Bay FC match recap: Bay FC gets 3-0 clean sheet against North Carolina

SAN JOSE–Bay FC returned home for the first time after the international break on Saturday afternoon as they hosted the North Carolina Courage in a 3-0 shutout at PayPal Park

A tremendous run by Karlie Lema saw her fight through the defender, but she was able to remain on her feet and knocked the ball into the goal in the 15th minute, giving Bay an early 1-0 lead. Moments after kickoff, Racheal Kundananji attempted to make North Carolina’s goalkeeper, Kailen Sheridan, pay for coming too far off of her line. It was a respectable attempt, but the ball sailed over the goal.

Less than two minutes after the opening goal, Lema got her second of the night after a well placed pass by Alex Pfeiffer. Lema’s second goal marked the second brace in club history, and the first in nearly two years. 

Despite a physical first half, there were no cards shown in the first 45 minutes. The score remained 2-0 heading into the halftime break. 

North Carolina made one change at halftime, taking off Feli Rauch for Erica Meg Parkinson. 

Kennedy Fuller was fouled right outside of the box in the 50th minute, giving Bay a free kick in a very dangerous position. Fuller put the ball on target, but it was saved by a diving Sheridan. Four minutes later, Kundananji would extend Bay’s lead, making it 3-0 with more than half an hour remaining in the match. 

North Carolina thought they scored just past the hour mark, as Bay FC made a goal line clearance, but after a short delay, it was not reviewed and there was no goal on the play. Moments later, the Courage made a trio of substitutions to try to launch a late comeback. 

Caroline Conti entered the match for Bay FC in the 67th minute, taking the place of Alex Pfeiffer. 

A major collision between Sheridan and Maycee Bell caused a short delay in the 71st minute, but both players returned to their feet and remained in the game. After the stoppage, Bay made a pair of substitutions. Keira Barry and Dorian Bailey entered the match for Lema and Hannah Bebar. With roughly five minutes remaining, Bay made a couple more substitutions, bringing Kelli Hubly and Cristiana Girelli into the match for Claire Hutton and Kundananji. 

Jordan Silkowitz made a big save in the late 88th minute to maintain Bay’s clean sheet with time about to expire. 

Bay FC held onto both the victory and the clean sheet, as they defeated North Carolina 3-0.

SEATTLE–Landen Roupp was lights out, as he gave up just two hits over seven shutout innings, and the Giants’ offense exploded for seven runs, capped off by a grand slam off the bat of Willy Adames. The Giants shut out the Mariners 7-0 in Seattle to open the second half Friday, and have won three in a row for just the sixth time this season.

The first half, well, the first half was an absolute nightmare for the Giants. After four-straight mediocre seasons around .500—two of them right at .500—the Giants came into this season with moderately-high expectations under new manager Tony Vitello.

Vitello. Unfortunately, they really couldn’t get anything going, and struggled quite badly at times, especially in April and May. 

The Giants were in Seattle to kick off the second half Vitello and his players saw the start of the second half as a reset. 

“It’s nice to kinda see the fresh-start attitude and vibe that’s going around,” said Vetello. “The future is not here yet, and the past is over and done with, so the best thing we can do is focus on Friday.

Those were wise words from the Giants’ skipper. They were also a fitting answer to a question asked by yours truly, who has always struggled to focus on today. Could the Giants do a better job at that than I?

The Giants were taking on a Mariners’ team that had hovered around .500 throughout the first half. Seattle came into Friday night’s game at 48-49, and a game and a half back of the Texas Rangers in the American League West.

Landen Roupp made the start for the Giants, and he was coming off an incredible eight-inning performance against the Toronto Blue Jays on July 6. Roupp kept that momentum all the way through Friday night. He took a no-hitter into the bottom of the fourth, and he ended up giving up just two hits over seven shutout innings. 

As for the Giants’ offense, they went down 1-2-3 against Bryce Miller in the top of the first inning. They then had runners at first and third with one out in the top of the third for Bryce Eldridge. However, Eldridged popped out to second, and Casey Schmitt flew out deep to center field. 

The Giants had wasted a golden opportunity. The Giants only had three innings at-bat at that point, but it seemed as if their offensive struggles were going to follow them into the second half.

However, with a runner at first base and two outs in the top of the fifth, Eldridge would get another chance. This time, he hit a home run to right-center to put the Giants on the board. It was Eldridge’s ninth home run of the season.

“A few people in the dugout called a frustration homer coming,” said Vitello. “I don’t think it was frustration; [I think] it was just more determination in that following at-bat.”

“I felt like I had put on a good swing on the splitter the at-bat before,” added Eldridge. When I don’t come through with guys in scoring position, that probably makes me more mad than anything. I think that definitely triggered something in me.

The Giants caught a couple of big breaks in the top of the sixth. Mariners’ shortstop Cole Emerson was unable to execute the back end of a potential 3-6-1 double play off the bat of Jung Hoo Lee, and ended up throwing the ball away. I guess you could say it was just as good as a sacrifice.

Willy Adames struck out swinging for the second out. However, Drew Gilbert was hit by a pitch, and Drew Cavanaugh walked to load the bases for Luis Arraez.

This will be an interesting two and a half weeks, as the Giants are rumored to deal their all-star second baseman at the Trade Deadline on Aug. 3. As for now, he is still here to help the Giants.

Arraez hit a ground ball to second, and Cavanaugh wisely stayed in between the ball and Mariners’ second-baseman Cole Young. Cavanaugh was able to distract Young, but avoid getting hit himself, which would have ended the inning. Young bobbled the ball, and Lee scored to make it 3-0.

The Giants would then put the game away in the top of the seventh. Adames came up with the bases loaded and one out, and he hit a grand slam off Nick Davila to right-center to make it 7-0.

After Roupp’s seven shutout inning, Jason Foley came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth for the Giants. This was a big deal for Foley, who was the primary closer for the Detroit Tigers in 2024. He did not make the Tigers out of Spring Training last season, and then he ended up having season-ending surgery on his right shoulder.

He finally got to pitch in his first big league game since Game 1 of the 2024 American League Wild Card Series against the Houston Astros at then-Minute Maid Park in Houston. Foley ended up throwing a one, two three inning.

The Mariners made things “interesting” against Caleb Kilian in the bottom of the ninth. By interesting, I mean that J.P. Crawford reached on a rare error by Adames to start the inning. Of course, nothing came of it, and Kilian retired the next three.

Landed Roupp got the win, and gave credit to his catcher, Drew Cavanaugh. Bryce Miller took the loss. Roupp and Miller both came into tonight’s game with 6-8 records. Roupp is now 7-8. Miller is now 6-9. 

As I said in the lead, the Giants have their sixth three-game winning streak of the year, as they improve to 42-55. Tomorrow, they can do something that they have not done all season, and that is win four-straight.

“We played really well tonight, but we only [got] one win,” said Vitello “Tomorrow’s a new battle.”

“It looked like we’ve been playing the last four days,” joked Eldridge. Eldridge then more-seriously continued, “I think the break was good for us. Obviously, the first half was tough for all of us. We haven’t been playing up to our expectations, but obviously, like Vitello said, [the] big thing we’ve been talking about is really using that break to reset mentally [and] physically, and get ready for the second half. That was a good way to start.”

“I’m here to help this team win, however they ask me to do that,” continued Eldridge. The only thing that matters to me at this point right now is winning, and trying to get [back] into the race. Obviously, we[‘ve] got some work to do. I’m going to continue [to play] wherever they put me in the lineup.”

The one thing I will give this team is that, despite their struggles, they have truly played hard all year. 

The Giants are nine and a half games back of the Miami Marlins for the third wild card in the National League with 65 games left. Are they going to come back from that? Most likely not, but it’s Baseball, so you never know.

Just over three weeks ago, on June 24, the Red Sox were 14 games under .500 at 32-46. Well, they have since won 16 of their last 18, and 11-straight to climb all the way back to .500.

The Giants were 16 games under .500 after their loss to the Colorado Rockies last Friday. You never know.

The Giants will be right back at it Saturday. Logan Webb (5-7, 3.86 ERA) will look to bounce back from two rough starts to end the first half. Bryan Woo (7-6, 4.23 ERA) will take the ball for Seattle.

The game is on FOX, so first pitch is at 5:08 p.m. PDT.

  • Prior to the game, catcher Daniel Susac was reinstated from the 10-Day Injured List. To make room for Susac on the roster, Eric Haase was designated for assignment.
  • The Giants made a flurry of minor league moves over the All-Star Break, and they are as follows:

Infielder Parks Harver and outfielder Bo Davidson were brought up from Double-A Richmond to Triple-A Sacramento. Harber knocked in two runs with a double in the River Cats’ 5-2 win over the Albuquerque Isotopes. Davidson went 3-for-5, with a hit in his first at-bat.

Infielder Gavin Kilen, who was the Giants’ first-round draft pick last season, outfielder Dakota Jordan and outfielder Trevor Cohen were brought up from High-A Eugene to Double-A Richmond.

A’s Took A Friday Night Detour to Skidsville 23-4

The Sacramento Athletics were hoping the All-Star break would provide a reset, but Washington had other plans by sending the A’s to the showers with a 23-4 devestating loss. The Nationals broke open a close game with a series of big innings and handed the Green and Gold another frustrating defeat, extending a stretch that has seen Sacramento searching for answers.

Entering the series, the A’s had dropped nine straight and 13 of their previous 14 games, with both the offense and pitching staff struggling to find consistency.

The opening two innings belonged to the pitchers. Gage Jump worked around a quiet first inning by striking out two, while Washington starter Cade Cavalli matched him pitch for pitch. Carlos Cortes collected Sacramento’s first hit with a line-drive single, but Jacob Wilson bounced into a double play and Tyler Soderstrom struck out to erase the early opportunity. Jump then retired the Nationals in order in the second, adding two more strikeouts to keep the game scoreless.

Washington finally cracked the scoreboard in the third. Jacob Young worked a walk and Nasim Nuñez followed with a single before Jump retired James Wood for the second out. After a brief on-field delay, Curtis Mead ripped a two-run double into left, scoring both runners. Andrés Chaparro followed immediately with a sharp RBI single, giving the Nationals a 3-0 advantage.

The Athletics answered in the fourth with one swing. Wilson reached on a single, bringing Soderstrom to the plate. The left-handed slugger launched a two-run homer to center, trimming the deficit to one and briefly injecting life into Sacramento’s offense. It was one of the few bright spots for an offense that had scored only four runs over its previous five games entering the contest.

That momentum disappeared almost instantly. Washington struck back in the fifth when Chaparro crushed a two-run homer after Mead singled, stretching the lead to 5-2. Later in the inning, after Dylan Crews stole second following a walk, rookie catcher Harry Ford drilled a two-run homer to center. The Nationals had suddenly built a comfortable cushion while Sacramento’s bullpen struggled to slow the rally.

Mead continued to torment Athletics pitching in the sixth. Young walked again, Nuñez singled, stole second, and both runners scored on James Wood’s single to right. Mead followed with another double, and Chaparro lined a two-run single to center that became even more costly when a fielding error allowed him to reach second. CJ Abrams added an RBI double, and Daylen Lile capped the seven-run inning with a run-scoring single. By the time the dust settled, Washington had blown the game wide open.

The Nationals kept their foot on the gas in the seventh. Nuñez singled once more before Mead ripped his third double of the game. Chaparro then delivered the knockout blow, hammering his second home run of the afternoon, a three-run shot to left. Chaparro finished with two home runs and six RBIs, while Mead enjoyed a spectacular afternoon with three doubles, a single, and five RBIs. Nuñez reached base repeatedly, Young scored three times, and Ford added a home run and three RBIs to an offense that never stopped producing.

Sacramento continued to battle despite the lopsided score. Tommy White, making his major league debut after earning his promotion with a strong season in the minors, collected a double for his first big league hit. Joshua Kuroda-Grauer also stayed hot with a single and a ground-rule double. The rookie infielder entered the game tied for the second-most hits by an Athletics player through his first 12 major league games, and he continued to strengthen that impressive start.

Shea Langeliers added another highlight in the eighth, lining a solo homer to left for Sacramento’s third run. Henry Bolte later drove home Kuroda-Grauer with a ground-rule double after a Washington error helped keep the inning alive, but it was far too little to threaten a comeback.

Washington added one final exclamation point in the ninth after the Athletics turned to position player Carlos Cortes on the mound. Dylan Crews doubled home a run, Ford added an RBI single, and Daylen Lile capped the scoring with a three-run homer to center.

Sacramento showed flashes with Soderstrom’s two-run blast, Langeliers’ solo shot, White’s first career hit, and another productive day from Kuroda-Grauer, but Washington’s relentless attack, led by Chaparro and Mead, proved overwhelming from the middle innings forward.

The series continues Saturday when J.T. Ginn (7-6, 3.67 ERA, 82 K) gets the ball for the Athletics opposite Zack Littell (7-6, 4.90 ERA, 94 K) for Washington, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Pacific as Sacramento looks to finally put the brakes on its lengthy skid.

NHL podcast Len Shapiro:

#1 The NHL released it’s 2026-27 schedules Thursday and the league has added regular season game from 82 to 84 games for this upcoming season.

#2 For the first time in NHL history the league will open the regular season in September as the Carolina Hurricanes will face the Florida Panthers in Sunrise FL on Sep 29 for a 2pm PDT 5pm EDT puck drop.

#3 The NHL had an 82 regular season schedule running since the 1995-96 season and there were NHL teams that complained about an imbalanced amount of divisional games that were against rivals. Before the season got underway a few months ago, I did not expect the A’s to do well in one key department, pitching. And, yes, I hate to say I was right. Not only the A’s recently fire their pitching coach, Scott Emerson. Scott Emerson served as the Athletics’ pitching coach for 9 years, from June 2017 to July 2026. I remember when he first got the job in Oakland; I spoke with him during a kind of group interview with other reporters at the Oakland Coliseum, and later on a one-on-one basis for our broadcast.

‘Manager Bob Melvin has always considered Emerson a good man, and he is. The problem is very simple: you can be the best coach, but you need some talent to work with. Just like a manager, as good as a manager can be, he also needs talented players. Although it is not baseball, this also applies here. Brazilian jockey Jorge Ricardo holds the official world record for the most horse racing career wins, with over 13,000 victories, however and “no pun intended” if the horse that Ricardo was riding was limping or was not performing well, he would never have won 13,000 races.

Luis Severino was the #1 starting pitcher for the Athletics at the start of the 2026 season. Manager Mark Kotsay named the right-harder as the staff leader and Opening Day starter against the Toronto Blue Jays.  Severino has spent the majority of the season on the injured list due to right arm and shoulder injuries, after an MRCI revealed a strain; he was transferred to the 50-day list in late June. Severino signed a three-year, $67 million free agent contract with the Athletics before the season. He was their Número uno pitcher, but in the real world, with most teams, he would have been at best a #3 in the rotation. In the land of the blind  a one-eye person is king,.

Are the A’s buyers or sellers?   The Athletics are trending toward being sellers at the August 3rd trade deadline. What the A’s do with a very good lineup, powerful, young, and aggressive, depends on this second half if their pitching performs, or if it just ‘ lays an egg again.

A’s begin the second half in penultimate place in the AL West with 41-55, 8 games behind the first-place Texas Rangers. How well they will do depends on whether they can make some adjustments with their pitching. They remind me of the old Volvo I had: a great car, but there was always something going wrong, and at the end, I just got rid of it.

The A’s have some young players that could bring something good in return, but they are not going to trade for Tarik Skubal, that is for sure. So they will keep playing at their temporary yard, and like an old saying, they are going to “play it by ear”. See what happens, but do not expect them to make the playoffs; however, if they do, I would be very happy for them.

#1 The Cleveland Cavaliers are the favorites to land LeBron James but are not unbeatable as other clubs are vying for LeBron’s service that include the Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, and Golden State Warriors.

#2 The Cavs are a favorite amongst oddsmakers because it would bring LeBron back home to Ohio and he gets to finish up with the club he started with.

#3 The Philadelphia 76ers Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and Jaylen Brown are also encouraging LeBron to join them as a tandem. A LeBron presence would add to the Sixers chances to chasing down a NBA Championship.
