MLB The Show podcast with Charlie O:

#1 The London Series is underway with the Chicago Cubs and the St Louis Cardinals matching up this weekend. It’s got to be an important series with MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred in attendance as he’s trying to boost the MLB brand in Europe.

#2 The Tampa Bay Rays Wander Franco who has expressed frustration by breaking a bat in the Rays dugout and not running out ground balls was sent home on Thursday night and benched on Friday night was back in the line up on Saturday and admitted that the organization is trying to get control of his frustrations and he admitted making errors that got away from him. Franco is hitting .287 and is in the second season of his $182 million contract.

#3 Charlie what can you say about the Cincinnati Reds that hasn’t already been said. The Red Legs are on a 12 game win streak and Elly De La Cruz’s cycle on Friday night added to the success the club has been having. The Reds are in first in the NL Central by 1.5 games on second place the Milwaukee Brewers.

#4 The Los Angeles Angels enhanced their infield up the middle acquiring Eduardo Escobar from the New York Mets for pitchers Coleman Crow and Landon Marceaux, who were 19 and 20th in the Angels system. Escobar’s $9 million contact will be picked up by the Mets at the pro rated MLB minimum. 2024 is an option year for Escobar.

#5 MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred who is attending the London Series this weekend as we spoke about earlier said that one big turnout for the Oakland A’s on Tue Jun 23 at the Oakland Coliseum doesn’t solve a “decade of inaction” referring to the fans reverse boycott and is waiting for the A’s to submit their relocation application in preparation for an owners vote that requires a 75% yes vote. Eight no votes can turn the tide for the A’s moving to Vegas.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Stephen Ruderman: Matos, Bailey, and Schmitt rookies who have changed the clubhouse

San Francisco Giants’ Luis Matos gestures after hitting a two-run home run against the Arizona Diamondbacks during the sixth inning at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Sun Jun 25, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the San Francisco Giants podcast with Stephen:

The San Francisco Giants who had a ten game winning streak had it come to an end on Thursday by getting clobbered 10-0 but came right back on Friday and Saturday with win over the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Giants have now won 12 out of their last 13 games.

In the two games on the Giants played those games very well and the Giants ended up on top and it shows and it showed the Giants have what it takes to compete with the best teams in baseball.

As far as pitching is concerned the Giants could very well have the best eighth and ninth inning pitching staff in baseball with relievers Tyler Rogers and Comilo Doval. Rogers throwing the submarine pitch and then there’s Doval with his 100 MPH cutter no better combo than that.

Everyone knows since the Giants have called up Casey Schmitt, Patrick Bailey and Luis Motas and they’ve really solved the chemistry in the clubhouse and a lot of times you could tell in spring training on how things are going to go by the mood of the clubhouse.

Oakland Roots Draw Phoenix Rising 1-1

By Tony Ewers

In the rivalry game between Oakland and Phoenix, it was a game that was a battle all the way to the final minute where both teams scored their goals in the final ten minutes. It started with both teams having scoring attempts in the first ten minutes, but neither seeing the back of the net as the Roots and Rising Sun play to a 1-1 draw.

Possession was equal 50% as they traded shot attempts through 30 minutes of action. At that point the game saw nothing, but fouls for 10 minutes and from there the back and forth was like that for the remainder of the half with no actual moment where it looked either team had the upper hand.

The second half went more in a defensive direction for the Roots, but in the 82nd minute Dariusz Formella would hit a shot off the right foot in the goal, 1-0 Oakland! The defensive direction of the Roots was working, the Phoenix Rising missed six shots except one.

In the 93rd minute, a header from Manuel Arteaga in the box went past Paul Blanchett and it was the equalizer that sealed this draw for Oakland. This would be the Roots third draw in a row and Coach Delgado says “We’ve been leading in two of those games. Moments of the game, especially when we begin to close out the season – learning how to close out games, starting out well, that’s important.”

This Formella’s sixth goal of the season and second against Phoenix this season and he’s the top goal scorer for the Roots at the moment. The next game for Oakland is next week against Rio Grande Valley Toros and this their second time facing each other.

That game was also a draw, but Oakland needs a win, because the season is moving fast and each team has to kick it in higher gear to secure top spots in the table.

Earthquakes lose hard fought match against St. Louis 2-1

Photo courtesy of San Jose Earthquakes.

By Titus Wilkinson (@TitusWisme)

SAN JOSE- At home the Earthquakes came up just short against St. Louis despite leading in many metrics losing by a final of 2-1.

For the Earthquakes Daniel de Sousa Brito was in goal while for St. Louis Roman Bürki was in net.

San Jose came out with a little bit of a different formation today starting in a 4-2-3-1 while St. Louis was in a 4-1-2-1-2.

The first attempt of this match came at the 11 minute mark as Aziel Jackson forced Brito to make a save early.

After that San Jose would rally back with two attempts of their own one from Jamiro Monteiro and the other from Jeremy Ebobisse but both were saved.

At the 30 minute mark Jackson would get his second attempt on net of the first half but once again Brito was up to the challenge.

Then at the 40 minute mark St. Louis was awarded a corner that was conceded by Daniel which lead to Rasmus Alm taking the corner. It was a good one as he got it right to Samuel Adeniran who headed it in making it 1-0.

San Jose was not able to formulate a response in the first half but early on in the second they would do just that. The goal came due to sloppy work by St. Louis on their side of the field. That turnover lead to Jackson Yueill taking the ball and giving it to Ebobisse who tapped it smoothly over to Jamiro Monteiro and with a right footed shot it was tied up again 1-1.

Though Monteiro apparently showed a little to much jubilation after the goal as he was handed a yellow for excessive celebration.

That happiness was short-lived for San Jose as at the 55 minute mark as Jonathan Mensah was called for a foul in the penalty area on none other than Jackson. Taking the penalty would be Adeniran who made not mistake depositing the ball in the back of the net giving St. Louis the lead right back 2-1.

Jackson was also given a yellow only a minute after his goal but that was for a bad foul.

Towards the end of the match the Earthquakes made a real push to tie the game back up as both Carlos Akapo and Cristian Espinoza had good looks.

San Jose was given an additional nine minutes of extra time but both attempts from Rodrigues and Tommy Thompson were saved as St. Louis held on to win.

As previously mentioned the stats in this match favored San Jose in many areas as possession was in their favor at 62.9% to 37.1%. Shots also were in their favor at 14-9 and they managed to nine of those on target.

San Jose’s next game will be the Cali Clasico against LA Galaxy on Saturday July 1st at 7:30 p.m.

Aces Push Season Record to 12-1 With Win Over Fever 101-88

Aces Push Season Record to 12-1 With Win Over Fever 101-88

By Barbara Mason

Saturday night the Las Vegas Aces (12-1) took on the Indiana Fever (5-8) at Michelob ULTRA Arena and extended an already amazing season record with a 101-88 win over the Fever.

Las Vegas took a 27-20 lead in the first quarter after a bit of a slow start. They had a seven point lead after the first quarter and won the second quarter by seven points 30-23. At the half they had control of this game leading 57-43.

The Fever made some nice adjustments in the third quarter and were able to match the Aces with both teams scoring 21 points in the quarter. Matching Las Vegas was not to going to help their cause because of the 14 point deficit at the half. After three quarters the Aces continued to lead 78-64.

With five minutes left in the game, the Fever made a bit of a move but Las Vegas always answered. The Fever have challenged the Aces this season and this game was no exception. With 3 1/2 minutes left in the game, the Fever was trailing by 11 points 93-82.

When these two teams meet it is always a battle. With two minutes left it was an eleven point game and the outcome was still not a given. The Aces stubbornly hung onto a 13 point lead and with 1:16 left in the game, the Aces would extend their season record to 12-1.

Every starter for the Aces had a double digit game. The high for the Fever was Nalyssa Smith with 26 points but they were just unable to handle Las Vegas.

A’Ja Wilson had yet another double-double with ten rebounds and 28 points. Kelsey Plum was right on her heels with 26 points. Jackie Young had a bit of a slow night but as we have seen time and time again, when one player has a bit of an off game, the rest of the team is there to pick them up. That is the depth of the Las Vegas Aces.

There will be no rest for the Fever. These two teams will meet again on Monday night in Las Vegas. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

On the Warriors podcast with David Zizmor:

#1 David how important was it for Golden State to pick up long time veteran Chris Paul from the Phoenix Suns and how do you see him fitting in.

#2 I know you talked about Jordan Poole during the post season and said his just couldn’t get his game going and it was as if he was just there but not there. Did the Draymond Green punch from the beginning of the season play into his mental make up or there was enough water under that bridge for him to make that up and get with the program?

#3 David talk about the Warriors draft picks and how they’ll help out for next season.

Oakland A’s podcast with Barbara Mason: A’s drop ninth out of last ten games

Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette (11) is unable to make a tag on Oakland Athletics Jace Peterson (6) during the second inning at Rogers Centre in Toronto on Sat Jun 24, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the A’s podcast with Barbara Mason:

#1 Saturday the A’s (20-59) were looking to take game two of their series against the Toronto Blue Jays (42-36). Shintaro Fujinami was the starter but he didn’t last even one inning allowing four hits and two runs in less than an inning of work.

#2 Hogan Harris took over on the mound. As the Blue Jays turned up the offense and came away with a four run 7-3 win at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

#3Toronto took a 5-2 lead going into the sixth inning. From the start of this game, the A’s were behind the eight ball. Oakland got a run in the second inning off a solo home run from Seth Brown. The A’s got a second run in the third inning when Ryan Noda doubled Tony Kemp home for the two runs.

#4 The Jays Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had a far different mindset hitting a 437 feet long ball with Brandon Belt on base taking a 7-3 lead.

#5  Luis Medina (1-6) will be on the mound for Oakland looking to improve his win/loss record as well as his ERA which stands at 7.01. The Blue Jays will be going with Yusei Kikuchi (6-2 ERA 3.97). First pitch is at 10:37 AM PT.

A’s Drop Game Two Against Blue Jays 7-3 To Even Series

A’s Drop Game Two Against Blue Jays 7-3 To Even Series

By Barbara Mason

Saturday the A’s (20-59) were looking to take game two of their series against the Toronto Blue Jays (42-36). Shintaro Fujinami was the starter but he didn’t last even one inning allowing four hits and two runs in less than an inning of work. Hogan Harris took over on the mound. As the Blue Jays turned up the offense and came away with a four run 7-3 win at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Toronto took a 5-2 lead going into the sixth inning. From the start of this game, the A’s were behind the eight ball. Oakland got a run in the second inning off a solo home run from Seth Brown. The A’s got a second run in the third inning when Ryan Noda doubled Tony Kemp home for the two runs.

In the sixth inning Oakland scored another run but still trailed 5-3. Tyler Wade singled Jace Pederson home and the A’s were back in the game provided they could keep Toronto off the scoreboard.

The Jays Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had a far different mindset hitting a 437 feet long ball with Brandon Belt on base taking a 7-3 lead. That would be the final. The A’s had runners on second and third when the game ended.

What came out of this game was the lack of experience from a lot of these younger players. Mistakes that can only be cleaned up with experience, years of experience. The work on the mound from starter Fujinami was just awful and it set the tone for this game. Fujinami pitched just two thirds of innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs and was lifted.

Post game notes: Friday night Shea Langeliers hit the game winning homer. The game was tied at four when Langeliers knocked the ball out of the park in the ninth inning giving the A’s a 5-4 lead which they were able to hold onto. That game broke an eight game losing streak for Oakland.

The A’s had played some very competitive games in their last series against the Guardians. The first two games were one run losses, one game going into extra innings. The series before this one against the Phillies also was a tough one for Oakland . They lost two games in that series by a single run with one game going 12 innings. Four painfully close games with the A’s coming up short.

Now that this series with Toronto is even, the A’s will try to take game three and win the series Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 10:37 AM. Luis Medina (1-6) will be on the mound for Oakland looking to improve his win/loss record as well as his ERA which stands at 7.01. The Blue Jays will be going with Yusei Kikuchi (6-2 ERA 3.97).

SAN FRANCISCO–In 1948, it was Spahn and Sain and pray for two days of rain. In 2023 it’s Logan, Webb, Cobb,,DeScalfani, and the bullpen. Until recently, the designated opener was John Brebbia He’s now passed the baton to Ryan Walker, who opened for San Francisco three days ago against San Diego three days ago in the game that capped the Giants’ recent ten game winning streak.

Today, the 12th time this season that San Francisco has used an opener Walker, as was expected, was on the mound for only one frame. What was unexpected is that he surrendered a run and left two men on base when he left. Nonetheless, The Giants defeated the snake bitten nine from Phoenix in a nail biter, 7-6.

Merrill Kelly, Arizona’s starting pitcher, is no opener. Coming to work today, he was 9-3, 2.90 on the year. He had gone seven innings in four of his starts and six or more another seven. By 2023 standards, that Iron Man Joe McGinnity stuff. He lasted five frames this afternoon, throwing 87 pitches, 51 for strikes. He allowed seven runs, five of them earned, on ten hits, including a tie breaking home run, and two walks and a hit batter. He took the loss and now is 9-4, 3.22.

Ketel Marte got things going early for the D-Backs. He took a one out, 1-1 hanging slider deep, bouncing it off the brick wall in right field, 337 feet from home for a home run that put Arizona ahead 1-0 before the Giants had seen even one of Kelly’s offerings.

When they did, the home team turned the tables on their guests. LaMonte Wade, Jr. defied The Curse of the Lead Off Double, smacking one to center. Thairo Estrada followed him, lifting a lazy fly to center, where it clunked off Corbin Carroll’s glove for an error that put men on the corners. Two outs later, Michael Conforto’s two bagger to left scored both runners and put SF ahead, 2-1.

When Arizona came to bat in the second, Keaton Winn, who had thrown five brilliant innings in last Monday’s bullpen game against the Padres, was on the mound for San Francisco. He held Arizona scoreless through the fourth, but small ball drove him from the mound in the fifth, and he was replaced by Sean Manaea.

The men from McCovey Cove tacked on another tally in the third on Joc Pederson’s single to left, a walk to Conforto, and Blake Sabol’s RBI single to left.

Jake McCarthy led off the top of the fifth by beating out a bunt single between the mound and the plate. The D-Backs’ left fielder then stole his 16th base in 19 attempts. Perdomo got another infield single, giving Arizona runners on the corners. Marte’s single to right brought in McCarthy and moved Perdomo to second.

That’s when Sean Manaea entered the fray. He got Carroll to hit a grounder to Crawford, who was late getting to second and second base umpire and crew chief Alan Porter ruled Marte safe. San Francisco challenged the call but to no avail. Carroll’s double to center brought both runners home. Then Manaea retired the side. But the damage was done, and Arizona was ahead, 5-3.

But not for long. Estrada began the Giants’ fifth with a single to left. Pederson’s triple to right drove him in, making it 5-4. After Davis fanned, Conforto drew a walk and Sabol’s sacrifice fly to center tied things up.

Luke Jackson began the visitors’ sixth for the Giants. He gave up a single to Carson Kelly and then left the game with lower back stiffness. His replacement, Taylor Rogers, held Arizona to a bunt single by Perdomo to preserve the tie.

San Francisco leaped ahead in the bottom of the inning on Crawford’s lead off single to center and Matos’s two run blast into the left field bleachers, 354 feet from home. That ended Kelly’s work day. Kyle Nelson relieved him and closed out the inning by fanning Wade and Estrada and getting Pederson on a liner to left.

Tyler Rogers replaced his brother for the seventh and set the Diamondbacks down in order. He continued submarining into the eighth, when he struck. out the side.

José Ruíz set the Giants down in order in the eighth, setting the stage for Camilo Duval attempt his 22nd save in 24 attempts. Perdomo lined out to center. Marte drew a walk. Carroll popped out to Crawford, who had trouble with the. sun and the wind.

Marte took second on defensive indifference. Walker singled to right, Marte stopping at the third. Gurriel hit a soft grounder that just got past Davis, now at first, and drove in Marte. The Giants lead now was down to 7-6. Gurriel took second on a wild pitch to Smith. Then Smith struck out, and Doval got his save, and the Giants pulled within two and a half games of first place.

The two contenders will wrap up their series tomorrow afternoon at 1:05. Ryne Nelson (3-4, 5.31) will pitch for Arizona; Anthony DeScalfani (4-6, 4.38) for San Francisco.
