SAN JOSE — The San Jose Earthquakes (2-9-4) are becoming a second half team as of late. Danny Hoesen scored two goals to help San Jose to a 2-2 draw with the New England Revolution (6-4-6) at Avaya Stadium on Wednesday evening. San Jose is now winless in their past six games.

The Quakes drew first blood in the 19th minute when Danny Hoesen was able to take possession of a ball off a deflection. He dribbled in from 20 yards out and fired a shot past Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner into the left corner of the net. It was Hoesen’s team leading ninth goal of the season.

Diego Fagundez got the equalizer for the Revolution in the 31st minute off a free kick from 18 yards out. Fagundez, a Uruguayan midfielder, was able to bend his shot inside the left corner of the goal beating Quakes goalie Andrew Tarbell for his fifth goal of the season.

Vako had two scoring chances to give San Jose the lead two minutes apart. In the 35th minute, he received a pretty centering feed from Magnus Eriksson from 15 yards out only to have his shot hit the right post. Then, in the 37th minute, he made a nice move dribbling between two New England defenders, but Turner made a great save on his shot that was headed for the right corner.

The Revolution would take the lead on a nice counter attack that started with Kristian Nemeth finding Fagundez in the middle of the pitch who then sent a pass over to the left side to Cristian Penilla who raced in and rifled a shot past Tarbell in the upper right corner of the goal for his sixth goal of the season.

“Mental mistakes,” said Quakes captain Chris Wondolowski on his team’s defensive lapses. “We keep shooting ourselves in the foot. When we’re organized it’s hard to break us down defensively. When we don’t track runners, get too passive, we get punished and rightfully so.”

The Quakes would answer back right out of the gate in the second half when Nick Lima chased down a ball into the right corner and was able to cross the ball into the center of the box were Hoesen was in perfect position to one-time a header past Turner into the lower left corner of the net for his 10th goal of the season and second of the match in the 51st minute.

“When things are not going well, players (can) get selfish,” said Hoesen. “But we want to get out of this thing (winless streak), it doesn’t matter who scores or gets the assists we want to help each other and be happy together.”

The Quakes had a golden opportunity for the game winning goal in the third minute of stoppage time when Hoesen dribbled down the left side of the pitch just inside the defensive box, stopped and crossed the ball into the middle that was just beyond the reach of Jackson Yueill, who just came into the game a minute earlier as a substitution for Eriksson.

Teal Bunbury, whose four-game goal scoring streak came to an end, had a point-blank shot stopped in 59th minute by Tarbell.

Quakes head coach Mikael Stahre didn’t like how his team gave up what he coined “easy goals” to New England near the end of the first half but like the fight his team showed in the second half to come back to tie to the game.

“We came out in the second half like against LAFC,” said Stahre. “We created lots of chances. I think we were better than the opponent, but (the end result) was still a tie. A step in the right direction I think.”

GAME NOTES: Quakes defenseman Shea Salinas missed his second game due to an hamstring injury. Kevin Partida was suspended for the match after earning two yellow cards in the match against LAFC this past Saturday.

Revolution defenseman Antonio Milnar Delamea earned a yellow card in the 71st minute on a sliding tackle on Magnus Eriksson. Quakes defenseman also earn a yellow marker in the 35th minute for unsportsmanlike conduct.

San Jose had 10 corner kicks as opposed to New England’s 9.

Teal Bunbury’s four-game goal streak ended.

Fatai Alashe substituted in for Yefferson Quintana in the 61st minute as Quintana was kicked in the thigh during a sliding tackle attempt earlier in the second half.

New England is now unbeaten in their last five games and their streak is now at six games (3-0-3) against San Jose. This was the third consecutive draw in the last three meetings. San Jose is 10-6-5 at home and leads the overall season 20-14-8 against New England.

Earthquakes lose to LAFC 4-3 in heartbreaker

By Marko Ukalovic and Alexandra Evans

SAN JOSE — In a season where the San Jose Earthquakes (2-9-3) have often been donkey kicked in the gut losing on late goals, it was LAFC’s turn to add their name to the list of heartbreaking losses. LAFC (7-4-3) scored two goals past the 90th minute for a 4-3 comeback victory on Saturday evening at Avaya Stadium.

The Quakes would draw first blood in the 11th minute when captain Chris Wondolowski, who would be involved in three Quakes’ goals, fed a ball over to forward Danny Hoesen along the right corner. Hoesen then crossed the ball right into the center of the box where Vako would one timed the ball past LAFC goalie Tyler Miller into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.

Adama “Dio” Diomande would answer back for the expansion LAFC just four minutes later at the 15th minute. Quakes defenseman Kevin Partida made a bad clearing attempt with a header that went right over to Dio and he wasted no time heading the ball into the back of the net past Quakes goalie Andrew Tarbell for his second goal of the season.

LAFC kept pouring on the pressure as San Jose would be haunted once again by an ex-player. This time Steven Beitashour was the recipient off a ball played in that was deflected off Quakes defenseman Nick Lima that went right on to his foot and scored into an empty net on the far right corner in the 19th minute for his second goal on the season.

In the 39th minute, it looked like the Quakes would get the equalizer when Vako received a ball 25 yards out from goal. In one motion, he turned around and fired a shot on goal that Miller made a brilliant save knocking the ball over the goal to preserve the 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Quakes gained the momentum back just seven minutes in when Wondolowski received a long ball from Florian Jungwirth just past midfield and dribbled down the left side of the pitch before stopping, putting a deke on LAFC midfielder Benny Feilhaber and chipped a perfect ball into the lower right corner for the equalizer in the 52nd minute for his third goal of the season.

Wondo wasn’t done scoring when Miller had a mental blunder and dribbled the ball past the defensive box instead of picking up the ball. Wondo was able to pickpocket the ball off of Miller’s foot and shot the ball into a wide empty net to give the Quakes a 3-2 lead in the 63rd minute. The gift from Miller was Wondo’s fourth goal of the season and his 138th career MLS goal. He is now just seven back of Landon Donovan, the all-time leading goal scorer in MLS history with 145.

“I love scoring goals more than many people here,” said Wondo. “But winning, nothing beats that. I will score zero goals all year if we win.”

Wondo would be forced to come out of the game at the 72nd minute due to a stomach illness that was bothering him throughout the game. He was replaced by Fatai Alashe.

“I was feeling a little under the weather and all of a sudden my lunch came up,” said Wondo. “Almost all over Walker Zimmerman’s shoes. Especially after the third time it came up, I decided it was better (to come out of the game).”

LAFC would not go gently into that good night. In the 90th minute they kept the pressure inside the Quakes zone. Beitashour crossed a ball in from 30 yards out over to a sliding Zimmerman where his initial shot was saved by Tarbell. However Dio was able to crash the net and tap in the equalizer.

LAFC would break the hearts at Avaya Stadium in the seventh minute of stoppage time when Latif Blessing took a ball just to the left of the goal. He crossed the ball back into the middle of the box where Joao Moutinho’s one-timer deflected off Quakes defenseman Jimmy Ockford and past Tarbell into the right corner of the net for the game-winner. It was Moutinho’s first goal of the season.

“This is the hardest defeat of my MLS career,” said Quakes head coach Mikael Stahre, who was obviously frustrated. “It was absolutely crazy (of an ending).”

Despite the Quakes winless in their past five games, Stahre said he was proud of the effort and execution on the offensive side of the ball his team displayed throughout the game.

“I’m really proud of the players commitment and energy,” said Stahre. “They really followed the game plan, especially in the second half.”

GAME NOTES: The Quakes were down a man in the final minute of stoppage play when Partida would earn his second yellow card of the match, resulting in a red card and automatic ejection. He will miss the next match.

Zimmerman and Moutinho earned yellow cards for LAFC.

This was the first ever match between the two clubs as LAFC is playing their inaugural season in the MLS.

The win snapped a four-game winless streak for LAFC. They now have 24 points and are currently in 3rd place in the Western Conference.

The Quakes are in 11th place with only nine points on the season.

Quakes players Anibal Godoy and Harold Cummings missed the game as they are getting ready to play in the World Cup next week in Russia for their native Panama.

LAFC was also were missing four players due to international duty at the World Cup. Omar Gaber, Marco Urena, Carlos Vela, and Laurent Ciman are in Russia playing for their respective countries.

Earthquakes sink in 2-0 loss to Timbers in Fourth Round of U.S. Open Cup

The San Jose Earthquakes paid a visit to the Portland Timbers for the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup at Providence Park on Wednesday night.

The Timbers players walked into their home stadium with what they described as Open Cup swag. Meanwhile, the Quakes called up draft picks Mohamed Thiaw and Kevin Partida just hours before the 7:30 pm kickoff. Thiaw was handed the No. 17.

The Quakes got fired up just moments before the match. San Jose applied some quality pressure early in the first half. This led to a corner for the road team.

Andrew Tarbell appeared to be wide awake, but he missed a shot that went into the net. Jeremy Ebobisse kicked in a goal above Tarbell’s head for his first Timbers goal of 2018. The Timbers were up 1-0 in the 28th minute.

After a sliding challenge, the officials handed a yellow card to Fatai Alashe at the 41st minute. Still, the Quakes didn’t get any offense going in the half.

The Quakes trailed the Timbers 1-0 at halftime. San Jose knew that they had plenty of work to do in the second half. Portland, on the other hand, made a change as Eryk Williamson replaced Jack Barmby.

Barmby found Dairon Asprilla, who was at the right place at the right time. Asprilla kicked the ball into the net for a 2-0 Timbers lead in the 66th minute. Shortly after, Portland, Ore., native Foster Langsdorf entered the match to make his Timbers debut. Langsdorf played college soccer at Stanford University from 2014 to 2017.

Danny Hoesen had a couple of good looks late in the half. However, Hoesen’s attempts went just wide of the net or were caught by Kendall McIntosh.

The Timbers maintained a 2-0 shutout over the Quakes through two halves and three minutes of stoppage time. With the win, Portland advanced to the Round of 16 in the U.S. Open Cup.

Fire grab early lead and hold on to top Quakes 2-1

By Marko Ukalovic

The Chicago Fire (5-7-2, 16 points) took advantage of some sloppy defensive play by the San Jose Earthquakes (2-8-3, 9 points) to jump out to a two-goal lead and then held on for dear life at the end to win 2-1 on Saturday evening at Toyota Park.

The Quakes had a good scoring chance in the 24th minute when Magnus Eriksson started a rush at midfield. He found forward Danny Hoesen, along the left side of the box, but his shot attempt was deflected out of bounds. The ensuing corner kick from Chris Wehan deflected off a Chicago defender and bounced around in the middle of the box before it was cleared away by the Fire.

Ex-Quake forward Alan Gordon continued to haunt his own team in the 29th minute when he was able to head in a ball that Luis Solignac crossed into the center of the box from the right corner. Johan Kappelhof initiated the play and fed the ball over to the Argentinian forward who sailed the ball right on to the head of Gordon who was able to knock it into the goal past Quakes goalie Andrew Tarbell for his fourth goal of the season. It also marked Gordon’s third straight game with a goal.

In the second half, Chicago would get an early goal in the 49th minute. Brandt Bronico would dribble the down the right corner and fed a pretty pass that split past two Quakes defenders to a wide open Aleksander Katai who buried the ball in the upper left corner of the goal to give Chicago a 2-0 lead. It was the fourth goal of the season for the Serbian midfielder.

The Quakes cut the lead in half in the 75th minute when Vako started a rush at midfield, sent a long ball down to the right corner where captain Chris Wondolowski was able chase down. He quickly centered the ball into the box where Hoesen who was covered by a Fire defender one timed the ball with his left leg past Fire back up goalie Richard Sanchez. It was Hoesen’s team-leading seventh goal of the season.

San Jose put on a late push at the end of the game to try to get the equalizer. They had three corner kick opportunities in the last four minutes of the game, including a headed attempt by defenseman Jimmy Ockford that just sailed over the net in the final seconds of stoppage time, but weren’t able to cash in to salvage a point on the night.

GAME NOTES: Quakes defender Shea Salinas was injured in the 12th minute with a leg injury. Fatai Alashe substituted in for him. Fire goalie Patrick Mclain suffered a leg injury in the 44th minute and was replaced by Sanchez.

The Earthquakes have conceded in 18 straight regular season MLS matches. They have not conceded in 18 straight since the 2009 season.

The Earthquakes are 4-16-4 on the road since the start of last season with a -30 goal differential. Only three teams have lost more league road games, and only two teams have a worse road goal differential.

Seven of the Fire’s 18 goals this season have come from set pieces. Only Atlanta United (11) and the New York Red Bulls (eight) have more.

The Fire have lost three of their last four home games. They lost just two home games all of last season.

Chicago Fire leads the all time series 15-10-11. They are 9-2-6 against San Jose at home.

UP NEXT: The Quakes finish off their three game road trip in Portland when they take on the Timbers on Wednesday, June 6th at 7:30 pm PST at Providence Park.

Earthquakes get shut out by Galaxy 1-0 in California Clasico

By Pearl Allison Lo

CARSON, Calif. — It took a while, but Romain Alessandrini became the hero as Los Angeles won in the 82nd minute and defeated the San Jose Earthquakes in the first 2018 California Clasico at the StubHub Center Friday night.

Right after the Quakes made their first substitution in the 82nd minute, Alessandrini, who was tearful after, made the game’s first shot on target and converted.  It would be his third shot, a team-high. The last time Alessandrini scored was March 4th, the first game of the season.

It was close to being a different story though. In the 89th minute, the Quakes’ Danny Hoesen most likely would have had his fourth goal in a row, if goalie David Bingham did not deflect the ball, which hit the crossbar after. That was the only other shot on goal.

It was the Galaxy’s second 1-0 win in a row. The last time San Jose was blanked was May 5th. Both teams were struggling coming into the game in their last five.

Quakes’ coach Mikael Stahre evaluated the game, “…it was quite a good game. I think it was a game with lots of intensity and passion and I think we stood up in a good way and…we deserve at least a tie this evening.

Both teams were sporting the same uniform before the game, in support of the Major League Soccer’s Soccer For All initiative.

The first half saw a total of five shots. Attempts on both sides were matched by opposing players. The Quakes’ Vako had the most shots with three, but all were blocked.

Los Angeles’ Chris Pontius had a just wide header in the seventh minute.

One of Vako’s shot hit Emrah Klimenta in the arm in the 21st minute, but there was no call.

Shots picked up in the second half with a total of nine for the Galaxy and five for San Jose, but the defenses remained stalwart.

Alessandrini fell on his way to the net in the 51st minute.

Los Angeles’ Giovani dos Santos, who was questionable with an undisclosed injury, entered the game in the 75th minute.

When Vako was subbed out, he was the only player for San Jose with a shot, a total of five. At the end, Hoesen had two and Magnus Eriksson had one more.

Game Notes: Changes from last game for the Quakes were Shea Salinas, Vako and Chris Wondolowski put in the starting lineup.

The Galaxy were without a suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Up Next: San Jose will look to right their ship when they face the Chicago Fire Saturday June 2 at 5:30 pm PST.

Earthquakes lose to D.C. United 3-1

By: Ana Kieu

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Earthquakes welcomed D.C. United to Avaya Stadium Saturday night. San Jose looked forward to Retro Night while D.C. hoped to end their two-game losing skid.

Chris Wehan, a winger from Orange, California, made his MLS debut with the Quakes on this cool, windy evening in the South Bay. The Quakes appeared to be ready for the match, but they turned out to be unprepared. Well, at least in the first half, that is.

DC United grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 15th minute. Zoltan Stieber slipped behind the back line to get on the score sheet for the third straight game.

It wasn’t long before DC United doubled their lead. Darren Mattock scored a goal off a pass from Luciano Acosta to make it 2-0 at the 20th minute.

DC United capitalized off a Quakes’ turnover for a 3-0 lead at the 37th minute. Yamil Asad scored the third goal of the game in the midst of excess pressure.

After what appeared to be a countless number of missed shot attempts, San Jose cut its deficit to 3-1 at the 43rd minute. Danny Hoesen scored the Quakes’ first goal of the match.

Hoesen provided a necessary boost to help the Quakes avoid a shutout, but DC United proceeded to take a 3-1 lead to the locker room at the end of the first half.

Both teams returned to the field for the second half. Quakes captain Chris Wondolowski also entered the match, which excited most, if not all, fans in attendance.

Quakes goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell continued making noteworthy saves, including a flawless reaction save at the 57th minute, to fend off what could’ve been a fourth DC United goal.

The Quakes swapped Jackson Yueill in favor of Quincy Amarikwa, who made it clear that it was Quincy time.

Unfortunately, San Jose was unable to get past DC United as they kicked multiple saves that either ended up caught by the opposing goalkeeper David Ousted or just wide of the net.

The Quakes made their third and final substitution at the 82nd minute. Tommy Thompson took Vako’s spot on the field.

After a full 90 minutes plus three minutes of stoppage time, the score remained in the same and DC United defeated the Quakes 3-1.
