That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Podcast and AM Radio today

Podcast and AM Radio today

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

According to Nielsen, AM and FM radio reach 78 million Americans every month. However, this audience represents a decades-long decline. Now, more than ever, the Podcast has come of age, and some of the biggest shows with the biggest audiences are on Podcasts, not on AM/FM radio. Podcasts are ‘eating up ‘ regularly over-the-air radio and the audiences generated by podcast are undisputable.

KNBR 680AM San Francisco, a Cumulus Media station, recently laid off popular sports stalk host Tom Tolbert and John Lund amid company layoffs. The world of radio (specifically AM radio) is shrinking, and a lot of it has to do with Podcasts of all sorts, including sports.

One of the most popular podcasts nationwide is Stephen A. Smith’s Podcast show ” iHeart Radio; it is sports-oriented, but also, in today’s world of social media, Mr.Smith does political interviews with all kinds of celebrities who are not necessarily involved in sports.

His style is provocative, and his commentary makes lots of news, like in 2021, when he said that Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese mega-star of the World Champion LA Dodgers, shouldn’t be the face of baseball because he uses an interpreter.

The Asian American community criticized his comments. Later, Smith apologized for causing angst with his remarks. Nevertheless, these shows have a rather large audience compared to local sports talk shows in our cities nationwide.

Like a podcast hosted by Charles Barkley and Ernie Johnson, many other podcasts cover topics beyond basketball. Other popular sports podcasts across the country are The Bill Simmons Podcast, Pardon My Take, The Dan LeBatard with Stugotz, and Fantasy Footballers, to mention a few.

However, perhaps the behemoth of the podcast is the Joe Rogan Podcast, which has around 15 million viewers per show on Spotify and 18 million on YouTube. Joe Rogan covers everything and all celebrities, including sports and politics.

Many of the most prominent personalities have appeared in the Joe Rogan Experience, including Mike Tyson, Kanye West, Quentin Tarantino, Elon Musk, and most recently, Donald Trump, who was running for President and appeared on Mr.Rogan’s show for over three hours unedited live interview drawing an audience on the dozens of millions of listeners.

Vice President Kamla Harris, the Democratic nominee, was also invited onto his show but her campaign confirmed that she would not be interviewed on the show before election day. Harris’s handlers wanted to know if they did “edit” on the show, but the Rogan producers told him, they do not edit, everything is aired live. So Harris missed a massive audience by not appearing on The Rogan show, which is listened to by people from 30-to-45 years of age.

The Joe Rogan Experience podcast is the most listened-to podcast in the United States. Most recently, Chris Wallace, who worked for CNN, resigned from his job as a political reporter and plans to have his own Podcast. Chris Wallace is the son of the late famous CBS (of 60 Minutes fame) Journalist Mike Wallace.

In some markets, many radio stations, AM or FM, carry syndicated program on a barter basis. They receive the program in exchange for agreeing to run some of the producer’s commercials, and then the radio can sell the remaining commercial time to other advertisers.

Some may even give you air time for goods or services other than cash—anything to survive. These include Major League Baseball Broadcast, among other sports-oriented programming. This is done in many languages across the country.

I remember working for an independent local radio station many years ago that paid some of its talent with trades like food, sports tickets, travel, hotels, etc. In some markets, this (which is legal) is still going on.

Individual producers find time available on radio stations and agree to pay for the time, as they can then sell and run their sponsors on the show(s). Television’s advantage over radio when it comes to programming is that in the case of English/Spanish, many television carry shows and offer SAP in Spanish, which is very popular for sports broadcasts.

Everything on TV has an SAP advantage over radio. Especially in the United States, where English and Spanish are the two most spoken languages.

Podcast is a “new thing”in the world of communications, but there is no doubt is here to stay and it is getting bigger an more popular by the minute. We live in the fast moving world of communications. With AI already here, only God knows what’s next. Note: In 2004. Adam Curry and Dave Winer are credited with the invention of podcasting. Who exactly did what is up for dispute, but in the end these are the two guys who got it rolling.

Ejim, Gonzaga The Opening Acts In Cal’s Opponent Showcase

By Morris Phillips

One after another, accomplished players and talented teams cross paths with the Cal Bears, starting Thursday night at Gonzaga.

Canadian Olympian Yvonne Ejim and the Zags are up first, on the occasion of their first game following a lopsided loss at Stanford that dropped Gonzaga out of the Top 25 national rankings after one week of the season. The Zags scored four points in the first quarter, and lost by 31 to Stanford, who essentially switched places with their non-conference rival in the national polls.

Two seasons ago, Gonzaga registered an 18-point win over Stanford that stands as their best in program history, with the Cardinal then ranked 3rd nationally. Now the Zags are looking for a quick rebound and a return to grace, and Ejim, on track to become the leading scorer in Gonzaga history later this season, is the barometer for that effort. Once again, Cal occupies the unenviable spot as the team that must face a quality team one game after they were knocked around by Stanford.

Coach Charmin Smith knows her Bears need to be ready, especially early in the game on Thursday in a loud environment in Spokane. But the themes and motivations aren’t Smith’s concerns, better defense and offensive consistency from her group are. But after three, easy wins by an average of 37 points, Smith and Cal sense the urgency of their first road trip.

“We need to make a statement of our own,” she said.

Last season in Berkeley, the Bears let Gonzaga escape with a 78-70 win in overtime, after the hosts led most of the first half, and regained several leads in the fourth quarter. That Cal team needed bench support that was lacking with Ioanna Krimili out injured, and Michelle Onyiah limited by foul trouble. Marta Suarez and Cal’s departed backcourt of Leilani McIntosh and McKayla Williams all played at least 43 of the 45 minutes that day, and the Bears wilted late and were outscored 13-5 in the overtime period.

Cal has Krimili, in her 5th year, this time, along with experienced, transfer guards, Kayla Williams (USC), Jayda Noble (Washington) and capable freshman Lola Donez and Zahra King. The Zags are trying to find their hyper pace in the absence of graduated twins Kaylynne and Kayleigh Truong. New starters Claire O’Connor and UConn transfer Ines Bettencourt aren’t as swift as the Truong twins and that in turn limits Ejim’s effectiveness in transition, where she excels.

“We have to stop her in transition,” Smith said of limiting Ejim. “We can’t let her get easy baskets. And at the other end, we have to make her guard.”

The Bears will play as many as 13 teams this season that currently have a place in the Top 25 or in the next group of 10 to 15 that are getting votes. Stanford is the only one of the 13 that Cal will play twice, so scouting and preparedness will be crucial in all of these meetings. Cal may have an idea what to expect from Ejim, who was limited to 12 points against Stanford, a point total she’s exceeded in 36 of her last 39 games. But they need to be up to speed on O’Connor and Bettencourt, along with Maud Huijbens, who played just 19 minutes against Cal last season, but will likely play more than 30 on Thursday.

Natalia Ackerman, who decided to continue her college basketball career only a month before school started, is Cal’s secret weapon. In her first three games at Cal, after four, injury-plagued years at Cal Poly, Ackerman has 22 points, 18 rebounds, five steals and three blocks in just 33 minutes on the floor. Matched against inexperienced reserves, she’s thrived, doing a little of everything for Cal as their biggest threat outside their starting five. Smith said, she’s not surprised as Ackerman’s return to form followed her health returning in the off-season when she debated whether she wanted to play for a fifth season.

Smith said she’s reluctant to restrict any of her shooters outside of Krimili and Lulu Twidale, who have combined to start the season a scorching 23 of 45 shooting from 3-point distance. The rest of the Bears are 11 of 38, 29 percent, but have provided the Bears with the desired spacing on offense that creates driving lanes to the basket. It’s Smith’s belief that the other shooters will become more efficient as the season progresses.

“The more threes,’ the merrier,” Smith said.

Cardinal Frustrated and Withstood the Lumberjacks 90-64, on a Tuesday Night inside Maples

Maxime Raynaud forward (42) throws down against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks at Maple Pavilion in Palo Alto on Tue Nov 12, 2024 (Stanford Cardinal photo)

By Michael Roberson

STANFORD, Calif. — Led by Maxime Raynaud’s double-double (22 points & 11 rebounds), the Stanford Cardinal (3-0, 0-0 ACC) broke the axes of the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (2-1, 0-0 Big Sky) 90-64, on a cool evening on the Farm.

The Lumberjacks opened the game by chopping a huge chunk of wood out of the Cardinal. NAU went on an 8-0 run before Stanford even knew what happened. They were held scoreless for slightly over three minutes of the first half. The visitors led by as much as nine points in the first 20 minutes.

The Cardinal finally got on the scoreboard at the 16:58 mark of the first block of the contest, when Jaylen Blakes converted two free throws. However, that was only the beginning of his squad’s scoring barrage. Stanford went on two double-digit runs (16-0 & 10-0).

Stanford led by as much as 24 points, performing a 32-point turnaround from their slow beginning of the battle with their figurative arch rival. They had to settle for a 2-point reduction in their lead at intermission, 48-26 Cardinal.

Senior forward Maxime Raynaud led everyone with 13 points, while adding eight rebounds. Junior guard Oziyah Sellers contributed 12 points, while fellow junior guard Benny Gealer dropped in 10 points. The Lumberjacks were led by senior guard Trent McLaughlin’s 12 points.

At the midway point, Stanford was leading comfortably and in total control. The only question was, could they hold on to the lead?

That became a concern at the beginning of the second half. As they did in the beginning of the game, the Lumberjacks wielded their axes to the tune of a 5-0 run, giving the impression they were going to make a dramatic comeback. That was short lived, as the Cardinal went on an 8-0 run themselves, and increased their halftime margin by seven more points. Their largest lead reached 29 points, and they led overall approximately 25 more minutes than their Copper State opponent.

The Cardinal had other players pitch in to stymie the Lumberjacks. Blakes scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, and both Raynaud (22) and Ryan Agarwal (15) added 9 points to their first half tallies. Gealer (10) did not score in the second stanza, but did give two assists (5), while Sellers (17) scored five more points.

Northern Arizona had two teammates join McLaughlin (20) in the double-figure category. Junior guard Oakland Fort and redshirt-junior forward Carson Towt had 13 and 11 points to their respective totals.

With the latest victory, (90-64) Stanford had their first 3-0 start in five years (2019-2020).

The Cardinal will next be in action Sunday, November 17, hosting the UC Davis Aggies at 1:00 PM PDT on ACCNX. NAU stays in California and heads East to Stockton, Thursday, November 14, to take on the Pacific Tigers at 7:00 PM PDT.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria:

#1 Tony how important is this bye week after the Raiders have lost five straight games.

#2 In the losing streak the Raiders played some tough customers one amongst them the Kansas City Chiefs back on Sun Oct 27th. The Chiefs actually pulled out a 27-20 win when they heard the Raiders footsteps and came away with a fourth quarter rally to hold on and win the game.

#3 There was the previous home game that the Raiders were crushed by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sun Oct 13 at Allegiant Stadium 32-13. Steelers quarterback Justin Fields was 14-24 for 145 yards. Fields didn’t throw or rush for a touchdown but the Steelers certainly got a lot of offense in that game.

#4 Speaking of offense in the Raiders last game Sun Nov 3 against the Cincinnati Bengals in Cincinnati the Bengals put up some big numbers with quarterback Joe Burrow under center throwing 27-39 for 251 yards and here’s where it hurt the Raiders five touchdowns by Burrow either by passing or rushing in the 41-24 win.

Kings Get Whitewashed By Spurs 116-96; San Antonio’s Wembanyama’s 34 points leads the way

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama (1) is defended by the Sacramento Kings forward Domantas Sabonis (right) at Frost Bank in San Antonio on Mon Nov 11, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The Sacramento Kings (6-4) came out in the first quarter with great energy winning the first 12 minutes against the San Antonio Spurs (4-6) 26-22. That was about all they could muster losing the game 116-96. The Spurs won all of the remaining quarters in the game.

The overtime win yesterday over the Suns weighed on the team. They had lost their sixth man Malik Monk to injury in that game and they will happily hop a plane and head home to Sacramento for a four game home-stand which begins on Wednesday.

Game recap: The answer came early for Sacramento. They took a first quarter lead 26-22. They continued to push that lead in the second quarter taking a 33-27 lead to open the second 12 minutes.

The Spurs continued to push the issue pulling to within one point 33-32 after having trailed by nine points earlier in the quarter. At 7:36 the Spurs took the lead 37-36. Sacramento took back to lead but by the slimmest of margins and this game went back and forth. San Antonio’s superstar Victor Wembanyama had scored 13 points in 13 minutes. Sacramento would have pull out all the stops dismiss their fatigue and fight for this one.

At the half, the Spurs led 60-55 after trailing by nine points. Had fatigue caught up with the Kings? We would find out in the second half of play.

In the third quarter, the Kings just plain ran out of steam. They were missing shot after shot and after three the Spurs had a 84-71 lead. Sacramento typically has had some very productive fourth quarters and they would need to step up both their offense and defense if they would have any chance in this game.

The Spurs continued to extend their lead in the fourth quarter leaving the Kings in the dust. With 10:13 left in the game the Kings trailed by the score of 75-87. Victor Wembanyaama had already hit 25 points with 12 rebounds.

Kevin Huerter had not hit a single three and with 8:19 left in the game the Spurs had a 95-78 lead. Huerter had only scored two points, and Keegan Murray had hit five points. Sacramento had a lot of ground to make up and they had to get within striking distance in the final three minutes of this game.

It just didn’t happen. The Kings fell further and further behind and with less than a minute left in the game trailed 116-96. That would be the final and Sacramento had suffered a 20 point loss.

The Kings protected the ball well in this game with only 11 turnovers but the missed shots weighed heavy on the outcome of the game. Sacramento hit 10 threes but the Spurs were on fire scoring 22 shots from outside and the Kings couldn’t manage Victor Wembanyama.

He hit six shots from downtown, had 14 rebounds and finished the game with 34 points. The Kings Kevin Huerter finished the game with a disappointing two points and Keegan Murray was equally disappointing with five points. The team will be happy to put this game behind them as they head home for a four-game home-stand. It was close to being one of their worst games this season.

Game recap: Monday night the Kings took on the Spurs (4-6) at Frost Bank Center. The Spurs are on a downward trend losing three of their past five games. Saturday night their Head Coach Greg Popovich became seriously ill and missed the game and will not be on the bench for this game.

This has been a blow for the team attributing to part of their decline. The Kings suffered a loss of their own Sunday night in Phoenix losing Malik Monk to a right ankle sprain. There is so far no indication as to the seriousness of the injury nor a timeline for his return.

The Kings really need their sixth man since their bench has been a bit lackluster although Keon Ellis has been a defensive powerhouse. The Kings came into this game after beating the Phoenix Sun handing them their second loss of the year 127-118 on Sunday. It was an epic battle and the question remains; how much gas do these guys have left in the tank.

Tuesday will be a travel day for the team. They will be grateful to get some much needed rest on Tuesday before taking on the Phoenix Suns Wednesday night at Golden 1 Center. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 7:00 PM. In the coming days the Kings will be watching for some update on the extent and possible return date of Malik Monk.

Sharks Fall 4-3 to Flyers in Shootout

San Jose Sharks Tim Liljegren (left), clears the puck away from the Philadelphia Flyers Ryan Poehling (right) in the second period at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Mon Nov 11, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Mary Walsh

The San Jose Sharks were defeated by the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 in a shootout Monday. Eric Johnson, Travis Konecny and Matvei Michkov scored for the Flyers. Samuel Ersson made 27 saves for the win. Jack Thompson, Mikael Granlund and Barclay Goodrow scored for the Sharks. Vitek Vanacek made 39 saves for the Sharks.

The game was fairly one-sided, but changed sides midway through. The Flyers scored three, then the Sharks scored three. What accounted for this shift, at least on the part of the Sharks? Barclay Goodrow said:

“We had to tighten things up. I think by this point in the year we know how we need to play in order to be successful and when we stray away from that you get the results that you saw early in the game. So I think we dialed it back in and we’ve just got to find a way to play like that from the start.”

Sharks Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky also talked about reasons for the slow start: “Back to back probably would be the first part. We just couldn’t get into the game, we had some pushes at times, we did some good things at times. But just couldn’t play with that same energy and competitiveness I would say as last night.”

Eric Johnson opened the scoring 1:40 into the game. Anthony Richard got control of the puck coming out of the Flyers’ zone and skated into the Sharks’ zone with Johnson. A cross-ice pass got around Jack Thompson to Johnson for a wrist shot that beat Vanacek. That was the first shot of the game.

Travis Konecny made it 2-0 with a power play goal at 15:56. In a very pretty play, The puck went from Emil Andrea on the blue line to Matvei Michkov near the goal line and back up to Konecny in the slot for a snap shot.

Michkov scored his own goal at 5:09 of the second period, breaking away in the neutral zone. Two Sharks chased him into the zone after he caught a pass right on the Sharks blue line. His shot went under Vanacek and in. Ryan Poehling and Egor Zamula got the assists.

Barclay Goodrow fought Nicck Seeler at 12:09 of the period, possibly motivating the Sharks for the comeback that started a few minutes later. The fight was the only penalty called in the period. Givani Smith also fought Eric Johnson right after the first goal of the game, but that fight did not lead to a scoring spree.

Jack Thompson got the Sharks on the board at 15:29 of the second. William Eklund carried the puck in and sent it across the goal mouth at the last moment. It went off of Thompson’s skate and in. Mikael Granlund also got an assist.

Granlund made it 3-2 at 18:33 of the second. Eklund controlled the puck off an offensive zone draw and skated behind the net. Instead of continuing around, he doubled back with a pass to Granlund for a shot on the short side. Granlund’s wrist shot squeaked in under the bar. Assists went to Eklund and Fabian Zetterlund.

Early in the third period. Givani Smith made an impressive save as Sharks and Flyers scrambled in front of the net. The puck was on its way to the line but Vanecek couldn’t see it. Smith swept it back and under his goaltender.

Barclay Goodrow tied the game at 17:36 of the thirds period. Henry Thrun sent the puck to the net from the point. Goodrow snapped it in from a bad angle. Assists went to Thrun and Cody Ceci.

At the end of the third period, Michkov took a penalty for punching Macklin Celebrini in the face a couple of times, putting the Sharks on the power play to start overtime. The Sharks had four shots in overtime and the Flyers had two.

Owen Tippett, Matvei Michkov and Travis Konecny shot for the Flyers. Michkov and Konecny scored.

Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith shot for the Sharks but Ersson stopped both of them.

The Sharks next play on Thursday at 4:00 PM PT, in New York against the Rangers.
