Marleau magic as Sharks winless no more, 5-4

After sitting on the pine without a team, 40-year old Patrick Marleau scored twice versus the Chicago Blackhawks Thursday in his return, as the San Jose Sharks, hungry for a win, were finally successful.

Chicago remained winless this time, but it was only their second game.

The Sharks got their first lead of the season with Barclay Goodrow at 4:47 of the third, which would prove to be the game-winner.

With the question of Mr. San Jose’s presence making a difference in the air, it would take a bit of time. The Sharks still gave up the first goal within the first 10 minutes and every time they scored, the Blackhawks had an answer.

However, while the number of goals given up stayed the same, San Jose improved on their number of goals (four) and power play goals (two), both season-highs. They also kept up with their opponent’s scoring as the result of the contest went down to the wire. San Jose goalie Aaron Dell made 26 saves, including one against Alex DeBrincat with less seconds than the fingers on your hand.

The Sharks’ Brent Burns earned his 200th career goal and Kevin Labanc also tallied.

For Chicago, Andrew Shaw put in a pair of goals too. Dylan Strome and Dominik Kubalik chimed in with a goal apiece.

The teams traded goals for the majority of the game and combined for eight goals split evenly between the first two periods.

It was familiar territory for San Jose as Kubalik notched his first NHL goal from between the faceoff circle and the goal line at 5:07 of the opening period. David Kampf missed a shot and Dell stopped three shots beforehand.

The Sharks replied with their second power-play opening goal in as many games. Labanc angled his shot at 11:30 right at the red line.

Shaw scored his first goal at 13:22 on his third attempt.

Marleau would even things again plus add another power play goal before time expired, tipping Erik Karlsson’s shot at 19:43.

Shaw added his second at 9:27 after DeBrincat stole the puck from Karlsson.

Responding in a whopping 33 seconds, Burns took his shot from the red line with his back to the boards and his career goal went in off the stick of Connor Murphy. Dylan Gambrell had his second assist, his third in two games.

Dylan Strome made it 4-3 at 12:14 when the Blackhawks outnumbered San Jose heading to the net.

Marleau would finish another period evening for his team when fished the puck from the boards, followed it and won the hard battle up front at 17:46.

Before the game-winner, Goodrow took the pass from Joe Thornton around the net and waited before beating goalie Corey Crawford.

Dell and the Sharks weathered a Karlsson giveaway, killed off a penalty where Vlasic critically blocked a shot from Patrick Kane and held off the extra attacker flurry the rest of the game.

Up Next: Marleau and Kubalik led with six shots apiece. San Jose now returns home for three, starting with the Calgary Flames Sunday at 7 pm.

Headline Sports podcast with London Marq: Will Rockets’ Morey get fired over tweet about Hong Kong?; Quakes only needed one game and couldn’t do it; plus more

On the Headline Sports podcast with London Marq:

#1 Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey apologized for tweeting that “We should stand with Hong Kong.” A statement that had China suspend all NBA games on state-ran TV, all NBA brands and any activities associated with the NBA because of Morey’s tweet. A source said that Morey’s job is on the line, but the Rockets’ front office has denied that Morey’s job is in flux, but stated that they don’t deny it’s a messy situation.

#2 The San Jose Earthquakes finished up the 2019 season on the outside looking in when they had the postseason by the tail and then went on to lose six straight games, including being eliminated last Sunday in Portland with a 3-1 loss. A disappointing end to say the least for Quakes head coach Matias Almeyda.

#3 The Sacramento Kings lost their first two preseason games in India to the Indiana Pacers. The Kings used most of their rookies, draft picks, and C-League prospects. The Kings return back to Sacramento on Thursday night at Golden 1 Center to host the Phoenix Suns. What will head coach Luke Walton be looking for in that one?

#4 Try hard as they may, the San Jose Sharks — who were down just by one goal 2-1 — had a shot at tying the game in the third period with the Nashville Predators, but the Preds scored three times to take a three-goal win 5-2 to beat the Sharks. Is it goaltending or is it the defense up in front giving little or no protection for goalie Martin Jones?

#5 Finally, everyone is talking about the San Francisco 49ers, a team that saw their starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo throw for 181 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-3 laugher at Levi’s Stadium on Monday Night Football.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Len Shapiro: Sharks remain winless, can’t score on Predators in third period

sfgate.com photo: The Sharks tied their worst start to a season in franchise history, equaling their opening rut in the 1993-94 season, the club is now 0-4.

On the SJ Sharks podcast with Len Shapiro:

#1 Another tough loss for the Sharks as they remain winless at 0-4. The losses are mounting and the offseason departures of Joe Pavelski, Joonas Donskoi, Justin Braun, and Gustav Nyquist — all of whom are severely missed.

#2 The Sharks and Nashville Predators on Tuesday night played a mostly tight game with the Preds ahead 2-1 going into the third period. It was the third period when the Predators broke it open with three goals in the third period to end any chance for a San Jose comeback.

#3 Let’s talk about the dressing room — the morale of the team they opened up the season on the road in Vegas and lost, lost to Vegas in San Jose last Friday night and then lost two games on this current three-game road trip. Talking with the players at the morning skate and after games, the morale has to be pretty low right now.

#4 The second period of the game in Nashville, the Sharks were able to kill off two out of three penalties and outshoot the Predators 18-7, but just couldn’t find the back of the net.

#5 The Sharks head to Chicago to face the Blackhawks. The Hawks have suffered of late winning only two of their last seven games. This might be the Sharks’ best chance to get in the win column for their first win of the year.

Sharks Fall to Predators 5-2 in Nashville

mercurynews.com photo

By Mary Walsh

The San Jose Sharks lost 5-2 to the Nashville Predators Tuesday night at Bridgestone Arena. Nashville goals came from Roman Josi (2), Kyle Turris, Filip Forsberg and Dante Fabbro. Pekka Rinne made 33 saves for the win. Evander Kane and Brent Burns scored for San Jose, while Martin Jones made 20 saves in the loss. The Sharks are still looking for a win this season after four losses.

The only first period goal went to Nashville, at 6:16. Roman Josi scored after making a neutral zone pass to Colton Sissons, who carried the puck into the zone and then passed it back and into the slot. Josi was there to put it away. Assists went to Sissons and Ryan Ellis.

There was just one power play in the first period, a penalty to the Sharks’ Evander Kane for interference. The Predators outshot the Sharks 9-7 in the first.

In the second period, Josi scored again on a mid-period power play. Brenden Dillon was in the box for slashing Filip Forsberg at 9:40. A pass from the corner found Forsberg wide open in the faceoff circle, but his shot went off the post and bounced into the blue paint, where Marc-Edouard Vlasic swept it away, into the slot. Josi was there to shoot it back in for the goal.

The Sharks got their own power play goal at 15:12. Matt Duchene was called for interference on Kevin Labanc. A quick play off the faceoff moved the puck to Burns at the point. He moved along the blue line as if to pass ahead, then moved the puck back to Logan Couture, who took a shot from the point. Evander Kane tipped it in for his first of the year. Assists went to Couture and Burns.

The Sharks killed two of three penalties in the second period, and Nashville did the same. The Sharks outshot the Predators 18-7 in the period.

The Sharks started the third period with some good chances, but it was Nashville who scored at 2:51. A neutral zone breakdown allowed Kyle Turris and Calle Jarnkrok to go in two on one. Turris took the shot to give Nashvillea 3-1 lead. Rocco Grimaldi got the assist.

Nashville made it 4-1 at 7:24. Matt Duchene followed the puck down the slot and made a quick backhand pass across to Forsberg on the wing. Forsberg took the shot and beat Jones on the stick side as he came across. Assists went to Duchene and Mikael Granlund.

Brent Burns got one back for the Sharks at 15:37. The Sharks drew all of the Nashville defense off to one side with their forecheck. The puck slipped out across the ice, where Burns picked it up and shot it in with a hard wrist shot. Assists went to Lean Bergmann and Dylan Gambrell.

Dante Fabbro made it 5-2 with a shot all the way down the ice, in an empty net at 18:19. An assist went to Ryan Johansen.

The Sharks outshot the Predators 10-9 in the third, 35-25 in the game.

The Sharks next play against the Blackhawks in Chicago on Thursday at 5:30 PM PT.

Sharks’ offense + defense don’t = a win in 3-1 loss

mercurynews.com photo: San Jose Sharks goaltender Aaron Dell (30) who saved 30 shots but allowed three in the Sharks third consecutive loss in Anaheim to the Mighty Ducks

~ By Pearl Allison Lo

~ ANAHEIM– It was roughly more of the same all around, including another injury, as the Ducks (2-0-0) handed San Jose (0-3-0) zero points Saturday.

There were giveaways, the first coming from Sharks’ goalie Aaron Dell, the same number one in the goal column and Marcus Sorensen left in the second after 7:27 of ice time.

San Jose Coach Peter DeBoer replied regarding tonight’s effort, “…I thought for three in four nights and being on the road, I thought especially our big guys played really hard…The first goal is a tough one…changes the mindset early. Especially against a guy like (John) Gibson at the other end.”

Anaheim has averaged two goals in their last four games, going back to the preseason and in contrast, the Sharks have only had a goal in each of their last four games.

Special teams followed suit with the way its been with the Ducks killing their last 24 penalties and San Jose 0-for-33 on their power plays. Players postgame had some positives compared to the last two games, “some good shifts,” and the “power play.” The Sharks had four opportunities on the night offensively with five shots during their third power play.

A day after San Jose recalled Jacob Middleton from the San Jose Barracuda, they had to call up Trevor Carrick pregame after Middleton was hurt Friday.

The Sharks gave up their first goal by way of another defensive lapse. The puck went from Dell to Ondrej Kase and Michael Del Zotto. Dell was recovering the puck from the boards.

The fight of the game came at 11:28 between San Jose’s Brenden Dillon and the Ducks’ Nicolas Deslauriers.

Anaheim had a two-man advantage for one second when after Lean Bergmann was called for slashing, Kevin Labanc was whistled for hooking with one second left. San Jose was able to fend off six shots and two missed ones.

The Sharks evened the shot total at 22 in the second period with a 15-10 advantage but found themselves down 3-1.

San Jose had three straight shots to start off the second, one at 33 seconds and two 42 seconds onto the ice.

They then got a power play at 2:22. Dell ended up giving the puck away again, this time to Adam Henrique, but Dell was able to get back in place to block his shot.

The Sharks tied it up when Dillon, who looked to take a shot from the point, instead passed it off to Erik Karlsson who fed Logan Couture. The captain took aim from the right faceoff circle and found a friendly place for the puck at 5:44.

San Jose’s lead lasted just under a minute when Ryan Getzlaf was found without a defender. He skated right up to Dell and made it 2-1 with the puck around Dell’s left side.

Dell ended up making a quality save versus Carter Rowney, but it came as as result of a Mario Ferraro giveaway.

Another injury occurred when Sorensen ended up in the end boards after taking a shot at Gibson.

Henrique ended up having success against Dell when he gave the Ducks their final two-goal lead at 18:48. Featuring tired Sharks, a neutral zone giveaway by Tomas Hertl started the play and then it looked like Labanc gave up midway while defending Henrique, giving him time and space.

Up Next: Karlsson had the most shift ice time with an average of 1:09. San Jose will now have their most rest of the regular season and Evander Kane back as they head to Nashville for the second of their three-game road trip to take on the Predators Tuesday at 5pm.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh: Will four former Sharks be missed from this year’s team?

On the Sharks podcast with Mary:

#1 With former San Jose Sharks Gustav Nyquist, Justin Braun, Joe Pavelski, and Joonas Donskoi no longer with the team, has their absence been a pretty obvious issue with their rough preseason and opening game in Vegas and Friday night at SAP or is it an adjustment with this season’s roster?

#2 The Sharks played the Vegas Golden Knights three times, two in preseason and once in regular season. Was their play in the opener reflective of who this team is? It’s early, but are they trying to fill holes or are they trying to find their chemistry?

#3 The Sharks lost to the Knights by three goals. The Knights came out in the first period scoring twice and once in each of the second and third periods. The Knights looked like the dominant team on Thursday night. Sharks lost by four on Friday night and starter Marty Jones was pulled in the third period for goalie Aaron Dell.

#4 Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer said that the Knights are a fast starting team and the goal is not to get behind early and the Knight are noted for their potent offense. The Knights virtually could have shutout the Sharks on Friday night but got a four goal win 5-1 at SAP Center on San Jose ice.

#5 One thing the Knights haven’t forgotten is how they lost a 3-0 lead in Game 7 of last year’s playoffs and lost the first round of the playoffs.

Golden Knights spoil Sharks’ home opener 5-1

By Jerry Feitelberg

San Jose- It was the second game of the season and the first one at home for the San Jose Sharks Friday night. The Vegas Golden Knights downed the Sharks 4-1 Wednesday night in Las Vegas, and they stopped the Sharks cold 5-1 Friday night in San Jose. The Sharks were outplayed at both ends of the ice and didn’t score until there were just five minutes and fifty-five seconds left to play in the third period. Sharks’ head coach Pete DeBoer had to be disappointed with the play of his team for the first two games of the season. The Sharks play the Anaheim Ducks Saturday night in Anaheim, and they are hoping to recover and get on the winning track.

The Golden Knight scored twice in the first period. With 5:01 played, William Carrier scored the Knights’ first goal of the game. He was assisted by Tomas Nosek and Valentin Zykov. Jonathan Marchessault made it 2-0 with a tip-in at 14:09. The assist went to Shea Theodore.

In the second period, the Sharks allowed two short-handed to goals to fall behind 4-0. The Knights’ Brayden McNabb beat Sharks’ goalie Martin Jones for the score. William Karlsson and Reilly Smith assisted. Tomas Nosek scored his first goal of the night at the 16:50 mark. Brandon Pirri and Mark Stone earned points for the assist.

Aaron Dell started the third period in goal for the Sharks. Nosek scored his second goal of the night with 9:43 played. Mark Stone picked up his second assist of the night. Nosek had quite a night with two goals and an assist. The Sharks finally got on the board with five minutes and fifty-five seconds left to play. Barclay Goodrow put a bach-handed shot past Marc-Andre Fleury for the score. After the goal was scored, three players from each team were involved in a fight. After the penalties were assessed, three Golden Knights, William Karlsson, Nicolas Hague, and Deryk Engelland were given 10-minute gross misconduct penalties. The Sharks’ Joe Thornton and Barclay Goodrow were also given 10-minute gross misconduct penalties. Marcus Sorenson received a two-minute penalty for roughing. The Golden Knights won the game 5-1.

Game Notes- The Golden Knights dominated the Sharks in the first two games of the season. They are starting their third season of play in the NHL, and they appear capable of continuing their excellent play. They went to the Stanly Cup finals in their first year of existence. Last year they were eliminated by the Sharks.  The Sharks have work to do. They lost their captain, Joe Pavelski, to the Dallas Stars. Pavelski scored a lot of goals for San Jose, and he is missed. The Sharks will have to find a way to replace him. While it is early in the season, they cannot afford to go down 0-3 to start the year. They have players that can put the puck past the opponents’ goalie. It’s time for them to get going.

Bad blood holds up in season opener as Knights win 4-1

By Pearl Allison Lo

The match between the San Jose Sharks and Vegas Golden Knights was filled with penalties and the usual physical aspects as the Golden Knights won again 5-1 in front of their home crowd at T-Mobile Arena on Wednesday night.

In the previous two preseason games this year, the Sharks lost 3-1 and 5-1 as their struggles versus goalie Marc-Andre Fleury and Vegas continued.

Special teams went the same way in the three games, with the Knights scoring at least once each time (4 for 11) and the Sharks scoreless throughout (0 for 10).

This was the contest that counted though, as the beginning of the two teams’ fate was in this new season.

Sharks goalie Martin Jones played the whole game, but could not be faulted for all the goals that went past him. It was the first time San Jose was outshot at the end, but by a worse margin at 35-22.

Fleury, meanwhile, continued to hold solid.

Three skaters were missing this time, as the Sharks’ Evander Kane commenced a three-game suspension spanning from the first of three straight games between the teams, San Jose’s (Erik) Karlsson was absent due to personal reasons and the Knights’ Nate Schmidt would end up leaving after only 3:11 time on ice with the first injury of the game.

It was a continuation of the hyped up rivalry as Vegas converted the emotions into two goals within 95 seconds to begin the game. They showed this dominance with goals before the five-minute mark in each period.

The Sharks’ Brent Burns was whistled for tripping at 2:48, and nearly a minute later, Mark Stone capitalized.

10 seconds after Stone hit the post, he scored from the left faceoff circle as the puck glanced off goalie Jones’ left side upon its entry. Stone received the puck after Marc-Edouard Vlasic secured the puck but his pass went through Brendon Dillon’s legs to Stone.

Vlasic and Dalton Prout then missed each other on the return of a back-and-forth in the Knights’ end. William Karlsson picked up the puck and fed Reilly Smith who caught Jones at 5:21 to make it 2-0 while Jones’ legs were in a zigzag position.

26 seconds later, San Jose got their first power play as Brandon Pirri was called for hooking. It only lasted a minute though as Kevin Labanc was called for hooking as well.

An unintentional knee-on-knee collision between Schmidt and the Sharks’ newly crowned captain Logan Couture resulted in the former leaving the ice.

Vegas got another power play at 9:52, but this time, their advantage only lasted seven seconds as Paul Stastny was called for interference.

San Jose then showed their hand at 12:14 as Marcus Sorensen scored off the crossbar as he went above Fleury’s left shoulder to bring along his team.

The first period had the most penalties (five) and a high faceoff advantage (76% to 24%) in favor of the Knights.

Vegas struck with another early goal, this one at 2:12 of the second, as Cody Glass scored his first NHL goal in his debut.

Scuffles off the puck came to a head at 13:44 when Bryaden McNabb was called for roughing on Timo Meier with a punch to Meier’s face. Smith had a shorthanded attempt during the resulting power play.

With 1:02 left in the period, Sorensen played a part again as he tipped in Dillon’s shot. However, it was marked as no goal as Sorensen’s stick was high before the puck found the net. The call held under video review to preserve the Knights’ two-goal margin.

Vegas stretched the shot differential open with 16 to five attempts in the period. The Sharks blocked 11 to four of them.

This time, the third started with a San Jose power play. However, it also resulted in a goal as Burns lost the puck and Dylan Gambrell fell. Burns and Gambrell fell once more as all alone, Jones was forced to choose between the oncoming Karlsson and Smith as Smith scored his second of the night to put up a 4-1 lead at 4:01.

If one looked at the resulting TV shot that showed Meier hunched over, it might seem that was a reaction to the goal but earlier, Meier had taken a puck to the gut from Labanc and he later retreated to the dressing room.

Labanc subsequently ended up taking a high stick from Tomas Nosek at 14:59 and followed Meier to the dressing room too.

Up Next: The teams return for the last game in a row Friday at 7:30 p.m. as the teams return to Northern California.
