Earthquakes power past Sporting KC 4-1 for second win

By Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Danny Hoesen provided some early fireworks for The San Jose Earthquakes and they never took their foot off the gas pedal in a dominating 4-1 victory over the Sporting KC on Saturday evening at Avaya Stadium.

The Quakes have won two out of their last three after starting 0-4 on the season. San Jose improved to 1-2 at home on the season while snapping Sporting KC’s five-game unbeaten streak as the visiting team continued to be winless on the road.

San Jose (2-5) drew first blood early in the first half. Anibal Godoy sent in a long ball from just inside the midfield line over to Danny Hoesen right at the D. The pass split two defenders as Hoesen took ball of the chest shot and won the battle between two KC defenders and finished off the play with a shot into the lower left side of the goal for his second goal of the season in the sixth minute.

Hoesen scored his second of the night six minutes later after taking a chip pass from Jackson Yueill down the left sideline. Hoesen dribbled in, deked out a defender and then out waited Sporting KC’s goalie Tim Melia and shot the ball off the body of Yohan Croizet into the back of the net for his third goal of the season in the 12th minute.

“It’s easy to say after you score two goals, but I always felt free,” said Hoesen. “The coach has always had confidence in me. It depends on how you feel on the day, how much you can run, how much can you do for the team. Sometimes it’s good and sometimes it’s bad.”

The goal was initially ruled offside by the right corner linesman, but after VAR review, the goal counted as the Quakes doubled their lead to 2-0.

Sporting KC (2-2-3) had a golden chance to cut the lead in half in the 26th minute when Krisztian Nemeth was awarded a penalty kick. However, his shot resembled more a field goal attempt as he shot ball very high over the net.

The Quakes dictated the tempo of play in the first 45 minutes as they controlled possession for much of the half generating four scoring chances.

“The goals were important for the confidence of the players,” said Quakes head coach Matias Almeyda. “I think it was an intelligent game knowing we couldn’t give them any advantage, so our players understood what we wanted. We had patience to control the ball and determine the moment and the place when we should pressure to recover the ball and from there start our counter-attacks. But I think the players did a good job understanding the game plan.”

The second half was a carbon copy of the first. In the 46th minute, Magnus Eriksson led the attack right from the opening kickoff. He found Shea Salinas along the left sideline. Salinas dribbled inside the box, and from 15 yards out, chipped in a shot over Malia into the upper right corner of the goal for his second goal of the season.

Eriksson completed the scoring for San Jose in the 61st minute. Nick Lima led a rush into the box and then tried a give and go with Eriksson, but Eriksson’s return pass was deflected right back to him. With Malia committed to the left side of the goal, the Swedish midfielder chipped the ball back into the lower right corner of the net for his second goal of the season.

“Build on tonight,” said Lima. “Tonight gives us confidence, but we build on it, we go back to the training pitch with not much time but whatever it may be, we continue to work things out communication-wise.  That’s a huge part of it and we get a little better for the next game.”

Sporting KC finally got on the board when Florian Jungwith was called for a foul inside the Quakes box which resulted in a penalty kick. This time Felipe Gutierrez cashed in on his opportunity for his second goal of the season.

Daniel Vega made six saves on seven shots to earn the victory.

GAME NOTES: Quakes defenseman Goram Kashia did not play due to a lower leg injury.

Wondo Watch: Chris Wondolowski came in the match as a substitute in the 80th minute but was not able to score. He currently sits one goal behind Landon Donovan for the all-time goals record in MLS history.

Danny Hoesen scored his 19th and 20th of his MLS career. Hoesen’s goals came in the sixth and 12th minutes of the match, the second earliest brace in Quakes history (Dwyane De Rosario — 9/27/03; 11 minutes).

Hoesen’s brace marked his third multi-goal match with the Earthquakes and first since June 13, 2018 (2 goals vs. NE). The last Quakes player to score two or more goals in a single match was Vako vs. FC Dallas on Aug. 29, 2018.

Salinas scored his second goal of the season and 15th of his MLS career. The last time Salinas scored multiple goals in a single season was 2015 (3).

Anibal Godoy tallied his second assist of the season and seventh of his MLS career.

Jackson Yueill tallied his first assist of the season and fifth of his MLS career.

Only the LA Galaxy (9) and Seattle Sounders FC (7) have earned more points than San Jose’s six over their last three matches.

The Earthquakes now hold a 25-26-8 all-time record against Sporting Kansas City.

San Jose is now 17-6-7 all-time against Sporting Kansas City at home.

The Quakes are now 3-2-1 against SKC all-time at Avaya Stadium.

Gianluca Busio was injured in the 25th minute which ended his three game goal streak.

Christian Espinoza was issued a yellow card the second minute into stoppage time into the first half. Godoy received a yellow card at the end of the first half for un-sportsman like conduct and will miss San Jose’s next match.

UP NEXT: The Quakes travel to Seattle to take on the Sounders on Wednesday, April 24 at 7:30 pm at Century Link Field.

Earthquakes fall to Dynamo 2-1

By: Ana Kieu

The San Jose Earthquakes had hoped to make it two wins in a row at the BBVA Compass Stadium against the Houston Dynamo on Saturday. The Quakes last shutout the Portland Timbers 3-0 at Avaya Stadium last Saturday.

The Quakes’ starting lineup featured Daniel Vega, Marcos Lopez, Florian Jungwirth, Harold Cummings, Tommy Thompson, Jackson Yueill, Anibal Godoy, Shea Salinas, Cristian Espinoza, Magnus Eriksson and Danny Hoesen.

The game was underway in Houston and the Quakes applied pressure on the Dynamo in the early stages of the game. Daniel Vega rejected Alberth Elis’ shot from inside the box at the sixth minute. Also, there was some hostility as Maynor Figeroa was issued a yellow card at the 31st minute.

The real action didn’t occur until the 41st minute when Cristian Espinoza nearly kicked in a goal. However, Espinoza failed to do so and the game remained in a scoreless deadlock at the end of the first half.

There was a weather delay in Houston, and as the Quakes waited for the storm to pass, the team tweeted a shoutout to the handful of Black and Blue fans who made it to the game. The game resumed at 2:22 pm PT.

The Quakes were back at it at the 46th minute. The Quakes’ happiness didn’t last long as Alberth Elis scored a goal to make it 1-0 Houston at the 52nd minute.

The game was tied 1-1 when the Jackson Yueill kicked a goal into net from outside of the box at the 55th minute. But the Dynamo rained on the Quakes’ parade when Tomas Martinez made it 2-1 Houston at the 60th minute.

Shortly after, the Quakes broadcast switched from Univision to Univision Deportes Network. The Quakes then made their first substitution of the game. Jackson Yueill exited the game and Chris Wondolowski entered the game.

Things got hectic late in the game. Marcos Lopez was issued a red card at the 87th minute. That led to the Quakes’ second substitution of the game. Florian Jungwirth exited the game and Nick Lima entered the game. But it was too little, too late as Lima is a defensive starter and was supposed to be in the starting lineup. The Quakes lost to the Dynamo 2-1.

The Quakes return home to host Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, April 20 at 7:00 pm PT.

#1 The Virginia Cavaliers are the college basketball champs of the NCAA. How surprising, what expectations, were as surprised and a game which the Cavs won it in overtime?

#2 It’s the ankle again. The Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry, who hurt his ankle before turned his ankle on Tuesday night in New Orleans in the Warriors’ 112-103 win over the Pelicans. Head coach Steve Kerr says Curry should be alright for game one of the playoffs.

#3 The San Jose Sharks are coming off three wins of their last five games. The Sharks’ Erik Karlsson returned from his injury and Evander Kane looks like he’s got that old spark again. How do the Sharks look going into game one of the playoffs on Wednesday night?

#4 StubHub has announced that tickets could be had for as low as $6 in the lower stands at Oracle Park. The Giants are assured that their attendance would not drop no lower than 26,000 because they have sold season tickets to guarantee that crowd number. The Giants drew 28,000 their smallest crowd in recent memory against the Padres on Monday night. Lastly, it should be noted the Giants didn’t lay an egg on Tuesday night, getting six runs in the bottom of the second and a large lead to get past the Padres to pull within four games of .500. The Giants dropped Wednesday’s game 3-1 and fell five games below .500 at 4-9.

#5 The San Jose Earthquakes were able to pull off a huge win in a 3-0 shutout over the Portland Timbers on Saturday at Avaya Stadium. It was the Quakes first win of 2019 and our very own London Marq was there.

Earthquakes shutout Timbers 3-0 for first win of season

By: London Marq

SAN JOSE, Calif. — After being trounced five goals to none in their last match by the table-topping Los Angeles Football Club, the San Jose Earthquakes found themselves four games into the regular season without a win. Without doubt it has been a disappointing start to this season and the Quakes hope to make some winning adjustments as they hosted the Portland Timbers at Avaya Stadium Saturday. Both Portland and San Jose entered play without win, providing both teams with an opportunity to get their first three points.

Right out of the gate, San Jose looked like a different team as they found each other for offensive chances early and demonstrated better communication than we’ve seen from them so far this year. The improvement in play had Portland on the back foot early. San Jose was having success moving the ball deep in the wide areas and in the 15th minute Cristian Espinoza put dribbled the ball down the goal line and passed the ball into the goal box where Shea Salinas was waiting for the easy score to put the Quakes up 1-0 early.

Portland responded by being more physical on the ball and San Jose matched their intensity. Between the 26th and 28th minutes, a yellow card was handed out to both teams. The game would remain throughout as 29 total fouls and four total yellow cards were dealt by the referees.

San Jose would continue to be effective in the wide offensive areas. In the 33rd minute, Quakes striker Danny Hoesen slammed the ball into the net after Timbers goalkeeper Jeff Attinella had the ball bounce off his feet.  It was Hoesen’s first start of season and with it came his first goal of the campaign as well. The Quakes weren’t done scoring either. Just a minute later, midfielder Cristian Espinoza made a run after intercepting a pass and slotted the ball low into the near corner right past Attinella.

Portland would have their chances to bulge the net as well. In the 55th minute, Portland was awarded a penalty after a handball in the box. Portland striker Diego Valeri would step up to take it, but Quakes goalie Daniel Vega would be equal to it and keep the Timbers scoreless. San Jose was a few inches away from scoring a fourth goal by hometown favorite Nick Lima, but the goal was called back after a replay review ruled that Espinoza was offsides.

No goals would be scored in the second half and the Quakes would win their first match of the season. Quakes coach Matias Almeyda and the team were all smiles during the postgame activities. Hoesen expressed that it felt great to get the win, but there was still much work to do. Almeyda made some excellent adjustments starting three players–Hoesen, winger Shea Salinas, and defender Florian Jungwirth–for the first time this season. With any luck, the adjustments and success will translate when they are on the road next week, taking on the Houston Dynamo.

Final: San Jose defeated Portland 3-0.

Up Next: San Jose takes on Houston next Saturday at 12 pm PT.

Headline Sports podcast with London Marq: Ice meltdown in Vancouver–Sharks can’t answer Canucks’ 3 goals in third period; Quakes’ best game in 0-0 draw against Colorado so far; plus more

On the Headline Sports podcast with London:

#1 In one that you can call just a big meltdown, the San Jose Sharks started a two-game road trip in Vancouver Tuesday night, had a 2-1 lead and looked like they might actually win this one against the Canucks, but all for not as the Canucks scored three unanswered goals to hand San Jose its ninth loss in 10 games 4-2.

#2 The San Jose Earthquakes are a team that is all shook up. They have not won one a game yet this season and have played six games and their best game was against Colorado in a 0-0 draw. London tells us from he has seen of the Quakes what the problem is?

#3 The San Francisco Giants have shown some improvement on the current road trip taking the first game against the Dodgers on Monday night 4-2, thanks to Brandon Belt’s home run to help pace the win. On Tuesday night, the Giants lost by a run, but it’s been something to look forward to after they struggled in San Diego losing three out four.

#4 The Oakland A’s are getting plenty of pitching they got a 7-0 shutout over the World Champion Red Sox on Monday and then on Tuesday they got a 1-0 shutout with great A’s starting pitcher Mike Fiers and A’s reliever Blake Treinen.

#5 The Sacramento Kings just couldn’t do anything with James Harden and the Houston Rockets on Tuesday night in Golden One Center. Harden put away 36 points and he was again a scoring machine in a 130-105 win.

Earthquakes shut out by LAFC 5-0

By: London Marq

SAN JOSE–Major League Soccer’s best, currently in the form of the glamorous Los Angeles Football Club, travels north to battle the bottom ranked San Jose Earthquakes. Though San Jose bested LAFC in the preseason, it has been a tale of two different clubs since the season began. LAFC has a league-best 10 points entering play with 10 goals to their cause versus an Earthquakes team that has yet to earn a point through their first three matches. San Jose, who have only managed two goals on the season, looked to create a rivalry with their southern neighbors under the guidance of head coach Matias Almeyda.

The first half saw the Earthquakes struggle to find any cohesion as LAFC applied constant pressure in every sector of the pitch. The fullbacks struggled to advance the ball into the midfield, and it would be a problem for San Jose from the earliest moments of the game. In the eighth minute, LA forward Carlos Vela would steal the ball from a defender and knock it into the area of the Quakes goalie Mario Vega. Vega attempted to clear the ball out of the box and whiffed, leaving the crowd stunned and the goal wide open. Vela would score the first goal of the match.

Mario Vega’s whiff was only the beginning of his very long day. Though he made several saves and blocks, Vega found himself one-on-one with the opposing strikers and back line offered little resistance. Carlos Vela would go on to score twice more, including a beautiful arcing shot from outside the box into the far corner in the 66th minute to complete his first MLS hat trick. LAFC also had goals from Steven Beitashour and Diego Rossi in the 26th and 68th minutes, respectively.

For Almeyda and the Quakes, it’s back to the drawing board. Frustrations mounted in the second half as the match became more physical. There were some questionable fouls made by the referees, who at different points in the match had lengthy conversations with Coach Almeyda and Quake midfielder Tommy Thompson. At one point, Thompson became so frustrated after a whistle blew for a foul against him, that he picked the ball up threw it across the pitch. Frustrations aside, the Quakes seem stagnant and unsure of themselves. They still seem to lack a sense of group cohesion that successful teams possess and until they find it, they will continue to struggle.

FINAL: LAFC defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 5-0.

UP NEXT: The next match for the Quakes will take place at Avaya Stadium on Saturday, April 6th versus the Portland Timbers.
