That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: A’s Bob Melvin Is a Manager for All Seasons

A’s manager Bob Melvin was awarded the 2018 American League Manager of the Year by the BBWAA (Baseball Writers Association of America), which was a well-deserved award from an A-1 manager and A-1 gentleman. The Oakland Athletics are a very lucky organization to have him as their leader.

Melvin’s A’s won 97 games, that is 22 more games that any other team from 2017 to 2018. This is the third time in his career that Melvin has won it and the second time he has won the award with the A’s in 2012. He beat Alex Cora, whose Red Sox won a team-record 108 games during the regular season, then went on to win the World Series. Cora, also known as “The Pride of Caguas,” finished second. In third place, Tampa Bay Rays’ skipper Kevin Cash, who lost players like Evan Longoria and Jake Odorizzi last season, yet in the toughest division in baseball won 90 games to finish third between the Red Sox and Yankees, which are two of the most resourceful teams anywhere.

Melvin has won it three times: 2007 NL Manager of the Year with the Arizona Diamondbacks, 2012 AL Manager of the Year with the A’s and 2018 AL Manager of the Year again with the A’s. In the history of the A’s, only Melvin (2012, 2018) and Hall of Fame Manager Tony LaRussa (1988, 1992) have won this award. Melvin’s A’s had the lowest payroll in baseball, yet he continued to motivate and teach his young players to respect, listen to, and play hard for him. Last week, the A’s announced they are bringing back all their coaches and that was also good news for Melvin.

We wish Melvin a great offseason and happy holidays to him and his family and hope to see him in Arizona just a few months.

Congratulations, Melvin!

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: A’s Golden Pillars–Chapman and Olson

By: Amaury Pi-González

The dictionary definition of “pillars” is a firm upright support for a superstructure.

The Matt Dudes are those pillars in the corners for the A’s superstructure. Third baseman Matt Chapman and first baseman Matt Olson won their first (of many in the near future) Gold Gloves for their defensive excellence. The A’s infield was one of the best defensively in the game, second-baseman Jed Lowrie, who enjoyed his best season ever, was the runner up to Ian Kinsley of the Angels and Red Sox for the Gold Glove at second base in the AL.

Chapman’s first Gold Glove came as he ended as #1 in all of MLB (at any position) with 29 defensive runs saved. Chapman is so good that he might also win the Platinum Glove Award, which is given each year to the best player in the Majors among all positions. In other words, the best fielder in baseball, period. Since he came to the A’s, we knew of his reputation with the Gold Glove and he showed it this 2018 season. Olson won it on his third season in the Majors and his first full year of play. Olson ended as #1 among all first basemen with 14 defensive runs saved.

While the A’s will announce soon where their new ballpark is going to be build in Oakland, the organization already building a solid team that won 97 games last year who advanced into the playoff as a Wild Card team. Two of those young stars have been awarded with respective Gold Gloves. Chapman and Olson have an innate ability for fielding. Those types of players are adored by pitchers, because they can do stuff with their gloves that pitchers appreciate and many times are the difference between a win or a loss.

Chapman and Olson, who are also very good friends, both deserve the award. Usually there is less controversy when it comes to fielding, and these two showed us why.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: Brewers shut out Dodgers have a shot to win this series; A’s part ways with flagship station

photo from jsonline.com: Milwaukee Brewers’ Jeremy Jeffress (left) and catcher Erik Kratz celebrate after the Brewers shut down the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-0, in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series on Oct. 15, 2018, in Los Angeles.

On That’s Amaury’s Commentary:

#1 The Milwaukee Brewers look like a dominating club. They took game one of the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers then dropped game two, but came back and shutout the Dodgers 4-0 in game three and this is after they swept the Colorado Rockies during the NLDS.

#2 The Red Sox and the Astros are both tied in the ALCS. The Sox tied the series with a 7-5 win and play in Houston tonight.

#3 The Oakland A’s decided to part way wit their flagship station 95.7FM the Game. The A’s said the lack of “promotion and interest” by the station was the reason behind the move.

#4 The A’s are without a flagship station and this is going to be a big concern. Where can they go? They’re considering streaming their games.

#5 Should team president David Kaval and the A’s considered staying at The Game until they find another radio station? Right now, the A’s are nomads for radio.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Don Quixote de la Mancha and the Oakland A’s

By: Amaury Pi-Gonzalez

OAKLAND — The great Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes wrote the unforgettable Don Quixote de la Mancha. A fictional character, Don Quixote de la Mancha, is a middle-aged man from the region of La Mancha in central Spain who read a lot of books and image of enemies he had to “take on” with his lance and sword to defend the helpless the poor and destroy evil. In the mind of Don Quixote, he believed he was a knight with bad eyesight, so he saw the windmills as dragons and wanted to fight the windmills.

The Oakland Athletics had a terrific season, which ended with 97-65 the fourth best record in all of MLB. The A’s went to New York and they didn’t have an imaginary enemy like Quixote, they had a team like the Yankees, who could start the series with Luis Severino, a legitimate Cy Young contender who finished with a 19-8 record and a 3.39 ERA, started 32 games, pitches 191 1/3 innings with 220 strikeouts. The Dominican with a great fastball around 97 and a very effective slider, Severino went four innings, allowed two hits and no runs, and struck out seven. He set the pace for the Yanks’ easy 7-2 victory to eliminate a good and young A’s team. A’s Liam Hendricks, who was 0-1, became the first pitcher ever in MLB postseason history to begin a game, the “opener” as they call it today, without a victory during the regular season. This is not to criticize Hendricks, as he is not a starter. I am sure you would never hire a plumber to fix an electric problem in your house.

If you look at all the teams currently in the playoffs as of today, they all have a starting rotation. Houston, Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Colorado and Atlanta. Some are better rotations, like Houston, Boston, L.A., Milwaukee, Colorado and Atlanta.

The A’s did not have one. During the press conference at Yankee Stadium prior to the game last Wednesday, manager Bob Melvin explained that we have to adjust to the times and he has used the system of the “opener” more than once. A lot has to do that his rotation was wiped out with injuries during the whole season. And I say, folks, basically it is what it is, a manager can only use what he has at hand. Melvin will be the Manager of the Year in the American League, but he is not working as a magician at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas during the off-season.

I am willing to go with the program, and when something works, you do not change it. And yes, sometimes opening a game with a reliever will work. The big thing now is the third time a lineup has seen a pitcher, and how much use the bullpen are now part of the equation. The A’s are not the only team to have used “openers” Tampa Bay and others have.

I went to N.Y. to call that game for the A’s Spanish Radio Network, N.Y. is a special place for baseball, after all, it is where the first baseball game ever took place. The passion runs deep–The Babe,The Clipper, The Mick, Yogi, Munson, Jeter and many others. It is a unique and historical place for this great game. They have won 27 World Series and their fans will let you know if you dare to start and argument about the Yanks. I lived for a couple of years in N.Y. after I was honorably discharged by the US Army in 1968 after I served my time. I attended games at the old Yankee Stadium as well as the old Shea Stadium. For some reason, I always liked the AL.

I was ready and packed to go to Boston for the ALDS, but the baseball Gods didn’t have that in mind. We all should feel good about this A’s team and the way they performed during this season. We can only hope that guys like Melvin are retained to stay with the team for many years and Khris Davis would get the multi-year deal he truly deserves.

A good old friend of mine, who passed away a few months ago, used to tell me “Amaury, most people in life do not get what they deserve.” You can interpret or spin that in any way you want.

Congratulations to the A’s on this 2018 season!

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast from Yankee Stadium: A’s gave it their all all season, but climax goes thud

newsday.com photo: Luis Severino #40 of the New York Yankees reacts after the final out of the fourth inning against the Oakland Athletics during the AL Wild Card Game at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018. Photo Credit: Jim McIsaac

On That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast:

#1 You said it best one game and one and done. All the way to New York and it’s all over for the Oakland after some 162 games in a 7-2 loss at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night.

#2 The Wild Card should be at least two out of three games, but baseball says that’s a longer season.

#3 The Yankees wasted no time in the first inning getting a two-run home run from their star hitter Aaron Judge.

#4 The Yankees got the pitching too. Starter Luis Severino had a no-hitter going through four innings.

#5 Amaury’s last game of the season. Just get your thoughts on the fantastic year the A’s had to get this far.

On the Oakland A’s and AL Wild Card Game podcast with Charlie O:

1) Charlie O, you say we shouldn’t be worried about the starting pitching because it’s going to be all about the relievers in the playoffs. Why?

2) The A’s have decided to go “Bullpenning” on Wednesday night in the Bronx. How do you feel about that approach?

3) What can you tell us about the Yankees starter Luis Severino?

Headline Sports with London Marq: Garoppolo, 49ers look to avoid the INT Sunday; Halos look to be spoilers as A’s chase Yanks; Raiders drop to 0-2 in close battle with Denver; Quakes make a coaching change; plus more

On Headline Sports with London:

#1 The A’s battle the LA Angels this week and the Angels want to be spoilers and try and set the A’s chase of the New York Yankees in the AL Wild Card a peg or two.

#2 The Oakland Raiders played a nail-biter on Sunday, but lost to the Denver Broncos just by one point. Derek Carr looked and threw well, but the Raiders tried as hard as they could and lost their second game of the season, dropping them now to 0-2.

#3 With all the losses mounting, the San Jose Earthquakes fired head coach Mikael Stahre and assistant coach Alex de Crook. The Quakes have won only four games this season. When do you think Stahre should have got fired.

#4 The San Francisco Giants, who are a good 12 games out of first place, and their current hosts, the San Diego Padres, who are some 26 games out, will mostly look at their call ups during this series since the playoffs are dimming each day.

#5 The San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had a rough outing against the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium. The Niners had a 17-point lead, but lost it as their lead collapsed to just three points. If it wasn’t for a holding penalty late in the fourth quarter, the Lions would have been in field goal range or at best scoring range after picking off a Garoppolo pass.
