Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez:

#1 The Las Vegas Raiders (2-7) once again get pummeled this time by the Cincinnati Bengals (4-5) at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati 41-24. In the first half Rich the Raiders did have a close half coming out of it trailing 17-10 and it looked like the Raiders were going to stay in step with the Bengals.

#2 Raider starting quarter back Gardner Minshew was 10-17, 124 yards, did not throw or carry for a touchdown and didn’t throw an interception. Minshew and the Raiders just couldn’t much going on scoring in the third and fourth quarters.

#3 The Raiders couldn’t shut down the Bengals scoring in the second half as the Bengals in third quarter scored 14 points and ten points in the fourth quarter to run away with the game.

#4 Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow got good protection and was mobile against the Raiders pass rush finishing with a line of 27-39, 251 yards, had all day to throw with five touchdowns and was intercepted once.

#5 The Raiders hope to end their current five game loss streak as they head to Miami and Hard Rock Stadium for a 10:00am PST kickoff with the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins have struggled of late as well with three loses in a row and they lost today 30-27 to the Buffalo Bills. The Dolphins drop their record to 2-6. Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had a 25-28 afternoon throwing for 231 yards and two touchdowns. Any chance the Raiders can snap out of this funk against the Dolphins next Sunday?

Vancouver wins it 3-2 snaps Sharks three game win streak at SAP

San Jose Sharks in Action Against the Vancouver Canucks on Nov 2, 2024 at SAP Center in San Jose (San Jose Sharks Media)

By Fernando Abarca

San Jose looked to keep the streak alive, but Vancouver found a way to do some damage

It was expected to be a close game all night, and that was the case in the final period. San Jose once again had problems maintaining the lead on the scoreboard, and this time, it cost them dearly. Puis Suter put Vancouver 3-2 over San Jose on Saturday Night action.

The first period looked pretty even with neither team scoring considering where Vancouver is in the standings.

San Jose’s Nico Sturm opened the scoring at the 17:27 mark of the second period. With San Jose being the team that opened the scoring it made the atmosphere of the place feel a little more for the 17,435 in attendance.

Vancouver then countered with an assist to Puis Suter tying the score with five minutes to go in the period.

The main action was concentrated in the last period of the game with San Jose killing two penalties, but also missing chances on the powerplays.

Vancouver got the other goal of the night. Jake DeBrusk with just 4 minutes to go put the visiting team ahead, San Jose was in trouble if they wanted to keep the winning streak that was the topic of conversation all week.

With an extra man, San Jose knew how to optimize its resources and Mikael Granlund made it 2-2 with a top-shelf shot, raising hopes of a possible overtime

With just 0:26 seconds left, San Jose could not contain Vancouver’s pressure and offensive attack. Puis Suter scored his double for the night, leaving the chances of a comeback very low.

The important thing at the end of the period was that the San Jose team showed fighting spirit and desire to win, as was when Fabian Zetterlund attempted a shot from inches away from Vancouver’s goal.

With this loss, San Jose has not been able to get a victory over Vancouver in quite some time, winning only two games in 15 games since 2020.

The next game will be against Columbus at home this Tuesday night at SAP Center

Bay FC headed to NWSL Playoffs; Big 3-2 win against Houston clinches it

Racheal Kundananji of Bay FC scores the first of two goals this one at 21st minute against the Houston Dash at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston on Sat Nov 2, 2024 (Bay FC X photo)

By William Espy

Bay FC had a crucial game on their final night of the season. It was do or die, as a single point against the Houston Dash would send the expansion side into the playoffs. A loss on the other hand, would put Bay’s fate in the hands of Racing Louisville. Saturday’s game was delayed due to inclement weather, and the game started with a wet pitch.

Bay FC Starting XI: Rowland, Malonson, Menges, Dahlkemper, Dydasco, Pickett, Bailey, Blade, Kundananji, Oshoala, Hill

Houston Starting XI: Hinz, Chapman, Jacobs, Nielsen, Schmidt, Yuki, Olivieri, Punigam, Gareis, Patterson, Harris

The Dash were without their starting goalkeeper, Jane Campbell, who was injured during international duty. As a result, Heather Hinz made her first career regular season start. The ball was able to beat Hinz in the 10th off of a set piece.

Paige Nielsen deflected the free kick past her goalkeeper, making it 1-0 early on for the visiting side. Bay FC had been 8-3-1 entering the night when they scored first, meaning a playoff berth seemed heavily in their favor. It didn’t take long for Houston to tie it up, as Barbara Olivieri extended her goal streak to three games in the 13th minute.

Shortly after Rachael Kundananji hit the inside of the goal post, she scored off of a corner. She shot it off of a volley in the 21st minute and Hinz had no chance of getting in front of it. While it would’ve been easy to deflate after giving up an equalizer so quickly, Bay FC bounced back and restored their lead.

A majority of Houston’s offense was going through Olivieri, which certainly a logical approach considering her recent form. Kundananji hit the crossbar late in the half, nearly extending Bay’s lead. Tess Boade had a shot blocked by Jyllissa Harris in the 45th minute.

Had the shot gotten through, it seemed like it was heading for the netting. Nielsen’s rough night continued, when she was shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Dorian Bailey. Bay FC maintained their 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

Bay FC made a couple of substitutions heading into the second half. Savy King and Penelope Hocking started the half in place of Alyssa Malonson and Asisat Oshoala.

Houston didn’t trail for long in the half, Avery Patterson beat Katelyn Rowland in the 46th minute, making it 2-2. While all Bay FC needed was a draw to guarantee a playoff spot, conceding that early in the half is dangerous considering the home team now had an entire half to get the lead.

Kundananji wouldn’t wait long to restore the lead, as she weaved through the defense in the 54th minute before beating Hinz to make it 3-2. Momentum was firmly in favor of Bay FC following the goal, as they immediately launched another attack.

Bailey forced Hinz to make a save early in the 57th minute. Kundananji went down after getting kicked in the face while making a late slide tackle, she was also shown a yellow card for the play. In the 63rd minute, Houston got the ball right in front of the goal but Caprice Dydasco was able to clear it out to save the lead.

Kundananji returned to the game after getting some attention on the sideline. She set up Hocking with a great opportunity in front of goal, but her first shot was saved and she ran out of space on the rebound. Momentum slowly started to head towards the Dash, as they had a few attacks of their own as the half progressed. In the 85th minute, King was taken out for Maddie Moreau. Kundananji hit the crossbar once again in the 86th.

Bay FC carried their 3-2 lead into stoppage time. All they needed to do to make the playoffs was not concede two goals in the final seven minutes of added time. Moreau had an important block in the 93rd minute.

Kundananji fired another shot in the 94th minute that forced Hinz to make another save. Caroline Conti came in for Kundananji late in stoppage time. Unfortunately, moments after coming into the game she took a ball to the side of the head and had to get attention from the training staff.

Ultimately, Bay FC held on to win 3-2. As a result, they became the second expansion side to earn a playoff berth, as the San Diego Wave did it previously.

Wolfpack hands Cardinal sixth straight defeat, wins ACC contest 59-28

Saturday, November 2, 2024

Stanford suffered its sixth consecutive football defeat in Raleigh, N.C., Saturday, as North Carolina State hammered the Cardinal 59-28 in Atlantic Coast Conference play while snapping a two-game home losing streak.

Hollywood Smothers and Jordan Waters each ran for two of the Wolfpack’s touchdowns, and quarterback CJ Bailey threw for three more. It was the first football meeting between NC State (5-4 overall, 2-3 ACC) and Stanford.

Waters rushed for 115 yards on five carries, and Smothers gained 100 yards on 15 attempts.

Bailey took over at quarterback for NC State after Grayson McCall was medically retired due to head injuries. He completed 18 of 20 passes for 234 yards.

Stanford (2-7 overall, 1-5 ACC) started strong, scoring on three of its first six possessions. Cardinal quarterback Ashton Daniels had touchdown runs of 67 and 48 yards while tying a single-game Stanford record for rushing by a quarterback with 129 yards on 11 carries.

NC State led 31-14 at halftime and finished the game with 527 total yards. Stanford lost despite racking up 398 yards in total offense.

Daniels was injured early in the third quarter on a hit by NC State’s Kemal Bonner that drew a roughing the passer penalty. Justin Lamson took over at quarterback for the Cardinal and ran for one touchdown and threw for another.

Largely because of Daniels’ efforts, the Cardinal rushed for 225 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. It was the first time Stanford accomplished that feat this season and the first time they’ve done it since 2022.

Cole Tabb made his college football debut and added 72 rushing yards, and Elic Avomanor caught four passes for 108 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Tevarua Tafiti made the first interception of his career in the fourth quarter. David Bailey added two sacks for the Cardinal.

After a bye week, Stanford plays its final home game of the season on Nov. 16, hosting Louisville.

Kings Lose Thriller In Overtime to Raptors 131-128; Sac ends 3 game win streak

Toronto Raptors guard Ochai Agbaji (30) drives on the Sacramento Kings forward DeMar DeRozan (10) in first half action at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on Sat Nov 2, 2024. (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The Sacramento Kings (3-3) had a slow start as they took on the Toronto Raptors (2-5) losing in overtime 131-128. The Raptors led for most of the game but Sacramento was able to tie up the game in the fourth quarter as the clock ran out.

They had so many opportunities throughout this game as well as in the overtime but just couldn’t cash in. DeMar DeRozan had a season high of 33 points. Domantas Sabonis had a triple double and Keegan Murray finished with a double double before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

Game recap: It was a most entertaining first quarter with a multitude of lead changes. This game could not have been closer and the game was tied with 2:28 at 24. The Raptors were having some success off the bench with ten points scored.

As the first 12 minutes expired Toronto had dictated the pace of the game and had taken a 37-29 lead. The Raptors bench player Chris Boucher was the only player on the court with double digits .

He had hit most of the final 17 points scored by the Raptors in the quarter finishing with 12 points. Sacramento had poor ball protection in the quarter with five turnovers. Trailing by eight points, the Kings had some work to do.

The Raptors continued to extend their lead going into the second quarter. Injuries to the versatile wing Scottie Barnes and multi-faceted Kelly Olynyk had not hurt the Raptors so far in the game.

The Kings continued to bring up the rear trailing 59-49 with 4:50 left in the first half of play. Sacramento needed some sort of rally in the worst way and they did close a 12 point deficit significantly, cutting the Raptor lead to three points trailing at the half 63-66.

Sacramento had gone on an eight point run. Keegan Murray and De’Aaron Fox had begun to heat up and Malik Monk off the bench was the high score for the team with 15 points.

There was a special event on the floor at halftime. Vince Carter was honored for a remarkable career as he became the first Raptor to have his number 15 jersey retired. The entire arena celebrated this legend, this icon with thunderous applause. An emotional Carter fought back tears as he was introduced in this milestone moment in Raptor history. Canada finally had their very own Superstar when Carter came on the scene.

After the ceremony the third quarter got underway. The start of the quarter was a see-saw until the Raptors went on a run taking a ten-point lead to finish the quarter leading 96-86. They continued to control the pace going into the fourth quarter. Sacramento did pull to within two points but the Raptors went on yet another run and trailing by ten points, the Kings were unable to get over the top in this game.

The Raptors were out-rebounding the Kings, killing them from outside and also barely winning the battle from the field. This young Toronto team was giving the Kings all kinds of trouble and their record hardly indicates the talent that this team has.

They had been very impressive through three quarters. With 2:58 left in the game, the score was 111-110 in favor of the Raptors. The Kings had made their run and needed to sustain their effort and finally take the lead.

Toronto refused to back down taking their lead back to 113-110. Sacramento pushed back trailing by a single point 112-113. When it all was looking good for the Kings, Toronto hit another three, their 16th of the game.

This game was going down to the wire with Sacramento continuing to play catchup as Toronto hit their 17th three. With 28 ticks left on the clock it was a one-point game. Domantas Sabonis made a tip shot to tie up this game at 120 when the clock ran out. The game went into overtime and unfortunately, Keegan Murray had fouled out of the game at the end of the fourth quarter.

The Raptors got a solid start in overtime scoring a couple of buckets taking a 124-120 lead. With nine seconds left on the clock, Toronto’s RJ Barrett missed two free throws and the door was open for the Kings to tie up this game trailing 128-131. De’Aaron Fox closed the door missing a 27-foot jumper and the final score was 131-128 in favor of the Raptors.

This was a tough loss for the Kings. They had 18 turnovers and at times disappointing rebounding coupled with missed shots. DeMar DeRozan bettered his season high of 27 last night finishing with 33 points in this game. De’Aaron Fox scored 24 points and unfortunately missed the shot that counted the most in the final seconds. Malik Monk had 21 points off the bench

Game notes: Scotiabank Arena in Toronto Friday night the Kings hung on for their third win in a row beating the Atlanta Hawks 123-115 and couldn’t win their their fourth win in a row. They took to the court without Kevin Huerter who will be replaced by Doug McDermott in the starting lineup.

Huerter is out of the lineup missing his first game of the season with a non-covid illness. DeMar DeRozan received huge applause from fans in attendance welcoming him back on his former home court. He was a member of the Raptors from 2009-2018.

He had a special moment with former Toronto superstar Vince Carter who played for the Raptors from 1998-2004 and was the first Raptor to have his number retired. That jersey retirement ceremony took place at halftime. As far as the Raptor injury list, Scottie Barnes and Kelly Olynyk did not take the court. Bruce Brown and defender Immanuel Quickley rounded out the list for Toronto.

Monday night, the Kings will be in Miami taking on the Heat. Tipoff for this game is scheduled for 5:15 PM.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: El Tiante visiting Oakland in 1974

The author Amaury Pi Gonzalez (left) interviews Boston Red Sox pitcher Luis Tiant (right) in the Red Sox dugout at the Oakland Coliseum in 1974 (photo from Amaury Pi Gonzalez)

El Tiante visiting Oakland in 1974

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Amaury Pi-González

Cuban-born Luis Tiant was one of history’s most unique and charismatic pitchers. He hypnotized hitters with his windup, spinning like a top on the mound, as hitters usually saw his number on his back before the ball came to the plate. He owned a vibrant personality and, for years, at Fenway Park, had his popular Cuban Food kiosk. He could be seen eating lunch with fans, signing autographs, and taking pictures, especially with Red Sox Nation fans.

El Tiante was born in Marianao, Habana, Cuba, on November 23, 1940, and died on October 8, 2024, in Wells, Maine. He was 83 years old. As a kid in Havana, I had memories, along with my father, of the pleasure of seeing him pitch in the old Cuban Winter League for the Leones del Habana.

Decades later, I met him as a pitcher in the major leagues with the Boston Red Sox. He also pitched for the Havana Sugar Kings of the old International League from 1959 to 1962. Mexico City Tigers, Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, and his favorite organization, the Boston Red Sox.

His 19-year career began in 1964 and ended in 1982, with 229 games won and 172 lost, an earned run average of 3.30, 3,486 innings pitched, 2,416 strikeouts, and 49 shutouts.

Tiant led the American League in ERA in 1968 and 1972; historically, his 1.60 ERA in 1968 was the best in the American League in 50 years. In 1972, he won the American League Comeback Player of the Year. He was selected to the All-Star Game three times and won 20 or more games. He led the American League in shutouts in 1966, 1968, and 1974. Previously, early in his career, in 1967, he led the American League in strikeouts per nine innings pitched.

He had a great career worthy of the Hall of Fame, but he never received serious consideration. He was mentioned on ballots more than 30% of the time only once, in his first year of eligibility in 1988. He was inducted into the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame in 2002 and in 1997 into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame, in 2009 the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

Pitched in Venezuela from 1963-1982 for the Leones del Caracas teams that won two championships and a no-hitter in 1971. Luis Tiant should be in the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, I have hope that he might still make it on the Veterans Committee.

Time will tell, but El Tiante was another gem produced by the country of Cuba a pioneer in the history of baseball in Latin America. During his 19-year career, Tiant pitched for six major league teams and cemented his place in New England baseball with his 1975 World Series performance for the Red Sox.

The day Tiant passed, former Red Sox outfielder Fred Lynn and others paid tribute to Tiant on social media. “Today is a very sad day, Lynn wrote on X along with a picture of himself and Tiant. “My friend and teammate, Luis Tiant, passed away.”

A Big game pitcher, a funny genuine guy who loved his family and baseball. Luis Tiant (like most Cuban players who left their country) did not sympathized with the Fidel Castro communist dictatorship, but his love for Cuba and the Cuban people never waned.

Luis Tiant told ESPN “Castro’s Cuba ‘took away the freedom, the happiness, the dreams”. In 2007 El Tiante visited Cuba, almost 50 years after he was unable to return home due to political reasons. During that trip he visited family and friends and took a lot of American goodies, food candy all the good stuff that brought happiness to his compatriots.

#2 A’s executive Sandy Dean said that construction details, a financing plan are going to be in place. There will be a Dec 5th meeting with the Las Vegas Stadium Authority and final approvals for the $1.5 billion, 30,000 seat that will have a 33,000 capacity should be approved.

#3 Construction for the project is scheduled to begin Spring 2025 and the targeted opening date is 2028. The State of Nevada will be funding some $380 million towards the new park that will be located at the old Tropicana site located at Las Vegas Blvd and is targeted to open in 2028.

#4 Alexander Marks Schools over Stadiums spokesman and Schools over Stadiums who are education group fighting to stop public state funding that is going to pay for the A’s Las Vegas ballpark has not given up the fight and are hoping to get an initiative on the 2026 ballot that would stop the state funding for the A’s Vegas ballpark. Schools over Stadiums said last week that “we will continue our fight, including taking it to the streets with a referendum petition to protect Nevada’s tax dollars.”

#5 With the Fisher family getting very close to the stadium construction costs they are also getting loans to cover the costs from Goldman Sachs and US Bank, if there were any doubts before about financing the stadium Dean said this is the evidence you need, this “concludes the Fisher family has more than sufficient resources to fund the equity investment that’s required to build the stadium.”
