Clippers White Wash Warriors 119-104; Third loss in four games

Clippers White Wash Warriors 119-104; Third loss in four games

By Barbara Mason

Monday night the Golden State Warriors (42-16) took on the LA Clippers (29-30) at Crypto.com Arena. Both teams are coming off pressure-packed games. Saturday night the Clippers beat the Mavericks by the score of 99-97 and the Warriors survived a marathon against the Los Angeles Lakers 117-115. Both of these teams have proven that they can handle pressure.

Jonathan Kuminga is playing at a very high level right now and this will bode well for Golden State as we head into the All-Star game and the final months of the 2021- 2022 season. His youthful energy provides a real spark for the Warriors.

Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson will provide the offense along with Andrew Wiggins and Kuminga in this game. Reggie Jackson will lead the Clippers with his offensive skills. With Kawhi Leonard and Paul George out since early February there will be a lot of work for Jackson.

The Clippers have a very good defense and so the Warriors will have to control their ball movement and avoid those turnovers in this third meeting of the season.

The Warriors got a good start with Curry hitting all six of his opening shot attempts in the first quarter. Both teams were shooting better than 60% in a great offensive game.

It wasn’t until three minutes left in the opening quarter that Curry missed a shot. He had 16 points in the first quarter. The Warriors led after 12 minutes 37-34 and finished the quarter shooting at 64% in a high-powered offensive game by both teams.

It was a 61-59 Clipper lead at the half. Curry finished with 26 points in the two quarters. He was 6 of 7 from downtown and was the only Warrior in double digits. Jackson led the Clippers with 12 points. Both Ivica Zubac and Nicolas Batum had 11 points in the half.

The Warriors needed to limit Jackson and protect the ball in the second half. Most of the seven turnovers for Golden State were in the second quarter and came practically back to back.

The second half began nothing like the first quarter for the Warriors. Their offense went cold in the first three minutes as the Clippers took the largest lead in the game 71-61 after the opening four minutes. The Warriors offense had dried up and every one of the Clipper starters were in double digits. After three quarters the Clippers led 94-78.

The Clippers were rolling with one of their best offensive efforts of the year and the Warriors were getting rolled. It is a rare thing to see Golden State on the short end of the score in the third quarter. They had a lot of work to do in the fourth quarter.

Shoot and miss was just about all we saw in the fourth quarter. The Warriors went from 60% to 29% in the final quarter. It was just not the Warriors night. Turnovers, missed open shots, and empty possessions buried the Warriors in this game.

The Warriors will have the day off tomorrow before taking on the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Chase Center. This will be the final game before the All-Star game next Sunday.

Sharks Shut Out at Home by Oilers 3-0

Edmonton Oilers left winger Evander Kane (91) tries got get the puck past San Jose Sharks goaltender James Reimer (47) at SAP Center in San Jose on Mon Feb 14, 2022 (AP News photo)

SAN JOSE– The Sharks resumed the season after a long break Monday, and lost to the Edmonton Oilers 3-0. Warren Foegele, Darnell Nurse and Connor McDavid scored for the Oilers and Stuart Skinner made 20 saves for the win. James Reimer made 36 saves for the Sharks.

The Sharks had not played a game since February 1. The All-Star break and the fact that the Sharks had so few games rescheduled meant that the Sharks went 12 days between games. After Monday’s game, Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner said:

“I thought our legs were good in the first seven, eight, nine shifts of the period, you know, I thought had a little adrenaline. But as the game went on I think that you could see there wasn’t a lot of sharpness to our game. And that’s the worry after being on a break that long. But you’ve got to find ways at this time of year, and there’s no excuses. Those are big points we let go.”

Discussing the team’s offensive woes, Boughner said: “We just couldn’t generate any offense tonight. We looked like the more we tried the worse we got. You saw me trying to juggle lines, trying to get something going, nothing worked.”

The first period saw two quick goals from Edmonton. The first came at 6:05 from Warren Foegele. Evan Bouchard’s shot from the point went off of Derek Ryan and then Foegele before getting by Reimer.

The second goal came at 7:10 on a point shot through traffic from Darnell Nurse. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins got the assist.

The Oilers took two penalties in the period, one before they scored and one after. The Sharks power play had three shots and gave up one short-handed. The overall shot count for the period was very close, 11-10 Oilers.

In the second period, the numbers were much less close. Though the Oilers did not score in the second, they out-shot the Sharks 14-2. On paper, the Sharks took three penalties and the Oilers took two, but most of those overlapped to create abbreviated power plays and a five-on-three for the Oilers. The Oilers power play ended up with seven shots and the Sharks had none.

Connor McDavid scored to make it 3-0 at 1:50 of the third period. The Sharks seemd to have escaped an onslaught from the Oilers offense but just when thought they could get out of the zone, McDavid was on his way back in. He evaded Brent Burns and took a quick shot that went by Reimer on the blocker side. Evan Bouchard got the assist.

The only penalty in the third period went against the Oilers. The Sharks power play managed two shots. The count for the period was 16-8 Oilers. In the face-off circle, the Oilers had a small edge with 52% of the wins.

At the end of the second period, Rudolfs Balcers was injured blocking a puck and did not return to the game. There were no updates on his status immediately after the game.

In his first game against the Sharks as an Oiler, Evander Kane had 4 shots, one hit, no penalties and no points.

The Sharks next play on Thursday at home against the Vancouver Canucks at 7:30 PM PT.

Curry brings up the rear for Nets in 109-85 defeat of Kings

BROOKLYN, NY. — The Brooklyn Nets handed the Sacramento Kings a 109-85 Valentine’s Day loss at Barclays Center despite missing three of their stars.

Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Ben Simmons were absent on Monday but Seth Curry on his first night as a member of the Nets scored 23 points to snap Brooklyn’s 11-game losing streak and end the Kings’ modest two-game winning streak.

De’Aaron Fox had a game-high 26 points, Davion Mitchell scored 13 points and Donte DiVincenzo contributed 12 points. But the Kings as a team shot just 34.4% from the field.

The Kings never led and the Nets had 19-point leads in the first, third and final quarters.

Domantas Sabonis, who recently joined the Kings after a six-player trade with the Indiana Pacers, failed to impress as he did in his first two games wearing purple. Sabronis scored just 9 points on four-of-11 shooting in 26 minutes.

Still, Kings interim coach Alvin Gentry thinks Sabonis — who went into Monday’s game averaging 18.9 points, 12.1 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 46 games — has boosted the team.

“We have played a lot of our offense through him,” Gentry said. “I think our guys have really enjoyed playing with him on the floor. I think our cuts have been much better because I think they anticipate getting the ball on the scoring cuts that they make. He’s just been a real stabilizer for us, really.”

After beating the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Washington Wizards to improve to 4-2 in the six games before Brooklyn, Gentry had high hopes for the matchup against the short-handed Nets.

“These were games that we were losing early on and all the way up until this week really,” Gentry said. “I hope this is a sign of good things to come.”

It didn’t turn out that way on Monday. The Kings were limited to 25.7% (9-for-35) from the three-point line. Meanwhile, the Nets shot 51.2% from the field and 34.6% from 3.

The Kings (22-37) are 13th in the western conference. They continue their road trip on Wednesday against the Chicago Bulls in the last game of the first half of the season. Tipoff is at 5 p.m.

#1 When you just sit back and look at that score the Cal Bears (11-15) 78 and the Oregon Ducks (16-8) 64 a game that was played at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene on Saturday night it’s shocking but yes it’s real.

#3 The Bears guard Jordan Shepherd on Saturday was the only Cal player to score in double figures with 33 points which quite remarkable if you consider Cal winning by 14 points so it looks like all Shepherd all the time.

#4 What also was remarkable was the first half Sunday where the Bears scored a 38-22 lead going into half time and you could see the shock on the faces on Ducks fans and Ducks bench.

Kupp’s heroics spark Rams to 23-20 Super Bowl LVI win over Bengals

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Brandon Powell rushes against the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Sun Feb 13, 2022 (AP News photo)

Sunday, February 13, 2022

A late touchdown pass, combined with a stellar defensive stand, helped the Los Angeles Rams win their second Super Bowl in franchise history Sunday at their own stadium in Inglewood, Calif., holding off the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20.

Cooper Kupp snared a 1-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford with 1:25 remaining in the fourth quarter, letting the Rams surge ahead from a 20-16 deficit. In what became the game-winning drive, Kupp also had a 7-yard run to convert a key fourth-down play, caught key passes and drew two defensive penalties.

Kupp, the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year, finished with eight receptions for 92 yards and two TDs. Kupp became a primary target for Stafford after Odell Beckham Jr. left with a knee injury in the second quarter. For his clutch efforts, Kupp was selected as the game’s most valuable player.

The Bengals had one last possession and reached midfield, but on a fourth-down play with 39 seconds remaining, the Rams’ Aaron Donald forced Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow to throw a wild, incomplete pass.

That play clinched the Rams’ first Super Bowl championship while residing in Los Angeles, having won the 1999 title in St. Louis. The Cleveland Rams moved to Los Angeles after winning the 1945 NFL championship, and the L.A, Rams last won an NFL crown in 1951.

Cincinnati took its first lead of the game on the first play of the third quarter, when Burrow found Tee Higgins on a deep route for a 75-yard score. Replays showed that Higgins got away with grabbing L.A. cornerback Jalen Ramsey’s facemask on the play.

An interception set up a Evan McPherson 38-yard field goal that gave the Bengals a 20-13 lead at 10:19 of the third quarter, and the Rams responded at 6:02 of the third with a field goal of 41 yards by Matt Gay. The game turned into a defensive battle for most of the fourth quarter.

The Rams opened the scoring at 6:26 of the first quarter on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Stafford to Beckham. McPherson’s 29-yard field goal in the final minute of the first quarter put Cincinnati on the board.

Stafford’s first TD pass to Kupp, from 11 yards out, put the Rams up 13-3, but missed the extra point on a botched hold. At 5:52 of the second quarter, Joe Mixon threw a 6-yard scoring pass to Higgins on the halfback option, pulling the Bengals to within 13-10 at the half.

Stafford threw for 283 yards, completing 26 of 40 passes for three touchdowns and two interceptions. Cam Akers was the Rams’ leading rusher with 21 yards on 13 carries.

Burrow, who was sacked for a Super Bowl record-tying seven times, completed 22 of 33 passes for 263 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Mixon ran 15 times for 72 yards, and Higgins caught four passes for 100 yards and two TDs. Ja’Marr Chase and Tyler Boyd each caught five passes for Cincinnati.

The Bengals are winless in three Super Bowls – the Bengals’ previous losses came in XVI (1981 season) and XXIII (1988 season), both against San Francisco,
