Kings eliminated miss playoffs in tough loss to Memphis 116-110

The Sacramento Kings Buddy Hield (24) drives against the Memphis Grizzlies Dillion Brooks (24) on Thu May 13, 2021 in Memphis (AP News photo)

The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Thursday evening. The Kings were slated to take on the Memphis Grizzlies after playing the Oklahoma City Thunder at home on Tuesday. The Kings beat the Thunder on Tuesday and were looking to keep that momentum going on the road against the Grizzlies. The Kings unfortunately fell against the Grizzlies on Thursday night 116-110 and were officially eliminated from playoff contention. However, before we discuss Thursday’s game let’s revisit the Kings win against the Thunder on Tuesday night.

Flashback Tuesday: The Kings downed the Thunder on Tuesday after falling behind in the first half. The Kings may have had one of the best quarters of the season in the third as they outscored the Thunder 41-18. The Kings with the help of Terence Davis, who has taken a more active role in the absence of key Kings starters, scored 27 points. The Kings beat the Thunder by the final of 122-106.

Thursday night recap: The Kings were set to take on the Memphis Grizzlies for the first game of a back-to-back on Thursday night at 5 PM PST in Memphis.

In the first half, the Kings hung in with the playoff bound Grizzlies. In the first quarter, the Kings were outscored by the Grizzlies 36-32 as Memphis started the game red hot shooting the ball. In the second quarter, the Kings tightened up the defense and outscored the Grizzlies 28-23 to take a 60-59 halftime lead. The Kings would need to seal the deal to keep their playoff hopes alive. However, the third quarter wouldn’t be so kind.

In the second half, it was the third quarter that ultimately did the Kings in. The Grizzlies managed to outscore the Kings 30-23 in the third quarter to take a six point lead into the final 12 minutes of action. If the Kings hoped to keep their season alive they would need a rally. Unfortunately, the Kings didn’t get one. The Grizzlies and Kings both scored 27 points in the final quarter as Memphis downed the Kings 116-110 to end the Kings season hopes. The Kings already had an uphill battle to fight, but Thursday’s loss was the last nail in the coffin. The Kings were led in defeat by Justin James who had a tremendous game scoring 31 points. Dillon Brooks led the Grizzlies with 30 points in victory.

With the Kings eliminated from playoff contention for the 15th cod consecutive years. It is a disappointing end to the seasons hopes for the Kings who came into the year with high expectations.

Up Next: The Kings remain in Memphis to take on Grizzlies for the second night of a back-to-back on Friday at 6 PM PST.

Duggar’s 5th inning home run helps pace Giants in 3-1 win over Bucs

The San Francisco Giants Steven Duggar is greeted at home plate by Anthony DeSclafani after hitting a solo home run in the fifth inning at PNC Park in Pittsburgh against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thu May 13, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Jessica Kwong

The San Francisco Giants relied on good pitching and Steven Duggar’s first homer in nearly two years to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 on Thursday night at PNC Park and improve to 23-41 at the top of the NL West.

Starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani in five scoreless innings allowed only one hit, a single by Jacob Stallings in the first inning.

Duggar hit his first home run since June 13, 2019 in Petco Park, to right-center field with one out in the fifth inning off rookie starting pitcher Wil Crowe. It was his seventh career homer in four seasons and broke a scoreless tie.

The Giants had not scored in the first four innings against Crowe. Duggar, who was not on the lineup until Brandon Belt was scratched shortly before first pitch due to left side tightness, stepped up to the occasion.

“You just lock it in, it’s a lot of fun,” Duggar said of the last-minute opportunity to play. “We’re always ready here, so whether you’re off the bench or starting, so a lot of fun tonight and definitely excited to get the opportunity to start.”

After Duggar’s home run, San Francisco had two more runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 3-0. Duggar and Mauricio Dubon each had two hits. Tyler Rogers pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his third save.

In five innings, Crowe allowed three runs and six hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

San Francisco nabbed their fifth victory in six games and boosted them to a season-high nine games over .500.

On Friday night, Giants right hand pitcher Kevin Gausman (3-0, 1.97 ERA) will face Pirates left hand pitcher Tyler Anderson (3-3, 3.05 ERA) for the second in the four-game series. First pitch is at 3:35 p.m.

Red Sox rout A’s 8-1; A’s Manaea shelled in first two innings for six runs

Oakland A’s starter Sean Manaea gets a new ball after surrendering a two run homer to the Boston Red Sox Bobby Dalbec as Hunter Renfroe (left) runs the bases to score ahead of Dalbec at Fenway Park in Boston on Thu May 13, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Oakland A’s (23-16) were going for a sweep of the three-game series against the Boston Red Sox (23-16). The A’s pitching kept the potent Boston lineup quiet in the first two games of the series. The Sox scored two runs in the first game and just one run Wednesday night.

Oakland sent out lefty Sean Manaea to handle the pitching chores Thursday night. Manaea was brilliant in his last outing as he held Baltimore to one run and two hits in seven and 1/3rd innings of work. As baseball fans know, left-handed pitchers have to have pinpoint control when pitching in Fenway Park.

Lefties have to keep the ball down and away to prevent the right-handed hitters from pulling the ball and keeping in the park. Manaea was not up to the task as three of the first four Red Sox hitters pounded him for three runs. Manaea was tagged for three more in the second and could not get anyone out in the third. The Red Sox went on to win 8-1.

The Red Sox put three on the board in the first inning. Red Sox second baseman, Michael Chavis, led off with a double. Manaea retired Alex Verdugo for the first out. J.D. Martinez, usually Boston’s DH, was playing in left field. Martinez singled to drive in Chavis with the first run of the game. Xander Bogaerts was the DH. Bogaerts homered to left to put the Sox up 3-0 after one inning.

The Red sox plated three more runs in the second inning. Right-fielder Hunter Renfroe led off with a single. First baseman Bobby Dalbec homered to make it 5-0. The Sox weren’t done. Manaea walked Jonathan Arauz. Manaea retired Chavis and Verdugo. J.D.Martinez singled, sending Arauz to second. Bogaerts doubled to drive in Arauz with Boston’s sixth run.

The Red Sox sent Manaea to the showers in the top of the third. The first three hitters, Christian Vasquez, Renfroe, and Dalbec, all singled to load the bases. A’s manager Bob Melvin had seen enough. He pulled Manaea from the game and brought in Deolis Guerra to pitch. Guerra got Arauz to hit into a double play. Vasquez scored to put the Sox in the driver’s seat 7-0 after three innings.

The Red Sox scored once in the sixth to lead 8-0. The A’s were able to put one on the board in the top of the eighth. The night belonged to Boston as they won 8-1.

Game Notes and Stats: With the loss, the A’s are now 23-16 for the year. Boston now has the same record as Oakland 23-16.

Sean Manaea’s line was two-plus innings of work. He allowed seven runs and ten hits. Sean’s record for the season is 3-2. The A’s bullpen went six innings and allowed one run. Deolis Guerra worked three innings and did allow a run. The Sox scored a run off Adam Kolarek. Reymin Guduan pitched two scoreless innings for the A’s

Garrett Richards’ line was six innings, five hits, and no runs. Richards won his third game of the year. He has two losses so far this season. Garrett Whitlock went three innings to earn his first save of the year.

The time of the game was two hours and fifty-five minutes. There were about 9300 fans in attendance on a chilly night in Boston.

The A’s are on their way to Minnesota to face the Twins for three games starting Friday night. Frankie Montas will go for Oakland. The Twins will send righty Matt Shoemaker out to handle the pitching chores. The game will start at 5:10 pm.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: What happens if A’s win World Series?; Will that save the team from leaving Oakland?

Former Oakland A’s owner Charlie O Finley who moved the club from Kansas City to Oakland in 1968 and won three World Series in a row. If the 2021 Oakland A’s can win the World Series this year will it help save the team? (Mercury News file photo)

Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg:

#1 What will it take to convince the Oakland City Council to realize that the Oakland A’s are a viable asset to the city? Will it take the A’s going all the way this season and winning the World Series or still that wouldn’t be good enough to save the team?

#2 A’s team president David Kaval says the A’s are committed to staying in Oakland but MLB is giving the instruction to the team to make preparations to look at other markets to possibly move to we didn’t get a chance to ask you Jerry if this is more of a pressure move by MLB or they really want the A’s to consider looking elsewhere?

#3 The A’s have been having much success they’ve won seven of their last 11 games, on the field none of the talk about them having to get a new ballpark built or they will have to move has distracted them whatsoever.

#4 Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis weighed in and said that the Raiders would welcome the A’s to Las Vegas. Davis said the Oakland City Council is not capable of getting anything done from his experience with them trying to keep the Raiders in Oakland and he wouldn’t be surprised if the A’s will join the Raiders in Vegas.

#5 The A’s have had a successful series against the Boston Red Sox the will conclude the three game series tonight as A’s starter Sean Manaea who took a no hitter into the eighth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays in his last outing (3-1 ERA 3.07) will start against the Boston Red Sox Garrett Richards (2-2 ERA 4.54) a 4:10pm first pitch.

Sounders edge Earthquakes 1-0

The San Jose Earthquakes Tommy Thompson takes the ball down field against the Seattle Sounders Wed May 12, 2021 at Pay Pal Park in San Jose (@tomthom11 photo)

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE, Calif-The San Jose Earthquakes are still looking for a recipe to beat the Seattle Sounders with. They suffered a tough 1-0 loss to its conference rival on Wednesday evening at Pay Pal Park.

San Jose had its three-game winning streak snapped. Seattle have won three games in a row and remain unbeaten to start the season . They are also unbeaten in 14 straight matches against San Jose (W8 D6) dating back to September 2015. It’s the longest active unbeaten run by any team against another in MLS.

San Jose (3-2-0) thought they had a penalty shot when an apparent hand ball by Yeimar Gomez was called by referee Baldomero Toledo just inside the box. After a video review, the call was overturned much to the dismay of Quakes head coach Matias Almeyda.

Seattle (4-0-1) drew first blood in the 18th minute. A shot from the right side by Nouhou Tolo was cleared away by Florian Jungwirth. Cristian Roldan collected the rebound and fired a shot top-shelf into the right corner past Quakes goalie JT Marcinkowski.

The Quakes best scoring chance in the first half came at the 37th minute. Eric Remedi centered a ball from just outside the net to Cade Cowell. The 17-year old striker’s one-timer was stopped by with a diving save by Sounders goalie Sefan Frei.

The Earthquakes controlled the possession 56%-44% in the opennig 45 minutes.

San Jose came out of the gate with intent to score even the score in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Two shots attempts in the 54th minute by Remedi and Carlos Fierro had the Sounders on the heels.

Raul Rui Diaz had a three minute span from the 56th minute to the 59th minute where he had two scoring chances to double Seattle’s lead but he second attempt, a chip shot from 10 yard outs sailed over the net.

Almedya substituted captain Chris Wondolowski and Andy Rios in the 65th minute looking for a repeat of the late match magic that Wondo provided last week against Real Salt Lake.

Wondo almost scored the equalizer in the 87th minute when a cross into the middle of the box led to a collision between him and Frei where the veteran goalie came out with the ball secured in his hands.

San Jose had two attempts in the final two minutes of stoppage time after Frei went down with an injury but Seattle’s defense held down the fort to preserve the victory.

GAME NOTES: San Jose had nine corner kicks. Seattle had two.

Since returning from MLS is Back in August, Raúl Ruidíaz has scored 17 goals, six more than any other MLS player (including playoffs).

Sounders left back Jordy Delem was injured with a lower body in the 7th minute and was subbed in by Shane O’Neill.

UP NEXT: San Jose continues its three-game homestand on Saturday 5/15 as they host the Portland Timbers at 7:00pm at Pay Pal Park.

Sharks Season Ends With 6-0 Loss to Vegas, Head into Pivotal Offseason

Vegas Golden Knights right wing Keegan Kolesar scores, right, is congratulated by left wing William Carrier (28) as the San Jose Sharks goaltender Alexei Melnchuk is spread eagle in front of the net (AP News photo)

By Matthew Harrington

It was a forgettable ending to a forgettable season for the San Jose Sharks, falling to the Vegas Golden Knights 6-0 at home. Marc-Andre Fleury shut out the Sharks on just 19 shots, Dylan Sikura scored a pair, and Alex Pietrangelo, Keegan Kolesar, William Carrier and Jonathan Marchessault all scored for the Golden Knights. Vegas finishes their season 82 points( including sweeping the season series against San Jose), sitting two points ahead of the Colorado Avalanche for the President’s Trophy with one game remaining for general manager Joe Sakic’s team. San Jose has missed the postseason for a second consecutive season after missing out on the expanded Bubble playoffs last season, not necessarily an unexpected result, but disappointing nonetheless.

“This organization had to take a step back to take a step forward,” said Sharks coach Bob Boughner when asked to reflect on the season. “I know that’s a bit of a cliché but that’s the absolute truth. There was a path set out early on, that started last year at the trade deadline, last hockey season. We had to live through it this year. I really believe moving forward it will be a different situation, a different set of expectations.”

The Sharks finish the season with 49 points and a 21-28-7 record, 11 points shy of the St. Louis Blues (who could add still with a game remaining on their schedule) for the last playoff spot in the West Division. While the loss brings finality to a difficult season, most questions about the team’s future remain.

“We talked about our journey and where we need to be in September when we come back to work,” said Boughner. “I talked about the young guys getting the opportunities and not expecting a job when they get back to camp. They’ve got to earn it again. The veterans, the last message I sent was ‘We can’t get anywhere as an organization if those players aren’t our best players every night. That didn’t happen every night this season.”

Wednesday night Patrick Marleau played 13:01 in the final game of his 23rd season. He finished the year with 9 points in 56 games, another season without missing a game. He played the central role in the Sharks greatest achievement on the season, appearing in career game 1,767 to match Gordie Howe for all-time games played April 17th in Minnesota.

He broke the record the following Monday in Sin City. He was on a one-year contract and hasn’t hinted if he’ll return at age 42 to add on to his 910-game Iron Man streak. If not, the Sharks 2nd overall selection in 1997 would walk away from the game with 522 goals and 589 assists over 21 seasons with the Sharks and career totals of 566 goals and 631 helpers when you add in his stints with Toronto and Pittsburgh, a surefire Hall of Fame career

Who will the expansion Seattle Kraken take in their player selection draft in the offseason? The favorite is Brent Burns who wrapped up his season with a -2 over 22:49 of ice time. He finished the season with 29 points (7g, 22a) over 56 games. He has 540 points over 715 games in teal.

Even the Sharks best player, Evander Kane, has a murky future. There has been talk about nullifying his contract mutually as he works through bankruptcy. He finished the campagin with 22 goals and 27 assists (matching a career high) and would have surely eclipsed his best single-season totals in a full-length campaign.

Alexei Melnichuk made 38 saves in just his second career NHL start. The import from the KHL Melnichuk with the Barracuda. Who will join Martin Jones at the NHL level will be the question in net, or rather one of the questions. If Jones returns or is bought out remains to be seen. He went 15-14-4 with a 3,27 GAA bolstered by a hot stretch in January where he looked like the goaltender the Sharks bet on for six years, $34.5 million for the 2018 season.

Among the bright spots for the Sharks is the fact that only one player missed time for a positive Covid-19 case in a year when teams saw their whole year derailed by widespread cases. This despite opening the year with training camp in Arizona with County health officers not permitting professional sports in Santa Clara until right around the Sharks delayed (by Covid, of course) home opener.

Also noteworthy were the jumps that second year pro Mario Ferraro and rookie Nikolai Knyzhov made on defense. Both were asked to represent their respective countries in this month’s world championships, though Knyzhov will miss it as he goes under the knife for a sports hernia. An offseason of more advancements by the young players mentioned above and others given opportunities will go a long way towards ending a two-season playoff drought.

On the upside, again, is that the Sharks own their own first round draft pick this year and could be selecting somewhere in the top ten in a draft deep in upper echelon talent at the top. They also took care of some business Wednesday morning, inking Alexander Barabanov to another one year deal at just a hair over $1 million. It’s a cap-friendly deal for a player that showed top-six talent (7 points in 8 games with San Jose) when given an opportunity to play big minutes after not getting a fair shake in stacked Toronto.

“We got to see some prospects,” said Boughner, reflecting on the season. “We went through a trade deadline, restocked the shelves. We got a guy like Barabanov. That was a positive. Being able to experience the (Patty) Marleau breaking the record was amazing. There were a lot of good things that happened along the way. I thought that our dressing room is a better room than it was in training camp. This is a good learning experience for everyone.”

A’s beat Red Sox 4-1 gives James Kaprielian his first Major League victory

Oakland A’s starter James Kaprielian pitches to the Boston Red Sox line up in the first inning at Fenway Park in Boston Wed May 12, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Oakland A’s (23-15) sent James Kaprielian to the Hill Wednesday night to face the Boston Red Sox (22-16). Kaprielian was making his first Major League start. The young man from Southern California had his family in attendance, and he had to have some butterflies in his stomach at the start of the game.

The Red Sox welcomed him by scoring a run in the first inning. Kaprielian worked his way out of a jam and threw about 30 pitches in the frame. He settled down and kept the Red Sox off the board the next four innings. The A’s offense put four unanswered runs on the board, and James won his first game in the big leagues.

The Red Sox drew first blood in the bottom of the first. Marwyn Gonzalez, who loves to hit against the A’s, got things going with a double to right field. Kaprielian walked Alex Verdugo and gave up a single to J.D. Martinez. The Red Sox had the bases loaded with no out and the chance for a big inning. Kaprielian retired the next two hitters. He walked Christian Vasquez to force in a run. Hunter Renfroe struck out to end the inning. Boston led 1-0 after one inning of play.

The A’s tied the game in the top of the fourth. With two out, Stephen Piscotty singled. Sean Murphy doubled to drive in Piscotty. The A’s scored two more in the top of the fifth. Mitch Moreland singled to start the rally. A’s shortstop Elvis Andrus doubled to center to send Moreland to third.

Jed Lowrie grounded out 6-3. Moreland scored on the play, Andrus advanced to third. Andrus scored when Eduardo Rodriguez committed a balk. The A’s led 3-1 midway through the fifth inning. Oakland added a run in the top of the seventh when Matt Olson blasted his eighth of the year.

A’s manager Bob Melvin turned the pitching chores over to his bullpen after the fifth inning. Burch Smith pitched two perfect innings. With Lou Trivino pitching in the eighth, the Red Sox mounted a threat. With one out and men on at second and third, Red Sox catcher Christian Vasquez grounded out to Lowrie who threw to Olson.

Xander Bogaerts committed a baserunning blunder as he tried to score from third on the play. A’s first baseman, Matt Olson, threw home to nail Bogaerts trying to score. The A’s led 4-1 after eight complete.

The A’s summoned lefty Jake Diekman from the bullpen to close out the game in the ninth. Jake retired the Red Sox 1-2-3 to preserve the win for Kaprielian.

Game Notes: With the win, the A’s are now 23-15 for the year. The Red Sox are 22-16.

Kaprielian worked five innings and allowed one run and four hits. He struck out six and walked three. Kaprielian’s father was in attendance to watch his son start his first game in the Majors. The A’s acquired James in a trade with the Yankees in 2017. The trade sent Sonny Gray to New York. The Yankees picked Kaprielian in the first round of the 2016 draft. Kaprielian missed two years of playing time due to arm injuries.

The A’s will be attempting to sweep the Red Sox on Thursday. The A’s pitching shut down the vaunted Boston offense allowing them three runs in the first two games of the series.

The A’s will send Sean Manaea to the hill on Thursday. Manaea was outstanding in his last performance. Garrett Richards will pitch for Boston.

The game will start at 4:10 pm on Thursday.

Giants day off report: Giants open four game series in Pittsburgh Thursday night

By Jessica Kwong

The San Francisco Giants enjoyed a day off on Wednesday after a 4-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday to sweep the two-game series and safeguard their spot at the top of the NL West. They now lead the San Diego Padres by two games and the Los Angeles Dodgers by three games.

Holding a 22-14 record, the Giants are tied at the most wins with the St. Louis Cardinals, Oakland A’s and Boston Red Sox. San Francisco and St. Louis, with a .611 win percentage, are the best in the league.

The Giants are on the road to face the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds before returning to Oracle Park to host the defending champion Dodgers. First pitch for Thursday’s game at PNC Park is at 3:35 p.m.

On Tuesday, Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi spoke about the MLB trade deadline more than two months away, in light of how well the team is doing now. Zaidi said that last year the organization talked quite a bit about adding a left-handed bat which could have been the difference. The Giants ended up finishing last season a pitch away from making the playoffs.

“A lot of the best pieces in July are if you add a complementary piece that really addresses an area of need and can really clean up the roster. We’ll be looking at all those things,” Zaidi said on KNBR’s “Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks” show.

“It’s really early and I don’t see ourselves positioning as a buyer or a seller, but we’re in this to be competitive,” he continued. “You like to reward a clubhouse and a group that’s playing well like the way our guys are right now.”

The Giants spent much of Tuesday also celebrating a home run by right fielder Drew Robinson in their Triple-A affiliate Sacramento River Cats. Robinson’s solo homer in the top of the second inning was cheered across the minor and major leagues because it was his first since he lost an eye in an attempted suicide in April 2020.
