San Francisco Giants/49ers podcast Bruce Macgowan:

#1 Bruce, how hard is it to believe that KNBR radio the flagship station of the San Francisco 49ers has let go of talk show host and play by play voice of the 49ers Greg Papa go after he had been suffering through Leukemia and bone marrow transplant treatments?

#2 Papa broke in the Bay Area scene as the play by play voice of the Golden State Warriors around 1986-1995 and was considered the second best all time Warriors play by play announcer behind Bill King.

#3 Papa lost his Warriors play by play job to Bob Fitzgerald how did that happen and why would the Warriors let someone like Greg Papa go?

#4 Mike Krukow the San Francisco Giants color announcer announced that Sep 27th will be his last day as TV color analyst as part of the famous Kruk and Kuip broadcast duel. Kruk said it’ll be hard to walk away but due to health issues he had to make the hard choice.

#5 The Giants let go of a large contingent of players at the trade deadline Heliot Ramos, Luis Arraez, Caleb Kilan, Robbie Ray, Tyle Mahle, and Erik Miller were these trades made to get young propects and who amongst those players were mistakes made that the Giants shouldn’t have let go?

SF Giants deadline trade report: Giants clear vets and improve farm at deadline, Arraez to Phils, Ray to Padres and Mahle to Braves

The Trade Deadline has come and gone, and the Giants have somewhat cleaned house with a flurry of moves. After their 5-4 loss to the Padres in San Diego yesterday, the Giants dealt starting pitcher Tyler Mahle to the Atlanta Braves for relief pitcher Anthony Molina.

Mahle was brought in on a one-year deal over the off-season, but has had a nightmare season for the Giants. Mahle went 3-9 with a 5.13 ERA over 18 starts with the Giants. Mahle is going to a band box in Truist Park. Perhaps, the Braves can find something to fix him that the Giants could not.

Now, to the trades we all expected to happen. Luis Arraez, who was too good to be true for the Giants this season, was traded alongside relief pitcher Caleb Kilian to the Philadelphia Phillies for right-handed pitchers Marty Gair and Ramon Marquez.

As much as the Giants will miss Arraez’ bat and glove, the latter of which came to life under the tutelage of infield coach Ron Washington, Marquez was the Phillies’ number-four prospect. Marquez is 6-1 with a 1.68 ERA with the Single-A Clearwater Thrashers and High-A Jersey Shore BlueClaws. Marquez is expected to be in the major league by 2028.

The Giants have dealt left-hander Robbie Ray to the San Diego Padres for two of the Padres’ top-10 prospects. The Giants received right-handed pitcher Miguel Mendez, who was the Padres’ number-four prospect, as well as shortstop Joniel Hernandez.Mendez, who is expected to be in the big leagues by next season, has had a rough season with the Double-A San Antonio Missions, as he has gone 2-2 with a 4.79 ERA.

Hernandez hit .316 in the Dominican Summer League.Heliot Ramos was dealt to the New York Yankees for left-handed pitching prospect Henry Lelane, and shortstop Kaeden Kent. Yes, the latter is the son of Hall-of-Fame second-baseman Jeff Kent. That means the Giants now have Barry Bonds’ nephew, Peyton Bonds, and Jeff Kent’s son,

Kaeden Kent, in their minor league system.“My heart was beating hard when I saw [the trade o]n the TV, but I feel like I’m in a good spot,” said Ramos. “If they trade it for me, it’s because they want me, obviously So I’m very proud. I mean, it’s the Yankees.”It has been a roller coaster for Ramos, who went from being one of the top prospects in Baseball to falling off completely. He finally sprang to life under Bob Melvin in 2024, and even went to the All-Star Game that season.

Ramos hit 22 home runs in 121 games for the Giants in 2021, followed by 21 last season.Lelane was 4-1 with a 2.77 ERA for the Single-A Tampa Tarpons and High-A Hudson Valley Renegades this season. Lelane and Kent are expected to be in the major league by 2028.

A bit surprising was the fact that the Giants traded left-handed reliever Erik Miller, along with outfield prospect Carlos Guiterrez, to the Boston Red Sox for infielder Marcelo Mayer. Miller had a 2.76 ERA for the Giants this season, and even showed potential to be the team’s closer.

Well, that is the business of Baseball.Pitchers Blade Tidwell, Tristan Beck and Carson Seymour have been called up, as the Giants will begin a three-game series against the Texas Rangers in Arlington, Texas Monday night.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: One-Year Contracts are Popular this Off-season

One of the questions of one year contracts San Francisco Giants pitcher Justin Verlander has a second year left on his $22 million two year contract will the Giants exercise his second year or choose to opt out? (AP file photo)

One-Year Contracts are Popular this Off-season

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

The San Francisco Giants have been lukewarm in the market for free agents this winter. In an effort to strengthen their pitching staff(bullpen, they have signed four pitchers this offseason, three of whom are on one-year deals. Tyler Mahle (1year,$10M), Jason Foley (1 year, $2M), Sam Hentges (1 year, $1.4M). They “splurge” by signing Adrian Houser to a 2-year, $22 Million Contract. Last season, the Giants signed Justin Verlander to a one-year, $15 million deal; all they got from the future Hall of Famer was four wins, which cost the Giants almost $3.7 million per win.

I do not believe Verlander will be back. Obviously, the Giants cannot afford the “luxury” of carrying a future Hall of Fame pitcher at the end of his career. With these new pitcher signings, the Giants are prioritizing other arms, making his return less sure despite Verlander’s expressed desire to pitch in 2026.

If the Giants want to really get serious? They would go for Framber Valdez, but that would take a multi-year contract and around $200 Million. If you want to catch the Dodgers, you go all the way with pitching. Yoshi Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Shohei Ohtani, Tyler Glasnow, and Roki Sasaki are the Dodgers’ rotation, and it’s lucky for the Giants that Clayton Kershaw retired. In 62 appearances vs. Los Gigantes in his Hall of Fame career, Kershaw compiled a 2.08 earned run average.

There have been a few multi-year multi-million contracts recently this winter. It is a hot pitching market, and so far, most of the largest deals have been pitchers, Dylan Cease to Toronto for (7 years $210M). Japanese pitcher Tatsuya Imai to Houston for 4 years, ($54M).

My prediction. We will continue this trend by teams of One-Year-deals, not only with the Giants but also with other teams. The looming 2026-2027 lockout is the reason for these short-term contracts and free agency. Players are seeking security ahead of the almost certain owners’ lockout expected around this time in 2026.

Headline Sports podcast with Charlie O: Skenes to start opening day for Bucs; Dodgers Ohtani goes deep in front of fans in Japan; plus more MLB news

Pittsburgh Pirates Paul Skenes will be the opening day starter for the Bucs on Thu Mar 27, 2025 against the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park in Miami (AP file photo)

On Headline Sports podcast with Charlie O:

#1 Pittsburgh Pirates Paul Skenes got the word from manager Derek Shelton that he would be the opening day starter. Skenes 22 years old a right hander was 11-3 and had an ERA of 1.96 in 23 starts for the Pirates in 2024 and won the NL Rookie of the Year Award. He said upon finding out that he would be the opening day starter “sweet.”

#2 Japanese and Los Angeles Dodger star Shohei Ohtani was raking at the Tokyo Dome on Saturday night in exhibition play against the Yomiuri Giants. Ohtani slugged a Titanic two run home run to right field to give the Dodgers a 4-0 lead and sent 42,000 fans standing and roaring for Ohtani.

#3 Miami Marlins outfielder Jesus Sanchez will be on the injured list for four weeks due to a oblique injury according to Marlins manager Clayton McCullough. Sanchez got hurt while playing in a spring training game against the Houston Astros. Sanchez 27 was a key hitter in the Miami line up last season hitting 18 home runs, 64 RBIs and 16 stolen bases an hit .252. He’ll be a bat that will be missed.

#4 Texas Rangers pitcher Jon Gray suffered a right wrist injury on Friday night which resulted in a fracture. Colorado Rockies first baseman Michael Toglia led off the fourth inning and lined one that struck Gray in the right wrist and will take him out of the rotation. The injuries are piling up for Rangers manager Bruce Bochy as left hand pitcher Cody Bradford is out with elbow soreness, pitcher Tyler Mahle is out forearm soreness. Not a great way to start the season as Bochy will have to work around the injuries to his pitching staff.

#5 Sacramento Athletic hitters are making good contact in spring training taking a look at some of the spring averages, starting with Lawrence Butler .355, 2 home runs, 7 RBIs, Shea Langeliers .348, 1 home run, 2 RBIs, Luis Urias .303, one home run, seven RBIs to name a few hitters who are doing some raking in the Cactus League for the A’s.

Fiers’ no-hitter against Reds is lights out after 1:38 delay in 2-0 win

photo credit nbcsports.com screen shot by @adriangarro: Oakland A’s pitcher Mike Fiers is exuberant after tossing a complete, no hit game against the Cincinnati Reds as A’s catcher Josh Phegley prepares to meet Fiers on the mound Tuesday night at the Oakland Coliseum.

by Jerry Feitelberg

OAKLAND — People in baseball say “you never know what you are going to see at a baseball game.” Tuesday nights game featured Mike Fiers tossing his second career no-hitter. Fiers had everything working for him as he did not allow the hard-hitting Cincinnati Reds a single hit. The A’s won the game 2-0. The game was delayed about an hour and forty minutes due to a malfunction of the lights in left field, Play started at 8:45 pm.

In most games when a no-hitter occurs, pitchers are helped out by excellent fielding. The A’s made two great defensive plays in the sixth inning. Second baseman Jurickson Profar, who has been maligned for his poor defensive play this season, made a sensational catch robbing Kyle Farmer of a hit. The ball was hit into short right field and Profar made a diving catch to prevent the Reds from recording their first hit of the game. The next batter, Joey Votto, slammed a ball to deep left-center-field. Ramon Laureano made a leaping catch and robbed Votto of a home run. Fiers walked two hitters in the seventh, but he was helped when the A’s made a 6-4-3 double play.

In the bottom of the second, the A’s put a run on the board to grab an early 1-0 lead. With two out and Stephen Piscotty on first, Profar doubled into the right-field corner. Piscotty scored all the way from first and was called safe when the Reds’ catcher missed the tag.

The A’s added another run in the bottom of the seventh. With two, out, Profar slammed his third dinger of the year over the right-center-field wall. The A’s led 2-0.

Fiers continued his mastery of the Reds as he set them down in order in the eighth and ninth innings to record his second career no-hitter.

Game Notes: Jurickson Profar was not only a defensive star Tuesday night, but he also drove in both runs for the A’s, He drove in Piscotty with the A’s first run in the second, and his home run in the seventh gave the A’s their second run.

Bob Melvin said that “it was a great night.” He also said that it was no fun for me after he reached 120 pitches.”

Fiers threw 131 pitches as he won his second career no-hitter. His first came when he was a member of the Houston Astros and he no-hit the LA Dodgers.

Melvin also said that Fiers “was using all his pitches to be more effective.”

Mike Fiers had this to say about Bob Melvin: “I was ‘really thankful for him leaving me in.'”

When asked about the one hour and 40 delay due to the malfunction of the lights in left field, Fiers replied: “it didn’t affect me.

Fiers also said this about his performance: “I had to keep them off balance.” He did exactly that.

The line score for the game was this: A’s: two runs five hits and one error. Reds: no runs, no hits and one error.

It was the eighth no-hitter in Oakland history and 13th in A’s history. Fiers’ no-hitter is the 300th in MLB history, and he is the 34th pitcher with multiple no-hitters.

Matt Olson played his first game of the season. He was placed on the IL on March 25th after breaking his right hamate bone.

The A’s improved to 16-21 and the Reds dropped to 15-21. Tyler Mahle’s record fell to 0-5, and Fiers evened his improved to 3-3.

Time of game was two hours and 25 minutes. 11,749 people watched Fiers pitch his historical masterpiece.

Up Next: Game two of the three-game series will be at the Oakland Coliseum Wednesday night. Game time will be at 7:07 pm. The A’s will send lefty Brett Anderson to the hill and Sonny Gray, the former A’s ace, will pitch for the Reds.
