitcher for tonight’s game in Houston the A’s will start Cole Irvin (3-7, 3.32) he’ll be opposed against the Astros Jake Odorizzi (4-2, 3.38) a 5:10 pm first pitch.

Preview: Oakland A’s-Houston Astros open series Friday night at Minute Maid Field; Last series before All Star break

Oakland A’s manager Mark Kotsay is hoping for a good road trip starting Fri Jul 15, 2022 at Minute Field in Houston against the Houston Astros (San Francisco Chronicle file photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Oakland A’s meet the Houston Astros for three games starting Friday night at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The A’s and Astros just concluded a three-game series last week in Oakland. The Astros won two out of three in that series.

The A’s are off on Thursday. The Astros play the LA Angels on Thursday before returning home to face the A’s. The A’s are off three days for the annual All-Star game.

The A’s will start the second half of the season with a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers on July 21st at the Oakland Coliseum. Then it’s the Texas Rangers, who the A’s just played the last three days, will be in Oakland for three Jul 22-24, and the Astros will be on hand for three more starting Jul 25-27th to close out the homestand.

The Astros have the best record in the AL West division. They are 57-30 and lead the second-place Seattle Mariners by eleven games. The A’s are in last place with a record of 30-60. The A’s are on pace to lose 108 games. Oakland has not had a season this bad since 1979.

The Astros have gone to the World Series in 2017, 2019, and 2021. They won the World Series crown in 2017. The Astros have a talented roster and show no signs of slowing down. The Astros have a very potent offense.

There are many familiar names in their lineup. Former AL MVP Jose Altuve leads the team. Other plays that can cause damage are third baseman Alex Bregman, rookie shortstop Jeremy Pena, first baseman Yuli Guriel, and utility player Aledmys Diaz.

The Astros’ star left fielder Michael Brantley is on the 10-day-IL. Chas McCormick or Jose Siri will fill in for Brantley. Jake Meyers will be in center field. Right fielder Kyle Tucker has killed the A’s in the past. Tucker will be going to the All-Star game as a reserve outfielder.

Houston’s Yordan Alvarez was also selected as an All-Star. Alvarez will not be able to DH for Houston in the series against the A’s as he is on the 10-day IL. Alvarez is hitting .306 with 26 home runs and 60 RBIs.

The Astros have not announced their pitching selections for the three-game series. The A’s announced that lefty Cole Irvin would pitch for Oakland Friday night. Irvin is 3-7 with an ERA of 3.31. Irvin has pitched well lately. The A’s offense has not given Irvin much support this season. The pitchers for the games on Saturday and Sunday have not been announced.

The A’s would love to win a series on the road. It will not be easy going against one of the best teams in baseball. If the A’s could take two out of three from Houston over the weekend, it could be quite a feather in the cap of manager Mark Kotsay’s.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: A’s try and rebound from Texas series as they open up in Houston on Friday night

Oakland A’s pitcher Paul Blackburn was racked up for five runs by the Texas Rangers in the first inning at Globe Life Field in Arlington on Wed Jul 13, 2022 but settled down for the rest of his six inning stint (AP News photo)

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry F:

#1 The Oakland A’s All Star representative Paul Blackburn got the Charlie Brown treatment surrendering five runs in the bottom of the first inning at Globe Life Field in Arlington to the Texas Rangers on Wednesday as the Rangers got off to a quick 5-0 lead.

#2 Jerry, what were some of the things that Blackburn struggled with in that first inning was it a matter of his not getting tracked or the Rangers were just seeing the ball very well.

#3 For the rest of his start Blackburn pitched shutout ball for the next five innings in the remaining time of his start and found his control.

#4 It was that first inning five run rally that stood up for the Rangers who wound up getting the 5-2 win over the A’s. The A’s who scored only two runs and again lacked the hitting needed to get back in the game.

#5 Starting pitchers for Friday in Houston as the A’s have Thursday off for Oakland Cole Irvin (3-7, 3.32) and Houston manager Dusty Baker has not yet announced a starter for Friday a 5:10 pm PDT first pitch at Minute Maid Field. Jerry can the A’s rebound from the last series they had with the Astros.

Earthquakes explode for a three goal first half, then hang on to beat Galaxy 3-2 in California Classico

The San Jose Earthquakes celebrate its 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy in the California Classico at Dignity Health Park on Wed July 13, 2022. (Reuters)

by Marko Ukalovic

CARSON, Calif. — Call it torture, call it whatever you want, the San Jose Earthquakes exorcised their demons on the road.

San Jose scored three goals in the first half for the first time this season and then held on by the skin of their teeth to defeat the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-2 and earned their first win on the road in the 94th installment of the California Classico on Wednesday evening at Dignity Health Park.

San Jose has beat Los Angeles in back-to-back Classicos in LA for the first time ever. They have points in four of their last five matches and sit five points out of seventh place, which the Galaxy presently occupy. Los Angeles has lost back-to-back matches and have conceded three goals in consecutive games.

San Jose (5-7-7-22 points) featured the return of midfielder Jamiro Monteiro back into the starting lineup for interim head coach Alex Covelo.

“It’s truly special (to win at the California Classico), I was talking to Chris Leitch before the game today that the last we were here all together was in 2007,” Covelo said.

Los Angeles (8-8-3-27 points) was without their leading goal scorer Chicharito (seven) and Marky Delgado due to injury.

The Earthquakes drew first blood early in the game when Julián Araujo tripped up Benji Kikanovic inside the box in the 12th minute drawing a penalty kick. Cristian Espinoza cashed in the PK a minute later when he beat Galaxy goalkeeper Jonathan Bond with a right footed shot into the lower right corner for his fifth goal of the season.

San Jose doubled its lead a minute later. Taking advantage of a bad back pass by Los Angeles in their own zone, Monteiro found Jeremy Ebobisse on the left wing. The native of Paris, France blasted a right footed shot to the same lower right corner for his team leading 11th goal of the season in the 14th minute.

Ebobisse is tied for second in the MLS with three other players with 11 goals.

The ‘Quakes scored their third unanswered goal of the half in the 40th minute. A nice give and go between Marcos Lopez and Kikanovic resulted in Lopez with a brilliant deke out on Bond and his left footed shot glided down the goal line inside the right post for his first goal of the season.

Los Angeles best scoring chance came in the first 45 minutes came at the 23rd minute mark. Samuel Grandsir’s point-blank shot from the left of the net was knocked away by ‘Quakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski.

The Galaxy opened the second half by cutting into the ‘Quakes lead. Kévin Cabral set up Dejan Joveljic, who roofed a shot top shelf beyond the reach of Marcinkowski for his seventh goal of the season in the 48th minute.

“The numbers speak for themselves, we are still giving up too many goals. We need to work on that and clean that up,” said Covelo.

Los Angeles controlled the play in the second half as San Jose sat back and played a prevent style of play that almost cost them the three points.

Joveljic made for an intense finish when he scored his second goal of the match late in the second half. Douglas Costa found Joveljic just outside the box. Joveljic faked out two different ‘Quake defenders before depositing the ball into the upper left corner of the net for his brace in the 88th minute.

Joveljic, who took over the team lead with his eighth goal of the season, has scored seven goals in his last six matches after only scoring three in his first 25.

Marcinkowski finished the match stopping eight of the 10 shots he faced, as he was the best player for San Jose in the second half, to earn his fifth win of the season. Bond made one save on four shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished the match with eight corner kicks. Los Angeles had 11.

Los Angeles has scored 11 goals in the final 15 minutes of a match this season. They are second in MLS in that category.

San Jose has won five of its last eight visits to the Galaxy in MLS play (5-3-0) after winning only five of its first 30 regular season visits. The Earthquakes won, 2-1, at Dignity Health Sports Park in their last visit last August.

It was the sixth time this season LA has conceded three goals in a match, losing all six. The Galaxy have a record of 8-2-3 in the 13 matches in which they’ve held opponents under three goals.

With his 11th goal of the season, Ebobisse now has eight goals in eight career MLS starts against Los Angeles. He’s failed to score only once in his eight MLS starts against LA.

UP NEXT: San Jose returns home to host the Houston Dynamo on Sunday 7/17 at 6:30pm at Pay Pal Park.
