That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News and Commentary: A’s-Angels one run games keeping things interesting; Astros expected to be the top team in the A.L. West

OAKLAND–Let’s see how the A’s can play as a cohesive unit because your competing in a very tough division you have the Astros with Jose Altuve and Carlos Carrea. The Astros who can do a lot of damage with players like George Springer, Nori Aoki, and Carlos Beltran. There are future MVPs on the Astros who have batting titles like Altuve who has two titles under his belt. Then you have the Texas Rangers that won the division and are loaded with talent.

For the A’s they aren’t expected to compete but they like to beat the underdog and right now their playing competitive baseball with the Angels through the first two games. There in a situation that one expects them to do much and the national media are expecting the A’s to be another last place team. The Angels have Albert Pujols and Mike Trout and look forward to break out year.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Dave Kaval is the right man at the right time in A’s history

csnbayarea.com photo: Oakland A’s team president David Kaval

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

OAKLAND– As a veteran working in baseball I have seen plenty. From the late mid to late 1970’s when Mr Charlie O Finley told me “Yes Amaury you can broadcast in Mexican”, until now. Obviously Charlie forgot it was Spanish. Mexican is not a language, is a nationality. Plus, even if Mexican was a language I would not understand it, since I was born in Cuba. But that is how I’ve got my start and I have been fortunate to see this franchise through the good and the bad years. It is called history.

A new era for Oakland Athletics baseball was launched when Mr Dave Kaval was introduced as new President of the Oakland Athletics. His primary mission is to build a new ballpark for the Athletics inside the Oakland city limits. He has admitted that is his main focus. The Athletics need a new park and a new look. Since he took the job as President, he has named the Oakland Coliseum Rickey Henderson Field, has renovated areas inside the Coliseum, make it much more fan-friendly, and then we have heard some of the great players of the A’s during the glory years of the team in the 1980’s like Dave Stewart, Jose Canseco getting involved, Dennis Eckersley is now a special assistant to Mr Kaval.

Why not retire Dagoberto(Campy)Campaneris #19? he was a great shortstop during the three-consecutive World Championship titles in 1972 to 1974. And when you have great and popular players like Yoenis Cespedes and Josh Donaldson(a few years back) you must keep them. It is part of the business of baseball, keeping your star players, and the fans involved with their local heroes.

“Rooted in Oakland”is a good way to start. Since they moved from Kansas City in 1968 they won four World Championships here, for those that are counting that is one more than the San Francisco Giants. Plus while in Philadelphia (where the A’s were born back in 1901) they won five more championships for a total of nine World Series titles, Yankees 27, Cardinals 11, Athletics 9. The New York Yankees have won 40 American League titles, the most in the league’s history, followed by the Philadelphia/Kansas City/Oakland Athletics(15) and the Boston Red Sox 13.

The history of this franchise is great. In the early years, the A’s established themselves as one of the dominant teams in the new league, winning the A.L. pennant six times (1902, 1905, 1910, 1911, 1913 and 1914), and winning the World Series in 1910, 1911 and 1913. They moved from Kansas City to Oakland in 1968 and four years later they started a dynasty, winning three consecutive World Series. Then came the Haas(Levi Strauss)ownership in the 1980’s, and they were one of the most dominant teams.

It seems to me that Mr Dave Kaval is the right man at the right time in history for this Athletics franchise. His approach as a populist (I might say)mingling with the fans and taking suggestions an affable executive with a vision for this franchise. And that is all good. Baseball is a game to be enjoyed by the fans, yes television and radio rights, merchandise and marketing are all good and part of the business, but no player like to play in an empty stadium.

There are four (4) locations the new President is looking at for the construction of a new stadium. Howard terminal, Lake Merritt, Jack London Square and the current Oakland Coliseum. When I first met and spoke with Mr Kaval was during the Oakland Athletics Fanfest(which by the way returned to Jack London Square this year)and my simple suggestion –this was many weeks before the Raiders announced their move to Las Vegas, was the Oakland Coliseum.

There are few baseball facilities in the country more accessible that the Oakland Coliseum., We have one of the Bay Area main arteries, Highway 880 to the West and BART to the East. The main problem is that there is not much of a village there, they need restaurants, theaters, more entertainment build around there. Why not blow the Coliseum and build a new park right there? 41.000 seats right there in the heart of the Bay Area. I am not opposed to the other three locations, but I believe the current location might be the best. Of course, during the construction there(at the Coliseum site) the A’s would have to play someplace else for a couple of seasons. That, as I see it is the biggest negative. While in the other locations they could begin building as the A’s still would play at the Coliseum, until is time to move to the new park.

Plus, I believe that if you build it right there at the Coliseum, there will be less opposition from environmentalist and other groups that will always opposed a sports facility.

All I have seen from the new Oakland Athletics President is positive and headed in the right direction. This franchise needed this and now I believe they are in good hands with Mr Dave Kaval. It won’t be easy to build a new ballpark, we who lived in the Bay Area most of our lives now that, this is not Kansas City or Cincinnati, but I trust that Mr Kaval will reach his objective.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, and Commentary: City of Oakland and Mayor Schaaf will take a huge hit over loss of Raiders

USA Today photo: Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf who addressed the media and Oakland Raider Nation said that her heart aches for Raider Nation today

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

OAKLAND–In a way it’s not a surprise for all of us who’ve been following this story as Oakland now loses it’s second major league team the Oakland Raiders. The Golden State Warriors are the first to leave and who will have a new arena built in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood and will be leaving Oakland in two years. The NFL voted today 31-1 to move the team from the city with the Miami the only vote dissenting. Today it’s official the Raiders are headed to Las Vegas this is something that Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf confirmed after she had raised $750 million in private money to save the team but Raiders owner Mark Davis and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said they are committed to Las Vegas. The Raiders and the NFL confirmed that the team’s last season in Oakland will be 2019.

Here is a statement that Schaaf  released to the media regarding the Raiders leaving Oakland:

” I am disappointed that the Raiders and the NFL chose Las Vegas over Oakland when we had a fully-financed, shovel-ready stadium project that would have kept the Raiders in Oakland where they were born and raised.”

“I am proud that we stood firm in refusing to use public money to subsidize stadium construction and that we did not capitulate to their unreasonable and unnecessary demand.

“As a lifelong Oaklander, my heart aches today for the Raider Nation. These are the most committed and passionate fans any city or team could hope to have. They deserved better.”

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: USA…USA…USA…Americans go all the way in the World Baseball Classic

The U.S. team celebrates an 8-0 win over Puerto Rico in the final of the World Baseball Classic in Los Angeles, Wednesday, March 22, 2017. (AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

LOS ANGELES–Marcus Stroman pitched one of his better games at any level, dominating Puerto Rico to give that small but traditional in baseball island it’s first defeat of the 2017 tournament by a solid score of 8-0. Stroman, whose mother is Puerto Rican, could have chosen to play for that team, but the Toronto Blue Jays starter chose to play for the USA. Stroman claimed that his mother was harassed over social media for his decision.

Why was it so important for the American team to win it’s first World Baseball Classic tournament? Among the reasons is that the WBC is a son of Major League Baseball, under Fred Manfred, Commissioner with the mission to spread baseball to as many countries as possible. Baseball, unlike Soccer (Fútbol )is an American sport. For the American public to get involved in anything it has to be a winner, it is represents the country, even more. The WBC is still a young tournament. It began in 2006 with Japan taking the title, then in 2009, Japan won it again, Dominican Republic took it in 2013, and now come the Americans this year 2017.

The World Baseball Classic will never be like the World Cup of Fútbol/Soccer, simply that sport is played by most of the world. The WBC is trying to emulate the World Cup of Soccer in it;s presentation, the television music, with the International flavor, all the colors in the world and all the hoopla. Americans were not really interested in this classic, but now they have won it for the first time. Like colorful General Patton once said: “Americans play to win at all times”, or President Donald J. Trump during the campaign: “We do not win anymore”. It is part of the American attitude to win, and in baseball which is still considered by most historians as “America’s pastime”it is even more important.

Over 51,000 crowded Dodger Stadium for the final game of the 2017 World Baseball Classic. The United States of America dominated Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico had been discussed as a potential 51st state of the USA In a 2012 status referendum a majority of voters, 54%, expressed dissatisfaction with the current political relationship) of course this victory has nothing do to regarding politics between both countries but when it comes to bragging rights for both sides is a big deal.

This tournament had many controversies, some on the field, by strange decisions, others pout of the filed like when Yadier Molina and other players complained of lack of security while playing in Mexico, where some of the Puerto Rico’s player’s families were not really protected. The WBC still young but it needs to learn that when you play any sport around the world, things are different, than when you play here in the homeland.

Congratulations to manager Jim Leyland, a very emotional USA manager who said after the game this was for all in the US but mostly for those serving the country, Marcus Stroman won the MVP of the tournament, but Adam Jones, Eric Hosmer or Brandon Crawford also played to win it, as well as the rest of the American team. Both teams Puerto Rico and the United States showed a lot of good sportsmanship as they shook hands and hugged each other after the game ended, and now most of them are on the way to their respective teams in Spring Training in Arizona and Florida.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News and Commentary: A’s spring training camp at Mesa and the players are gearing up for the season

MESA AZ–There is no better sight than to walk into the ball park after the winter off and to see the players stretch and prepare for their next exhibition game at Hohokam Park the spring home of the Oakland A’s. A’s manager Bob Melvin will be my pre game guest for today’s column later on, it’s a wonderful, wonderful time at spring training in March. I’ve been to a couple of games the Angels and A’s and the sold out Cubs and Angels which was played a couple days ago that game was played at Diablo Stadium in Tempe it was a sold out crowd.

Wednesday I’m going to see the Angels and Giants at Scottsdale and every place you go for spring training and I’ve been coming here for over 30 years. Every place you go now you can expect a sell out crowd. It’s pretty amazing what Major League Baseball has been able to do here in the Phoenix area when you have half of the teams training here it’s just a wonderful experience.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, & Commentary: Raiders secure funds for LV stadium; ESPN cutting budget and air talent; plus A’s pitcher Santiago Casillia

reviewjournal.com photo: Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis has his game face on as he walks by Las Vegas hopeful fans who have their smiling faces on as Davis builds momentum in moving the Raiders to Vegas

It looks like the Oakland Raiders determination to get out of Oakland will be solidified after coming to an agreement with Bank Of America that will cover the team’s stadium costs at the tune of $1.9 billion. The previous investors Sheldon Adelson and Goldman Sachs sacked the Raiders after promising to be investors for the team’s new Las Vegas Stadium. Both Sachs and Adelson backed out after they learned that neither would have any ownership stake in the football club.

Disney who runs a tight financial ship will be cutting ESPN’s budget as the network said that they would trim $250 millio which includes cutting air talent. Which on air personalities was not made public by ESPN but at that dollar figure the network will be trimming many positions and those who worked at the network for years will see those changes starting this month. Veteran Sunday Night Football host and Baseball anchor of highlights Chris Berman’s contract will not be renewed and is on the way out at the Worldwide Sports Leader.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News and Commentary: Cubs are picked to win it all again

Chicago Cubs’ Kyle Schwarber hits a single during a spring training baseball game Monday, Feb. 27, 2017, in Mesa, Ariz. (AP Photo/Morry Gash)

Looking around spring training the Chicago Cubs whose long drought of a World Series victory ended with a win over Cleveland. This is one of the greatest sports stories of my lifetime and most people’s lifetime that was 120 years in the waiting. It’s a great story and I’m glad the Cubs won it. The Cubs were favorites to win the World Series last season and are favorites to win it again.

The Cubs have terrific talent there one of the stories is what are they going to do with Kyle Schwarber and the Cubs have a lot of talent and the Cubs lost reliever Aroldis Chapman who went to the Yankees and the Cubs still have a formidable line up. The Cubs are just a great team and they should be fun. They got Wade Davis a closer from Kansas City and Schwarber wants to catch.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, and Commentary: Davis staying on the caution of health declines invitation to World Baseball Classic

In this Sept. 15, 2016, file photo, Oakland Athletics’ Khris Davis hits a two-run double off Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Edinson Volquez during the fourth inning of a baseball game at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. Davis has asked an arbitration panel for a $5 million salary this season, and the Oakland Athletics argued the outfielder should be paid $4.65 million. The sides appeared Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017, before arbitrators Mark Irvings, Gil Vernon, Mark Burstein, who are expected to issue their decision Wednesday. (AP Photo/Orlin Wagner, File)

The Oakland A’s Khris Davis who this past week took a pass on playing in the World Baseball Classic and who hit 40 home runs for the A’s last season and this is exactly what I was talking about in our last podcast. A lot of Major League players wouldn’t find it inconvenient playing in the WBC they all feel very proud that their representing their country. When you get paid a lot of money and you know you have to produce and I understand what Davis is saying.

Davis told me mid season he was trying to qualify for the Mexican team because his mother was born in Mexico. I feel bad he’s going to miss out, America’s team is going to have the Giants Buster Posey and Brandon Crawford Crawford and Posey will participate. For Davis he won’t be able to join the Mexican team and one of the reasons is he went to arbitration he won a lot of money in arbitration and he wants to loyal to the A’s.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, and Commentary: Kaval considered face of the A’s; open door policy; names Coliseum after Rickey; plus the latest with the Giants

FILE – In this Nov. 17, 2016, file photo, Oakland Athletics President David Kaval gestures during a news conference in Oakland, Calif. TheAthletics will be phased out of revenue sharing in the coming years as part of baseball’s new labor deal, and that puts even more urgency on the small-budget franchise’s plan to find the right spot soon to build a new, privately funded ballpark. Kaval, named to his new A’s leadership position last month, is committed to making quick progress but also doing this right. That means strong communication with city and civic leaders as well as the community and fan base. (AP Photo/Ben Margot, File)

David Kaval is basically the new president for the Oakland A’s and he’s the new face for the A’s and also manager Bob Melvin, Kaval is a young guy in his early 40s he worked to build a new stadium for the MLS San Jose Earthquakes. It’s a beautiful park located next to San Jose International Airport. Kaval’s main mission with the Oakland A’s he told me is to build a new park some place in Oakland. Kaval will accomplish that, the A’s have been talking to the civic leaders.

Oakland won’t have to worry about the Warriors their going to be leaving for San Francisco. The Raiders who knows where their going to be playing. The A’s have to carve their own future and it’s going to be in Oakland but he’s the face of the franchise right now although he’s the president and Billy Beane is the general manager who oversees all the trades. Lew Wolf whose still part owner stepped down from being the managing partner.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Cuba in this World Baseball Classic -Kind of a mystery.

AP file photo: Oakland Athletics’ Yonder Alonso who represented Cuba in 2009 warms up before a baseball game against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif., Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016. (AP file Photo/Alex Gallardo)

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

Cuba’s best WBC was in 2006, when they reached the championship game, losing to Japan,10-6. It was Japan again who eliminated Cuba in the next Classic in 2009 in Round 2 of the tournament. Last Classic, 2013, the Cubans reached the second round and lost to the Netherlands. This 2017 World Baseball Classic which begins March 6, Cuba’s team is one of those “mystery “teams.

Cuba does not allows defectors to play in the WBC, It happens to be that Major League Cuban-born players today are defectors; Yoenis Cespedes(Mets)who played for Cuba in 2009 (before defecting)will not be able to play, as well as Jose Abreu,(White Sox), Aroldis Chapman,(Yankees) Rusney Castillo and Roenis Elias (Red Sox), Yonder Alonso (Athletics), Yasiel Puig(Dodgers), Leonys Martin and Guillermo Heredia(Mariners),Adonis Garcia(Braves), Yasmany Torres(Diamondbacks)and there are many more.

These Cuban-born players in the major leagues could probably fill a roster, but they are not allowed. Maybe Cuba should consider to change that in the future. It will show good faith on behalf of their government, who still does not allows any real freedom to its citizens. Eventually something will change, and the odds are that it is Cuba that has to chance first, since the major leagues is the place where the overwhelming majority of baseball players wish to play someday. Some of these Cuban-born players have residence in countries outside Cuba, some even are US citizens, or legal residents of the United States of America, yet they cannot represent the country they were born, because they defected. I am sure that Major League Baseball could work with Cuba’s Baseball Organizations to come to a resolution and allowed these players to represent their country. So far the government of Cuba if saying “no”.

On this 2017 Cuban team, one interesting story will be Yoelkis Cespedes, younger half-brother of Yoenis Cespedes, he is 19 years old and considered a five tool talent. Also Alfredo Despaigne and Frederick Cepeda are known for previous Classics. But those are in the minority, since this Cuban team is almost 100 percent made up of players that are well known in Cuba, and there is not much scouting around to tell us what do they really have. I have not seem the majority of them but reports are that this could be the “next crop “of talented Cuban players, and some of them could be of major league caliber.

Interest in Cuba for anything that has to do with baseball is huge, and they will be following this classic via radio and television in the largest island of the Caribbean. Before this World Baseball Classic and even before the first Caribbean World Series in 1949, which Cuba hosted in Havana and won it with a 6-0 record, Cuba has been the pioneer when it comes to baseball in Latin America.
