In his second year Smith in 2021 had his best year with 19.5 sacks and got to the quarterback with 29 hits. Smith also got Pro Bowl and All Pro honors. Smith’s sacks that year remains a 49es franchise record.
#5 Smith had numerous off field issues that saw him getting arrested ten times in nine years. He was arrested for DUI in 2021 in Maimi. In 2013 Smith was arrested in San Jose when he crashed his car into a tree. Smith had been arrested in October 2013 for three felonies for illegal assault weapon charges. Smith was suspended by the NFL for nine game in 2014 for the NFL’s personal conduct and substance abuse policies. On Aug 7, 2015 Smith had a third DUI charge and was released by the 49ers. Smith was suspended for nine games for violations of the NFL’s personal conduct and substance abuse policies and a third DUI arrest. He was released by the 49ers a day after he was arrested on hit and run, DUI and vandalism charges.

Summer begins on June 21; stores like Macy’s cannot wait to mark down merchandise, and some items are already marked down by as much as 30%. The baseball world, which is also big business like retail markets, is knocking on the door of what could be a busy summer for players changing uniforms.
During this time of the season, as July 4 approaches, teams usually conduct their evaluations. There are just two types of transactions for Front Offices, buyers and sellers. The San Francisco Giants, who were not considered serious contenders at the start of the season, but nobody could have predicted that their season could go south so quickly, and they might not even reach their 81-81 record season-ending last year, there is only one thing they can do: to improve the team for next season and beyond.
The Giants will be sellers; there is no doubt about it. They have some good veteran players who could go to teams that still have hope this year. Although the Giants do not say they are rebuilding, they insist that they are not buying players either, making a clear path for the future.
If the 2027 season is very much in doubt because a big labor battle is heating up between the owners, who want to lock out the players, and the players’ union, which refuses to accept a salary cap.However, there are a few scenarios where I believe the Giants can improve.
Big Giants items they could offer? 1- Logan Webb. He is still a very good pitcher, a #1 on most teams. He will bring other players of value and potential, giving the Giants a new look. 2-Luis Arraez. The three-time batting champion (with three different teams) could try his fortune somewhere else for a fourth batting championship; he is very capable, very good contact hitter. He is on an expiring one-year $12 million contract with a team going nowhere, and he is most likely the most valuable trade bait for the Giants today. 3-Rafael Devers. I would trade him, but they will probably not get rid of him, because of “mucho dinero,” lots of money still owed on his contract when he came from Boston.
However, I would not be surprised if they deal Rafael Devers. In over 40 years in this business, I have seen stuff that makes me scratch my head. I believe this trio of established stars is something the Giants front office could “sell”, as they are basically looking to unload impending free agents and expensive veterans; they have to shift their focus to acquiring prospects and retooling for the future.
These are some of the challenges the San Francisco Giants front office faces this summer. They have to “rebuild” a bullpen, which, in my humble opinion, is embarrassing. Giants could have a busy summer ahead. Sometimes, a team, even with talent, lacks that chemistry, that desire to win. This is the case of the 2026 SF Giants version.

LAS VEGAS — The Las Vegas Athletics are sizzling in Sin City as they’ve won their fourth straight game, beating the Colorado Rockies 7-5 at Las Vegas Stadium on Saturday night.
With their comeback win, the A’s are now .500 and just one game back of the Seattle Mariners in the American League West. The Mariners lost 8-3 to the Washington Nationals on Saturday afternoon in our nation’s capital.
On Saturday night, the Rockies and A’s were trading blows but the game was ultimately decided in the sixth inning. Tyler Soderstrom hit a pinch-hit, go-ahead double off Rockies pitcher Jaden Hill that gave the A’s a 6-5 lead. The A’s scored again later in the inning after Hill hit Carlos Cortes with the bases loaded and two outs.
The A’s started the scoring right away against Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland after Nick Kurtz hit a one-out single to get things started. The next batter Shea Langeliers doubled to left field. After Jonah Heim struck out, the next batter Jacob Wilson hit a ground ball, 2-out single to left field, giving the A’s a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
In the third inning, the Rockies answered back against A’s starter Joey Estes, who was making his season debut on Saturday night. Catcher Brett Sullivan hit a lead-off home run to put the Rockies on the board. Estes then retired the next three batters in order.
But in the fourth inning, Estes ran into some trouble. After first baseman TJ Rumfield doubled to lead off the inning, Estes then struck out Hunter Goodman. But Troy Johnston singled in the tying run, knotting the score at 2. Johnston, however, was thrown out trying to get to second base on an errant throw. Third baseman Max Muncy fired to second after retrieving the ball, nailing down Johnston who was visibly upset that he couldn’t make it safely.
But the A’s, who have come back to win every game in their four-game winning streak, struck back in their half of the fourth. After Henry Bolte singled, Zack Gelof hit a two-run home run off of Freeland to give the A’s a 4-2 lead.
In the fifth, it was the Rockies’ turn to answer back right away. Third baseman Kyle Karros tripled off of Estes to get things started for Colorado. Sullivan then hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3. But then, second baseman Sterlin Thompson hit a one-out double to get things going for the Rockies again. A’s manager Mark Kotsay then removed Estes from the game and brought in José Suarez.
Suarez immediately gave up a single to second baseman Edouard Julien, advancing Thompson to third. A passed ball from Langeliers brought in the tying run, evening the score at four. After Suarez then walked Willi Castro, Rumfield doubled in a run to give the Rockies a 5-4 lead. The A’s could’ve given up two runs there, but the Rockies had two runners, Julien and Castro, right behind each other on the play and the A’s were able to cut down the back runner Castro on a good relay.
With the A’s down 5-4, they displayed some two-out magic in the sixth inning. Alika Williams hit a bloop single with 2 outs to tie the game at 5. Gelof had singled in the inning with one out and then advanced to second on a groundout. The A’s scored two more runs in the inning and never gave back the lead.
In Estes’ season debut, he threw 4 1/3 innings, giving up five hits and four earned runs. He struck out four and walked one. As for Freeland, he gave up 10 hits and six earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. Freeland’s ERA is now 7.98 ERA for the year.
The Rockies are now 26-45, the worst record in the majors.
Up next, the A’s will go for the series sweep over the Rockies at Las Vegas Stadium. Game time is at 12:05 p.m. in the hot desert sun. Temperatures are expected to hit triple digits. A’s pitcher Jeffrey Springs (3-6, 4.68 ERA) will take on the Rockies’ Tomoyuki Sugano (6-4, 4.08 ERA).
If the A’s win their fifth in a row on Sunday, they will be over .500.

SAN FRANCISCO–The San Francisco Giants faithful stayed sitting down, while the Chicago Cubs overcrowded Oracle Park and stood loudly in a 6-1 win against the Giants on Saturday night.
The game started with a solo homerun bomb at the first pitch by Cubs all-star Pete Crow-Armstrong. This set the tone for the Cubs’ offense, aiming to play with an attacking offense.
The Giants went into this outing hoping to bring the winning energy they had against the Cubs in Chicago over to San Francisco. Rookie Bryce Eldridge came close as he hustled to second for a double, but the Cubs’ defense was right there, spying his enthusiasm for an extra bag from a mile away.
The theme of the evening was clear from the start – the Giants’ defense and pitching continue to struggle. Vitello spoke with the media pregame and mentioned they are looking for ways to improve by rotating their bullpen lineup through guys that are up and feeling good to combat the injured relievers.
The Giants’ pitching had three Cubs batters hit by a pitch through a two-inning stretch. A struggling look for the Giants’ bullpen.
The Giants starter, RHP Trevor McDonald pitched for 3.2 innings, being pulled during the fourth with the bases loaded. LHP Reiver Sanmartin relieved McDonald, finished the day with a 2-4 record and a 4.64 ERA.
“I think TMac was a little bit out of sync…yanking some pitches to the glove side…He’s been so good at being one of our best strike throwers,” Vitello said.
“It wasn’t very good overall…got my pitch count up and just got to be better,” McDonald said.
The Giants’ offense fought for some flow, but kept getting shut down by the Cubs’ pitching. In the third inning, Drew Gilbert walked, and Luis Arraez followed suit by hitting a triple, leading to Gilbert running home and scoring a run. The outing came to a close after Casey Schmitt and Rafael Devers struck out. This was the lone offensive success by the Giants throughout the evening.
“In particular, tonight, I know he’s (Gilbert) as ambitious as all of them. So frustrated when he doesn’t do what he’s capable of doing,” Vitello said.
The Cubs maintained a constant flow, having multiple batters hit solo home runs scattered across the box score by Ian Happ and Pedro Ramirez.
Rookie Bryce Eldridge extended his on-base streak to a career-best of 19 games, and Devers had a 2-4 on his at-bats for the evening, the team’s best.
The Giants look to regain some momentum Sunday afternoon in the series finale against the Cubs who will start RHP Colin Rea (5-4 ERA 5.19) at Oracle Park with RHP Logan Webb (3-4 ERA 3.88) starting on the bump. First pitch at 12:10 p.m.

This was not a game for the weak of heart. The fourth quarter was about as intense as it could have gotten with the lead bouncing back and forth as the seconds ticked away. This game was not decided until the clock displayed 3.5 seconds.
The Las Vegas Aces (10-3) came away with a 100-97 win against the Minnesota Lynx (10-3) at Michelob ULTRA Arena and it was appropriately Chelsea Gray who closed out the game with a couple of free throws for the win. She finished the game the way she has started it.
This highly anticipated matchup should prove to be a real battle as this game got underway. When the dust had settled on the first ten minutes of play the Aces had a 32-21 lead.
This was exactly the start that Las Vegas wanted to see and the task now remained; could they keep the pressure on the Lynx for the three remaining quarters. Chelsea Gray had picked up right where she had left off in their last game hitting four three’s.
Gray was the perfect opening act and there was not doubt that she would be covered like a blanket in the second quarter. Everything was clicking offensively going forward in this game.
The Lynx were able to outscore the Aces in the second quarter 30-25. At the half the Aces continued to lead 57-51 but their lead had been trimmed significantly. Minnesota put the wraps on Gray in the quarter as expected.
She had scored 12 points in the opening quarter and only 4 in the second. Having the hot hand in any game draws a lot of defensive attention and she was getting plenty. With the likes of A’ja Wilson, Nalyssa Smith, Jackie Young and Chennedy Carter plus trying to put the stops on Gray the Lynx did a great job winning the quarter.
The Aces had hit seven three’s in the first half. With less scoring from Gray, Wilson picked up the slack keeping that lead going into the half. The Lynx’s Natasha Howard had a great first half but on the downside she already had three personal fouls as did rookie Olivia Miles who had also been scoring a lot of points.
None of the Aces were in foul trouble in the first half. The largest lead in the game was a 15 point Ace advantage. The second half was gearing up to be a real battle.
The Aces outscored Minnesota in the third quarter by a single point 21-20 and going into the final quarter Las Vegas had a 78-71 lead. The Lynx had turned this game around and had Las Vegas fighting to keep the lead. Olivia Miles and Natasha Howard were a huge part of this turnaround.
Going into the fourth quarter Young had really begun to heat up which made things so much tougher on Minnesota. With under three minutes left on the clock it was a 2 point game 89-87 in favor of Las Vegas.
This game was going down to the wire and the Aces needed stops and buckets. This was anyone’s game and Minnesota had some crazy momentum going. It would be a wild finish as the Lynx continued to trail the Aces by a basket 91-89.
With 48 seconds left in the game the Lynx had taken their first lead 94-93 since the first quarter. Las Vegas took a brief lead when Jewell Lloyd hit three free throws. The lead bounced back and forth and with 20.5 seconds left on the clock the Aces had a 98-97 lead.
This game would come to an end pretty much the way it had started: with Gray hitting a couple of free throws and the Ace’s had won the game 100-97. Gray and her teammates had pulled out an amazing win.
This was just another wild nail-biter we have seen this season from the Aces. Their tenacity and discipline along with their skill has served them well. Wilson finished the game with a double double, 24 points and ten rebounds.
Gray was amazing hitting 6 of 10 from beyond the arc. She finished with 23 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists. Young had 16 points and 10 assists. Smith had 15 points and 6 rebounds, Las Vegas had 11 three’s in this game.
The Lynx put up quite a fight in this game and very nearly beat the Ace’s. Losing this game had to have been a terrible disappointment considering the three incredible quarters they played. They completely turned the game after the first quarter and had a very real shot at winning this game. Olivia Miles the Minnesota phenom had the high for the game with 29 points.
Game notes: The Aces right now are tied for first place and have been playing some outstanding basketball. With the win over the Lynx on Saturday the moved into a head to head tie as both team have identical records after the Aces won on Saturday night.
It is still early in the season but the standings are tight with five teams fighting to climb into the top spot that the Aces and Lynx occupy at the moment. Saturday night the Aces moved into the first spot sharing it with Minnesota.
Las Vegas has been steadily improving as we have finished over a quarter of the season. The incomparable A’Ja Wilson reached another milestone nearly a week ago in their game with the Seattle Storm becoming the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 6,000 points doing it in 278 games.
She led her team last Thursday with 32 points in their win over the Portland Fire. Chelsea Gray had 29 points in that game and along with Jackie Young these three ladies are tearing up the court. Nalyssa Smith has also been terrific gobbling up rebounds and scoring double digits.
In Saturday night’s game but there is no doubt they had the fire power and defensive excellence to take care of business. Gray finished with 23 points, Young had 16 points and Smith finished with 15 points.
After this thriller, the Aces will have a day off to catch their breath before heading to Dallas for a matchup with the fifth place Wings Mon Jun 15th. Tipoff for this game is scheduled for 5:00PM PDT.

SANTA CLARA–Boualem Khoukhi helped his country of Qatar do something it took four years to accomplish.
The Qatari captain’s header in the fourth minute of stoppage time went off of Miro Muheim for an own goal as Qatar shocked the world drawing 1-1 with Europe’s Switzerland in both country’s opening match in Group B play on a warm Saturday afternoon at San Francisco Stadium.
Qatar, in front of a crowd of over 68,000 spectators, recorded its first ever point in a World Cup tournament. When they hosted the tournament four years ago, they went 0-3 in group play.
The tiny Middle Eastern country wouldn’t have had the opportunity to record its first ever point if it weren’t for the excellent play of their goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada, who named the Man of the Match, who played the best match of his career making five outstanding saves including one from point blank range off of Dan Odoye early in the match that set the tone for Abunada’s day.
The Swiss looked like they were going to run away with the match with many quality chances in the first half. Th received a penalty kick in the 14th minute when a ball sent into the middle of box to Remo Freuler who was met by a punch to the face by Abunada while both players went up high in the air for the ball. Abunada was temporarily face down but managed to get up and finish the match with no further damage done.
Three minutes later, Breel Embolo cashed in the penalty that beat Abunada to the left side of the net for his first goal of the tournament.
Switzerland kept creating chaos inside Qatar’s side of the pitch with five big chances created but they weren’t able to put the ball into the back of the net the rest of the match. Ndoye had two chances to increase Switzerland’s lead but failed to get the ball past Abunada.
Qatar begun the second half with a quality chance from Edmilson Junior inside the box. Junior’s shot was stopped by Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel who came out to cut off the angle from Junior.
Switzerland had previously won six of their last nine matches when having a lead after halftime.
