SAN JOSE — The San Jose Earthquakes kicked off the 2018 season with a 3-2 win over Minnesota United FC at Avaya Stadium.

The Quakes made solid attempts to score early in the first half. Nick Lima attempted a shot within the 12-minute mark, and Danny Hoesen bumped the ball with his head 15:54, but Minnesota goalkeeper Matt Lampson managed to catch both.

A little over halfway through the first stanza, the Quakes scored two back-to-back goals. Within the 27-minute mark, Hoesen received a pass from Vako Qazaishvili and kicked the ball to the upper right side of the net, too high for Matt Lampson to catch. Almost immediately after, Qazaishvili took a pass from Chris Wondolowski and netted another, sending Lampson into the net with the ball.

Hoesen was loaned to the Quakes last season by FC Groningen (Dutch football club), though, he secured a permanent deal with the team on December 29, 2017.

“I had some space, and I was a little bit surprised with [the goal]. But also credit to the guys around me for making great runs, we’ve been working on that [in practice],” Hoesen said after the match.

In an attempt to retaliate, Minnesota’s Sam Nicholson took a shot at the Quakes’ net within the 43-minute mark, which was saved beautifully by Andrew Tarbell.

After 45 minutes and a two-minute stoppage of play, the score was 2-0 Earthquakes.

Tarbell made a save on a breakaway shot three minutes into the second half, and Hoesen got his second goal of the night within the 59-minute mark when he whizzed the ball past Lampson’s right side, which was too quick for him to catch.

Minnesota made a late comeback, getting their first two goals at the 81 and 84-minute marks, respectively; courtesy of Kevin Molino. Christian Ramirez assisted Molino’s first goal, Ramsus Schuller on Molino’s second.

Quakes head coach Mikael Stahre earned his first MLS win in his first season with the team.

“That was fun,” Stahre said of the win. “At the end of the day, it is about winning, and we did tonight. That is the most important thing.”

GAME NOTES: Jimmy Ockford, a former Seattle Sounder, made his debut with the Quakes when stepped in for Yeferson Quintana, who sustained an injury, almost 10 minutes into the second half. Avaya Stadium sold out for the home opener; a total of 18,000 attendees.

UP NEXT: The Quakes will travel to Kansas City to face the Sporting KC on Saturday, March 17 at 5:30 pm PST.

Thompson, Quakes outduel Kamar, Galaxy in 4-2 win

~ IRVINE — Both San Jose Earthquakes’ Tommy Thompson and Los Angeles Galaxy’s Ola Kamara scored braces, but the Earthquakes prevailed with a 4-2 California Clasico win over the Galaxy at Orange County Great Park Saturday.

It was a new location for the preseason exhibition between the teams.

Thompson scored his first two goals of the preseason in the 54th and 90th minutes, while Kamara scored his second and third goal of the preseason in the 36th and 74th minutes.

San Jose saw familiar faces at the opposite end of the field, in former goalie David Bingham and trialist Cordell Cato. Thompson replied, “Bingham and Cordell are my good friends. They’re great players, so it’s always fun to line up against somebody you have history with, so I enjoyed it out there.”

The four goals for the Quakes were a preseason high for this year, their previous being two. The Galaxy had scored three goals apiece in all their preseason games up until this one.

Los Angeles outshot San Jose in both halves, 10-8 and 12-7 for a total of 22-15.

Quakes’ head coach Mikael Stahre commented, “I’m happy to score four away goals for sure. I think the performance, especially in the second half was good, but in general, I think we conceded too many chances actually. It was an equal game. We were a little bit more effective obviously…I’m okay with this performance, but we have to be better in defense.”

San Jose goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell made five saves in the first half.

One of them included a head on chest save against Romain Alessandrini right before Alessandrini had to jump over Tarbell, followed by another Galaxy attempt off the rebound. Tarbell got his hands on it before the ball went back and was cleared by Shea Salinas in the 31st minute.

Pressure versus the Quakes continued to mount and finally paid dividends. Kamara took a pass from Emmanuel Boateng in front of the San Jose defenders and struck first in the game between Tarbell’s right leg and the near post.

The Quakes came up with a quick response though. After a throw-in to Giovani dos Santos, his pass was intercepted and the kick went to Chris Wondolowski who made a bit of a straightaway shot past a diving Bingham. Ashley Cole tried going into the net to save the ball, but it was too late.

San Jose continued scoring with two swift goals when the first half players combined with second half substitutes, those two being Alashe and Thompson who entered at halftime.

First, Bingham made an initial save as he slid to stop Wondolowski, but the rebound went to Thompson who headed the ball into the net to give their first lead in the 54th minute.

The Quakes then extended their advantage in the 55th minute. Thompson had the initial run to get into Los Angeles’ zone.  Danny Hoesen made the shot and the ensuing rebounds ended off Faita Alashe’s head into the net to make it 4-2.

The Galaxy edged closer when G. dos Santos crossed the ball to Ashley Cole and Tarbell followed to defend Cole. With the net open, Cole kicked the ball across the net, San Jose’s Yeferson Quintana got a touch on it and Kamara found net at the right side for his brace.

Alessandrini nearly tied the game up as he went just wide in the 87th minute.

Thompson tallied his second when Chris Wehan, who entered in the 78th minute, slid the ball from the left as Thompson received and moved the ball forward for the 4-2 score, followed by a celebration. Thompson laughed, “I saw they danced a little bit when they scored, so after I scored the first one I thought ‘man why didn’t I dance’ and so once I got the second one I’m like, ‘Alright. I guess I have to now.’”

The San Jose Earthquakes played some preseason soccer as they took on the Portland Timbers in Tuscon, Arizona, on Wednesday. The match featured three 30-minute segments–each with a different lineup. All players received some playing time on the field.

It was a close call for the Earthquakes at the third minute as Andrew Tarbell made a nice save on Fanendo Adi’s shot. Tarbell continued to make quality saves as the time went by.
The game was scoreless at the end of the first intermission.

The Earthquakes survived another close call. Timbers’ Tommy Thompson and Mo Thiaw worked together to create a shot for Quakes’ Jaymir Hyka, but it went over the San Jose net. Both teams had their own opportunities. The game remained scoreless at the end of the second intermission.

The officials handed Timbers’ Andres Flores a yellow card at the 63rd minute. Shortly after, a superb ball down the wing by the Earthquakes’ youngest player Gilbert Fuentes–15 years old–found fellow teammate Danny Musovski. He defeated his man, but the loose ball skipped across the front of the goal–untouched.

The clock continued to wind down up until the final whistle. The Earthquakes and Timbers settled for a scoreless draw at the end of the third intermission.

Quakes Clinch Playoff Berth With Late Game Score 3-2

SAN JOSE–Just win. That was the situation for the San Jose Earthquakes when Minnesota United came in to Avaya Stadium on a beautiful clear day in San Jose California. The season has been turbulent. A rough start, a manager change, a competitive stretch of play in the latter half of the season, all lead to San Jose being in position to make the playoffs. Two wins against two of the best teams in Major League Soccer gave the Quakes to control their own destiny. Just win. Win and you’re in and the Quakes did it with a one goal victory over Minnesota 3-2.

San Jose came out like they wanted it. Putting pressure on the opposing goalkeeper early, with a lot of urgency. In the 15th minute Danny Hoesen would break free of the back line and put a low ball between the legs of the keeper, igniting the already electric atmosphere. It was far from over though, Minnesota United committed to spoiling the day for San Jose. 20 minutes later, after almost conceding a penalty, the Earthquakes were scored on by a beauty of a goal by Jerome Theisson. With the score tied, San Jose couldn’t afford to let up. A tie game would leave their playoff hopes to chance.

Star man, Chris Wondolowski scored quickly after play resumed. The scales would be equalized again in the 81st minute by United’s Francisco Calvo. With nine minutes to go in regulation, a score was of paramount importance. Then the clock struck 90:00 and it seemed that the game would end up a draw. With their playoff hopes in the air.  Then the magic happened, in the third minute of added time. The ball bounced around the box, as it had so many times unsuccessfully early this season. But this time it paid off and the ball fell to Marco Urena right in front of the goal. And he put it in for the win.

With that goal, the San Jose Earthquakes are in. They are going to the 2017 MLS Playoffs.

Earthquakes fall to Fire 4-1

SAN JOSE — Chris Wondolowski broke the scoreless deadlock late in the match, but the Chicago Fire finished with a 4-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium.

The Fire opened the scoring early in the first half as Djordje Mihailovic kicked the ball in for his first career MLS goal at the 14th minute.

Luis Solignac used the power of his head to put the ball into the net and the Fire took a 2-0 lead at the 39th minute.

The Fire built up two goals and carried a 2-0 lead to the locker room at halftime.

The Fire continued to burn in the second half. Nemanja Nikolic scored at the 48th minute to give his team a 3-0 lead.

The Quakes put themselves in the same dark hole like they did in Washington D.C. last Saturday. Nikolic notched his 20th goal of the season at the 65th minute.

The Quakes were on the verge of being handed a second consecutive shutout loss until Wondolowski hit his 12th goal of the season at the 87th minute. Despite the incredible goal, the Fire continued to hold onto a 4-1 lead until the very end of the match.

Notes
Only one Western Conference side has fewer home losses than the Earthquakes’ one (SKC – 0). The Quakes are also in the midst of a seven-game unbeaten run at home.

Wednesday night marked the first showdown between the Quakes and Fire at Avaya Stadium since the venue’s first-ever regular season match in 2015.

The Quakes have gone 3-0-1 in their last four games following a loss.

The Quakes close out the season with three of their last four games at Avaya Stadium. They’re 8-0-2 in their last 10 home matches, including MLS and U.S. Open Cup contests.

This is the place the Athletics have chosen for their new $500-mil ballpark

new-ballpark.png
A mock-up of what a new Athletics ballpark could look like on the proposed site from Newballpark.org

by Charlie O. Mallonee

The day that all Oakland Athletics fans have been waiting for has finally come. On Wednesday, the Athletics announced that they have selected a site for their new $500-million privately financed baseball only ballpark. That site will be will be known as the Peralta Ballpark Plan.

The location is between Lake Merritt and I-880 and is currently occupied by commercial warehouses, parking lots and the administrative offices for the Peralta Community College District.

Plans call for more than a ballpark on the site

This plan calls for a complete makeover of the area that will include more than the Athletics new facility. It will include:

  • New housing
  • There will be emphasis on affordable housing
  • Small business space will be available
  • Restaurant and retail space that will serve the locals and fans
  • Parks will be a part of the overall development
  • Commercial real estate will also have a place in the plan
  • If this sounds a lot like what happened in China Basin when AT&T Park was built, that is exactly the hopes and plans for this development.

What is the proposed schedule for the project?

LaneyCollegeGoogleEarth-4ae5397a
An aerial shot of the proposal ballpark site
  • Year one: Community Process – the residents, businesses and city government of Oakland have buy into the project in order to make it work.
  • Year two: Permitting (this is California), environmental approval and final ballpark design
  • 2021: Groundbreaking ceremony
  • 2023: Play ball!

What about financing?

  • The ballpark will be privately financed by the Oakland Athletics similar to how the Giants and the Warriors have built or are building their own facilities. Details to follow.
  • What about financing for the remainder of the project? Oakland Athletics owner John Fisher has made his fortune in commercial real estate. He is exactly the type of person who can pull together developers who will want to invest in this type of project, and because Oakland has been an economically challenged city, they are positioned nicely to receive federal and state money to help make a project like this successful.
  • The other factor this project has going for it is the overcrowding in the Bay Area. Oakland is really the last place where commercial office and work space can be developed. It may be last place in the Bay Area where “Transit Oriented Development” that includes work space, affordable housing, shopping and entertainment without needing a car can be made a reality. Would tech companies rather have employees and offices in Iowa or Oakland? It is an easy choice.

What about access to the ballpark?

The Coliseum offers some of the easiest in and out access of any sports complex in America. The new site would offer:

  • BART
  • Access to several freeways
  • The ability to walk and bike from downtown Oakland and surrounding communities
  • AT&T proved you do not have to have a 25,000 car parking lot to make a stadium work in California
Coliseum before Mt. Davis
The Coliseum with its beautiful views before the blight of Mt. Davis

What about the view?

How about a view of Lake Merritt, the Oakland skyline and the Oakland Hills? It might remind you of the great views from the Coliseum before “Mt. Davis” was built.

What would happen to the Coliseum site?

  • The A’s would work with the City of Oakland and the County of Alameda on a plan to develop what is undoubtedly a very valuable piece of land. Remember John Fisher is a major developer of real estate and knows how to bring people together for big projects.
  • The site is ideal for housing, hotel, retail and office development. Remember “Transit Oriented Development”? BART and Air BART are already at that location. That airport is one mile away. The land sits on I-880. It is prime real estate in an area that is running out of room.
  • The other part of the plan for that site is really exciting. The Athletics plan to build a multi-use sports complex and an Urban Youth Academy for baseball and soccer (remember John Fisher also owns the San Jose Earthquakes). This where Major League Baseball can really get involved as part of their initiative to reach out to urban youth.

Oakland Athletics President David Kaval said on Twitter, “A great day for Oakland and the #rootedinoakland”.

This is a day many thought would never come, but it is just the beginning. There is a great deal of hard work to do between now and April 2023.

Quakes lose 2-0 to Dynamo on the road

The San Jose Earthquakes suffered a 2-0 blowout loss to the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday.

The Earthquakes sported their blue and black jerseys in Houston, but were unable to get past the Dynamo in Saturday’s match.

The Dynamo struck first at the 10th minute when Erick Torres Garcia converted on his penalty kick to give his team a 1-0 lead.

David Bingham denied Torres’ free kick outside of the box, but the Dynamo held onto a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.

The Earthquakes had a couple of chances, but were unable to capitalize on them. In the 31st minute, Marco Urena danced around the Dynamo defenders, but wasn’t able to get his shot past Joe Willis.

The officials issued a yellow card to Florian Jungwirth in the 35th minute.

Urena had a great run in the 39th minute as he tried to get in behind the Dynamo’s backline, but was unable to get his shot past the near post.

The Earthquakes trailed the Dynamo 1-0 at halftime.

The Earthquakes started the second half with a substitution. They swapped Shea Salinas in favor of Jahmir Hyka.

Jungwirth made a huge one-on-one tackle to disrupt a Dynamo counterattack in the 48th minute. Urena had another scoring chance in the 59th minute as he sent a shot into the net that went just wide.

The Earthquakes made another substitution in the 64th minute. They replaced Urena with Danny Hoesen. However, their efforts didn’t work.

The Dynamo took a 2-0 lead in the 72nd minute as Alberth Elis completed a shot at the back post.

The Earthquakes made their third substitution just one minute later. Tommy Thompson entered the match after Shaun Francis left.

Things simply didn’t go right for the Earthquakes. Cordell Cato wanted to cut the lead in half. He had a shot that just missed the far post in the 78th minute.

Five minutes of stoppage time were added to Saturday’s match. Ultimately, the Dynamo held on for a 2-0 win over the Earthquakes. Houston outshot San Jose 13-9.

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Earthquakes settled for a 1-1 draw with the Seattle Sounders FC at Avaya Stadium Saturday.

Following a 2-1 loss to NYCFC at Yankee Stadium, the Earthquakes returned to San Jose to host the Sounders in a Saturday night game. Thus, home-field advantage was a positive thing. Also, in honor of Hall of Fame night, 5,000 fans received a free Joe Cannon t-shirt.

The Earthquakes had a couple of chances in the first half. Their first chance came at the 14th minute when Nick Lima set up Anibal Godoy, whose scoring attempt was cleared by Stefan Frei. Two minutes later, Simon Dawkins got a shot off at the edge of six-yard box, but his attempt trickled just past the far post.

“As far as the performance,” Lima recalled. “It was hard. The second half, we weren’t on top of our game, but it was a game where you’d expect toughness from both teams…There were a few moments, like when we went down and gave up a goal. It hurts and it’s hard to deal with, but we fought back and got a goal in return…I almost thought we had a chance to win it, but you know, it’s gotta be a full 90 minutes. It was their game, but we gotta move on and focus on Friday’s game.”

Godoy received a yellow card at the 33rd minute. He also made a promising kick from the left field, but was called offside at the 38th minute.

Krazy George rallied up the crowd at the 41st minute. The Earthquakes had another chance when Marco Urena kicked the ball into the net, but it was denied by Frei.

The match was scoreless after the first half. San Jose held a halftime ceremony to induct Cannon to the Hall of Fame. Cannon’s former teammates also took the time out to congratulate him on his induction.

Once again, the Earthquakes had some chances in the second half. Urena’s kick at the 51st minute had potential, but it was just a bit too high.

The Earthquakes made their first substitution of the match at the 66th minute. Cordell Cato made his first appearance of the season, replacing Dawkins.

Godoy executed a kick from outside of the box at the 71st minute, but it went just wide of the net.

The Earthquakes made another substitution at the 80th minute. Shea Salinas replaced Jahmir Hyka. Then, Fatai Alashe received a yellow card at the 83rd minute.

“There’s a lot of emotion that goes through your head,” Alashe said.

Sounders FC broke the scoreless deadlock in the 84th minute as Nicolas Lodeiro finished a play for a 1-0 lead.

However, the Seattle lead was short-lived. The Earthquakes tied the match 1-1 at the 90th minute after Chris Wondolowski scored his second goal of the season.

“It’s still a bit frustrating that we slipped and gave up two points,” Wondolowski said when asked about the final result. “But it’s nice to have that character and fight and come back and you don’t want to take that for granted.”

Three minutes of stoppage time were added to the clock after two, 45-minute halves. The Earthquakes (2-1-2) wanted to score the go-ahead goal to earn a 2-1 win, but they settled for one point after coming back for a late 1-1 draw with Sounders FC (1-3-1).

“We had a great game regardless,” Shaun Francis said. “We’ll do our best to learn from it and prepare for next Friday’s game.”

“There’s a lot of guys who had good performances tonight,” Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear said. “I felt like both teams had it in them.”
