Raiders come out energized shut down Broncos 34-24; Bisaccia gets first win as Raiders head coach

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Rich Bisaccia greets Denver Broncos fans at Empower Field in Denver just before game time on Sun Oct 17, 2021 Bisaccia’s first game as head coach for the Raiders since Jon Gruden’s resignation.

Raiders come out energized shut down Broncos 34-24.

By Rich Perez

Las Vegas Raiders beat writer

The Las Vegas Raiders (4-2) came out truly inspired today and beat the Denver Broncos (3-3) 34-24 in a game that really was never close at all at Empower Field Stadium in Denver on Sunday. David Carr started the scoring with Henry Ruggs to make it seven nothing very quickly in the opening drive. Teddy Bridgewater came right back and scored for the Broncos to tie the game but… it was never close right after that, as the defense took over for the Raiders.

The Broncos attempted a fourth quarter come back if you can call it that down 31-10 at 11:16 Bridgewater threw for a 12 yard pass to receiver Courtland Sutter. Denver cut the lead to 31-17. At 7:57 Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson booted a 30 yard field goal to make it 34-17. The Broncos last score of the afternoon at the final 1:12 when quarterback Noah Fant caught a Bridgewater four yard pass for the Broncos ten point win.

The Las Vegas defensive line dominated today as Broncos QB Teddy Bridgewater struggled all day from pressure out on him all game long. Primarily from Max Crosby. The Raiders looked inspired to play well for the new coach and to show the world that they were focused once again on winning football games. Bridgewater threw 35-49 for 334 yards, three touchdowns and was picked off three times.

Carr threw 18-27, 341 yards, and two touchdowns. Josh Jacobs and Kenyan Drake both carried for a touchdown for the Raiders. The Raiders scored ten in the second quarter and 14 in the third quarter for the bulk of their offense. This being Raiders head coach Rich Bisaccia’s first game at the helm since the resignation of Jon Gruden said things flowed well on the way to his first Raiders victory as head coach “The best part for me was to get on the grass,” Bisaccia said. “The worst part for me was figuring out the headset. Once you get on the field and the game goes, a lot of our responsibilities were the same. There was really good dialogue” with his coordinators.”

Next week the Raiders take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Las Vegas in what should be an interesting game against the up-and-coming team lead by QB Jalen Hurts.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez: Olson to get more expanded role as offensive coach; more play calling this Sunday in Denver

On the Raiders podcast with Rich:

#1 Rich with former head coach Jon Gruden gone next man up on offense is offensive coordinator Greg Olson who is looking at an expanded role in running the Raiders offense.

#2 Olson 58, will be doing the play calling and he’ll be getting the plays to quarterback Derek Carr. Gruden has been the play caller for the offense since 2018.

#3 Olson spoke to the media Thursday afternoon saying not a lot will be changed with the offense. Olson said there might be a different flow but don’t expect any major changes from the playbook with Carr’s play calling.

#4 How much of an advantage does it have to be for Olson to have been working with Carr since Carr’s rookie season under center?

#5 How much of advantage will it be for Carr to throw against the Denver Broncos defense who has been struggling. The Broncos got beat rather handedly by the Pittsburgh Steelers in their last game Sunday 27-19 in Pittsburgh.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: How new head coach Bisaccia goes forward in the post Gruden era

Rich Bisaccia interim head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders will coach his first game against the Denver Broncos Sun Oct 17, 2021 after this week’s after resignation of former head coach Jon Gruden (Las Vegas Review-Journal file photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Tony R:

#1 For Las Vegas Raiders (3-2) owner Mark Davis he has to be a little shaken by all of this Gruden resignation and also a little nervous heading into the first Raiders game of the season without Gruden on the sidelines.

#2 For the players what’s your read on their reaction and how they approach Sunday’s game in Denver with interim head coach Rich Bisaccia as you said on Tuesday most likely they’ll still hold onto the Gruden playbook.

#3 This all went down pretty quick do you see sudden adjustments being made and what will be the make up the team mentally without Gruden around.

#4 Coach Bisaccia is someone these players and the organization will be looking up to for leadership and someone to pull them through what the Raiders call a sad and disappointing end to the Gruden era.

#5 The Denver Broncos (3-2) took a tough loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers (2-3) 27-19 last Sunday at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. Broncos quarterback Teddy Bridgewater threw for 24-38, 288 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. How do you see the Raiders matching up against the Broncos in this one at Mile High in Denver.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: What Gruden did goes against the organization’s history

On the Raiders podcast with Tony R:

The Las Vegas Raiders have a long history of being inclusive with open doors and giving professionals a chance that others wouldn’t give them. The Raiders managing partner the late Al Davis hired the first minority coach of the modern era with the hiring Tom Flores.

The Raiders backed that up by hiring the first African American coach in Art Shell not once but three different times. The Raiders also followed by having the first woman in charge of football with Amy Trask as CEO.

The Raiders have a history of inclusiveness and you treat people on their actions regardless of their outside appearances. What former head coach Jon Gruden did over a period of years is just really paramount and against what the Raiders are.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Barbara Mason: Raiders working on avoiding turnovers; more scoring as they meet Denver this Sunday

The Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr (4) and the Raiders will be practicing holding onto the ball all week as they prepare for the Denver Broncos for Sun Jan 3, 2021’s game at Empower Field in Denver (fanical.com/denver-broncos/watching file photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Barbara Mason:

#1 Narrow game the Miami Dolphins come out ahead of the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday night’s game 26-25. The loss drops the Raiders from making the post season.

#2 The Raiders held a 13-6 first half lead but Raiders quarterback Derek Carr just couldn’t execute the Raiders offense in the red zone.

#3 Considering that Carr was supposed to be out ten to 14 weeks but started the game on Saturday and played the Dolphins defense to a close second half as well 20-12 but couldn’t get anymore on the scoreboard than they could would you consider Carr’s staying in the game miraculous within itself?

#4 Carr threw for 336 yards and a touchdown, considering the groin injury he was coming off playing that close of a game against the Dolphins spoke volumes about Carr’s drive to win this game.

#5 The Raiders go up next against the Denver Broncos this Sun Jan 3rd to ring in the New Year. The Broncos are coming off a 19-16 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last Sunday. The Broncos have lost three of their last four games. This is the Raiders last game of the season how do you see this match up this Sunday.

The Las Vegas Raiders running back Devonte Booker (23) carries for a first half touchdown against the Los Angeles Chargers in the Raiders last game Sun Nov 8th at Inglewood (AP News photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Rich:

#1 Rich the Raiders since taking that very tough loss to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers back on Sun Oct 25th by a final of 45-20 have really got back on track with two straight wins against the Browns and Chargers.

#2 Rich, those two wins improved the Raiders record to 5-3 and they got those two wins on the road whereas in previous years the Raiders really struggled as a road team.

#3 Talk about the coaching strategy that head coach Jon Gruden has really put into improving the team there no doubt that he’s studied film with both sides of the football and has been effect in all facets of his last two wins.

#4 The last game the Raiders were in Los Angeles against the Chargers and it was a razor close game with quarterback Derek Carr throwing for 165 yards and two touchdowns and all the scoring the Raiders could get in that one was crucial because it came right down to the wire in that contest.

#5 The Raiders face the Denver Broncos, the Broncos have won two of their last five games and have a couple narrow games in their last two beating the Atlanta Falcons 34-27 and taking a close win against the LA Chargers the week before 34-27. Talk about how you see this game Sunday at Allegiant Stadium between the Broncos and Raiders.

Headline Sports podcast with Jessica Kwong: All eyes on LeBron to take the Lakers to the promise land; Broncos has no intention to sign Kaepernick; plus more

LeBron James leads the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat which started on Wednesday night in the bubble at Disney World in Bradenton Fl. Here he exchanges words with game officials during the NBA Western Conference Finals against the Denver Nuggets Sep 26, 2020 (AP News photo)

On Headline Sports podcast with Jessica:

#1 Jessica taking a look at the NBA Finals game 1 was on Wednesday night in the bubble at Bradenton Fl at the Disney World bubble the odds makers have the Los Angeles Lakers favored in the series as they defeated the Miami Heat 116-98.

#2 Despite there’s no fans for the Finals is there any kind of advantage for the Miami Heat playing in Florida for the Finals.

#3 A sonic boom shook up the French Open on Monday, the boom startled fans, players and those working the Open thinking it was an explosion or fireworks nearby.

#4 The Denver Broncos have no intention of bringing former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick on board with the team according to Broncos head coach Vic Fangio Kaepernick’s name hasn’t come up in discussions and Fangio and team general manager John Elway look for someone else “who will be a the best fit.” Does this look like collusion is still in effect against Kaepernick?

#5 No one expected the San Francisco Giants to amount to anything close to a post season team and while the Giants just missed making the last and final eighth spot in the National League Wild Card race by one game they weren’t expected to compete for a playoff position during the 60 game regular season and so the Giants manager Gabe Kapler’s name has been floated for National League manager of the Year how do you see his chances to get the award?

Season comes to an end after heartbreaking loss in Denver 16-15

sfgate.com photo: Oakland Raider quarterback Derek Carr (4) after he tried to throw for a two point conversion in the fourth quarter

By Jeremy Kahn

With their playoff hopes on the line, the Oakland Raiders went for two points and the win instead of one point and the chance at overtime.

Shelby Harris knocked down Derek Carrs pass attempt to Hunter Renfrow, as the Denver Broncos held on to defeat the Raiders 16-15 at Empower Field at Mile High.

Carr and Renfrow hooked up for a three-yard touchdown pass on 2-and-goal, and gave the Raiders their first red zone touchdown in five trips on the afternoon.

On the other side of things, Drew Lock won for the fourth time in five starts, as the Broncos and Raiders tied for second place in the AFC West, five games behind AFC Western Division Champion Kansas City Chiefs.

Like the Broncos, the Raiders season comes to an end, as they lost five of their last six games and missed the playoffs for the second time in as many years in the second stint with Jon Gruden as head coach of the Raiders.

This is the fourth straight season that the Broncos will miss the playoffs with their playoff win coming in Super Bowl 50 at Levis Stadium on February 7, 2016.

Daniel Carlson saw the Raiders first drive come to an end, as he missed a 39-yard field goal that went left.

Carlson did get the Raiders on the board when the Broncos held them in tact at the five-yard line, and Carlson hit a 23-yard field goal to get the Raiders on the board.

Brandon McManus tied up the game, as he hit a 43-yard field goal.

It looked like the Raiders took the lead on their next series, as Carr found Renfrow for a five-yard touchdown; however, like scoring plays, the play was reviewed and reversed by instant replay and the ball was about a yard shy of the goal line.

Von Miller then stopped Alec Ingold on fourth-and-goal, and Gruden continued to steam after his challenge was denied.

This was the first time that the Broncos completed a fourth-and-goal for the first time since October 22, 2017 against the San Diego Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium.

Lock gave the Broncos the lead for good, as he found Andrew Beck for a 1-yard touchdown pass and the Broncos went into the locker room with a 10-3 lead.

McManus gave the Broncos a 10-point lead, as he kicked a 49-yard field goal for the only points of the third quarter. He then extended the lead up to 13 points when he nailed a 51-yarder with just four seconds gone in the fourth quarter.

Carlson then got the Raiders within striking range, as he hit a 33-yarder and a 28-yarder to get the Raiders within seven.

The biggest play of the game came when the Broncos were called for Unnecessary Roughness penalty, and McManus missed a 57-yard field goal wide right that would have essentially clinched the game.

Carr then drove the Raiders down the field, as he found Renfrow for the touchdown; however, the two-point conversion was batted down.

NOTES: Josh Jacobs missed the season finale due to a shoulder injury and an illness.

UP NEXT: When the 2020 season begins, the Oakland Raiders will be no more and they will be known as the Las Vegas Raiders.
