Seal the deal: FC Dallas’ Sealy boots late goal to edge Quakes 2-1 in Frisco TX

The San Jose Earthquakes started their new season in Frisco, Texas as they visited FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium. Last season, the two teams were only separated by two points in the standings, with Dallas finishing 7th in the Western Conference while the Earthquakes came 9th.

The Quakes had one notable change this season, which was easy to see even before kickoff. As part of their 50th-anniversary celebration, they’re wearing red on their kits to honor the original Earthquakes franchise instead of the usual blue.

The Earthquakes started with a 4-3-3 formation a slight change in the lineup from last season due to the departure of Jamiro Monteiro who moved to Gaziantep of the Turkish Super Lig on a free transfer earlier this month, while Dallas was running a 3-5-2.

The Earthquakes got out to an early 1-0 lead when Cristian Espinoza brought the ball into the offensive third of the pitch down the right side and passed it into the box to Jack Skahan who shot the ball but Maarten Paes made a sensational save for Dallas.

Unfortunately for Dallas, Benjamin Kikanovic would get a secondary scoring chance on the rebound, and put it in the back of the net in the sixth minute.

The first card of the game was given to Carlos Gruezo when he pushed a Dallas player in a fairly dangerous position. The shot was deflected wide, and Dallas got another set piece with a corner which they played short and nothing came of it.

Dallas would tie it up in the 25th minute off of another corner opportunity, when Asier Illarramendi had a great touch around the defender in front, and followed it up with a shot that Daniel had no chance to save for the Earthquakes.

Illarramendi had another great scoring chance in the 34th minute, but his header went just wide. San Jose would get a second booking just before halftime when Rodrigues made an unnecessary tackle from behind.

At halftime, it seemed clear that Dallas had outplayed the Earthquakes in nearly every aspect besides the scoreboard. Dallas led in possession, shots, and shots on target, many of which came as the result of set pieces, The expected goals though, much like the scoreboard, were even after 45 minutes.

The second half remained scoreless early, and substitutions started in the 61st minute when Dallas brought Ema Twamusi on and he immediately created a scoring chance for his team. Luchi Gonzalez countered with some substitutions of his own in the 65th minute, bringing on two debuting players Vitor Costa and Preston Judd.

Daniel was forced to make some big saves in the second half to keep his team in the fight, and he could be seen getting frustrated with his defenders in the 72nd minute. Gonzalez made some more substitutions in the 73rd minute, bringing in Amahl Pellegrino and Alfredo Morales onto the pitch.

Despite some quality scoring chances from both teams, we entered the last ten minutes before stoppage time with a 1-1 tie. In the 83rd minute, Nico Estevez made another substitution for Dallas bringing Eugene Ansah into the game. In the 84th, Gonzalez made one more of his own, Michael Baldissimo.

Nkosi Tafari took a hit to the face during play in the 87th minute, and despite protest was forced to leave the pitch with the trainers due to potential concussion concerns. He quickly rejoined play after he was deemed healthy enough to continue.

Four minutes of stoppage time were added as either team looked to score a late go-ahead goal and walk away with three points rather than one. Dante Sealy did just that for Dallas, scoring in the 93rd minute. In the 95th minute, San Jose had one opportunity to equalize but they were unable to convert and Dallas walked away with a 2-1 win, and three points. Although it was a heartbreaking loss for Earthquakes supporters, Dallas deserved the win.

In a match where things were chippy late in the match, the San Jose Earthquakes and FC Dallas played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday evening at Pay Pal Park.

San Jose snapped its two match losing streak and are winless in three consecutives matches. FC Dallas has points in its last four matches.

FC Dallas (13-8-11-50 points) drew first blood in the 16th minute. Paul Arriola centered a ball into the middle of the box. Jader Obrian’s one timer deflected off of Tanner Beason and past ‘Quakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski for his second goal of the season.

San Jose (7-14-10-31 points) received a break in the 23rd minute when a shot inside the box pinballed of the hand of Marco Farfan for a penalty and a yellow card for Farfan.

Jeremy Ebobisse converted the penalty kick a minute later when he made a quick hesitation before beating FC Dallas goalkeeper Maarten Paes with a left footed shot for his team leading 16th goal of the season.

Ebobisee’s 16 goals are tied for the third-most in a single season in club history and most among all players other than Chris Wondolowski. His goal also marked his second goal of the season and of his MLS career via penalty.

Interim head coach tinkered with his lineup as Jackson Yueill was out with a knee injury and Cristian Espinoza came off the bench as a substitute for the first time this season. Benji Kikanovic and Judson started in place respectively.

“I think we looked good. The guys stepped up. I think everybody can have a chance to play and show the level that they have. We played against a good team. They made rotations and we had some players missing like Eric Remedi and rotated Cristian Espinoza. Dallas is still one of the best teams that plays good soccer here in the league, and I think we were good tonight. The team is defending every day a little bit better after the game against FC Cincinnati. We had very good moments with the ball and what we missed was to create a little bit more and arrive in the box. But I think that the guys that stepped up today did very well,” Covelo said.

San Jose received an advantage in the 82nd minute when Arriola retaliated with an attempted punch on a Quakes player. A VAR review confirmed the foul and Arriola was given a red card and an automatic ejection.

The ‘Quakes weren’t able to cash in the opportunity with FC Dallas down a man for the final 13 minutes of the match including the five extra minutes in stoppage time.

“I think the group put themselves in good spots. I thought there were some good moments where we exploited spaces, on counterattacks working from the width into the middle and then trying to get to the other side of the field. Ultimately our final decisions let us down a little bit, prevented some more clear-cut chances,” Ebobisse said.

Both Marcinkowski and Paes made one save during the match.

GAME NOTES: Each team finished the match with five corner kicks.

San Jose is now 29-21-20 all-time vs. FC Dallas, including a 17-8-11 home record.

The Earthquakes are now 7-10-7 in MLS play under interim head coach Alex Covelo.

The Quakes extended their home unbeaten streak to three matches (2-0-1).

Ferreira and FC Dallas bomb on Earthquakes in 4-1 win

The Dallas Stars scored three goals in the first half en route to a 4-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday evening at Toyota Stadium.

Dallas has points in four of its last five matches and sit in third place in the Western Conference with 42 points. San Jose has two of its past three matches and anchor the bottom of the conference with only 24 points.

FC Dallas (11-7-9-42 points) drew first blood in the third minute. Alan Velasco centered a ball over to Jesús Ferreira who buried home a shot past ‘Quakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski, who made his first start after suffering a concussion two weeks ago, for his first goal of the match.

Marco Farfan doubled FC Dallas’ lead in the 20th minute. Sebastian Lletget found Farfan inside the box on the left side. Farfan’s shot from a tough angle beat Marcinkowski for his first goal of the season.

FC Dallas scored its third unanswered goal of the first half when Ferreira recorded his brace in the 41st minute. Ferreira started a counter attack for FC Dallas. After a give and go with Paul Arriola, Ferreira’s initial shot was blocked by Nathan but Ferriera gained his own rebound and shot into an empty net for his team leading 14th goal of the season.

San Jose (5-12-9-24 points) were too busy defending in the first 45 minutes to muster much of an offensive attack.

FC Dallas picked up where it left off in the first half with their fourth consecutive goal in the 57th minute. Lletget recorded his second assist of the match when he found Velasco in the middle of the pitch. Velasco blasted a shot from 30 yards out into the right corner of the net for his first goal of the season.

Jeremy Ebobisse spoiled FC Dallas goalkeeper Maarten Paes’ bid for a clean slate in the 60th minute. Benji Kikanovic found Ebobisse just outside the box along the left side. Ebobisse rifled in a shot that hit the crossbar and into the back of the net for his team leading 14th goal of the season.

Paes only needed to make one save on just two shots on target to earn the victory. Marcinkowski made two saves on six shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished the match with seven corner kicks. FC Dallas had two.

San Jose lost for the first time in Dallas since 2017 (2-1-2).

Wondo says farewell in Quakes final game in 1-1 draw with FC Dallas

SAN JOSE—The greatest goal scorer in MLS history had his swan song.

San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski announced his retirement from the game of soccer to a crowd of 17,075 after his team played its final match of the season to a 1-1 draw with FC Dallas on Sunday afternoon at Pay Pal Park.

What was supposed to happen last year in 2020, finally happened after a career that spanned 17 years. Wondolowski originally intended to have 2020 be his final year in soccer but due to the Covid-19 pandemic that postponed the season for four months and then returned with no fans allowed inside the stadiums, he wanted to play one more full season with the fans in attendence.

Wondo, 38, finished his storied career as the MLS leader in goal with 171, 26 more than any other MLS player (Landon Donovan-145) and 413 games played, including 376 appearances for San Jose, most in club history and third most in MLS history.

He also holds the MLS records for combined regular season and playoff goals (173), goals for one club (167), game-winning goals (46), and goals in 1-0 victories (14), while ranking second in multi-goal games (25) and tied for second in hat-tricks (5).

As for the match, it was only fitting that Wondolowski scored a goal in his final game. His goal broke the ice for San Jose (10-13-11) in the 34th minute. Marcos Lopez sent in a low cross into the box where Wondo one-timed a perfect volley into the left corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season.

FC Dallas (7-15-12) had a chance to even the game late in the half when Quakes goalie Daniel Vega, who made his only start of the season, collided with Jáder Obrian inside the box and was whistled for a penalty by referee Victor Rivas.

However Ricardo Pepi’s penalty attempt in the 40th minute hit off the cross bar and was cleared away by the Quakes as FC Dallas weren’t able to generate a second opportunity.

FC Dallas scored the equalizer two minutes later. Jesus Ferreira’s clearing attempt out of his own zone caught San Jose’s backline flatfooted as it led to a breakaway from Obrian. The 26 year native of Colombia dribbled in and chipped the ball past Vega for his ninth goal of the season in the 42nd minute.

Each team had chances in the final 10 minutes of the match to score the game winning goal but none of the attempts were successful.

Vega didn’t make a save on the one shot on target his faced. FC Dallas goalie Jimmy Maurer made six saves on seven shots as each keeper earned a draw.

For Wondolowski, he wanted to make his announcement in front of the Quakes faithful to give them a chance to say goodbye to him on the pitch one final time.

“I wanted to do this in front of fans instead of in front of a bunch of cameras,” said Wondolowski as he address the crowd. I wanted to do this in front of you because you guys have been there from day one. This is the last run. I told myself I would cry, and I knew that tears would be coming, but thank you guys. It’s been an amazing ride. I can’t thank you guys enough. It starts with my teammates and literally the league. These guys have been there, in the locker room, practices and the battles. I’ve got to thank my family and everyone here. There are more people than I can count, many Wondolowskis, mom, dad. I got my wife and two girls and a little one on the way.”

Wondo couldn’t help but be overcome with emotion as he talked to the crowd and how much each of them meant to him during his career.

“The cool thing is that I get to do this with my hometown team,” the native of Danville continued. “Thank you guys for this wonderful ride. Thank you for being a part of me, pushing me on. I can’t thank you guys enough. This organization is going to do big things. I can’t wait for it, and we’ll be here for the future. Thank you to the fans. From Faultline to Epicenter, the Ultras and everyone here. I can’t thank you guys enough. You guys mean the world.”

Quakes head coach Matias Almeyda had this to say about his time with Wondo over the past three years.

“I enjoyed coaching him. We have an excellent relationship in the humane and sporting aspect. He has been a great professional. A goal scorer is leaving and it is difficult to replace goal scorers, especially him. Hopefully, our young players have recognized the path Chris has taken and follow it. Chris leaves a huge legacy behind, which is the nicest thing to leave behind. Many leave titles, many leave huge numbers, but he leaves a special legacy as the all-time leading scorer. With time, he and many others will realize how important that is,” Almeyda said.

Wondlowski, whose MLS career began in 2005 as a fourth-round Supplemental Draft pick out of Chico State, took home Golden Boot presented by Audi honors during the 2010 and 2012 campaigns. A five-time MLS All-Star and three-time Best XI selection, he also was named the league’s MVP in 2012.

The Quakes have a lot of questions to be answered during the off season such as who will be the next general manager? Will Almeyda return as head coach? Does he want to return? Will the team continue with its youth movement or will they look to acquire veteran talent both domestic and international?

Those questions will have answers to them later on as the offseason progresses.

But today was all about the celebration of Bay Area soccer legend Chris Wondolowski who hung up his cleats one last time.

Earthquakes and FC Dallas settle for 2-2 draw on Pride Day

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Earthquakes returned to Avaya Stadium after two road matches. After a rocky start, he Quakes have officially turned their season around and found a sense of consistency. Sitting in the middle of the Western Conference table entering play on Saturday afternoon, they would host FC Dallas on Pride Day presented by Wells Fargo.

The beginning of the match was not easy on the eyes for San Jose after a huge mistake from their goalie Daniel Vega. Vega should have received a routine pass from Florian Jungwirth. Instead he let the ball pass through his legs and over the goal line into the net. The own goal was assessed to Vega in the 27th minute.

After a demoralizing first half, Chris Wondolowski came back onto the pitch with a vengeance, scoring almost immediately after play resumed, bring the score even, 1-1. Magnus Eriksson would follow Wondo’s example, scoring just eight minutes later. Eriksson was particularly effective in this match, as he also assisted Wondolwski’s goal. Eriksson’s goal gave the San Jose the lead for the first time, despite scoring all three goals of the match.

Despite Vega’s early blunder, San Jose looked to be the better team and on their way to three points. That all changed when Francis Atuahene subbed in for FC Dallas in the 64th minute. Playing on his birthday, he scored a goal 48 seconds after stepping on the pitch. Tying the game at 2-2, and the score would hold for the remainder of the match.

San Jose will feel that this match slipped away and all eyes will be on Vega, who has made mistakes earlier in the season as well. This was a golden opportunity for San Jose as Dallas was missing key players who are out with International Duty.  A bright spot for Dallas is that they we able to pick up a point despite being short-handed. Conversely, the silver lining for San Jose is that they know that if they can limit their mistakes, they can play well enough to get three points against playoff level opponents. 

Final: San Jose vs. Dallas, 2-2 draw.

Earthquakes, FC Dallas play to 0-0 draw

It was matchday in Dallas and the San Jose Earthquakes were fired up to battle FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium on Saturday. The Quakes started things off the good old Texas way by greeting the masses with “Howdy, y’all.” The Quakes rocked their road white uniforms on the field.

The Quakes’ starting lineup featured Daniel Vega, Nick Lima, Florian Jungwirth, Harold Cummings, Tommy Thompson, Anibal Godoy, Jackson Yueill, Cristian Espinoza, Magnus Eriksson, Shea Salinas and Danny Hoesen. The Quakes’ substitutions were Andrew Tarbell, Marcos Lopez, Paul Marie, Judson, Eric Calvillo, Vako and Chris Wondolowski.

The Quakes introduced themselves as the San Jose Earthquakes and added that they were ready to crash a party in the Big D. Moreover, there were some Quakes fans from the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area who sported the Black and Blue at the match.

Danny Hoesen almost scored the opening goal in the 16th minute, but FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez made a diving-style save to fend off the potential Quakes goal.

The Quakes knocked on the door in the 40th minute, but unfortunately, they didn’t. Cristian Espinoza won the ball in the midfield and almost converted for a goal. The first half ended in a 0-0 draw.

The Quakes kept trying for the opening goal in the second half. However, San Jose was unable to get on the board first, despite quite a few close calls.

Nick Lima had a go for a goal in the 52nd minute, but it went just wide of the net. Quakes head coach Matias Almeyda continued to clap his hands and show his team the right ways to do things, but that didn’t really help.

The Quakes’ first substitution took place in the 69th minute. Judson entered for Shea Salinas.

The Quakes’ second substitution took place in the 83rd minute. Chris Wondolowski entered for Eric Calvillo.

The Quakes’ third substitution took place in the 87th minute. Vako entered for Harold Cummings. Vako was just inches away from the opening goal at the 91st minute. San Jose and FC Dallas played to a 0-0 draw. SJ left Frisco, Texas with a point, which was better than nothing.

The Quakes return home to host FC Cincinnati on Saturday, May 4 at 7:00 pm PT.

Earthquakes win wild 4-3 match over FC Dallas to snap home winless streak

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The 4000 lb gorilla has officially left Avaya Stadium. Chris Wondolowski was the difference in an offensive juggernaut featured in the second half. His game-winning goal help the San Jose Earthquakes (4-14-8) defeat the Western Conference leading FC Dallas (13-6-7) 4-3 on Wednesday evening in front of a small, but raucous crowd.

The victory snapped the Quakes’ longest home winless streak in franchise history of 12 games. The Quakes hadn’t won at home since the season opening match on March 3rd against FC Minnesota.

The Quakes captain was back in the starting lineup after coming off the bench as a substitute the past five games. His last start was on July 25th, a home match against the Seattle Sounders. His game-winning goal came in the 62nd minute when he received the ball just outside the defense box and made a pretty give-and-go with Vako. As two FC Dallas defenders collapsed on Vako, Wondo was left all alone and fired a strike into the upper left corner of the net for his eighth goal of the season.

The Wondo Watch is now at 142, only three away from Landon Donovan’s MLS record of 145. It was also his 40th game-winning goal of his career. Which just so happens to be second in MLS history to guess who, Donovan, who had 41 of them.

“It’s great to get the goal,” said Wondo. “I keep using this word, but I’m so proud to be the captain of these guys. To be with them, to be out there fighting. It’s a huge win.”

FC Dallas would get off to another quick start against San Jose. In the eighth minute, Michael Barrios received a favorable bounce off a throw in and centered the ball right into the middle of the box where both Nick Lima and Quakes goalie Andrew Tarbell both went for the ball that deflected off Tarbell and right into a waiting Maxi Urruti. The Argentinian play-maker wasted no time tapping it into an empty net for his seventh goal of the season.

Vako would give the Quakes the equalizer in the 16th minute when after a nice give and goal with Magnus Eriksson, he was able to get the ball inside the box after a failed header clearing attempt by Matt Hedges left Vako all alone with a clear path to the goal where he took two dribbles and rocketed a shot into the upper left corner of the goal past FC Dallas goalie Jimmy Maurer . It was the Georgian striker’s seventh goal of the season.

Hedges would be the focus of another blunder in the 30th minute when he misfired wide right on a wide-open net after receiving a great centering feed from Barrios.

Vako proved to be a one man show in the 42nd minute when he gave the Quakes a 2-1 lead. He received a pass from Jahmir Hyka from 20 yards out, then dribbled down the middle of the box where he magically was able to get the ball through three FC Dallas defenders and once again had a clear path to the goal. He snapped a shot past a diving Maurer into the right corner of the goal for his eighth goal of the season leaving FC Dallas stunned.

“We had a lack of balance from our side tonight,” said FC Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja. “When you get three goals on an away game and don’t get points, obviously something didn’t work out well.”

FC Dallas tied the game in the 51st minute when substitute Santiago Mosquerea, who came in to start the second half, was rewarded after taking a centering pass from Urruti and fired a shot from 10 yards out past Tarbell for just his second goal of the season.

However, the deadlock wouldn’t last long when three minutes later at the 54th minute, Eriksson scored on a spectacular shot from 20 yards out. Eriksson worked a give-and-go with Wondo and on the return feed bent one in just inside the upper left corner of the post that Maurer had no chance at. It was the Swedish midfielder’s seventh goal of the season.

“I think the combination play up front has been better,” said Eriksson. “We have gotten to know each other better. It has worked well for the moment. We finally took three points at home and it’s a good feeling.”

FC Dallas would not go quietly as just four minutes after Eriksson’s goal at the 58th minute. they would get the equalizer at the 57th minute when Dominque Badji finished a pretty tic-tac-toe of a goal. Urruti sent a pass over to right side to Jacori Hayes, who then centered the ball over to a wide-open net. Badji, who one-timed the ball into an empty net for his team-leading ninth goal on the season.

“Not happy,” Quakes head coach Mikael Starhe jokingly said when asked about how he felt about the four-goal span in 10 minutes. “We talked about it in the locker room that we have to continually play our game and follow our game plan.”

Things would settle down after Wondo’s goal. However, FC Dallas put the pressure on the Quakes in the final minutes of stoppage time. Lima made a game saving sliding deflection to knock out the ball past the net in the final seconds of stoppage time.

GAME NOTES: The Quakes were without the services of defenseman Harold Cummings who was suffering from a thigh injury.

FC Dallas was without midfielder Carlos Grueza due to a suspension from yellow card accumulation.

There were no yellow or red cards issued in the game by referee Sorin Stoica.

The Quakes are now undefeated in their past four games against FC Dallas 3-0-1, including 3-1-4 in their last eight against FC Dallas. Overall, they are 16-8-8 against FC Dallas.

Jahmir Hyka’s goal streak was snapped against FC Dallas. He scored his last three matches against them.

Vako’s brace helps the Earthquakes top FC Dallas 3-1

The cellar-dweller San Jose Earthquakes and first-place FC Dallas temporarily switched places in the Western Conference at the Toyota Stadium Saturday night.

Vako scored twice for the first time in his MLS career. FC Dallas, third in the league, suffered their first home loss this season. It was also their first home loss at Toyota Stadium in 18 games.

The Quakes scored in the 19th, 47th and 88th minutes and finally snapped a 12-game winless streak. It was a triumphant win for the cellar-dwellers.

Dallas and San Jose goalies Jesse Gonzalez and Andrew Tarbell were each forced to make five saves. Maximiliano Urruti and Vako had career-highs in shots, eight and nine, respectively.

Shea Salinas put a good ball ahead from midfield to set up Vako. Vako avoided Gonzalez, who slid outside the corner of his box, juked another defender along the goal line and kicked the ball past two more defenders to take the 1-0 lead.

FC Dallas tied it 1-1 a short while later in the 23rd minute. Reggie Cannon secured the ball and connected with Michael Barrios in the box. As Barrios shot, Roland Lamah put the ball into the net from Tarbell’s other side.  

Jahmir Hyka took an arced ball into the box from Anibal Godoy and scored with a kick in front of the defender.    

FC Dallas was not without their chances though. The following were just a few of them.

Tarbell showed skill in the 53rd minute, stopping two close saves in one second against Tesho Akindele and Barrios, the latter coming when Tarbell was down.

In the 63th minute, Tarbell was able to stop Barrios again. This led to a corner, which Urruti used to hit the crossbar.

The final goal came when Wondolowski was parallel to the goal line and passed to Vako, who converted. Wondo made his way past three defenders en route to the net.

Up Next: The Quakes will take on the Colorado Rapids next Saturday at 6 pm PDT at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
