Sacramento A’s podcast Tony Renteria Tue May 12, 2025:

#1 Tony the Sacramento A’s are coming off two landslide loses to the New York Yankees where they saw Aaron Judge and Ben Rice rake in both contests on Friday and Sunday.

#2 The A’s were fortunate to win on Saturday coming back from six runs behind in the fourth inning to win it 11-7 as the Yankees middle relief staff had a malfunction and the A’s took advantage of it.

#3 The A’s had a shot at getting into first place last Tuesday night against first place Seattle after winning on Monday night bringing them one game off the pace the A’s all they had to do was put the finishing touches on the M’s but that was not to be as the A’s lost the contest 5-3 and fell back two games.

#4 The A’s pitching had trouble trying to get Yankees Aaron Judge out. Judge had four hits against A’s on Sunday. Judge raised his average to .409 and to say the least made every at bat count against the struggling A’s pitching staff.

#5 Ironically after losing four out of six games on the last homestand the A’s remain just two games behind the Mariners and tied for second with the Houston Astros. The A’s need to put there shoulder into the next six games facing two tough teams the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants it all starts tonight in LA.

Sacramento A’s podcast Barbara Mason Mon May 12, 2025

#1 Barbara, tough two losses for the Sacramento A’s and both of the losses were not even close and there was no mercy rule. The New York Yankees defeated the A’s on Friday night 10-2 and won against by ten runs on Sunday 12-2.

#2 New York Yankee slugger Aaron Judge got four hits and is hitting the Ted Williams line at .400. Ben Rice assisted with a grand slam as the Yankees poured it on A’s pitching.

#3 Judge got a two run base hit when the Yankees rallied for five runs in the top of the second inning against former Yankee pitcher Luis Severino. Severino was hoping to have some success against his former teammates but they knew too well.

#4 The line for Severino four innings nine hits, eight runs all earned, two walks and two strike outs. Certainly Severino was giving it his best effort but the Yankees were seeing his pitches and took advantage of it.

#5 The A’s try and turnover a new leaf they’ve had better luck on the road and open a six game road trip Tue May 12 against the Los Angeles Dodgers at the Dodgers Stadium. The A’s are still holding a second place tie in the AL West with the Houston. Starting pitchers for Tuesday for Sacramento A’s manager Mark Kotsay he hasn’t decided yet and for the Dodgers RHP Landon Knack (2-0 ERA 4.61) first pitch 7:10pm PDT.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: ATH and LAD to meet in the 2025 World Series

ATH and LAD meet in the 2025 World Series

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

The Athletics of Sacramento overachieved this season, winning the American League West Division, beating the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series, and heading to the World Series in Los Angeles after the Dodgers won 120 games for a new MLB season record.

The most games won in an MLB regular season is 116, a record shared by the 1906 Chicago Cubs and the 2001 Seattle Mariners. The first game of the World Series begins on Friday, October 25, at the remodeled (Looking like new) Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

With the help of AI, the first pitch is thrown by the one and only Frank Sinatra, who was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan since his childhood in New York. For the young kids, who have no idea who this Sinatra guy is, he is probably the greatest singer in American pop history: a Grammy and Oscar winner. Born and raised in Hoboken, New Jersey, there is a statue of the iconic singer, actor, producer, and entrepreneur on the streets of Hoboken.

AT Dodgers Stadium, all 56,000 fans, plus some 5,000 extra standing room only, look at the scoreboard to see the legendary Sinatra throw the first pitch. For the record, Frank Sinatra was good friends with iconic Brooklyn Dodger Manager, Leo Durocher, and later with his Italiano Compagno, Tommy LaSorda. Frequently, after an afternoon game at Dodger Stadium, Frank and Tommy will drop by ‘La Dolce Vita’ in Beverly Hills, the place for celebrities.

I interviewed LaSorda many times, and inside his office were photos with Sinatra and a “Who’s Who in Showbiz. Tommy spoke conversational Español, The aerial Gondola connecting Union Station to the Dodger Stadium property is now completed (a project that took years), the same project which was imitated by then A’s President Dave Kaval during his proposal for the new A’s park at Jack London Square.

That was a failure due to the lack of leadership by the City of Oakland and the Oakland A’s organization; it was ‘the perfect storm’. These Gondolas going up from Union Station to Elysian Park at Dodger Stadium are packed with fans, not to mention the large parking lot.

Over 30 million cars are registered in the State of California, more than half in the LA area, but that parking lot is not that big. Those who cannot attend in person can watch on television, but watching all the games will be complicated.

The games will air on ESPN, FOX, Apple TV+ (for exclusive streaming games), the Roku Channel, and a wide range of games on RSN(Regional Sports Networks). Good luck finding your favorite. \ IMPORTANT: The home games for the ATH for this World Series, will have to be played at another stadium, not Sutter Health Park, because playing a World Series at a minor league park is not acceptable to standards of Major League Baseball.

So, although the Dodgers were not scheduled to play the A’s this year during the regular season in Sacramento, in this imaginary World Series the A’s would have to find a Major League park to play their “home”games.

The Oakland Athletics and the Los Angeles Dodgers last met in the World Series in 1988. The Dodgers won the series in five games, defeating the Athletics. I broadcast that series in Spanish. Unfortunately, I will not be in the 2025 World Series. “Set your dreams high, and don’t stop till you get there.” – Bo Jackson

MLB podcast with Michael Roberson Sun Apr 6, 2025: Are torpedo bats legal?; Dodgers fall short of season opening consecutive win record; plus more MLB news

Austin Wells of the New York Yankees hits a home run in the first inning of the Yankees’ game against the Milwaukee Brewers on March 29. The Yankees went on to win 20-9. Wells was using what some have dubbed a “torpedo bat.” Angelina Katsanis/AP

MLB podcast Michael Roberson Apr 5, 2025:

#1 Michael, talk about the torpedo bat. It has more mass one the barrel and gives players an advantage of impact as the bat meets the ball. The torpedo does what the traditional bat doesn’t. Is this bat legal and is it a better advantage say than the corked bat?

#2 The Los Angeles Dodgers were 8-0 going up against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night but it was sloppy baserunning that caught the Dodgers flatfooted and they wound up losing in a nail biter 3-2. The Dodgers were within two games of tying the Brooklyn Dodgers 1955 start of ten wins in a row.

#3 Cleveland Guardians Jose Ramirez had himself a Friday night slugging three home runs and making Cleveland history in hitting three homers in one ball game. Ramirez hit homers in the first, fifth and ninth innings. The Guardians ended up besting the Los Angeles Angels

#4 Micahel, Friday’s home opener for the San Francisco Giants wound up being a marathon going 11 innings as the Giants edged the Seattle Mariners at Oracle Park 10-9. The other story was Giants veteran starter Justin Verlander who struggled in 2 1/3 innings of work surrendering five hits and three earned runs. Verlander also struggled in his last outing. It was Verlander’s first start at Oracle Park since the 2012 World Series 13 years ago when he was with the Detroit Tigers.

#5 Michael wanted to ask you about the Sacramento A’s opening homestand. The A’s got swept in all three games to the Chicago Cubs and all three contests were not even close. The A’s so far have faired better on the road as they are so far 3-2 getting two wins in Seattle and one in Colorado. It should also be mentioned the A’s have not sold out any of the three games in Sacramento.

MLB podcast with Michael Duca:

#1 Michael the Sacramento A’s are about to play an entire season in a minor league park that seats 14,014 fans including adding them on the outfield grass behind the fence. Do you see this concept working at Sutter Health Park. Will the amenities be acceptable for fans and players.

#2 81 games is a long season if you consider working in a tiny work space such as the players, fans, employees will have to at George M Steinbrenner Park for the Tampa Bay Rays and the Sacramento A’s at Sutter Health Park. In the course of that amount of games will there be a point where it’s workable or not workable for those involved?

#3 The Los Angeles Angels released outfielder Mickey Moniak on Tuesday. The moved shocked many who have followed Moniak who hit .219, 14 home runs last year. In two and half seasons with the Angels Moniak hit .242 with 100 RBIs and had an OPs of .709. Moniak was going to share the outfield duties with Jo Adell. His release comes two days before the regular season.

#4 Michael Duca ESPN with us on the podcast and like ESPN wrote about the New York Yankees they got to carry it like a battlescar can the Yankees really bounce back after their fifth inning World Series nightmare?

#5 Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts who lost 18 pounds couldn’t keep solid food down is reportedly on the mend and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts had him in the line up for today’s exhibition game after being out of action since the beginning of spring training.

MLB commentary with Greg Lee: Baseball has to change!

The Los Angeles Dodgers signed 23 year old Japanese pitcher rookie phenom Roki Sasaki to a rookie contract and a $6.5 million signing bonus (AP News file photo)

Baseball has to change!

By Greg Lee

Critics are up in arms about changing the MLB rules because the Dodgers are currently projected to have a $375 million opening day payroll and have invested over $2 billion dollars in player salary the last two years – almost a billion of which is “deferred.”

Some even want a ‘salary cap” like the NFL or NBA. Yeah how well that works. As the always free speaking Joe Kelly said in his “Baseball is Boring” podcast, even if you “level the financial playing field” the actual sport-climate of the team and when even the geography are going to be factors. They’re factors now.

A current history of performance, a stable future, and word-of-mouth from other players. These things matter and too few teams “invest” in those things now. All three have been tentpoles since the massively wealthy Guggenheim group took over the Dodgers.

Stability? How about a perennial Top 10 minor league system? A manager who has been been there for almost a decade, thriving, growing and learning. The culture in this organization is such that when Shohei Ohtani signed his contact it had a no trade clause that becomes invalid IF Friedman (president) and one of the other owners leaves. Stability.

Reputation matters too. From finding and helping Chris Taylor and Max Muncy go from the scrap heap to All-Stars, to rehabilitating just about every pitcher (except Noah Syndergard and that stubborn closer dude lol) – the organization has a reputation for player evaluation, data analysis and SHARING with the players and working with them to help them improve.

And then there’s geography. Which is more than “location, location, location!” And it’s also not. Kelly makes the point that all other things being equal, players would rather get their money somewhere nice (say like Los Angeles, which isn’t always on fire, except when it is) than say Milwaukee or Minnesota (no offense, his examples). That tracks though right?

For players geography is more than just being able to go skiing, to the beach, to a 5-star night out, Hollywood gala or Disneyland though. Corbin Burnes one of the best pitchers in the league left $30-60 million dollars on the table to sign in Arizona, which has a good team, a reputation for developing pitchers, a healthy fanbase… and his twins that were born last summer.

Oh yeah and then there’s that fanbase. The market. That matters too. No one is going to come out and say it, except maybe Kelly (who didn’t) but despite having rabid and loyal fans, would you rather play in Boston or New York where you’re either the goat or every once in awhile the hero?

The East Coast media, which drives those passionate fans, are persistent and ruthless. And that’s not the same anywhere else, except maybe Philly. Think about the three Japanese stars who recently signed in Los Angeles: Ohtani (who is worldwide media giant), and Yohsinobu Yamamoto (who is by some accounts “less reserved” but more stand-offish publicly) and the 23-year old phenom who has already had run-ins with the intrusive Japanese media. Last year anywhere from 30+ Japanese reporters would follow the Dodgers. Imagine that scrum… AND the East Coast media. For their part, the Dodgers did an amazing job of making Sho available to satisfy the media, and no doubt grow his (and their) brand, but Yamamoto was much more sheltered, I wouldn’t say unavailable, but if I had to guess he had complete control of the access anyone got to him.

In Los Angeles these guys are heroes. When they screw up, meh. A player may take a little heat for a day or two. Maybe a week, but if they don’t lean into it and stoke the fire, like most fans – Dodger fans and the LA media, move on.

Another thing that the Dodgers do is that they absolutely run PR and they have players who are clearly comfortable in the role out playing their version of The Greatest Showman. Mookie has an interview show with (usually visiting) players, Freddie is the “family man” face of the team. Muncy and Kiké they’re the pitchmen, the hypemen. They’ll talk to anyone any time. This “PR” is good… great for fan interaction and has helped some of the players go from “role-players” or guys who might take more heat, to “fan favorites.”

So the premise of Kelly’s argument is that if money WERE (as if it’s not or couldn’t be now) that players would still pick places that in droves. The best players would still want to flock together. To win, to be successful and for their own comfort.

Final word. What I seldom see when people complain about the deferral system is any recognition that, by rule, the organization has to have the funds actually set aside in an escrow starting sometime after the first season of the contract. So it isn’t that the deferrals are kicked down the road (that far) they just don’t count wholly against the luxury tax.

Which is to say, the main point of deferrals is a luxury tax gambit. It’s not a cheat. It’s the rule, it’s been there for years and years. Why? I have no clue. My best guess, not being a math guy, is that if there are any changes in 2026’s collective bargaining agreement, it will be how deferrals are counted towards the luxury tax. A salary cap in the MLB is almost a non-starter.

The powerful players union would never stand for it, not in the face of decades of increasing salaries and profits. The Dodgers organization has taken advantage of their enormous wealth and the goal that they started with when purchasing the franchise, to win and profit. Does baseball need to change? Maybe, like the pitch clock and wider bases, maybe organizations need to evolve their strategies and their intentions if they want to change fan experience. After all, at the end of the day, that is what the Dodgers have done.

On Headline Sports with Charlie O:

#1 The incoming Sacramento A’s have announced they have sold out all their season tickets for their first interim year in Sacramento. Sutter Health Field where the Athletics will play is expected to be sold out for every game this season.

#2 When the A’s move to Las Vegas the A’s are hoping that will be the same goal sell outs for every single home game when they move there for their target date 2028.

#3 The Toronto Blue Jays and Vladimir Guerrero Jr have come to an agreement avoiding salary arbitration when Guerrero had agreed on a $28.5 million one year deal. Guerrero hit .323, 199 hits, 30 home runs, and 103 RBIs.

#4 The Houston Astros are relieved to reach a deal with left hand pitcher Framber Valdez in a contract worth $18 million for one season. Valdez was 15-7 with an ERA 2.91 last season. The Astros were hoping to hold onto some of their key pitchers going into the 2025 season.

#5 Major League Baseball has banned the two fans who interfered with Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Mookie Betts when Betts was reaching over into the first base stands at Yankees Stadium for a pop foul. One fan pried open his glove with the ball in it and the other tried to hold onto Betts right hand when he was resisting the two fans trying to get the baseball. For their trouble the two fans Austin Capobianco and John P Hansen have been banned from all MLB events and game indefinitely according to MLB.

World Series podcast with Stephen Ruderman: Dodgers win World Series in five games defeating Yankees in Bronx

Mookie Betts (50) and Freddie Freeman (5) both exclaim “You the Man!” as they celebrate scoring against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx during game 5 of the 2024 World Series on Wed Oct 30, 2024 (AP News photo)

World Series podcast with Stephen Ruderman:

#1 Earlier in game 5 the Yankees built up a 5-1 lead that went into the third inning that saw a home run by Aaron Judge and a homer by Jazz Chisholm in the first inning. Alex Verdugo got an RBI single in the second and Giancarlo Stanton with a home run in the third inning.

#2 The Dodgers would chip way at that four run Yankee lead in the Mookie Betts in the top of the fifth inning beat out an infield single that scored Enrique Hernandez and Freddie Freeman’s two run single scored Tommy Edman making 5-3. Then Teoscar Hernandez would hit an two RBI double that would tie up the game at 5-5.

#3 Stanton would fly to center that would score Juan Soto that gave the Yankees a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth. So the Bronx Bombers were not giving up just yet.

#4 The Dodgers would score twice to take the lead back in the top of the eighth when Gavin Lux with RBI hit score Edman and Betts would sac fly to scoring Edman to center put LA in drivers seat 7-6.

#5 The Dodgers would put this one away retiring the Yankees in the bottom of the ninth inning and taking the World Series Trophy back to Los Angeles with them The Dodgers would jump on the Yankees taking the first three games going up 3-0 but the Yankees pounded the Dodgers 11-3 in game 4 but the Dodgers who were behind 5-1 would come back in the fashion that they’ve played in post season with a one run 7-6 win to become the 2024 World Series Champions.
