On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 Cal got their first taste of action on Wednesday against Chico State in exhibition play. In watching that pre season game can you get a sense, an idea that some of the players are ready for tonight’s opener?

#2 You have to go back to 2019-20 Cal head coach Mark Fox’s first season was the last time the Bears faced the UC Davis Aggies for a 72-66 on Nov 26, 2019 and here is coach Fox again ready to face the Aggies on opening night.

#3 Cal took a look at some 11 players Wednesday night and rotating 11 players the way coach Fox did gives him that advantage to see what some of these players can do but one game doesn’t really tell the whole story. Is it something that Fox has to conclude with a one game snap shot or through practices as well he can get an idea where he’s going?

#4 Since 1917-18 season the Cal Bears have had meetings with the UC Davis basketball team 33 in all and Cal has won everyone of those games since that time. Of that time Cal had 19 coaches since. In the 21st century Cal has seen the Aggies only three times here in the 21st century.

#5 Morris, it’s opening night it’s a special night for alumni, students, players, coaches, and front office people after the pre game festivities the Cal basketball program is a program that everyone on the Cal Berkeley campus are hoping that can turn around from last year’s season.

Golden State Warriors podcast with Barbara Mason: Warriors return home after racking up 0-6 road trip; Host the Kings tonight at Chase Center

A view of the Golden State Warriors bench on Fri Nov 4, 2022 in New Orleans (AP News photo)

On the Warriors podcast with Barbara:

#1 Barbara, how depleted do the Golden State Warriors seem after resting their three key players Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson and taking a nine point 114-105 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night in Pelican town.

#2 The Pelicans Brandon Ingram lead the Pelicans with 26 points and contributed on offense keeping New Orleans in the drivers seat for most of the game.

#3 What was remarkable was Ingram had missed four games in a row due to a concussion and was glad for the timing of getting back in the line up to face the Warriors.

#4 The Warriors Jordan Poole led Golden State with 20 points and nine assists, Ty Jerome had 18 points, and Kevon Looney was the only regular starter that was in uniform.

#5 The Warriors return to the nest tonight at Chase Center and host the Sacramento Kings who are coming off two road wins against the Orlando Magic and Charlotte Hornets.

Barracuda drop first of back to back against Wranglers by final of 8-2

Photo Courtesy of San Jose Barracuda Twitter. Patrick Sieloff gets warmed up before the game against Calgary.

By Titus Wilkinson (@TitusWisme)

The Barracuda took on the Wranglers in Calgary and received a stomping from their offense by a final of 8-2 in the first of back to backs.

The first period started off in a positive way with Tristen Robins scoring his 4th goal of the season at 10:49. The assists coming from both Andrew Agozzino and William Eklund.

That was about all of the positives to be extrapolated for the Barracuda as the rest of the period was pure domination for the Wranglers.

It was started with Matthew Phillips getting a goal at the 12:14 mark of the first period his sixth on the year. Assists coming from Radim Zohorna and Jakob Pelletier.

Following that up less than three minutes later Phillips followed up his own goal with another one again assisted by Zohorna and Pelletier.

Connor Zary saw fit to add on to the lead with another goal his fifth of the year this time with Nicolas Meloche and Cole Schwindt getting the assists.

Down 3-1 the lead only proceeded to get worse as Mitch McLain got his third goal of the season assisted by Jereme Poirier.

By the end of the first period the lead was 4-1 with the shots at 16-7 also in favor of Calgary.

The scoring in the second similar to the first took a minute as the first goal wouldn’t come till the 11:02 mark.

Connor Zary got his second this time with assists coming from Yan Kuznetsov and Schwindt. That goal got Aaron Dell pulled with Eetu Makiniemi drawing in.

Less than a minute later Phillips completed the hat trick with a goal on the power play. The assists coming from Ben Jones and Poirier.

That would be all of the offense in the second period with the shots finishing at 28-21in favor of Calgary.

Down 6-1 Danil Gushchin did not give up for the Barracuda as he would score just 2:37 into the third period. Ryan Merkley and Tristen Robins would get the assists on the goal.

The Wranglers would respond though a little later in the third period with Pelletier scoring from Zohorna and Poirier.

Jeffrey Viel clearly frustrated with the way the game was going got into a fight with Zohorna at the 9:44 mark.

Despite the large lead late in the game McLain added on to the lead with a power play goal. The assists going to Jones and Meloche.

The Barracuda’s next game will be against the Wranglers again in Calgary at 6 p.m. on the 8th.

Raiders lose to struggling Jaguars 27-20

Raiders Lose To Struggling Jaguars 27-20

By Barbara Mason

Last Sunday the Las Vegas Raiders (2-6) got blindsided by the New Orleans Saints 24-0. This Sunday the Raiders were looking to get back on track taking on the Jacksonville Jaguars (3-6) who have had major struggles of their own, one of them being unable to close out games.

They have lost numerous games by a single touchdown coming close far too many times. The Jags broke out of their three game losing streak with a 27-20 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Jacksonville.

The Raiders were first up on the scoreboard in the opening quarter taking a 7-0 lead. Devante Adams caught a pass from Derek Carr for 25 yards and the lead in this game.

The Raiders would tack on more points in the second quarter off a Daniel Carlson 38 Yd Field goal to take a 10-0 lead. Las Vegas struck again in the second when Carr connected again with Adams this pass for 38 yards and a 17-0 lead. The Raiders were really rolling in the first half of this game.

With 4:50 left in the half the Jaguars got up on the board. A Travis Etienne Jr. one yard romp gave Jacksonville their first touchdown of the game still trailing the Raiders 17-7. Before the quarter ended both kickers added to their respective teams tally. The Raiders Daniel Carlson kicked a 38 yard field goal and the Jaguars Riley Patterson was good for a 44 yard field goal. At the half the score was 20-10.

Jacksonville turned this game around with their first possession in the second half. Christian Kirk caught a seven yard pass for a touchdown and the Jaguars had trimmed the Raiders lead to 20-17. Offensively Las Vegas cooled off having trouble moving the ball at all in the second half.

Jacksonville kept the pressure on scoring in the opening minute of the fourth quarter taking a 24-20 lead, their first of the game. Again it was Etienne Jr. rushing for 5 yards.

With under three minutes left in the game the Raiders had the ball with no time outs but a chance to salvage the game. The Jaguars came up with some great defensive stops and they were able to put an end to their five game losing streak. Jacksonville added insult to injury in the closing minutes of the game with a 48 Yd field goal from Patterson.

The Raiders did get the ball back with 1:01 left on the clock. In that final possession Derek Carr was sacked and intercepted. This was a great comeback win for Jacksonville. The final was 27-20.

It was indeed a tale of two halves. The Raiders had a great first half and a miserable second half. Carr had 223 passing yards in the first half and only 36 yards in the second in a stunning turnaround. Josh Jacobs finished with 67 yards rushing and 20 yards receiving. Devante Adams had a great first half with two touchdowns and 146 yards receiving but not much going on in the second half.

This was an awful loss for Las Vegas who also struggled terribly last week against the Saints. They will take on the Colts next Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in another winnable game at home. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:05 and will air on CBS.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Dusty’s Dream Astros Win World Series

Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker after managing his third World Series wins his first World Series as the Astros defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in game 6 at Minute Maid Field on Sat Nov 5, 2022 (AP News photo)

Dusty’s Dream: Astros Win World Series

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Manager Dusty Baker has done it! His Houston Astros have won the 2022 World Series beating the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 in 6 games. This title, his first as a manager, should cinch his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, among managers, adding to the over 2,000 wins.

This was his ultimate dream since he became a manager, a very good player as we remember, for 19 years who also won a ring in 1981 as a member of the World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

A career that began with the Atlanta Braves, where he was a teammate of the real home run holder Hank Aaron. Dusty had a front row at history, in Atlanta, Dusty was in the on-deck circle when Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run, passing Babe Ruth.

Winning a World Series as a player is one thing, but as a manager is totally different. A manager carries the frustration of his team. As a manager, Dusty’s frustrations were as recently as 2020 when he was coaching for the Astros he lost to the Tampa Bay Rays and was eliminated in game 7 during the American League Championship Series.

In 2021 his second season with the Astros, right after taking the helm from manager A.J Hinch and the much-publicized cheating scandal. He took that Astros team to the World Series only to lose to the Atlanta Braves in six games. At 73 years old, Dusty is now the oldest manager ever to win a World Series.

Before Dusty, it was Jack McKeon who managed the Marlins of 2003 and won the World Series at the age of 72. The Houston players are grateful and happy for Dusty Baker. He took them into a new era of Houston Astros baseball. José Altuve who was basically booed by fans all over the country, every time he came to the plate, for the cheating scandal that began in 2017.

There is the one player that was with the Astros during their bad years and then MLB conducted an investigation in 2019 after two Astros players claimed they were stealing signs. The Astros players and organization feel today like Dusty Baker was exactly the type of man they need at the helm to bring them to the ‘promised land’ and he did.

José Altuve currently has the longest tenure wearing an Astros uniform, he was with the team in 2012 when the team was in the National League Central division and they ended with a 55-107 record and the next season 2013 (the first year the Astros moved from the NL to the American League) as they ended with a dreadful record of 51-111.

After Dusty Baker, nobody enjoys this World Series Championship more than the veteran José Altuve, who called this title “a dream come true”. Altuve is the only player that was with the Astros during those very bad seasons in two different leagues. He was celebrating and happy for Dusty Baker who said “Houston is my town”.

Like many managers, Dusty had to endure all the criticism for his decisions. Dusty who was an excellent player in the majors for 19 seasons, was facing a different type of criticism as a manager. Some were brutal commentaries by prominent baseball writers of national acclaim, especially during the 2002 World Series, where Dusty’s Giants lost to the Anaheim Angels. I remember reading one; “Dusty cannot manage a bullpen”.

Today Johnnie B. “Dusty” Baker, who was born in 1949 and in 1967 was selected in the 26th round of the MLB Draft. He has been involved in baseball for the majority of his 73 years on this planet, as a player and as a manager, and is rejoicing with his players and having all the fun in the world.

Sometimes we sarcastically say “this could not have happened to a better person”, but in Dusty Baker’s case, it is true “this could not have happened to a better person”. I have been privileged to cover his career as a player and a manager. One word comes to mind that best describes the essence of this man….honesty. No wonder every player wants to play for Dusty.

Bravo Dusty!

“Play Better Football”: Frustrated Cal can’t keep up with No. 9 USC in 41-35 loss

By Morris Phillips

Justin Wilcox has had enough of close games, narrow losses and explaining the shortcomings to the media after games.

From the California coach’s perspective, his guys are capable. Add to that, the USC coaching staff admitted the Trojans play left them vulnerable to a loss Saturday night, and they were fortunate to escape with a 41-35 win at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

That left Wilcox to issue terse, brief responses and basically ignore a critical sequence before halftime in which Jeremiah Hunter was blatantly held while running a deep pattern. That caused Jake Plummer to overthrow his pass to Hunter that was picked off by USC’s Caleb Bullock. Three plays later the Trojans were in the end zone, and in possession of their first, two-score lead of the night, 20-7 heading into halftime.

“I can’t really talk about the officials,” Wilcox said. “We needed something more at the end of the first half.

“We need to play better football so we can win some of these games.”

The Bears were playing better football, forcing the high-octane USC offense to punt four times before halftime. Down just 13-7 approaching the half, Cal found itself in a winnable game without–to that juncture–having exploited the Trojans’ less than stellar defense.

Bullock’s critical interception, accelerated the pace, and allowed quarterback Caleb Williams to find his stride. Williams’ 39-yard pass play to Tahj Washington set the Trojans up at Cal’s 7-yard line, and they punched it in on the next play when Williams hooked up with Michael Jackson III on a diving catch in the end zone.

Cal’s three-and-out to start the second half simply increased the pressure on the defense that had held up so well early. Four plays later, the Cal defense broke when Jackson caught a short pass, slipped linebacker Oluwafemi Oladejo and was off to the races. Jackson’s 59-yard scoring play put USC up 27-7.

The 20-point margin forced Cal to take chances in the pass game, and that approach worked with the Trojans’ defense finally showing its warts. After a scoreless, second quarter that essentially decided the outcome, Jack Plummer made the game competitive with a passing performance that would see him throw for 406 yards and three scores.

The Bears got within 34-21 with 12:56 remaining when Plummer connected with Mavin Anderson on a 47-yard pass play. Four minutes later, Hunter’s three-yard touchdown catch had Cal down 34-27.

Jackson was the catalyst again on USC’s ensuing drive. His 29-yard catch, and 19-yard run put the hosts in Cal territory. Four plays later Williams found Lake McRee for a two-yard touchdown pass that put the game out of reach at 41-27 with 5:34 remaining.

After a slow start, Williams finished with 26 completions for 360 yards and four touchdowns. For the No. 9 Trojans, who harbor championship aspirations, Williams was the good news.

Really disappointing,” USC defensive coordinator Alex Grinch said. “It’s a 60-minute football game. That’s not new. The nice thing is we sit here today as frustrated as we are and it’s after a win.”

“If you’re winning, you’re doing more good than bad, right?” head coach Lincoln Riley said. “We just got to continue to do more good. And we gotta continue to eliminate some of the bad football that has held us back from playing our best.”

The Bears have suffered one score losses to Notre Dame, Colorado, Washington and USC. Their last win: September 24 over Arizona. Five, consecutive losses frame Wilcox’s frustration.

“Execute at a higher level move the ball and put it in the end zone, get people off the field. Yeah, we know USC is a great team, phenomenal talent, top speed. But the evidence.. you got to show them on the tape,” Wilcox said.

The Bears (3-6, 1-5) travel to Corvallis Saturday to face Oregon State (6-3, 3-3) who undoubtedly will fall from the national rankings after their narrow 24-21 loss to the Huskies on Friday.
