STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal (4-4, 0-0 Pac-12) attacked the guest San Diego Toreros (6-3, 0-0 WCC), and chased them all around the Farm, 88-64..

Senior forward Brandon Angel led the way for Stanford, with 25 points and 8 rebounds. He also got the party started with a three-pointer, demarking the first points of the game.The 3-0 lead was a precursor for the rest of the battle, as the Cardinal were in front from that point on to the final whistle.

Not only did Angel drill a three, but senior Michael Jones dropped one too. Stanford was on a 6-0 run with only two made shots; however, the Southern California bullfighters had their own response (4-0). That would be the closest margin (2) of the allotted 40-minute contest.

Stanford led by as much as 17 points during the remainder of the first half. By the time the recess bell rang, the Cardinal had a 16-point advantage over the Toreros, 43-27.

Angel had 15 points and 6 rebounds, while Michael Jones chipped in 11 more to help expand the lead. No players from San Diego scratched double-digits at intermission..

In the second half, the visitors tried to fight their way back with their swords and capes, but their efforts were proved to be futile, despite a 7-0 run late in the game. Stanford on the other hand hit a lead as significant as 26 points in the closing seconds. They settled for a 24-point victory, 88-64 instead.

Senior forward Spencer Jones got himself into the double-figure club in the second half (16) and snagged a few more rebounds (6). Angel added 10 more to his tally (25), while Michael Jones contributed an additional 8 to his total (19).

San Diego presented four players with at least 10 points to their boxscore. Junior guard Deuce Turner (12), senior Devin Dahlke and freshman Dragos Lungu both had 11, while junior Wayne McKinney III offered 10 points and 5 rebounds.

Stanford will next be in action at Maples Sunday, December 17, 2 PM PDT, hosting the Idaho Vandals. San Diego will be heading to Logan, UT to take on the Utah State Aggies, Wednesday, December 6 at 6 PM MST.

Rangers two goal third period edges Sharks 6-5 at MSG; Panarin scores hat trick for New York

NEW YORK, N.Y. — The San Jose Sharks failed to tie the game late at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night and fell 6-5 to the New York Rangers, who earned their 3,000th win in franchise history.

Coming off their first road victory this season, against the New Jersey Devils on Friday, the Sharks had a chance at a two-game winning streak. But after the pregame skate, the Sharks had Ty Emberson and Nico Sturm as late scratches due to lower-body injuries.

Sharks head coach David Quinn, who returned to face the team he used to coach, said it was “an adverse day with the news we got this morning”.

“Listen we’re playing much better hockey, we’ve had a lot of adversity, I’ve said this a lot, no one’s had more than us,” said Quinn. “But give our guys a ton of credit, they came ready to play tonight and had a chance to tie it late.”

In the first period, Anthony Duclair made a wrist shot at 3:50 to put the Sharks up 1-0. Artemi Panarin made a deflected shot at 8:44 to tie the game at 1-1. Then Ryan Carpenter, who spent last season with the Rangers and got a welcome back shoutout on the jumbotron, made a revenge wrist shot at 12:21 that brought the Sharks back up 2-1.

But 30 seconds later, Panarin hit back with a wrist shot to tie the game again at 2-2. Mika Zibanejad made a snap shot at 16:42 and the period ended with the Rangers leading 3-2.

In the second period, Jacob MacDonald made a wrist shot at 9:16 to tie the game at 3-3. Will Cuylle made a wrist shot at 16:03 and New York lead 4-3.

MacDonald said that ‘fight is a big part’ that the Sharks have now that was missing in the first part of the season.

“Having that tonight was a very good sign,” said MacDonald. “I thought we sprung a couple of goals quickly, definitely treading in the right direction, so I like where we’re at, just have to keep pushing to lock things down.”

In the third period, Panarin netted a hat trick with a backhand shot at 4:41 to extend the Rangers’ lead to 5-3. K’Andre Miller hit a wrist shot at 13:04 and boosted the Rangers up 6-4. But the Sharks responded with a wrist shot by Fabian Zetterlund at 14:38 to cut the Rangers’ lead to 6-4.

“You want to create something every shift and when you’re down three goals it’s not over until a single or whatever you call it,” said Zetterlund. “We give it a good push and almost…”

Alexander Barabanov made a tip-in shot from Calen Addison at 15:50 to trail the Rangers by only one, but the Sharks failed to net another.

The Rangers (18-4-1) became the fifth NHL team to reach the 3,000-game victory milestone, before a sold-out crowd of 18,006.

San Jose (6-17-2) continue their road trip facing the New York Islanders (10-7-6) at UBS Arena on Tuesday. The puck drops at 4:30 p.m. PST.

49ers get their revenge in NFC Championship rematch in 42-19 win over Eagles

Revenge is a dish best served cold.

The San Francisco 49ers scored touchdowns on six straight possessions in a 42-19 blowout victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field.

San Francisco has won four games in a row as they have their sights on the number one seed in the NFC. Philadelphia lost for just the second time this season.

It didn’t look like it was going to be a cakewalk by San Francisco (9-3) after the opening 15 minutes. The Eagles defense held the 49ers potent offense to -6 yards in total offense.

Philadelphia (10-2) had two red zone possessions in the first quarter but San Francisco’s stout defense bent but didn’t break as they held the Eagles to two Jake Elliot field goals, a 26 and 39 yarder.

Once the second quarter got underway, so did the 49ers offense. Quarterback Brock Purdy led an 11 play 85-yard drive that accumulated with a Brandon Aiuyk two-yard touchdown reception with 7:10 left in the second quarter.

The 49ers went up 14-6 with 38 second remaining in the first half. Christian McCaffery’s two-yard rushing touchdown, his 12th of the season, finished off a 10 play 90-yard drive.

San Francisco kept the momentum on its side as it scored its on third straight offensive drive to start the second half. Deebo Samuel started his big day with an end around for a 12-yard rushing touchdown, his fourth of the season.

Dre Greenlaw ejected from the game with 9:19 remaining in the third quarter after body slamming Davonta Smith to the ground after a 13-yard reception. Greenlaw made contact with the Eagles head of security, who was also ejected from the game.

Philadelphia made it a one score game when quarterback Jalen Hurts scored with a “tush push” from the one-yard line with 6:51 remaining in the third quarter. That would be as close as it would get for the home team.

San Francisco once again answered on its next drive. Purdy connected with Samuel on a short pass up the middle. Samuel broke a tackle and raced down the field for a 48-yard touchdown reception, with 43 of them after the catch, for his second touchdown of the game.

The 49ers put the game away when Jauan Jennings broke a tackle on an out route for an 18-yard touchdown reception for a 35-13 lead with 10:50 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Hurts left the game at the end of the third quarter for a concussion protocol. Backup quarterback Marcus Mariota took over for four plays on the Eagles first drive in the fourth quarter. Hurts came back to throw a two-yard touchdown reception to Smith.

The 49ers put the finishing touch on their impressive victory when Samuel took a wide receiver screen and ran it 46 yards for his second receiving touchdown and third overall of the game. Samuel finished with four catches for 116 yards and chipped in 22 yards on the ground on three carries.

Purdy was 19 of 27 for 314 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He finished with a QB rating of 148.8. McCaffery led all rushers with 93 yards on 17 carries to go along with his touchdown. Tight end George Kittle contributed four catches for 68 yards.

Hurts went 26 of 45 for 298 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. He also led the Eagles in rushing with 20 yards on six carries. A.J Brown led Philadelphia in receiving with eight catches for 114 yards. Smith chipped in nine catches for 96 yards.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 8-for-11 on third down conversion. Philadelphia was 8-for-15.

The 49ers improved to 22-14-1 all-time against the Eagles, including 12-6-1 on the road.  

San Francisco has won 4 of the previous 6 regular season matchups against Philadelphia.  

The Niners improved to 2-2 against the Eagles and 8-7 against the NFC East, including 3-0 in 2023 under head coach Kyle Shanahan.

These are the three main reasons the two-way Japanese superstar could quickly sign with the Dodgers.

Why are the Dodgers the favorites to sign Shohei Ohtani? 1-He has repeatedly said he wants to stay on the West Coast. 2-He wants to be with a winner, and the Dodgers have won 10 divisional titles since 2013, three NL pennants, and a World Series, and they play here on the coast.

Three only a super-rich team can sign him, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are one of those teams, owned by the Guggenheim Baseball consortium. So, what is not to like for Ohtani?

It is well known by now that baseball sensation and free agent Shohei Ohtani is much more comfortable playing in southern California. He has played all of his six-year career at pitching-friendly Angel Stadium in Anaheim. If Angel Stadium is pitching-friendly, just 35 miles up Interstate Highway 5 there is a park that is even harder to hit a ball out, and that is Dodger Stadium.

The Los Angeles Dodgers makes all the sense in the world for the fantastic two-way player to set his new home beginning this next 2024 season. It is expected Ohtani could make a decision as early as Monday, the fourth of December.

On Monday, December 4, the Baseball Winter Meetings begin in Nashville, Tennessee. Shohei Ohtani is the biggest catch possible, and the Dodgers are one of the favorite teams to land the Japanese star with a salary that could reach $600 million.

The Dodger’s biggest and most historic rivals, the San Francisco Giants, have the money and the desire to land that box office attraction, especially since last season they struck out twice with two biggies, first Northern California native Aaron Judge, who stayed with the Yankees, and later with Carlos Correa who signed with the Twins. In both cases, the Giants went public and told their fans they were after these two superstars.

For Giants fans, It was like dangling a piece of candy in front of a 3-year-old and then pulling it back. Ohtani’s agent is Nez Balelo, one of the top agents in the baseball business, who Forbes also lists as one of the most potent agents in the world. Balelo is in the class of super-baseball agent Scott Boras.

Winter Meetings are scheduled from December 4-7. There is more than a 50% possibility that Shohei Ohtani will be signing his new contract, which will be, by far, the biggest in baseball history and one of the biggest in all sports. The 2-time MVP had successful elbow surgery last September; he is expected to hit in 2024 and return to the mound in 2025.

#1 How frustrating does it have to get for the Cleveland Browns in terms of having the revolving door of quarterbacks. The Browns are now on their fourth quarterback with 38 year old Joe Flacco getting the start after quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson suffered a concussion last week. Robinson was ruled out on Friday. The Browns lost quarterbacks DeShaun Watson who is out with a shoulder injury and PJ Walker who started two games this season and will serve as Flacco’s back up Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.

#2 Charlie, to the big game of the season the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles. How much is this game unfinished business for the 49ers and how badly does quarterback Brock Purdy want to get in win it and come out it in one piece?

#3 The Eagles have been leaning on their defense with linebackers stopping any quarterback keepers or opposing running backs. Will this be a factor for running back Christian McCaffrey whose had nothing but success in finding holes and getting yards.

#4 The Las Vegas Raiders badly want to get back in the win column after losing their last two games to the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs badly did some damage to Raiders defense last Sunday at Allegiant Stadium with a 14 point second quarter and a ten point fourth quarter for a 31-17 win. Simply put the defense just couldn’t stop quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid’s game plan down.

#5 The Raiders have a bye this Sunday and host the Minnesota Vikings Sun Dec 10th at Allegiant. Vikings lost to the Chicago Bears last Sunday in a squeaker 12-10 at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The Vikings have gone without their starter Kirk Cousins and have started Joshua Dobbs who went 22-32 for 185 yards one touchdown and what hurt Dobbs the most he was picked off four times. How do you see the Raiders and Vikings next Sunday in Vegas?

Despite Jokic’s triple double Kings defeat NBA Champs Nuggets 123-117

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Saturday night in Sacramento. The Kings were set to welcome in the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets. The Kings were coming off a tough loss to the LA Clippers on the second night of a back-to-back. The Kings and Nuggets were set to tip-off at 7 PM PST at Golden One Center. The Kings defeated the Nuggets 123-117.

In the first quarter, the Kings yet again came out slow. The Kings didn’t gid themselves a huge hole; however, they were outscored by the Nuggets 30-25 in the first quarter. The Kings offense was still not hitting on all cylinders as the Kings were looking to recover from the Clippers loss. The Nuggets were looking solid on the offensive end, even with the absence of Jamal Murray.

In the second quarter, the Kings offense came alive a bit. The Kings outscored the Nuggets by a sizeable 39-20 margin. Overall, the Kings played a much more efficient quarter on both sides of the court to take the lead going into halftime. The Kings would be leading 64-50 as the half concluded. Nikola Jokic did what he usually does, scoring 18 points in the half. Kevin Huerter and De’Aaron Fox each had 11 points in the first half.

In the third quarter, the Kings melted down early in the quarter. The 14-point lead they had built up all but had evaporated midway through the quarter. However, the Kings were able to respond and build the lead back to 10 points heading into the fourth quarter. The Kings would need to buckle down in the final 12 minutes of the game if they hoped to defeat the reigning NBA champs.

In the fourth quarter, the Nuggets stormed back. The Nuggets got the game within four points in the final quarter. However, the Kings held on to win the game. The Kings got big three-pointers from Malik Monk and Huerter in the last minute of the game to secure the deal.

The Kings defeated the Nuggets 123-117. The Kings and Nuggets engaged in a slugfest in the final quarter as the Nuggets outscored the Kings 39-35. Fox led the Kings with 25 points and 16 assists. The 16 assists were a career high for Fox. Jokic led the way for the Denver Nuggets with 36 points.

Up Next: The Kings will stay home to take on the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday at 7 PM PST.

Barracuda lose high-scoring affair against Roadrunners 7-5

The Barracuda played the second of back-to-backs against the Roadrunners on the road Saturday night.

For San Jose Eetu Makiniemi got the start while for Tucson Anson Thornton was in goal.

Drawing first blood in this game was the Barracuda as Shakir Mukhamadullin scored as he ripped one home assisted by Bradley Marek and Henry Thrun.

Things quickly fell apart for the Barracuda when Hunter Drew responded less than a minute later. The goal seemed to open the floodgates for the Roadrunners as they went on to score four straight. This would be the second game in a row that Tucson scored four goals in the first period against the Barracuda. As they got goals from Cameron Hebig, Travis Barron, and another one from Drew.

The first period ended up being the only period Makiniemi played as Magnus Chrona took over to start the second. Makiniemi finished his night making nine saves on 13 shots.

In the second things went considerably better for the Barracuda as Thomas Bordeleau scored his sixth of the season just 1:52 in.

Brandon Coe followed that up with a goal of his own just a few minutes later making it 4-3. The scoring ended there in the second but the comeback was in place as San Jose headed into the third.

Looking to extend their lead the Roadrunners came out flying as Jan Jenik scored just 2:23 into the third.

Less than three minutes later Barron got his second of the game making it a 6-3 game.

Despite the slow start Nathan Todd got one right back just nine seconds later and then Nick Cicek scored on the power play making it a game again.

The Barracuda would pull their goalie but it was not to be as Barron scored his third goal of the night getting him the hat trick and ending the game at 7-5.

Neither team was particularly threatening on the power play as San Jose went 1/4 while the Roadrunners went 0/4.

Chrona did okay coming in to replace Makiniemi making 17 saves on 19 shots.

San Jose will look to bounce back against the Silver Knights on Friday at home at 7 p.m.

Who are these guys? Cal shocks Santa Clara 84-69 at Haas Pavilion

Jaylon Tyson and Jalen Cone led the way, as the Cal Bears returned home after going winless in the SoCal Showcase to defeat the Santa Clara Broncos, 84-69.

The Broncos came into tonight’s game at 7-1, so the Bears were going to have their hands full. The two teams traded baskets early on, but after a three-ball by Cone, his first of three-straight, gave Cal a 7-6 lead, the Bears would not look back.

Cal opened out to a 23-9 lead, as they mostly maintained a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the first period. Cal went into the half up 45-31.

Cal continued to maintain that lead as the second period got underway, and got to their biggest lead of the night at 63-45, following a pair of free throws by Keonte Kenney with 11:13 to go.

However, the Broncos struck back with a 14-2 run, as they closed Cal’s lead to 65-59 with 7:37 to go. Tyson hit a three to make it 68-59, and from there the Bears got back on track, as they scored 14 unanswered points to open their lead back up to 79-59.

Tyson scored the first seven points of the drive, and he also got into a brief scuffle with Kosy Akametu of the Broncos, as both were hit with technical fouls. The fouls didn’t matter, however, as Tyson ended up getting his third double-double of the season as part of a 21-point performance.

The Broncos outscored the Bears 10-5 at the end, but it was far too late, as Cal ended up winning the game 84-69.

Tyson and Cone combined for nearly two-thirds of Cal’s scoring tonight. In addition to Tyson’s 21 points, Cone scored 26 points, as he was also 7-for-10 from beyond the arc.

With this win, Cal improves to 3-5 on the season, and they have also equaled their win total from last season just eight games into this season.

The Bears will have another week off, and they will then make the trip to Indianapolis, Indiana to take on the Butler Bulldogs for a 9:00 am tip next Saturday.

No Buzzer-Beater for Warriors Lose to Clippers 113-112 in the Southland

In a crazy turnaround, the Los Angeles Clippers (9-10) beat the Golden State Warriors (9-11) 113-112. The Warriors led for almost the entire game and it came down to the final seconds. Draymond Green attempted a shot from downtown with 8.9 seconds left on the clock that fell short. There would be no buzzer-beater for Golden State. They had blown a 22 point lead.

Saturday, the Warriors took on the Clippers for an afternoon rematch at Crypto.com Arena. Last Thursday the two teams met at Chase Center with the Warriors prevailing 120-114. Warrior guards Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson led the Warriors in that win; Curry with 26 and Thompson with 22.

Game recap: The Warriors had a nice start in the opening quarter leading after the first 33-22. Draymond Green had an exceptional quarter hitting 4 of 5 from downtown. The Clippers have a loaded starting roster with three Titans Paul George, Kawhi Leonard and James Harden but despite that Golden State held them to 38% shooting while the Warriors had a great offensive start shooting 55% in the quarter.

Golden State kept the pressure on in the second quarter leading at the half by the score of 67-48 a 19 point lead. They won the quarter 34-26 and after two quarters had control of this game with a great offensive effort. They did have ten turnovers in the first half but despite that they were in complete control throughout the two opening quarters of play.

The Clippers had some work to do in this game and started to roll in the third quarter. The 22 point lead that the Warriors had in the game was cut to two points 87-85 with 41 seconds left on the clock in the third.

The Warriors pushed back and after three quarters had a 92-85 lead. The Clippers were now shooting at 46 percent to the Warriors 47% in a Los Angeles turnaround. The Clippers had won the third quarter 37-25.

This game came down to the fourth quarter. The Clippers had really turned this game around continuing to hang around but unable to take the lead; in fact they had not led once in this game so far.

Shots from downtown were clearly in favor of the Warriors with Golden State shooting at 45 % to the Clippers 33%; the Warriors hitting 16 from beyond the arc. With five minutes left in the game it was a five point game with the Warriors hanging on 105-99.

Los Angeles was coming up with some crazy defensive sequences but just could not get on top of Golden State. With 38.1 left in the game, the Warriors had a 112-108 lead. An untimely turnover at the end of the game plus a Clipper foul made things awfully tough for Los Angeles but they refused to back down.

With 8.9 seconds left on the clock, the Clippers took their first lead of the game 113-112. George made the shot of the game for Los Angeles hitting a 3-pointer with less than nine seconds remaining.

When it really mattered it came down to a potential game-winning 3-pointer from Green. The shot fell short and there would be no buzzer-beater for the Warriors. The Clippers won the fourth quarter 28-20 really coming to life and winning this game 113-112.

It was tale of two halves. The first half was all Warriors and in the second half the Clippers made a lot of winning plays to set up this win. Curry had the high for the Warriors with 22 points. Both Green and Moses Moody had 21 points apiece. The Warriors made 17 3-pointers in this game, with four each from Green, Curry and Thompson.

The Big Three for the Clippers had some terrific offense with 25 points scored by George. Harden finished with 21 points and Leonard had 20 points. After trailing for almost the entirety of this game, this win for the Clippers was most unexpected especially when the Warriors had a 112-108 lead with 38 seconds left on the clock. The Clippers had avenged the loss they had taken at Chase last Thursday.

This was a huge disappointment for the Warriors. They will have a few off days before they take on the Portland Trail Blazers Wednesday night at Chase Center. Tipoff for this game is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

San Jose State Spartans Lose To Montana Grizzlies 75-58

The San José State Spartans are looking for their fourth win in five games when they take on Montana on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans were on a three-game winning streak prior to losing to Cal Poly in overtime on Wednesday night. Following the game, the Spartans will head to North Dakota State for the final contest of a three-game road trip. 

The first half for the Spartans was a rare form for them this season where they were playing from behind. Going 9-25 from the field, it looked like nothing went right offensively for the Spartans and Montana took full advantage. Montana hauled 22 rebounds and went 48% from the field with Money Williams scoring 16 points in the first half for Montana. The half ended 36-24 Montana with the lead. 

The second half was a bigger runaway for Montana as at one point in the half the Grizzlies were up 60-37. The Spartans tried to put their foot on the gas, but the potholes Montana set up early slowed San Jose State down. 52% from the field, but that didn’t matter as Montana forced nine turnovers and even though Montana only scored seven points off those turnovers, it was enough to halt any progress SJSU tried to create.

Even the guys that are usual scorers for the Spartans were quiet. Trey Anderson, Tibet Gorener, and MJ Amey Jr. combined for 10 points this game and even Alvaro Cardenas’s nine points was just a piece of floss in an avalanche. The final score ended up being 75-58 Montana. 

Not the way the Spartans wanted to rebound after the last loss, but the result leaves them to fall to 5-4. The next game for San Jose State will be against North Dakota State in Fargo, North Dakota, Monday, December 4th.
