That’s Amaury News and Commentary: A’s Fans might need Reparations

A’s Fans might need Reparations

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

In my last article, I wrote about the “new” or unfamiliar words we have not seen or used in the English language in recent memory. Well, the way the Oakland A’s (2-7) are playing this season, so far, one of those words comes into my mind; r e p a r a t i o n s, a word that is all over the news these days.

If anything the last Saturday and Sunday in Tampa where the A’s were shut out in back-to-back days with the same score 11-0 might be enough at least if not reparations for the A’s fans (all joking aside) mitigate their pain and suffering with some free promotions for games at home.

Forget they might move, they are still in Oakland and they’re still the Oakland A’s, as they have been since 1968. In the recent three games at Tropicana Field, the Tampa Bay Rays (9-0) outscored the A’s 31 to 5.

True, the Tampa Bay Rays have started the season with a red-hot 9-0 record, which is the best start in a season for a team in the wild-card era. Tampa Bay is the only unbeaten team so far in 2023, During a 162-game season there is no weak team or invincible team.

But let’s also remember the Rays’ 9-0 record to start this season has been against three of the less talented teams in all of baseball. Opening the season at home in Tropicana Fields, they faced Detroit, Washington, and Oakland, so they swept all 3-game series and open this week on top of the major league world.

The Rays also matched the best start to a major league season in 20 years and outscored the opponents 75-19, the most runs scored so far this season while allowing the fewest. The last team to win the first nine games of a season where the Kansas City Royals in 2003.

The Rays have won each and every one of those nine games by four or more runs and they trailed only a 13-game run by the 1884 St. Louis Maroons of the Union Association.

The A’s left Tampa on a 2 hours and 15 minutes flight to Baltimore, where they will open a four-game series against the much improved Orioles, before returning home and facing the New York Mets on April 14.

The Orioles in 2022 outperform in many ways (previous season ended 52-110) but last season with an 83-79 record, and a .512 winning percentage and finished the season in fourth place in that very competitive American League East division, where the Yankees, Red Sox, Tampa Bay, and Toronto play, considered the strongest division in the game.

The Baltimore Orioles leader is their young 25-year-old catcher Adley Rutschman, who was the #1 Pick in the 2019 baseball draft, he is the man among men in this Orioles team that are poised to get better with many young and talented players.

The A’s will play the Orioles in Baltimore in a 4-game series and then return to Oakland where they will open a 6-game home-stand, three games against the New York Mets, starting Friday the 14th of April, to be followed by three games against the Chicago Cubs.

Mfeka And Formella’s Performance Too Much For Indy XI As The Oakland Roots Win 3-0

Lindo Mfeka dribbling before his goal Photo From Oakland Roots Instagram

By Troy Ewers

Indianapolis is the home for today’s contest between the Oakland Roots and Indy XI and the Roots’ fire hasn’t cooled down from its last game, it only got hotter. This game was complete domination from whistle to whistle and the domination was led by two guys. Lindo Mfeka and Dariusz Formella. Indianapolis would end up shutting out the Roots 3-0 on Saturday.

The first goal was Formella sending a risky pass to Mfeka, but with risk comes reward sometimes and Mfeka challenged the goalie who left the box to contest the pass and Mfeka beat him out, receiving the ball past the goalkeeper, and finishing the play off with a wide open goal. 1-0 Roots.

The second goal was a result of sloppy play from Indy XI’s back line and a bad pass got intercepted by Mfeka. His shot would get blocked by the goalkeeper, but it was quickly cleaned up by Formella as he had a wide open shot of his own. 2-0 Roots.

The game was in the hands of Oakland the whole way through, but in the closing minutes, Joseph Nane made a risky pass of his own that was received beautifully by Edgardo Rito who would do a brilliant chip in shot over the goalkeeper and that was the nail in Indy XI’s coffin, the final whistle blew, and the Oakland Roots win.

This game was a clear statement to the USL that if you want to compete against this Roots team, you can’t be sloppy, because the attack in this game was apparent. It was a total 180 to the season opener and that’s great, because if you have that fast of growth in three games, hopes should be high for this season.

The next match for Oakland is April 15th in Hayward at CSU East Bay against Hartford and this momentum for the Roots is only going to ignite the die hard fans that show up to the Oakland games.

Final Home Game Shows An Example Of Whole Season As Sharks Lose To Oilers 6-1

The San Jose Sharks right wing Adam Raska (57) poke checking Edmonton Oilers defenceman Phillip Broberg (86) at SAP Center in San Jose on Sat Apr 8, 2023 Photo From San Jose Sharks Instagram

By Troy Ewers

It was the final game here at SAP for the 2022-2023 season and it was an example of what the whole year was for the San Jose Sharks (22-41-16). In the beginning of the game it seemed like the Sharks could keep up with their opponent, but by the end, the Edmonton Oilers (48-23-9) the better team would prevail 6-1 and the San Jose supporters would leave not as happy.

This game was just a final example of this pattern and if you don’t believe it was a pattern, the Sharks home record would beg to differ. 8-22-11 at the tank this season, the worst home record in franchise history. The SAP Center used to be a nightmare for opponents, because for years it was a true home ice advantage, between the energy of the fans and the players, teams would say “If you can’t shut them up in San Jose in the first ten minutes they won’t stop.”

The game itself today was exciting in the beginning with a sell out crowd filled with fans of both squads. The first period was back and forth display as the Oilers got on the board first from a goal by Nugent-Hopkins (Assisted by Hyman and McDavid, but two minutes later, the Sharks fired right back off a goal courtesy of Tomas Hertl with an assist from Jacob Petersen, who in pre game was the topic of discussion as one of the rising stars in San Jose.

The first period would end 2-1 when two minutes before the end of the period, Connor McDavid got his 63rd goal of the year and from this point on the game would only spiral out of the teal team’s control goal after goal. McDavid would get a second goal on the night, three points total, which means he leaves San Jose with a wild 151 points, even Coach Quinn says in his post game interview he’s “never seen a season like this.”

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins would leave with 3 points as well (1 goal, 2 assists) and the rest of the points would come from Evan Bouchard (2 assists), Derek Ryan (1 goal,1 assist), Mattias Ekholm(1 assist), Zach Hyman (1 assist, 1 goal), Leon Draisaitl (1 assist), Warren Foegele (1 assist), and Phillip Broberg (1 goal).

The better question would be who didn’t get a point for Edmonton in this game and that’s Evander Kane , who every time when he touched the puck he received boos that could be heard through noise cancellation headphones, but he would walk away with last laugh as the final seconds ticked down and the game was over, Edmonton.

Both Hertl and Couture said in their post game interviews that they wish they could send the fans home happy, but in the end the result is the result. Next season everyone on this team is under evaluation and the future of this roster might have some big changes coming, but one thing remains the same for the San Jose Sharks, this team is even in its rebuilding stage is going to give you great moments and this season was no different.

Erik Karlsson putting on a historic season, Mike Greir’s inaugural season, Doug Wilson night, William Eklund’s first goal, and Patrick Marleau’s number being retired all were silver linings in a stormy San Jose season and as the off season approaches, the front office has a lot of questions to be answered.

The Sharks have three more games left all on the road in Canada in Winnipeg Sunday, in Calgary on Wednesday, and Thursday in Edmonton to conclude the 2022-23 season.

No Mercy rule A’s blanked by Tampa Bay 11-0 at Tropicana; Rays best MLB start in 20 years at 8-0

A’s Blanked By Tampa Bay 11-0

By Barbara Mason

Saturday afternoon the Oakland A’s (2-6) played the Tampa Bay Rays (8-0) in game two of their three game series. Friday Oakland dropped game one 9-5 amid a flurry of Ray home runs. The A’s did have more hits than Tampa Bay did but they had trouble stringing hits together and bringing runners home. They were looking to even the series Saturday but were lambasted by the Rays in an 11-0 laugher at Tropicana Field in St Petersburg.

This game was scoreless through three innings. In the fourth inning the Rays got a couple of runs off a single from Isaac Paredes sending Brandon Lowe and Wander Franco home for a 2-0 lead.

Tampa Bay began to pile it on in the fifth and sixth innings. They scored seven times taking a 9-0 lead. A Randy Arozarena single brought Manuel Margot and Francisco Mejia home and the Rays were just getting started. Brandon Lowe would score his second run of the game when Paredes was hit by a pitch.

This gave the Rays a 5-0 lead. The sixth inning did not get any better for the Oakland defense giving up another four runs. Tampa Bay had a couple of home runs; one a solo from Margot and another from B. Lowe with two runners on base for the 9-0 lead.

In the eighth inning the Rays had their third home run of the game courtesy of Arozarena with a runner on base for the final 11-0 score. This was the eighth win a row for the Rays to start the season.

The A’s could only manage three hits in this game. They sent ace Shintaro Fujinami to the mound going 4.1 innings allowing three hits and five earned runs. Oakland would send four relief pitchers to the mound in the losing effort.

Tomorrow the A’s will finish up this series in Tampa Bay. James Kaprielian will take the mound for the A’s and for Tampa Bay Drew Rasmussen will get the nod. First pitch is scheduled for 10:10 AM.

Royals rally for five unanswered runs leaves Giants undone 6-5

W.C. Fields once observed, “There comes a time in a man’s life when he must grab the bull by the tail and look the situation squarely in the face.” This afternoon’s debacle at Oracle Park was one of those times.

Sean Manea pitched seven beautiful innings against the Kansas Ciiy Royals. The Throwin’ Samoan kept the visitors off the board for five frames until Bobby Witt, Jr. led off the sixth with a 384 foot blast into left center off an 82 mph changeup.

He proceeded to set the next three batters down in order. At that point, the Giants were leading, 5-1 , thanks to a four run outburst in the third, sparked by LaMonte Wade, Jr. ‘s lead off round tripper off Bradiy Singer, KC’ s starting pitcher.

Wade’s dinger travelled 394 feet into right field and was his first home run since August 17th of last year. Michael Conforto’s single and a double by J.D. Davis put both of them in scoring position. The former came home on Joc Pederson’s sac fly to left, and the latter crossed the plate on a single by Thairo Estrada, also to left.

San Franciso tacked on another tally in sixth on an Estrada two bagger and an RBI single by Brandon Crawford, who was thrown out at second trying to stretch his safety, ending the inning.

At that point, Manea had thrown six innings of three hit ball, including Witt’s shot that accounted for KC’s only run, which was earned. The ex-Athletic righty had struck out eight, against one walk and a hit batter. That’s when the Giants’ fortunes changed. 54 of his 76 pitches were counted as strikes.

And that’s where the home team’s troubles began. The SF brain trust called on Ross Stripling, who had been announced on Friday as today’s probable starter, to pitch a little set up relief. It was no relief, and it felt as if the Giants had been set up by fate.

At the time, Franmil Reyes’s lead off homer looked like a little glitch in the radar, just one of those things. But his four bagger, his second of the year, was an omen.

With two out in the eighth, four outs away from a 5-2 Giants win, Edward Olivares and M.J. Meléndez hit back to back singles, bringing up the power hitting all-star catch, Salvador Pérez, the only member of the Kansas City team the Giants had defeated in the 2014 World Series still active with the team. He got a modicum of revenge by taking Stripling’s 88 mph splitter 375 feet deep into left center and turning what looked like a sure Giant victory into a 5-5 tie.

John Brebbia ended the onslaught, and Camilo Doval opened the ninth, trying to prevent further damage. Vinnie Pasquantino opened with a two base hit. Nate Eaton pinch ran for him. For a short while, it looked as if The Curse of the Lead Off Double would do its work.

Michael Massey popped out to Crawford, and Hunter Dozier grounded out to third, allowing Eaton to advance to that base. Then, with Kyle Isbel at bat, Brebbia decided to try a new pitch he’d been working on, a change up. It got past Blake Sabol, the catcher, who recovered it almost in time to tag the head first sliding Eaton, who just managed to score the leading and eventually tying run.

The Giants’ last ditch attempt to salvage the day was brief. Arnoldis Chapman got Wilmer Flores to swing at and miss a 100 mph fastball for the first out. A pinch hitting David Villar was retired on a pop foul to first, and Conforto fell victim to an 89 mph slider for a called third strike.

Taylor Clarke, who pitched the eighth for Kansas City, got the win, making his record 1-0, 5.40. Chapman got the save, his first of the year. He’s yet to be scored upon. And, of course, Doval was charged with the loss. His record now stands at 0-1, 6.00.

The so far one sided series will resume Sunday afternoon at 1:05. Left handed Kris Bubic (0-1, 3.60) is slated to go up against righty Anthony DeSclafani (1-0,0.00).

Racial slur accusation overshadows Earthquakes and Red Bulls 1-1 draw

San Jose Earthquakes celebrate Christian Espinoza’s goal in the second half against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena on Saturday APR 7, 2023. (San Jose Earthquakes)

by Marko Ukalovic

An alleged racial slur used by one of the New York Red Bulls marred the match between the San Jose Earthquakes and the New York Red Bulls that ended in a 1-1 draw on Saturday evening at Red Bull Arena.

After a foul by Judson on Dylan Nealis in the 54th minute, the game was delayed by 18 minutes after a incident between Dante Vanzeir and Jeremy Ebobbise took place. Vanzeir was the player who allegedly used the racial slur toward one of the Quakes players.

Played resumed in the 72nd minute without any further disciplinary action by the officials.

San Jose (3-2-2) scored in the 80th minute when Carlos Gruezo sent in a long ball over to Christian Espinoza along the right wing. Espinoza made one move to the inside before firing a shot into the back of the net for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Espinoza has scored the last four goals for the ‘Quakes.

Due to the long delay, 21 minutes was added to the end of the second half.

The Red Bulls scored the equalizer in the 17th minute of stoppage when Tom Barlow cleaned up a rebound from close range for his first goal of the season.

Ebobbise was emotional after the game regarding the incident on the field.

“First of all, it’s a difficult game when we play the Red Bulls. We have a lot of respect for their style of play. We understand there is going to be a lot of duels and they go strong into the duels. At times, that results in late tackles on our end, and then on their end. That’s all part of the game. What we saw tonight should not be part of the game. I can’t correlate the various actions or the timeline that I’m going to lay out, but with what started with a foul that was being committed by Judson, fast forward a few minutes, seconds, and it ended with a racial epithet being used. Now, I understand there is going to be an investigation. I’ve been a part of those. I’ve had to support teammates through them. I have seen them, so I want to be mindful of that even as I share. I think what’s important for me to share is that I know what I heard. And the reason why I felt, after a lengthy conversation, that we should continue with the game is because the player who said the word claimed that it was not aimed at any of us. Whether that is a good faith comment or not, again, we’ll see how the investigation goes on. It’s just a difficult moment. Once again, players being put in charge, forced to make a decision, manage all sorts of emotions because the system is not robust enough to capture moments and gain clarity within a matter of minutes, seconds that these actions happen. I think what’s important is that the team was united in whichever step we move forward with. And that goes top to bottom, from coaches to players,” Ebobbise said.

‘Quakes head coach Luchi Gonzalez praised his team for how they handled themselves during and after the alleged incident.

“It’s unfortunate that the players and people near and on the field had to experience a 20-minute moment where, I can’t speak factually, but when I listen to my players in terms of what was said or not said, or who it was directed to, there are things that are unacceptable and very unfortunate, very disappointing, that take precedent over the game we play. I have to be really proud of our players to be together in solidarity, to talk, to decide and to obviously not accept what they heard. I don’t know what the next step is. I would hope the league will take this serious to the max degree in terms of an investigation and there being consequences, potentially indefinite consequences if the investigation supports what are players understood as being true. We as a club, myself as the head coach, and the staff are going to support the players, any step moving forward that the players want to act on, and we hope and count on the league, and the referee crew as well, in terms of investigating, coming down to the truth so that there can be actions that, don’t make it right, that’s for sure, but at least show that it’s unacceptable and the league will act on that based on our standard as a society and as being a top professional league in this country. Unfortunately, the game is in a shadow because of that situation because it’s less important.”

Both teams and MLS are aware of the incident that took place, and the league said in a statement that it will launch an investigation into the matter.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished the match with four corner kicks. New York had five.

The Quakes are now 17-15-10 all-time vs. the New York Red Bulls, including an 4-11-7 record on the road. The result snaps a four-match losing streak against the club.

UP NEXT: San Jose returns home to host Sporting Kansas City on Saturday 4/15 at 7:30pm at Pay Pal Park.

SAN JOSE- The final home game for the San Jose Barracuda did not go to plan against Colorado Eagles ending in a shutout as the Eagles swooped in with a 4-0 victory.

Aaron Dell got his second start in a row against Colorado while Justus Annunen started for the Eagles.

The first period saw the Eagles control most of the play with two penalties being called one against each team.

Colorado’s pressure did get rewarded as Mitchell Vande Sompel scored his fourth goal of the season making it a 1-0 game.

A little after the goal some punches were thrown as Will Riedell and Alex Beaucage dropped the gloves.

At the end of the first the shots favored Colorado at 14-6.

In the second period early on San Jose was given a power play opportunity as Alex Galchenyuk was called for delay of game. However the power play unit could not get setup and came up empty handed once again.

Less than five minutes after the power play a familiar face got another goal as Sompel scored his second of the game making it 2-0.

Throughout the period the Barracuda got multiple high quality chances but could just not convert as they left the middle frame empty handed.

At the end of the second the shots favored San Jose 25-20.

Heading into the third San Jose needed a big goal to get back into the game. Unfortunately for the Barracuda though Colorado locked it down in the final period.

With the grey and teal still pushing they pulled Dell to get back into it but Charles Hudon scored on the empty net making it 3-0.

San Jose pulled Dell one more time and Colorado got another goal this time Sampo Ranta finished getting his 11th of the season.

With the buzzer going off not only did the Eagles win but Annunen got a 33 save shutout his first of the season.

The three stars of the game were: 1st: Justus Annunen 2nd: Mitchell Vande Sompel 3rd: Sam Malinski

“It’s unfortunate I don’t think it was a four nothing game the way we played we still played pretty well but you know that happens,” Andrew Agozzino said after the game.

San Jose heads into their final two games of the season just three points out of a playoff spot. In order to make it they’ll have to beat the Tucson Roadrunners twice in regulation.

So these final two games of the season for the Barracuda will be do or die.

The first game between the two teams will be on April 14th in Tucson at 7 p.m.
