Earthquakes’ comeback effort falls short as they lose 3-2 to the Lions

The San Jose Earthquakes were back in action with a cross-country match against the Orlando City SC at Orlando City Stadium Saturday.

The Quakes players sported jerseys made of 100% recycled materials, courtesy of the MLS and Parley, in support of the annual Greener Goals weekย as Earth Day is just around the corner.

The Quakes were off in Orlando, but the Lions jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at the second minute. Christopher Mueller streaked down the right side and put one past Andrew Tarbell for the fastest goal in Lions’ history.

Following the Lions’ early surge, the Quakes casted stronger spells of possession and attack. Tarbell made a tremendous save at the 12th minute, but Orlando City interrupted San Jose’s defense with a goal from Sacha Kljestan, who finished an unselfish assist from Mueller, for a 2-0 lead at the 35th minute.

The Quakes trailed the Lions 2-0 at the end of the first half.

The Quakes were back for the second half. San Jose made it a one-goal game, but they fell just short of what could’ve been a possible win over Orlando in front of a sold-out crowd of 25,527 in attendance.

Justin Meram kicked the ball to Dom Dwyer, who completed an onside kick for a 3-0 lead at the 70th minute.

Florian Jungwirth scored a goal to help the Quakes avoid a shutout at the 78th minute.

San Jose made their final change of the evening as they took out Danny Hoesen in favor of Quincy Amarikwa at the 82nd minute. The change occurred just minutes after Orlando City pulled Mueller for Josue Colman.

Once again, Tarbell made a high-caliber save to keep the score a one-goal game as the clock winded down to four minutes of stoppage time following regulation. Then, Jungwirth notched his second goal of the game, pulling the Quakes within one at the 90th minute.

Josue also constructed a salivating cross at the 90th minute. Nobody was at the end of it, which was a good thing for the Lions.

The Lions picked up their fourth straight win with a 3-2 victory over the Quakes.

Earthquakes drop 2-1 decision to NYCFC

By: Ana Kieu

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Earthquakes returned home for a redemption match, hosting NYCFC at Avaya Stadium Saturday night.

In case you missed it, San Jose dropped a 3-2 decision to Sporting KC at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Mo., on March 17.

The Quakes had a lot to look forward to coming into this nationally televised match against NYCFC on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and TSN2.ย Vako Qazaishvili returned to the field and these two teams were just moments away from competing in a West Coast vs. East Coast match.

The Quakes didn’t waste any time getting on the board as Yeferson Quintana got his first goal as a member of the Blue and Black at the third minute of the first half. Just moments later, Quintana had a good look on the field.

Oh yeah, and Krazy George was in attendance. In case you didn’t know, Krazy George is the world’s most famous cheerleader as well as the creator of the “wave.”

For the second time in one week, Vako made a powerful kick that went just above the opponent’s net at the 31st minute of the half in an attempt to be featured on SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays on ESPN.

The Quakes held a 1-0 lead over NYCFC at halftime. Shots were 5-3 in favor of San Jose.

NYCFC’s Anton Tinnerholm scored his second career MLS goal to even the score 1-1 at the 49th minute of the second half.

Quakes captain Chris Wondolowski applied pressure on the NYCFC backline at the 54th minute of the half, but the score remained tied 1-1.

NYCFC took a 2-1 lead when Maxi Moralez scored the go-ahead goal at the 60th minute of the half.

Harold Cummings was kicked by an NYCFC player at the 75th minute of the half. Cummings was able to pick himself up off the ground, but he was shook up pretty bad, so Quincy Amarikwa stepped onto the field to replace Cummings.

There was six minutes of stoppage after these two teams battled it out in two halves. Vako kicked a goal into the net at the 95th minute, but a NYCFC defender blocked the kick from entering the net.

The Quakes lost to NYCFC 2-1 in full time.

Landon Donovan returns to San Jose, Earthquakes fall to Club Lรฉon 1-0

By Alexandra Evans

SAN JOSE — For their third match of the 2018 season, the San Jose Earthquakes took on the visiting Club Lรฉon, to whom they fell 1-0.

Quakes captain Chris Wondolowski came close to a breakaway goal just over a minute into the first half before he was called offsides. After receiving a smooth pass from Quincy Amarikwa, Magnus Eriksson attempted a shot with much force at the net at the seventh minute, which went over the bar. Lรฉonโ€™s Landon Donovan, a former Earthquake, broke the scoring silence at the 19-minute mark when he struck the ball past Quakes starting goaltender Andrew Tarbell.

The board remained scoreless for the remainder of the match with both teams having subbed out several starters from the 46th minute to the 74th minute and received numerous good scoring chances accompanied by good defense. Lรฉon took home the 1-0 victory.

Donovan, who scored the gameโ€™s only goal (the game-winner), is known to be the greatest American menโ€™s soccer player. He was on a loan with San Jose from 2001 to 2004 and helped lead the Quakes to MLS Cup wins in 2001 and 2003.

The Quakes will return to Avaya Stadium on Saturday, March 31 to face New York City FC. Kick-off is at 4:45 p.m. PDT.ย

Thompson, Quakes outduel Kamar, Galaxy in 4-2 win

~ By Pearl Allison Lo

~ IRVINE — Both San Jose Earthquakes’ Tommy Thompson and Los Angeles Galaxy’s Ola Kamara scored braces, but the Earthquakes prevailed with a 4-2 California Clasico win over the Galaxy at Orange County Great Park Saturday.

It was a new location for the preseason exhibition between the teams.

Thompson scored his first two goals of the preseason in the 54th and 90th minutes, while Kamara scored his second and third goal of the preseason in the 36th and 74th minutes.

San Jose saw familiar faces at the opposite end of the field, in former goalie David Bingham and trialist Cordell Cato. Thompson replied, โ€œBingham and Cordell are my good friends. Theyโ€™re great players, so itโ€™s always fun to line up against somebody you have history with, so I enjoyed it out there.โ€

The four goals for the Quakes were a preseason high for this year, their previous being two. The Galaxy had scored three goals apiece in all their preseason games up until this one.

Los Angeles outshot San Jose in both halves, 10-8 and 12-7 for a total of 22-15.

Quakesโ€™ head coach Mikael Stahre commented, โ€œIโ€™m happy to score four away goals for sure. I think the performance, especially in the second half was good, but in general, I think we conceded too many chances actually. It was an equal game. We were a little bit more effective obviously…Iโ€™m okay with this performance, but we have to be better in defense.โ€

San Jose goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell made five saves in the first half.

One of them included a head on chest save against Romain Alessandrini right before Alessandrini had to jump over Tarbell, followed by another Galaxy attempt off the rebound. Tarbell got his hands on it before the ball went back and was cleared by Shea Salinas in the 31st minute.

Pressure versus the Quakes continued to mount and finally paid dividends. Kamara took a pass from Emmanuel Boateng in front of the San Jose defenders and struck first in the game between Tarbellโ€™s right leg and the near post.

The Quakes came up with a quick response though. After a throw-in to Giovani dos Santos, his pass was intercepted and the kick went to Chris Wondolowski who made a bit of a straightaway shot past a diving Bingham. Ashley Cole tried going into the net to save the ball, but it was too late.

San Jose continued scoring with two swift goals when the first half players combined with second half substitutes, those two being Alashe and Thompson who entered at halftime. ย

First, Bingham made an initial save as he slid to stop Wondolowski, but the rebound went to Thompson who headed the ball into the net to give their first lead in the 54th minute.

The Quakes then extended their advantage in the 55th minute. Thompson had the initial run to get into Los Angelesโ€™ zone. ย Danny Hoesen made the shot and the ensuing rebounds ended off Faita Alasheโ€™s head into the net to make it 4-2.

The Galaxy edged closer when G. dos Santos crossed the ball to Ashley Cole and Tarbell followed to defend Cole. With the net open, Cole kicked the ball across the net, San Joseโ€™s Yeferson Quintana got a touch on it and Kamara found net at the right side for his brace.

Alessandrini nearly tied the game up as he went just wide in the 87th minute.

Thompson tallied his second when Chris Wehan, who entered in the 78th minute, slid the ball from the left as Thompson received and moved the ball forward for the 4-2 score, followed by a celebration. Thompson laughed, โ€œI saw they danced a little bit when they scored, so after I scored the first one I thought โ€˜man why didnโ€™t I danceโ€™ and so once I got the second one Iโ€™m like, โ€˜Alright. I guess I have to now.โ€™โ€

Earthquakes shutout Reno 1868 FC 4-0 in preseason match

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Following a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake in Arizona, the San Jose Earthquakes returned home to Avaya Stadium to host the Reno 1868 FC in a preseason match on Saturday afternoon.

The Earthquakes were literally off and running from Avaya Stadium. Quakes forward Danny Hoesen slotted home a kick that went over the head of Reno goalkeeper Russ Klabough for a 1-0 lead at the fifth minute of the first half.

The Quakes didn’t take long to find the back of the net today. Hoesen kicked in his second goal of the match for a 2-0 lead at the 21st minute of the first. Just four minutes later, Quakes rookie Magnus Eriksson got his first goal of the preseason at the 25th minute of the first, giving his team a 3-0 lead.

Eriksson was a new striker, but he had no trouble in today’s match as he found the back of the net at the 37th minute. The Quakes grabbed a 4-0 lead, and carried the comfortable cushion to the locker room at halftime.

The Quakes made five substitutions at the 64th minute. Eriksson, Vako, Shea Salinas, Nick Lima and Florian Jungwirth left the match. Joel Qwiberg, Paul Marie, Luis Felipe, Chris Wehan and Mohamed Thiaw entered the match.

The Quakes took a big step forward in their affiliation with Reno. They displayed good sportsmanship by saying “good game” to the visiting team.

Final: Quakes shutout Reno 4-0.

Earthquakes fall short at home in international friendly

by Michael Martinez

SAN JOSE- The San Jose Earthquakes invited C.F. Pachuca, a club from Mexico and last year’s Liga MX champions, to play in an international friendly in San Jose. The Quakes attempted a big comeback but ultimately fell short, losing 4-3 as time expired.

The first half was all Pachuca as the international club netted two first half goals to hold a two goals to none lead. It appeared that if the first half continued into the second, San Jose was headed for some major trouble.

And when the second half begun, it looked troubling as the visiting team struck first with another goal early in the half from a penalty kick. Fortunately, San Jose was poised to fight back down by ย three goals and they did just that.

In minute 64, the Earthquakes were on the scoreboard, when midfielder Tommy Thompson found the back of the net for the first time this season. Thompson has been on loan from SJ’s affiliate, the Sacramento Republic FC, since July. Four other players from the Sac Republic squad came on loan to compete in the friendly as well.

The Quakes showed a ton of fight, even though their opponent scored on a penalty kick again just two minutes later. San Jose battled back down by three goals and actually scored a minute after Pachuca. Midfielder Shea Salinas was the shooter as he nailed the far side netting.

In between minutes 60 and 70, the two teams scored three goals altogether as both offenses hit their stride with a little bit of help from chippy play. Pachuca’s midfielder, Ruben Botta, received two yellow cards and was sent off the field around the same time as all the goals.

With their opponents down a man, the Earthquakes hoped to take advantage and cut the two goals lead. However, it took the team too long as they ย were finally able to cut the lead to one in the second minute of extra play.

Once again it was Salinas who got it past the goalkeeper, but ultimately the Earthquakes fell short, 4-3.

Salinas had a tremendous game and some incredible ย goals to go with it. The Quakes have struggled to score recently so Saturday night’s friednly was a positive for them going forward.

San Jose’s next matchup is against the Seattle Sounders, next Saturday in San Jose at Avaya Stadium.

Small Package Delivers Huge First Win of 2014 for Earthquakes

By Matthew Harrington

SANTA CLARA, Calif. โ€“ The man who stands shortest on the Earthquakes squad elevated his game head and shoulders above his competition in San Joseโ€™s first win of the 2014 season. Minute midfielder Yannick Djalo tallied his first MLS goal in a 1-0 triumph over visiting Chivas USA at Buck Shaw Stadium, providing a scoring spark in the 66th minute for the scuffling San Jose side after subbing in to open the second half. San Jose was booked for three yellow cards in a physical tilt, while the visitors were assessed two yellows and a red card, a booking on their goalkeeper for playing a ball outside of the penalty box.

The Quakes (1-2-3) opened play Saturday knotted with Montreal for the fewest points in the MLS standings, but Chivas proved just the opponent to help San Jose turn around its five-game winless streak in 2014. San Jose has not lost to Chivas in any of the encounters over the last two seasons.

The Rojiblancos (1-4-3) took their 2014 season opener 3-2 over visiting Chicago but failed to find the W in six consecutive games to sit just three points ahead of San Jose in the league table. With the win, the Earthquakes tied Chivas with six points earned on the campaign.

โ€œYou never want to wait too long for the first one,โ€ said Earthquakes coach Mark Watson. โ€œWeโ€™ve waited a little bit. Itโ€™s a relief. We still have work to do. Itโ€™s three points. We take it, we run with it and we get back to work on Monday.โ€

Djalo, an import on loan from Sport Lisbon e Benefica of Portugalโ€™s Primeira Liga, received a Shea Salinas cross and tucked a bouncer just inside of the left post for a precision strike out of reach of diving Chivas keeper Dan Kennedy.

โ€œIt was a great team play,โ€ said Djalo through an interpreter. โ€œSalinas made a great pass over to me. I was happy to score the goal, but it was the high level of the team that got the goal. The ball made the goal. I just wanted to focus and put it into the corner.โ€

The winning volley marks the first career MLS goal for the five-foot-six veteran of 166 professional games, all abroad, in only his fourth game in the States.

โ€œThe teams are all competitive here,โ€ said Djalo of the MLS. โ€œThat makes every game competitive. Thereโ€™s a lot of hard work to be done. That makes me excited every game.โ€

For Djalo, the issue hasnโ€™t been adjusting to the league as much as it has been overcoming injury, chiefly tightness in his right hamstring that has limited his availability in the early going. Watson utilized Djalo sparingly in his three previous MLS engagements, coming on in the 79th minute or later in two of three appearances. He entered the game at the half in March 13thโ€™s loss to the Columbus Crew for his longest stint before tonight.

โ€œLast week I wasnโ€™t in the condition to play,โ€ said Djalo. โ€œI was a little sore still and couldnโ€™t get through a game. Thanks to the work of the medical staff here, they did a great job with me all week. I was able to get on the field for 45 minutes. I hope thatโ€™s going to be a little bit more.โ€

โ€œThere was an argument to start him,โ€ said Watson. โ€œWe felt with the way his hamstring has been the last couple of weeks, it wasnโ€™t the prudent thing to do. Heโ€™s getting close. Heโ€™s a real dynamic player. He helps us when heโ€™s on the pitch.โ€

For the second straight game, Quakes keeper Jon Busch collected the clean sheet, blanking the Rojiblancos one week after shutting out the Colorado Rapids in a scoreless draw on the road. Busch handled all three shots labelled for the San Jose net, while his defenders managed a pair of blocked shots and forced 10 Rojiblanco shots off target.

โ€œWeโ€™ve got some tremendous defenders on this team,โ€ said Busch. โ€œItโ€™s coming together very nicely defensively. I thought Victor (Bernardez) and Clarence (Goodson) did a beautiful job dealing with some very dangerous crosses. I was very happy with them in front of me. They were tremendous tonight.โ€

The Quake defense proved especially stout against Chivas striker Erick Torres. Torres took the pitch tied with Clint Dempsey for the MLS in goals atop the chase for the Golden Boot. Though Torresโ€™ loaded foot had already found the back of the net six times previously this season, San Jose kept him off the sheet. Torres managed multiple chances on net by way of kick and header, but none found their mark thanks to his oppositionโ€™s containment.

โ€œThe defense played strong,โ€ said Watson. โ€œThatโ€™s one of the things weโ€™ve been working on, being tougher to break down. Getting two shutouts in a row helps us confidence-wise. There are still little things we need to do.โ€

Proving defensively stout has been critical for the denizens of Buck Shaw Stadium as they slog through a scoring drought. San Jose owns only one game with more than one goal scored in their favor this season in six attempts. A handful of injuries to start the season have hampered San Joseโ€™s offensive rhythm, especially at the midfield position, but the team appears close to being on the mend.

โ€œWe work every day on both sides of the ball,โ€ said Watson. โ€œI donโ€™t think the team is where it needs to be. The groupโ€™s getting healthy, which helps. We get more time to work together as a group and weโ€™ll continue to do that.โ€

Among the wounded rounding into form, Watson put heavy emphasis on what a hampered Djalo has brought, and what the expectations for him will be when heโ€™s at full strength.

โ€œRight from the start of the second half, he gave us that little spark,โ€ said Watson. โ€œThe thing with him is, heโ€™s got a good technical base. He can get out of pressure. Heโ€™s most dangerous when he can get space, when he runs. He made a great run to the far post and a great finish.

Despite a feeling around the team that the Portuguese player may be called upon to be San Joseโ€™s next potent weapon, the smallish soccer star-in-waiting handles the weight with aplomb.

โ€œEveryone feels the same pressure,โ€ said Djalo. โ€œYou have to come into the game, do the best you can, contribute to the team and try to get wins. The pressure is the same for everybody. I play the game to help contribute to my teammates. They go through a lot of hard work every week, every game. I just want to help them succeed.โ€

Saturdayโ€™s score certainly made Djalo a popular man, both with the fans and his new teammates who now know what it feels like to have a mark under the win column in the league standings. The Earthquakes now carry a little less pressure heading into next weekโ€™s showdown in Vancouver against the Whitecaps no longer mired in last place in the Western Conference.

โ€œWe got the monkey off our back,โ€ said Busch. โ€œHopefully we can relax and play our game.โ€

Quakes top Rapids to stay alive in MLS playoffs race

By Ivan Makarov

SANTA CLARA, CA — A couple of months ago the odds of San Jose Earthquakes making MLS playoffs didn’t look good, as the team kept losing points while unable to produce offense. They even parted ways with their head coach Frank Yallop who led the team to 2012 Supporters Shield award only a year ago. But after tightening its defense with the signing of Clarence Goodson, and focusing on offense in training, the things finally started to come together for the Quakes and its interim head coach Mike Watson.

That improvement calumniated in a key victory against the divisional opponent Colorado Rapids on Wednesday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. The race for the five playoffs spots in the West is staying very close this year between seven teams, and to stay alive Quakes needed a victory against Colorado, one of the two teams right in front of them. With the big goal by its captain Chris Wondowski, the Quakes earned 1-0 win and kept themselves alive in this close race to the finish.

“That was probably a must-win game for us tonight,” said Mike Watsonย afterย the game. “We needed the three points. I donโ€™t think one would have been enough. I donโ€™t think you go into a game with that as your main thought, but you know the result you need to come away with. I thought our guys were excellent tonight. We were on top of the game from the start. We were sharp, moved the ball well and had a bunch of great chances.”

The key moment of the game happened on the 69th minute from two set pieces inside the Rapids territory. It all ย started with a cross from a free kick taken by Rafael Baka from 40 or so yards out which found Wondolowski’s head inside the penalty box. Wondo put a shot on target, but Colorado’s goalkeeper Clinton Irwin made a great save, putting the ball above the goal, resulting in the Quakes’ corner kick.

Shea Salinas took that corner and sent the ball back to the Quakes top goalscorer Wondolowski. He once again beat his coverage, and put another header on goal, which went in this time. This was Wondo’s 10th goal of the season, and his league-leading seventh game winning goal. It’s also worth noting that it was a well deserved assist for Salinas, who was brilliant all night, orchestrating most of the attacks with his speed and creativity.

“Shea [Salinasโ€™] service has been excellent,” said Mike Watson. “Heโ€™s somebody who thrives off running past defenders. He wants those one-on-one match-ups. Heโ€™s quick and has good control and his service is usually very good when he gets in dangerous spots. Tonight, I thought his service was great.”

Quakes had the chance to score other goals in the game, creating multiple chances from crosses inside the zone, where Rapids defense seemed to struggle. Alan Gordon had at least two great scoring chances from headers, as did Wondolowski who had a chance to score from a breakaway at the start of the second half. Quakes outshot the Rapids 8-0 with shots on target. At the same time, Quakes were excellent on their own back end, with Colorado earning only a couple of chances to score – mostly early ย in the game. Jon Busch earned his eighth shutout of the season.

“As the season draws to an end, it feels like each game gets more emotional,” said Chris Wondolowski. “The guys were loose before the game and it helped ease the nerves because this match was a must-win situation here at home. We were so excited to play tonight; I was fired up all game and itโ€™s always great to play in front of our home fans here at Buck Shaw [Stadium]. Now we are a point back of where we want to be and know that if we take care of business we will be rewarded.”

The game turned out to be a close to a complete performance by the home team in front of the sold out crowd of 10,525. The win improved the Quakes to 4-0-1 in their last five games. With two games remaining in the season, San Jose needs to continue winning, as they finish the season against LA and Dallas. But they’re keeping their hopes up and such performance should add to their confidence going into those final games.
