Earthquakes drop 2-1 decision to NYCFC

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Earthquakes returned home for a redemption match, hosting NYCFC at Avaya Stadium Saturday night.

In case you missed it, San Jose dropped a 3-2 decision to Sporting KC at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Mo., on March 17.

The Quakes had a lot to look forward to coming into this nationally televised match against NYCFC on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and TSN2.Β Vako Qazaishvili returned to the field and these two teams were just moments away from competing in a West Coast vs. East Coast match.

The Quakes didn’t waste any time getting on the board as Yeferson Quintana got his first goal as a member of the Blue and Black at the third minute of the first half. Just moments later, Quintana had a good look on the field.

Oh yeah, and Krazy George was in attendance. In case you didn’t know, Krazy George is the world’s most famous cheerleader as well as the creator of the “wave.”

For the second time in one week, Vako made a powerful kick that went just above the opponent’s net at the 31st minute of the half in an attempt to be featured on SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays on ESPN.

The Quakes held a 1-0 lead over NYCFC at halftime. Shots were 5-3 in favor of San Jose.

NYCFC’s Anton Tinnerholm scored his second career MLS goal to even the score 1-1 at the 49th minute of the second half.

Quakes captain Chris Wondolowski applied pressure on the NYCFC backline at the 54th minute of the half, but the score remained tied 1-1.

NYCFC took a 2-1 lead when Maxi Moralez scored the go-ahead goal at the 60th minute of the half.

Harold Cummings was kicked by an NYCFC player at the 75th minute of the half. Cummings was able to pick himself up off the ground, but he was shook up pretty bad, so Quincy Amarikwa stepped onto the field to replace Cummings.

There was six minutes of stoppage after these two teams battled it out in two halves. Vako kicked a goal into the net at the 95th minute, but a NYCFC defender blocked the kick from entering the net.

The Quakes lost to NYCFC 2-1 in full time.

Landon Donovan returns to San Jose, Earthquakes fall to Club LΓ©on 1-0

SAN JOSE — For their third match of the 2018 season, the San Jose Earthquakes took on the visiting Club LΓ©on, to whom they fell 1-0.

Quakes captain Chris Wondolowski came close to a breakaway goal just over a minute into the first half before he was called offsides. After receiving a smooth pass from Quincy Amarikwa, Magnus Eriksson attempted a shot with much force at the net at the seventh minute, which went over the bar. LΓ©on’s Landon Donovan, a former Earthquake, broke the scoring silence at the 19-minute mark when he struck the ball past Quakes starting goaltender Andrew Tarbell.

The board remained scoreless for the remainder of the match with both teams having subbed out several starters from the 46th minute to the 74th minute and received numerous good scoring chances accompanied by good defense. LΓ©on took home the 1-0 victory.

Donovan, who scored the game’s only goal (the game-winner), is known to be the greatest American men’s soccer player. He was on a loan with San Jose from 2001 to 2004 and helped lead the Quakes to MLS Cup wins in 2001 and 2003.

The Quakes will return to Avaya Stadium on Saturday, March 31 to face New York City FC. Kick-off is at 4:45 p.m. PDT.Β

Earthquakes unable to come back as they lose to Sporting KC 3-2

By: Eric He

The San Jose Earthquakes were in the match until the end, but could not find a late equalizer in a 3-2 loss to Sporting Kansas City at Children’s Mercy Park on Saturday night.

Sporting KC held much of the possession throughout the match and outshot San Jose, stats, which were reflected on the scoreboard.

After halftime, with the score knotted at 1-1, Sporting KC took control. Graham Zusi put home a spectacular shot from long range and then Felipe Gutierrez connected in the 68th minute to put Kansas City up 3-1.

Chris Wondolowksi brought the Earthquakes closer in stoppage time, but San Jose ran out of time as Kansas City ran out the clock.

The home team opened the scoring on a penalty kick after Johnny Russell was tripped by San Jose goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell. Illie Sanchez nailed the kick past Russell to give Kansas City a 1-0 lead.

But San Jose would equalize in the 32nd minutes, as Nick Lima sent a cross on the rush andΒ Valeri Qazaishvili punched it in the net after a few shots.

Sporting KC had 12 corner kicks to three for the Earthquakes, who drop their first game of the season after winning their home opener two weeks ago.

Hoesen scores two goals, Earthquakes kick off 2018 with 3-2 win over Minnesota United FC

By Alexandra Evans and Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Earthquakes kicked off the 2018 season with a 3-2 win over Minnesota United FC at Avaya Stadium.

The Quakes made solid attempts to score early in the first half. Nick Lima attempted a shot within the 12-minute mark, and Danny Hoesen bumped the ball with his head 15:54, but Minnesota goalkeeper Matt Lampson managed to catch both.

A little over halfway through the first stanza, the Quakes scored two back-to-back goals. Within the 27-minute mark, Hoesen received a pass from Vako Qazaishvili and kicked the ball to the upper right side of the net, too high for Matt Lampson to catch. Almost immediately after, Qazaishvili took a pass from Chris Wondolowski and netted another, sending Lampson into the net with the ball.

Hoesen was loaned to the Quakes last season by FC Groningen (Dutch football club), though, he secured a permanent deal with the team on December 29, 2017.

β€œI had some space, and I was a little bit surprised with [the goal]. But also credit to the guys around me for making great runs, we’ve been working on that [in practice],” Hoesen said after the match.

In an attempt to retaliate, Minnesota’s Sam Nicholson took a shot at the Quakes’ net within the 43-minute mark, which was saved beautifully by Andrew Tarbell.

After 45 minutes and a two-minute stoppage of play, the score was 2-0 Earthquakes.

Tarbell made a save on a breakaway shot three minutes into the second half, and Hoesen got his second goal of the night within the 59-minute mark when he whizzed the ball past Lampson’s right side, which was too quick for him to catch.

Minnesota made a late comeback, getting their first two goals at the 81 and 84-minute marks, respectively; courtesy of Kevin Molino. Christian Ramirez assisted Molino’s first goal, Ramsus Schuller on Molino’s second.

Quakes head coach Mikael Stahre earned his first MLS win in his first season with the team.

β€œThat was fun,” Stahre said of the win. β€œAt the end of the day, it is about winning, and we did tonight. That is the most important thing.”

GAME NOTES: Jimmy Ockford, a former Seattle Sounder, made his debut with the Quakes when stepped in for Yeferson Quintana, who sustained an injury, almost 10 minutes into the second half. Avaya Stadium sold out for the home opener; a total of 18,000 attendees.

UP NEXT: The Quakes will travel to Kansas City to face the Sporting KC on Saturday, March 17 at 5:30 pm PST.

Thompson, Quakes outduel Kamar, Galaxy in 4-2 win

~ By Pearl Allison Lo

~ IRVINE — Both San Jose Earthquakes’ Tommy Thompson and Los Angeles Galaxy’s Ola Kamara scored braces, but the Earthquakes prevailed with a 4-2 California Clasico win over the Galaxy at Orange County Great Park Saturday.

It was a new location for the preseason exhibition between the teams.

Thompson scored his first two goals of the preseason in the 54th and 90th minutes, while Kamara scored his second and third goal of the preseason in the 36th and 74th minutes.

San Jose saw familiar faces at the opposite end of the field, in former goalie David Bingham and trialist Cordell Cato. Thompson replied, β€œBingham and Cordell are my good friends. They’re great players, so it’s always fun to line up against somebody you have history with, so I enjoyed it out there.”

The four goals for the Quakes were a preseason high for this year, their previous being two. The Galaxy had scored three goals apiece in all their preseason games up until this one.

Los Angeles outshot San Jose in both halves, 10-8 and 12-7 for a total of 22-15.

Quakes’ head coach Mikael Stahre commented, β€œI’m happy to score four away goals for sure. I think the performance, especially in the second half was good, but in general, I think we conceded too many chances actually. It was an equal game. We were a little bit more effective obviously…I’m okay with this performance, but we have to be better in defense.”

San Jose goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell made five saves in the first half.

One of them included a head on chest save against Romain Alessandrini right before Alessandrini had to jump over Tarbell, followed by another Galaxy attempt off the rebound. Tarbell got his hands on it before the ball went back and was cleared by Shea Salinas in the 31st minute.

Pressure versus the Quakes continued to mount and finally paid dividends. Kamara took a pass from Emmanuel Boateng in front of the San Jose defenders and struck first in the game between Tarbell’s right leg and the near post.

The Quakes came up with a quick response though. After a throw-in to Giovani dos Santos, his pass was intercepted and the kick went to Chris Wondolowski who made a bit of a straightaway shot past a diving Bingham. Ashley Cole tried going into the net to save the ball, but it was too late.

San Jose continued scoring with two swift goals when the first half players combined with second half substitutes, those two being Alashe and Thompson who entered at halftime. Β

First, Bingham made an initial save as he slid to stop Wondolowski, but the rebound went to Thompson who headed the ball into the net to give their first lead in the 54th minute.

The Quakes then extended their advantage in the 55th minute. Thompson had the initial run to get into Los Angeles’ zone. Β Danny Hoesen made the shot and the ensuing rebounds ended off Faita Alashe’s head into the net to make it 4-2.

The Galaxy edged closer when G. dos Santos crossed the ball to Ashley Cole and Tarbell followed to defend Cole. With the net open, Cole kicked the ball across the net, San Jose’s Yeferson Quintana got a touch on it and Kamara found net at the right side for his brace.

Alessandrini nearly tied the game up as he went just wide in the 87th minute.

Thompson tallied his second when Chris Wehan, who entered in the 78th minute, slid the ball from the left as Thompson received and moved the ball forward for the 4-2 score, followed by a celebration. Thompson laughed, β€œI saw they danced a little bit when they scored, so after I scored the first one I thought β€˜man why didn’t I dance’ and so once I got the second one I’m like, β€˜Alright. I guess I have to now.’”

Up Next: San Jose conclude their preseason with a closed-door matchup versus their Reno USL affiliate again on February 22 at Avaya Stadium.
