San Jose, CA – In CEFCU stadium, the San Jose State Spartans face the Oregon State Beavers and SJSU is coming off a loss last week from USC. Even though the score of that game wasn’t close, it was a big moment for the Spartans to put up four touchdowns on a top 10 ranked team. This game being their first home game of the season in their beautiful revamped facility that would be sure to impress a lot of recruits. A packed house with both Oregon State fans and hometown Spartan fans as we prepared for kickoff.

The first drive for SJSU went the distance, but they were stopped trying to convert on 3rd & 8, but Oregon State had a completely different tune to it. The Beavers went 11 plays and 82 yards for a touchdown to take the first lead of the game plus an extra point, 7-0 Oregon State.

In his second drive SJSU QB Chevan Cordeiro faced pressure from Oregon State’s defense and was rattled as they couldn’t convert on another drive, but they pinned the Beavers with a great punt. The first quarter closed out with Oregon State in the lead 7-0.

SJSU’s opening second quarter drive was way better than anything they strung together in the first with Cordeiro getting yards in the air and on foot, but once they got to the red zone, a penalty and an incompletion caused them to attempt a field goal for their first points of the game and they got it, 7-3. Oregon State’s quarterback DJ Uiagalelei gets his second touchdown, this one in the air with a 14 yard pass play and Oregon State goes up 14-3.

SJSU followed it up with another drive that didn’t result in a touchdown, but another punt and the Beavers received the ball with two minutes left in the first half. In those two minutes, Oregon State scored again on six plays going 60+ yards, which ended the first half with the Beavers up 21-3 on the Spartans. SJSU only converted on one third down in the first half, but the positive for the Spartans was that they had zero turnovers.

The second half started with the Beavers with the ball and it looked like they picked up right where they left off, but even after trying to convert on fourth down, SJSU finally stopped them and took over possession.

Oregon State’s scoring was right back on schedule with six minutes left in the third quarter, when QB Uiagalelei completed a 31 yard pass in the end zone and after the extra point was converted, Oregon State was up 28-3.

The rest of the third quarter was a combination of solid defense and effective offense by SJSU, even utilizing the clock while they were on offense. The third quarter ended with SJSU having the ball in the red zone after stringing together 20 yards with four plays.

The fifth play of that drive was the opening play of the fourth quarter and Chevan Cordeiro ran 2 yards into the end zone making the score, 28-10. The Spartans needed to cool down this Oregon State offense or else this game would be over before the fourth was even halfway done and Oregon State wasn’t going to be stopped.

The Beavers scored again after seven plays and 65 yards with Uiagalelei throwing his third touchdown pass, this one received by Anthony Gould for 28 yards, 35-10 Oregon State. San Jose State found themselves in a terrible spot where on the drive in the fourth quarter that would be the part where they can strike a comeback, but Cordeiro was sacked and then with 6:26 left in the game, the Beavers had the ball, seemingly ending the chance of the Spartans coming back and stealing a win.

Oregon State wasn’t done yet, they scored another touchdown with 3:13 left making the score 42-10, but the cut was deep and the majority of fans left in CEFCU stadium were in black and orange representing Oregon State.

The Spartans didn’t want to end this game without one more touchdown for their own confidence and backup QB Jay Butterfield completed a 19 yard pass to Brandon Alvarez with four seconds left in the game. The final seconds ticked and the horn blew for the end of the game and the Spartans lost 42-17 in their home opener. Chevan Cordeiro went 18/32 for 143 yards, but no passing touchdowns.

The Spartans lose back to back games to PAC-12 teams and start off 0-2. The next game for SJSU will be at home against Cal Poly, September 9th and San Jose State is hoping they can get their first win of the season, especially against a non PAC-12 team.

Pac 12 podcast with Michael Roberson: Cal and Stanford landing in ACC had to secure their futures

California quarterback Ben Finley (10) throws during the first half of an NCAA college football game against North Texas, Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, in Denton, Texas (AP News photo)

On the Pac 12 podcast with Michael Roberson:

#1 Cal and Stanford football leave the Pac 12 for the ACC what are some of the major changes in this move that they have to consider.

#2 The ACC has 18 teams with more additions. In women’s basketball they will see an increase in their travel to three time as much in the ACC. The nearest ACC school for Cal and Stanford is Louisville.

#3 The other big names big change is Cal and Stanford could see three times as much non conference games, three neutral games, four road games, five home games, 18 conference games, and three times as much non conference games.

#4 Some have criticized that geographically and logistically that this merge makes little sense. Is this just a matter of wait and see to see if this all works out.

#5 Stanford said on Friday after the announcement that 22 of it’s teams will have minimal scheduling changes and the majority of non basketball and football teams will be joining the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

#3 How about Angels shortstop Kyren Paris who made his MLB debut on Friday and batted ninth. Paris was thrilled playing in Oakland where he grew up in Oakley (48 miles from the Coliseum). “To play right here in the Coliseum is going to be special,” Paris said.

Earthquakes dominate but can’t finish in frustrating tie against Minnesota 1-1

SAN JOSE- In an important matchup against Minnesota the Earthquakes came out and fought to a tie 1-1.

Both teams came out in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Daniel in goal for San Jose while for Minnesota Dayne St. Clair was in between the pipes.

Many of the Earthquakes recent matches have been marked by slow starts and tonight would be no different. As just four minutes into the match on beautiful ball by Emanuel Reynoso he caught Teemu Puuki on a fast break. Pukki then caught and deposited the ball in the back of the net getting his second goal of the season.

That goal fueled more chances for Minnesota but thankfully Tanner Beason made a huge block and Daniel had a couple big saves keeping it at 1-0.

It did not take too long for San Jose to find a response as after a a corner kick at the 16th minute Jackson Yueill settled the ball and feed it to an open Cade Cowell. After a quick turn Cowell shot a ball that wasn’t particularly fast but seemed to had eyes for the net as it beat St. Clair to his right tying the game up at one.

The first half ended in a 1-1 tie and in the beginning of the second half San Jose’s offense came out flying. Chance after chance came at St. Clair but he could not be beaten. With his best save coming at the 66th minute when Jeremy Ebobisse got a header on from the dead centre in the box that he kept out.

Despite all the great chances Minnesota pushed back the other way and scored with Pukki once again finishing. However, the goal did go to review and was eventually called off for being a handball.

Daniel made another couple key saves towards the end of the second half totaling to six saves by the end of the match.

The game would end up in a 1-1 tie which for San Jose keeps them at eighth in the Western Conference standings with 36 points and -4 goal differential.

San Jose’s next match will be on the 9th against D.C. on the road at 4:30 p.m.

Aces Back On Track Winning Two in a Row; Punishing Seattle Storm 103-77

Read em and weep the Las Vegas Aces A’ja Wilson led with 30 points and 10 rebounds against the Seattle Storm at the Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas on Sat Sep 2, 2023 (@LVAces photo)

By Barbara Mason

Saturday night the Las Vegas Aces (32-6) took care of business against the Seattle Storm (11-26) on their home floor, Michelob ULTRA Arena with a 103-77 victory.

After trailing in the first quarter, the Aces went on a 5 and 0 run to take a 10-5 lead at 6:03. As the opening quarter came to an end Las Vegas led 25-19. As the regular season winds down it is clearly evident how much all of these teams have improved, all of them a threat. The Storm had a great defensive effort keeping the Aces out of the paint making life miserable for A’Ja Wilson.

At 7:17 in the second quarter this game was all square at 27-27. The Storm had nothing to lose as they continued to challenge the defending champions. The Storm’s Jewell Loyd was the first player hitting double digits as the Aces fought to contain her.

At the half the Aces had a 49-43 lead. A’Ja Wilson finished the half with 21 points and eight rebounds and the Storm’s Jewell Loyd had 20 in this highly competitive game.

The Aces continued to maintain the lead but the Storm remained just within striking distance. Las Vegas led after three quarters 75-67.

The Aces began to really pour it on in the fourth quarter. At 6:33 Las Vegas had a 87-69 lead as they began to pull away from the Storm. With five minutes left in the game the Aces had their largest lead of the game 91-71.

Both Wilson and Loyd had double doubles but the strength in the Las Vegas starting lineup was more than the Storm could handle. The Aces held onto that twenty point lead for the remainder of the game in fact the final was 103-77 as they blew the Storm out of the building in the final quarter. Las Vegas won the fourth quarter 28-10.

A’Ja Wilson finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds. Jackie Young came in with 22 points. Las Vegas will now get six well-deserved days off as they prepare to finish up the regular season in Phoenix. The entire team is now in playoff mode going forward.

Aces post game notes: The Aces got back on track Thursday night beating the Washington Mystics ending a two game losing streak. With two games left in the regular season, the Aces need to prepare for the upcoming post season. It would appear right now that the road to a second championship runs through New York. It was great to see Candace Parker back on the bench lending her invaluable experience with her teammates.

Las Vegas will be back on the court next Friday taking on the Mercury in Phoenix in back to back games to end the 2023 regular season. It is always fun to watch the expertise of Brittney Griner as she leads Phoenix in this game. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Oakland Roots Lose 1-0 To Sacramento Republic FC From A Penalty Shot

Defenseman Memo Diaz of the Oakland Roots and the defense tried as hard as they did couldn’t stop the Sacramento Republic FC getting shutout at CSU East Bay in Hayward on Sat Sep 2, 2023 (@oaklandrootssc photo)

By Troy Ewers

Hayward, CA – In CSU East Bay, the Oakland Roots take on NorCal rival Sacramento Republic FCin their first game of September as we approach the final stretch of games this regular season. Oakland Roots looked to rebound from their heartbreaking loss last week, August 26th. Oakland currently sits in fourth place in the West and the battle for a playoff run continues.

The game started with Sacramento immediately getting on the board after Juan Herrera converted a penalty shot with a shot off the right foot to the bottom left of the net, 1-0 Sacramento. The rest of the first half was a slow half due to many penalties, 17 in total (10 for Sacramento and 7 for Oakland). The teams went even on shots on goal with two, but Oakland was still behind as the first half whistle blew.

The second half was a match with no change of pace, but there were more shots for both sides, a total of 22 for both squads and after an even possession match up this game ended with the same score we started with three minutes in.

This certainly wasn’t the result Oakland sought out for, but it’s something they have to recover from going into their next match. That next match for the Roots will be in Las Vegas against Las Vegas FC, September 9th. Hopefully the Roots can shake off the last two losses and regain their momentum.

A’s edge Angels 2-1 for two wins in a row at Coliseum

Oakland Athletics’ Brent Rooker hits a two-run home run against the Los Angeles Angels during the fourth inning at the Oakland Coliseum on Sat Sep 2, 2023 (AP News photo)

Los Angeles (64-72). 100 000 000 – 1. 6. 0

Oakland (41-95). 000 200 00x – 2 1. 0

Time: 2:31

Attendance: 13,709

By Lewis Rubman

OAKLAND–The press box was jammed, though not jam packed, Saturday afternoon with members of the Japanese media, who had come to see Shohei Ohtani, who still is a draw, even when he’s confined to the role of designated hitter.

This was in contrast to the 12,709 paying customers sprinkled around the stands on a warm but overcast afternoon in the once magnificent Oakland Coliseum. The game was a beauty, a hard fought 2-1 Oakland victory over the visitors from Anaheim.

Paul Blackburn, Oakland’s starter, was 3-4, 3.93 when he came to work but had more encouraging numbers for his last seven starts, 2-2, 2.36. When Kirby Snead relieved him to start the sixth, Blackburn had thrown 86 pitched, 51 of which counted as strikes.

Blackburn allowed one run, which was earned, on four hits and three walks, one of them intentional, while striking out four. Blackburn earned his fourth win against as many defeats and lowered his earned run average to. 4-4, 3.81. Trevor May handled the Halos in the ninth.

Spencer Patton replaced Snead after the lefty hurled a scoreless sixth, followed by Dany Jiménez, who got through the eighth without yielding anything more dangerous than a walk to Randall Griechuk, whom the Angels had put on the waiver wire but took back when no one claimed him.

Angels manager, Berkeley alum Phil Nevin also chose a right hander to start for his team, Griffin Channing, a veteran of four big league seasons. This was his 18th start of the season, and he brought a 7-4, 4.38 record to it, 4-2, 3.32 over his 10 previous starts.

He features a four seamer, which he uses 35% of the time, slider (32.4%), change of pace (19.9%), curve (12.1%), and a very occasional (0.6%) sinker. He lasted six innings, yielding to Aaron Loup, who pitched a perfect seventh, and Andrew Wantz, who shut the A’s out in the eighth, allowing only a single to right.

Canning faced 22 Athletics batters and threw 89 pitches, 61 going as strikes. He allowed a pair of runs, both earned, on four hits, including a costly two run homer. He didn’t allow a single walk and struck out eight. He was charged with a tough loss, and his record now stands at 7-5 4.30.

The Angels took an early lead, loading the bases with one out in the top of the first. on walks to the first two batters Blackburn faced, rookie Nolan Schanuel, who now has reached base safely in all of his first 12 major league games, and Ohtani.

After Brandon Drury went down swinging, a single to center by Mike Moustakas loaded the bases. Luis Rengifo lofted a fly to shallow right; Nick Allen made a nice, tumbling catch of it, and the sacrifice fly brought in Schanuel with the game’s first run.

Oakland threatened in the bottom of the second after Seth Brown’s one out double to right, but Jordan Diaz fanned, and Mickey Moniak corralled Díaz’s towering fly to the center field wall

They broke through in the fourth. Ryan Noda lined a one out opposite field single down the left field line. Then Brent Rooker sent a 436 foot shot over the left center field wall for his 23rd round tripper of the year. The one and two change up came in at 89.7mph and left at 106mph. I guess that’s why Canning throws that pitch only 0.6% of the time.

The move to replace Snead with Patton in the seventh was not a successful one. Eduardo Escobar hit a leadoff single to right and stole second. Patton issued back to back walks to Kyren Paris and Schanuel. Meanwhile, Andrew Velázquez, running for Escobar, stole second and was thrown out trying to steal third. This brought up Ohtani with runners on first and second and one out.

It also brought Sam Long, a lefty, out of the bullpen to face the Halos’ left handed DH, who popped an infield fly to short. Then Brandon Drury flew out to Lawrence Butler in left center. The A’s had dodged the Angels’ bullets.

Trevor May went to the mound in the visitors’ ninth trying to protect a 2-1 lead and earn his 16th save in 19 attempts. He issued a lead off walk to Velázquez, who went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Paris, who went to third on Schanuel’s ground out to first.

Once more Ohtani came up with a chance to undo the A’s advantage. Once more Ohtani received an intentional walk. May then came through by getting Drury one more to fly out to center.

Saturday afternoon’s win leaves Oakland 41-95, 3.01, which looks good when compared with the record of the ill-fated Cleveland Spiders on this day in 1899, 19-102, 1.57. They were idle that day but still had 33 games left in the season, which they finished at 20-134, .130. That’s one record for futility that the A’s won’t match this year.

They are, however, still in the running against the 1962 New York Mets, the gold standard for ineffectiveness in the modern era. The not yet Amazin’s squeaked by Bobby Shantz and the Cardinals in Sportsman’s Park, 4-1, to raise their record to 35-103, .254, just a tad better than the 40-120, .250 at which they finished their season in hell.

Sunday, the Angels, who, by the way, are trying to get a new stadium, will send left hander Tyler Anderson (5-6,5.58) against an as yet unnamed Oakland pitcher.

MLB podcast with Augie Mesenburg: Will Oakland Coliseum grow weeds and foliage after A’s leave in 24?; Which SF Giants team will show up; plus more news

A look at the Oakland Coliseum could the park grow tall grass and weeds after the A’s leave in 2024 (AP News file photo)

On the MLB podcast with Augie Mesenburg:

#1 Can you see the Oakland Coliseum going the way of the old ballparks of yesteryear with weeds and foliage growing after the team has departed. Similar to Shibe Park in Philadelphia, Ebbetts Field in Brooklyn, Pontiac Silverdome, or the Houston Astrodome once the Oakland A’s leave in 2024?

#2 The San Francisco Giants won big on Thursday 7-2 and then on Friday night got clobbered by the San Diego Padres 7-3 at Petco Park in San Diego. You have to wonder on some days which Giant team is going to show up.

#3 The Los Angeles Angels a team your watching today waved five players four of whom were picked up and fifth player who didn’t get pick up Randal Grichuk is back on the Angels roster because the Angels were on the hook for his salary anyway. The Angels got walloped by the A’s on Friday 9-2 at the Oakland Coliseum.

#4 Augie, with the Angels struggling as they are does that automatically indicate to Shohei Ohtani that it’s time to go shopping.

#5 Arizona D-Backs minor league pitcher Jose Cabrera has been suspended for testing positive for performance enhancers. Cabrera 21 years old is 4-9 ERA 5.28 with 23 starts in class A Visalia and Hillsboro.
