On Headline Sports podcast with Jessica Kwong:

#1 Jessica, the Atlanta Hawks deliberately benched Trae Young to keep him out of the NBA Cup Game on Nov 12th. The Hawks were fined $100,000 for benching Young. The league said that unless a team seeks approved reason to bench a star player and demonstrate that they would end up being investigated and disciplined.

#2 The Milwaukee Bucks Giannis Antetokounmpo sat out Tuesday’s game against the Miami Heat due to a swelled up left knee. Antetokounmpo had been a question mark leading up to Tuesday’s game but after taking pre game warm ups it was decided he would sit this one out. The Bucks still won the game 106-103.

#3 The Houston Rockets have improved immensely thanks to the help from Alperen Sengun who tallied 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists and picking up his third triple double for the season. The Rockets got a 117-111 win in overtime over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Rockets picked another win this time over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night 122-115.

#4 The Los Angeles Lakers LeBron James and the Phoenix Suns Kevin Durant are ageless as both were trading off dunks in their game on Tuesday night in a game the Lakers lost their third straight game. 127-100. Durant scored 23 and LeBron finished with 18. Although neither were the leading scorer that presence that both players bring give their teammates that much more confidence.

#5 Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Lindsey Harding has put in the hard work to get where she is today. Lindsey started out in the WNBA, played in Turkey and Russia, she was a scout for the Philadelphia 76ers, she was an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings 2022-23, then became a head coach for the G League Stockton Kings 2023-24 and won the coach of the year award and now is an assistant coach at the Lakers. 49ers Fall To Packers At Frigid Lambeau 38-10

It’s a hot potato for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brandon Allen (17) who fumbles the ball against the Green Bay Packers at frigid Lambeau Field in Green Bay on Sun Nov 24, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The San Francisco 49ers (5-6) played a very important game on Sunday taking on the Green Bay Packers (8-3) losing 38-10 in a blowout. After a tough loss last week to the Seattle Seahawks 20-17 they were looking to get back on track but it went sideways from the start of the game falling behind 10-0 in the first quarter.

The team had to play without quarterback Brock Purdy due to a shoulder injury which was a huge blow for the team. Brandon Allen who stepped in for Purdy finished with 17 of 29, one touchdown and one interception.

Christian McCaffrey rushed for only 31 yards and had 37 receiving yards. It has been said that the season really gets going in earnest in week 11 and so the loss last week and now today’s loss in week 12 was a real disappointment especially since they face the 9-2 Buffalo Bills next week.

The game was playing pretty close in the first half of the opening quarter. Mid-way through the first quarter, the Packers scored the first touchdown of the game taking the early 7-0 lead. Jordan Love connected with Tucker Kraft for 11 yards and the Pack was off and running. They extended their lead to 10-0 with 11 seconds left in the first quarter; a 51 yard Brandon McManus Field Goal.

Both teams scored a touchdown in the second quarter. At 6:33 in the quarter Josh Jacobs rushed for one yard and Green Bay had a 17-0 lead threatening to bust this game wide open. San Francisco fought back and finally got up on the scoreboard with 1:02 left in the first half. Brandon Allen connected with George Kittle for three yards and the score at the half was 17-7 in favor of the Packers.

The 49ers were only able to score three points in the entire second half. Jake Moody kicked a 48 yard field goal but that would be it for San Francisco. Jacobs scored his second rushing touchdown of the day punching it in for one yard and a 24-10 Packer lead. After three, Green Bay was leading by the score of 24-10.

A turning point for San Francisco in the second half could have come down to the 87-yard kickoff return by Deebo Samuel which was called back when Eric Saubert was called for holding. The 49ers had wasted a first-and-goal. It all seemed to go downhill from that point on.

The Packers had a productive fourth quarter with Jacobs scoring his third touchdown of the day, another one for one yard and a 31-10 lead. These three touchdowns would match a career high for Jacobs. They would cap this game off with 4:14 left in the game.

Love connected with Malik Heath for three yards and an insurmountable 38-10 lead. A very poor defensive effort from San Francisco was certainly a big part of the final score.

Allen finished the day going 17-29, with one touchdown, two fumbles and one interception. It was a very disappointing day for McCaffrey who rushed for only 31 yards and 37 receiving yards. George Kittle finished with 82 receiving yards and scored the only San Francisco touchdown of the day.

Game notes: Sunday afternoon the 49ers traveled to Green Bay to take on the Packers at frigid Lambeau Field braving the 42 degree temperature with freezing rains at the game. San Francisco is currently in second place in a tight race with the Rams.

The Phoenix Cardinals were holding down first place with a 6-5 record but fell to the Seattle Seahawks Sunday and so first place is knotted at 6-5 apiece. The bottom line is that the 49ers lost Sunday’s game in this tight NFC West.

This weekend is week 12 and would have been the time for San Francisco to turn things around after some tough losses. This was a tough game for the team losing quarterback Brock Purdy to a shoulder injury which is serious enough to keep him out of this game.

There is the hope that he will be able to bounce back in next week’s game against the Buffalo Bills in week 13. A further blow will be the absence of Nick Bosa and Trent Williams. Sunday’s game was a challenge for San Francisco and the loss was a turning point of their season. For sure it was a huge impact.

Next week the 49ers will face another huge challenge facing Josh Allen and the 9-2 Buffalo Bills. They will also be on the road for this game and the team will need Brock Purdy back at the helm. The status of Purdy, Bosa and WIlliams will be updated in the coming week. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for next Sunday night at 5:20 PM.

A Stunning Seattle Final Drive Beats San Francisco 20-17 Ending a Three Year Drought

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (13) walks off the field after being defeated by the Seattle Seahawks at Levis Stadium in Santa Clara on Sun Nov 17, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The San Francisco 49ers (5-5) and the Seattle Seahawks (5-5) met in a highly competitive contest Sunday afternoon. The 49ers led at the half 7-6 but the second half revealed a determined Geno Smith scored a touchdown in the final seconds of the game to take the lead and the eventual win 20-17.

Game recap: Other than a San Francisco touchdown with ten seconds left on the clock in the opening quarter there was not a lot of action offensively. Brock Purdy rushed for a ten yard touchdown taking back the lead that the Seahawks had established mid-way through the first quarter.

Seattle kicker Jason Myers had a 52 yard field goal, the first team to score in the game. San Francisco would end the quarter with the Purdy touchdown and going into the second quarter the 49ers led by the score of 7-3.

The only score in the second quarter was a Seattle field goal, a 57 yard Myers kick. The score at the half was 7-6 with San Francisco leading. The first half was a highly competitive one between two evenly matched teams.

There had been only two field goals and one touchdown in the first thirty minutes of play and both teams would be looking for a whole lot more offense in the second half; that one huge play that will break this game open.

San Francisco needed to figure out more ways to score more points in the second half of this low-scoring game, and keep Seattle guessing. The Seahawks had not found the end zone in the first half something that they needed to do if they had any chance of coming out with a win in this game.

San Francisco would need to get their offensive groove going in the second half; they especially wanted to see the dangerous running back Christian McCaffrey get cooking. The San Francisco defense gave their offense an amazing opportunity in the opening minutes of the third quarter intercepting the ball near the Seattle 27 yard line.

The 49ers were poised to extend their lead. San Francisco, was having their share of penalties some of them ill-timed infractions. They had back to back penalties after the interception and were unable to find the end zone. They had to settle for a 33 yard Jake Moody field goal extending their lead 10-6.

The Seahawks got a great drive going following the San Francisco field goal with quarterback Geno Smith mixing it up with some plays through the air as well as on the ground. Seattle drove down into the red zone and had a first and goal inside the San Francisco five yard line.

The Seahawks Kenneth Walker punched the ball into the end zone, the extra point was good and the Seahawks had taken back the lead 13-10. After throwing the interception earlier, Smith was undeterred in this second drive of the third quarter.

San Francisco fought back driving into Seattle territory led by McCaffrey and Purdy really got the passing game going. Inside the red zone, San Francisco committed their eighth penalty but came right back taking up residence on the Seahawk five yard line. The possession culminated in a Purdy to Jauan Jennings three yard pass, the touchdown, with Jennings waltzing into the end zone through a huge gap taking a 17-13 lead with 9:33 left in the game.

The Seahawks put together a great drive having a fourth and one on the San Francisco 37 yard line but could not convert and San Francisco took over on downs with under four minutes left on the clock.

The 49ers defense had really stepped up when it was needed most. San Francisco needed a couple of first downs and some solid clock management to finish off Seattle. The 49ers stalled on the Seattle 42 yard line forcing a punt and the Seahawks had renewed life.

Seattle put together a stunning drive with Smith running the ball into the end zone with 12 seconds left in the game taking a 20-17 lead. The Seahawks had beaten the 49ers for the first time in three years.

Both quarterbacks had done a great job spreading the ball out throughout this game This was a hotly contested game from start to finish with San Francisco coming up just short. Purdy finished the game with 21 of 28 passes, 159 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was sacked twice. McCaffrey rushed for 79 yards and 27 receiving yards. Jennings had 91 receiving yards in the loss.

Seattle was more explosive in the second half of the game than San Francisco. Smith had a very productive game finishing with 25 of 32 passes for 221 yards, and one interception. He also rushed for 29 yards, some of those yards coming in the final seconds of the game. Kenneth Walker III rushed for 54 yards and Jaxon Smith-Njigba had 110 receiving yards. The payback that the Seahawks had been looking for became a reality.

Game notes: Sunday afternoon the 49ers were looking for their third consecutive win as they took on the Seahawks at Levi’s Stadium. McCaffrey continues to work back into the system after his long layoff. After a slow start this season, San Francisco had turned things around and but just couldn’t get past the Seahawks Sunday even though they had some vastly improved offense and defense.

Seattle came into this game following a bye in week ten and a loss to the Los Angeles Rams 26-20 in week nine. Seattle opened the season with a bang winning three games in a row over the Broncos , the Patriots and the Dolphins but stalled out losing to the Lions, the Giants and a loss to the 49ers on a Thursday Night Football matchup back on October 10th.

Seattle got a little payback in this game. San Francisco had beat the Cowboys 30-24 in week 8, followed by a bye in week nine and then a 23-20 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Niners couldn’t dominate Seattle like they did earlier this season in this game. San Francisco had beaten the Seahawks for the past three years but that string ended Sunday.

The 49ers will take on the Green Bay Packers in a week 12 matchup. Kickoff for that game is slated for 1:25 PM.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez: Raiders offensive line banged up; Minshew opportunities limited by Dolphins pass rush

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Gardner Minshew (15) had to duck and dodger receivers all day against the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Cafe Stadium in Miami on Sun Nov 17, 2024 (AP News photo)

On the Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich:

#1 The Las Vegas Raiders just couldn’t get any scoring going in all four quarters and not enough to stay in step with the Miami Dolphins getting beat 34-19 dropping their sixth straight game at Hard Rock Cafe in Miami.

#2 The Raiders with this loss have given up 75 points in their last two games 34 points today against the Dolphins and last week 41 points to the Cincinnati Bengals. The defense has to be exhausted and the offense is giving up to many fourth downs.

#3 Rich the fourth quarter today really ate up the Raiders defense the Dolphins were unstoppable scoring 17 points to putting much put this game out of reach with the Dolphins De’Von Achane carrying for two yards for a touchdown at 10:37, Jonnu Smith at 3:19 caught a 57 yard pass to make it 31-19 and at Miami kicker Jason Sanders booted a 46 yard field goal at 1:55 for the 34-19 final.

#4 Raiders quarterback Gardner Minshew continues to get frustrated and just couldn’t convert enough scoring to catch the Dolphins. Minshew 30-43 for 280 yards and two touchdowns. Minshew was having trouble staying in the pocket and getting protection.

#5 Up next for the Raiders the Denver Broncos at Allegiant Stadium next Sunday for a 1:05pm PST kickoff against the Denver Broncos and quarterback Bo Nix. The Broncos have been hovering around .500 and played the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Can you see the offensive line recovering for the Raiders and being able to hold the Broncos pass rush so that Minshew could get some time to pass the ball?
