That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, & Commentary: Brady jersey could be worth a million; Romo will be a plus for LA bullpen; As far as 49ers coaches go Shanahan hopes to stick around

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady throws a pass in action against the Atlanta Falcons during the NFL Super Bowl LI football game on Sunday, Feb. 05, 2017 in Houston. The Patriots defeated the Falcons 34-28 in overtime. (G. Newman Lowrance via AP)

Souvenirs are becoming priceless when I was a kid there was the Baltimore Colts Johnny Unitas when I came to the US in the 60s I was a fan of the Colts back then no telling what a old Unitas jersey is worth today. What New England quarterback Tom Brady has done is incredible he’s been in seven Super Bowls and he’s won five. The value of anything that has anything to do with Brady that jersey his fifth Super Bowl victory jersey is worth a few million dollars. Now the Texas Rangers are looking high and low for that missing jersey and are hoping someone would turn it over with no questions asked.

Former San Francisco Giants reliever Sergio Romo is filling a need that the Los Angeles Dodgers were looking for in their bullpen. Romo is very happy he’s pitching for the Mexican team in the World Baseball Classic next month. He’s happy with what he’s doing he’s still in the Big Leagues. He now joins the Dodgers he joins a great organization. The Dodgers sellout after sellout they draw over four million fans in a season.

Kyle Shanahan who signed on with the 49ers as head coach for the next six years. This six year deal is very unusual for somebody in that position but that’s what he got. The 49ers have been awful the last couple of years and there’s been a lot of turmoil and we talked on this show not too long ago about all the players who get into trouble and get arrested on this team and in addition 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick didn’t have a good season and then the last two coaches Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly were let go after one season. It’s everyone’s hope that Shanahan can stay on at least two to three years and have some success on the job.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Baseball and Social Media are imcompatible

Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred speaks during a news conference following a meeting with MLB owners, Friday, Feb. 3, 2017, in Palm Beach, Fla. (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky)

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

OAKLAND–For those of us that were raised where paradise was watching a baseball game on a slow-sunny Sunday afternoon, scoring with the game program, eating peanuts and hot dogs, and drinking a soda, it would be a travesty for somebody to scream, “let’s go, this is too slow!”.

Let’s comeback to the present(2017)

Commissioner Manfred is addressing the pace of baseball today. The game is too slow for today,(some say) so they’re trying to “speed it up”. Miami Marlins president David Samson said Major League Baseball is aware that despite much talk about the need to speed up the game in recent years, the problem has gotten worse. “Pace of the game is critical “Samson said “We know that from our fans and TV partners. We have to recognize the reality of life today, which is that attention spans are going down and choices are going up. Whatever business you’re in, you have to adjust”.

If you attend baseball games or if you cover them in the media, you are used to seeing people pulling out their cell phones and filming or taking photos, during the game. Even worse, some people come to the baseball game to talk over the phone, the game is secondary to them. Some people cannot take the pace of the game, not because the game is slow, but because they seem not to have any time for relaxing, leisure time is not on their agenda. And let’s face it; there is a big addiction to social media in our country. More people at baseball parks are getting hit by balls and bats, just because they’re not watching the game and their hands and fingers are not ready to catch the ball because they are busy texting. Ask your eye doctor how difficult is to focus your eyes from texting, to a live ball coming at 80 mph at your head. The ball gets there in a split second. Faster than you can sent an emoji.

Baseball is totally different. It is a game, and just like chess, you cannot make a move every two seconds, if it ever became that, it would not be baseball. It is a slippery slope for baseball to cut the time for this and cut the time for that, and tell the hitter to rush up to the plate and the pitching coach to run up to the mound to talk to his pitcher. I don’t think they will eliminate the umpires “yet”. We do not see arguments that go on very long anymore, but eventually umpires will be a thing of the past. Someday (sooner than you think) we will have a computer on each base making the call,it would be so small that could be inside the bag, so nobody could see it. The rhythm of baseball is unlike any other sport, and I believe that is much of its charm. When I first started to watch the game of baseball as a little kid it was my father who thought me and took me to the old Cuban Professional Winter League games in Havana. I would ask a lot of questions, and he will try to explain, but always told me, watch the game, watch the game and the more you see it the more you will understand it and enjoy it. The more I watched baseball the more in-love I became with the game. when my father told me “this guy is a good hitter, he is going to try to advance the guy at first, and hit behind him”I did not have Google to tell me “what the hell is hitting behind the runner”? So I learned, because one thing baseball teaches more than any other sport is patience.

Of course in the mid to late 1950’s the biggest technology we had in our house in Havana, was a Hallicrafter television(Hallicrafter,a radio manufacturer, later made televisions and then that company became Sylvania). Back them they televised a game of the Cuban league each week. However, we preferred going to Estadio de El Cerro(now Estadio Latinoamericano, because the Castro’s changed every name of everything in Cuba). But one thing the government there could not change, was “beisbol”. Not even the communist could speed the game! In a country which government blames the US for everything bad under the sun, for over 50 years, baseball in Cuba remained the same. Until a couple of decades ago when they established the Designated Hitter,(sorry NL fans) that has been the only major change there, when it comes to baseball. Even with the old Soviet Union influence in Cuba, Cubans never really took up to Soccer/Futbol. Baseball was, is and will be “the game “for Cubans.

The main reason Major League Baseball is looking to the pace of the game today is basically because of economic reasons. Although the game today is as wealthy as ever. We have hundreds of channels today on television, radio still the place where baseball really can find refuge from high technology, and way too much information. Do we have too much information? Common sense tells me that if a hitter squares a fastball coming at 98 mph, that ball with leave the bat at way over 100 mph. Yet on television that is another added feature, to keep people involved in the game. For the millenniums baseball might be too slow, and they would probably like to see the game reduced to three periods of three innings each,(no more than 10 minutes for each inning) and read about the game via Twitter with 147 characters. That’s it. They would say, “No more time for that, I have to do something else”. And of course, extra-innings would be abolished. Some would say “just end the game with a tie”,we have to go… Newspapers will soon be museum items, just like the old Olivetti,Underwood and Remington typewriters.

I love technology, although I do not do Twitter, I enjoy all the advances of today’s social media. I am in no way against social media, I enjoy just about every advance in technology, except for the cars that do not need a driver. However, it is more and more evident that while social media seems to be perfect for many things, it is not for baseball, if you are a purist, It can’t be.

I do believe Major League Baseball is trying to marry social media to the game, and more important – compete with the other sports that are restricted by the clock, but I am also not in favor of changing the game that much. It might just be that Baseball and Social Media are incompatible. We will see, but it could be a very rocky marriage.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Minorities in Baseball: Players, Management and Owners

13 October 2016: Washington Nationals manager Dusty Baker (12) walks through the photo well prior to the start of the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. Amaury Pi-Gonzalez

OAKLAND–With the World Baseball Classic beginning this March, baseball has become much more international than ever before. Below are some fact/numbers of minorities in the major leagues as of today. As of 2016, the United States of American has a population of 323 million people, of which 18 percent are Latino or Hispanic-Americans, and 13 percent African-American and 5.6 percent Asian-American.

There are only 8 percent of African-American players in major league baseball and at this time only two managers, Dusty Baker of the Washington Nationals. Dave Roberts(Manager of the Year in the National League 2016)Los Angeles Dodgers, who was born in Japan, and is African-American, and Asian, There are no African-American general managers among MLB 30 teams at this time.

Latino players are 30 percent of all major league baseball players, however, there is no Latino/Hispanic manager born in Latin America at the present time. One manager is of Hispanic heritage, born in Los Angeles, Rick Renteria, manager of the Chicago White Sox. Plus 1.2 percent of players are Asian or of Asian descent. The high point for most minority managers was a total of 10 managers, in 2002 and 2009.

General Managers: Al Avila, Detroit Tigers. His father, Cuban-born Ralph Avila was the vice president of the Los Angeles Dodgers and currently scouting advisor for the Dodgers. His son Alex Avila is a catcher for the Detroit Tigers. Jeff Luhnow General Manager of the Houston Astros was born and raised in Mexico.

Owners: Linda G. Alvarado. On 1992 Alvarado made history as the first Latino(male or female) owner of a Major League Baseball team, the Colorado Rockies. This also marked the first time a woman was in a bid for ownership of a major league fanchise. Today she is co-owner of the Colorado Rockies. Arturo(Arte)Moreno sole owner of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Arturo”Arte”Moreno became the first American of Hispanic Heritage(Mexican-American)to own a major sports team in the United States when he purchased the Anaheim Angels baseball team from the Walt Disney Company.

In conclusion: Major League Baseball under Commissioner Fred Manfred has addressed the issue of why African-American participation in baseball has been declining, there are many explanations(but I leave that to people who study and know sociology, culture trends and such) what we know is that in Latin American baseball countries, Cuba, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Jamaica, Aruba and other islands in the Caribbean baseball is played year ’round, few play football(NFL type)and some play basketball, but most do not come close to the level of the NBA. So aside from soccer(futbol)in Latin America, baseball is the most popular sport as far as participation and organized leagues. While in Asia, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan have developed players of Major League caliber. Australia is also a country that plays baseball and organized leagues.

Umpires: At the end of the 2016 season. Lazlo(Laz)Diaz born in Miami, Alfonso Marquez, Zacatecas,Mexico,Angel Hernandez, La Habana, Cuba, Manuel(Manny)Gonzalez,Caracas,Veneuzel

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Vin Scully receives the first Vin Scully Lifetime Achievement Award by the SCSB

BURBANK– January 30, 2017. On a beautiful day at the historic Lakeside Golf Country Club, the SCSB (Southern California Sports Broadcasters) Vin Scully was the man of the hour. The SCSB was founded in 1958, the first year the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles with Vin Scully at the mic. This private golf club where the initiation fee is around $85K, is adjacent to Warner Brother’s studios and by the pristine Toluca Lake. This was my first time at this annual event, as I was nominated for the category of Foreign Language Sports play by play (Sportscaster of the Year) for the Los Angeles area. A new category the SCSB began three years ago.

The Guess Entertainer was Tom Dressen, one of the biggest names in show business. The comedian was Frank Sinatra opening act for 14 years, and also has appeared in marquees with Sammy David Jr, Liza Minelli, Smokey Robinson and Natalie Cole, among others. He entertained the crowd of approximately 300 media executives, broadcasters and personalities with a very nice comedy stand up routine.

Vin Scully seemed very emotional as he spoke on his 67 years career, and was very humble. The Legends Award was given to Ed Arnold, a radio man for 32 years in the broadcasting business, including 20 years operating his own company, Gillis Broadcasting Representatives, in Beverly Hills.

Truly enjoyed this first visit to this distinguished event hosted by the SCSB as I recently became an active broadcaster member. The history of this Lakeside Country Club is legendary. Numerous movie stars with memberships are associated with this Club, have included W.C Fields, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra. Some of them used to lived around the corner in Toluca Lake, where there still a community of people in today’s cinematography industry.

Recently elected President of the SCSB Chris Reverts told me this was one of their best events, as he took over from Joe Cala. Tommy Lasorda was next to Vin Scully on the honoree’s table. But the afternoon was dominated by Mr. Vin Scully. Although the Baseball Hall of Fame annually honors a broadcaster and a writer for their lifetime achievement, it’s been suggested that Major League Baseball could also recognize someone each year for their contributions to the craft of storytelling, and there was nobody better than the man from Fordham University (Class of 1949), who last year was given the Medal of Freedom by the President of the United States.

OAKLAND–The Oakland Athletics Spanish radio flagship station KIQI 1010AM radio San Francisco, has the unique distinction of having Manolo Hernandez-Douen as analyst on the air once again for all home games, and this year he is the President of the bay area chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Founded in 1908, today there are more than 700 active members working for newspapers, magazines and major websites, they have also been authorized by the National Baseball Hall of Fame to serve as the body that elects former player for enshrinement. This would be the eighth season for Manolo on the Oakland A’s Spanish radio network. The hardest working baseball writer I know, who I am proud to have called my friend for 30 years. Ironically when I first met Manolo it was not during a baseball game but during an NBA game in Los Angeles,in the 1990’s, as I was doing Spanish play by play of the Golden State Warriors and he was covering for the Spanish daily La Opinion. He was also editor for El Nuevo Heraldo in Miami, largest Spanish daily newspaper in Southern Florida. He currently writes for lasmayores.com

a site similar to mlb.com, but with original context 100% in Spanish language.

Felicidades Manolo!

Topps Baseball card photo: Former San Francisco Giant third baseman Matt Williams will be honored into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame

On the podcast with Amaury:

The Warriors won in a wipeout over the Cleveland Cavaliers 126-91 on Monday at Oracle Arena in Oakland. Was this game a matter of the Cavs taking the night off? Too many injuries? The Warriors double teaming LeBron? One thing for sure the W’s had Stephen Curry going with the hot hand who ended up scoring 35 points which made a lot up for the difference.

Our international baseball correspondent Lewis Rubman is covering the 2017 World Baseball Classic and Amaury goes over what impresses the most about this international tournament of MLB stars.

Former San Francisco Giant third baseman Matt Williams will be returning to the Bay Area to be honored at the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. Williams who also played for the Arizona Diamondbacks then later managed for the Diamondbacks and announced for them and then managed for the Washington Nationals will be remembered for his slugging ability on the 1987 Giants team that won the west that year.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Chicago Cubs visit the White House for the first time

channelnewsasia.com photo: President Obama holds a number 44 Chicago Cubs home jersey (he’s the 44th president) with the Chicago Cubs at the White House honoring the Cubs first World Championship since 1908

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

The Chicago Cubs, who won their first World Series in 108 years. visited the White House during President Obama’s last week as President of the United States. Theo Epstein, Cubs President of baseball operations offered Obama a pardon (the President is a big fan of the other Chicago club and the White Sox)and being from the south side of Chicago, the President appreciated the pardon in front of the north siders. Obama was presented with a home and road jersey, a No.44 from the Wrigley Field scoreboard a huge “W”flag autographed by the team, and a lifetime pass to Wrigley Field. Cubs board member Laura Rickets gave the pass to the president.

Seems that baseball and politics are embeded in Cubs world, a couple of weeks ago President-elect Donald Trump named Cubs owner Todd Rickets to his new cabinet as Deputy Secretary of Commerce.

“I’ve made a lot of promises,”Obama said. “Even I was not crazy enough to suggest that during these eight years we’d see the Cubs win a World Series”. While Theo Espstein said “This was a thrill for all of us”. Present were all the players, including Dexter Fowler who is now a Cardinal and Aroldis Chapman, who is back with the New York Yankees. Mike Rizzo, the popular first baseman of the champs said “I think the best part was the president talking about how sports brings people together” and “No matter what’s going on in this country and the world three or four hours of one game can rally so many people together. That was pretty meaningful”.

From what I have been able to find, it was Calvin Coolidge who invited the Washington Senators to the White House in 1925 after they won the World Series in 1924. Coolidge was the first President to invite a World Series champion to the White House. Yes, when it comes to winning, for the Chicago Cubs is always the first time.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Will the Raiders be like the Chargers?

Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio, right, stands with Raiders owner Mark Davis, left, before an NFL football game against the Denver Broncos, Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, in Denver. (AP Photo/Joe Mahoney)

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

OAKLAND–The San Diego Chargers are moving to Los Angeles after playing in San Diego for 56 seasons. Now the City of San Diego will only have one professional team (of the main pro-leagues in the US, MLB,NFL,NBA, NHL) left in that city, the San Diego Padres of the National League. From 1967 to 1971 San Diego hosted the San Diego Rockets (now the Houston Rockets), and then from 1978 to 1984 the San Diego Clippers(now the Los Angeles Clippers). San Diego never had an National Hockey League franchise.

The history of picturesque San Diego, considered among cities over 1 million in population with the best weather in the country has become a place where teams go to play and then move up north to Los Angeles. Even the Chargers who are leaving San Diego for Los Angeles also played their first season in Los Angeles in 1961. As of the year 2015, San Diego has a population around 1.4 million people. Meanwhile Los Angeles metropolitan area is closing in 20 million people, truly the largest in the State of California with a total population of 39 million people. Now in La La Land, they have two of each. MLB: Dodgers and Angels, NBA: Lakers and Clippers, NFL Rams and Chargers and NHL Kings and Ducks.

After the Los Angeles area, the San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose Bay Area is the largest in population with close to 8 million inhabitants. There are a total of five teams(A’s, Giants, Raiders, Sharks and Warriors) among the four top professional leagues here in the Bay Area, and three of those still play in Oakland. Athletics, Raiders and Warriors. The Oakland teams together have won nine titles in the city of Oakland. But how long will Oakland be able to enjoy these three heralded franchises?

Warriors: Back in November 2016, a California court of appeals ruled in the franchise’s favor, upholding their environmental impact report, which allows the team to move ahead with construction of their new arena in San Francisco. So the Warriors have one leg in San Francisco, and the other leg is not far behind. They are Adios.

Raiders: Owner Mark Davis is close to making a decision about a possible move of the franchise, from Oakland to Las Vegas, Nevada. Davis has avoided much discussion with the City of Oakland, but he has yet heard from Oakland mayor Libby Schaff and Ronnie Lott’s group the Fortress Group with their land and plans for a new Raiders stadium in Oakland. I feel like Davis really wants to take his team to Sin City, they will be all alone there with no marketing competition from anybody else, plus what happens in Vegas stays there. A decision should come soon, but I will not be surprised if they also leave Oakland. They’re almost Adios.

That means the party is getting smaller at Oakland, and mayor Libby Schaff will have one to dance with, the Oakland Athletics.

Ironically for so many years we have heard about the Athletics leaving Oakland, but when all is said-and-done, at this time the Oakland Athletics might be the only professional franchise among the four big ones to stay put. The Athletics recently announced their new President, Mr. David Kaval, who is the point man for a new stadium. He has expertise in this topic since he lead the way for the construction of Avaya Stadium in San Jose, for the Earthquakes of Major League Soccer. So, if I was a betting man, -which I am not- the Oakland Athletics are the favorite franchise to stay in Oakland. Looks like their staying.

So, yes. In conclusion Oakland and San Diego may have something in common soon, only one franchise and both are in baseball.

Note: No disrespect to soccer/futbol the most popular sport in the world, but you might notice I did not included the San Jose Earthquakes among the top professional franchises in the Bay Area, because(in my opinion)the MLS doesn’t rival the other four in attendance or popularity or player talent. in the United States. Why? Simple, the best players in the world in their respective sports play in MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL. While the MLS is still an excellent league, the best soccer players in the world usually play in the European professional leagues.

For AP and NY Times reporter, BBWWAA member Murray Chass left his Major League Baseball Hall of Fame ballot blank in protest that the candidate running to get elected into the Hall of Fame were not HOF caliber players. Chass said they were good players but not worthy of the Hall of Fame thus leaving his ballot blank. There are people in the Hall, who work at the Hall, players who depended on votes, and members of the media who vote who want Chass out of the voting class for submitting the blank ballot.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Dodgers sign Jansen and Turner is next

AP file photo: Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner will sign a five year deal with LA is seen here swinging for the fences in a Sept 5th game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Dodgers Stadium
by Amaury Pi Gonzalez
LOS ANGELES–It has been just over a week since the San Francisco Giants signed closer Mark Melancon for $62 million for the next four seasons. Today, their rivals, Los Angeles Dodgers, who won the Western Division for the fourth consecutive year, signed their closer Kenley Jansen for the next five years for $80 million. The Dodgers are close to bringing back their third baseman Justin Turner, who should sign for  five years and $64 million.
The Dodgers (which the largest payroll in baseball, around $240 million), already signed lefty starter Rich Hill for three years and $48 million. Hill who started this past season with the Oakland Athletics and was traded to the Dodgers, had six starts for the Dodgers during the home stretch; with a 1.68 ERA in those six starts. Although he has been troubled by blisters, his revival continues and owns one of the best and most effective curve balls in the game.
Unless there is some movement with the possibility of trading controversial outfielder Yasiel Puig, the Dodgers would have the same team as in 2016 when they finishes with a 91-71 record, four games on top of the second place San Francisco Giants. The Dodgers however, expect to have their ace Clayton Kershaw healthy from Spring Training. Kershaw was injured and started only 21 games, finished with a record of 12-4 and 1.69 ERA.
There might also be some movement from the Giants side in the near future, free agents like Angel Pagan, Sergio Romo and others, could be traded. But what we are looking now between the Dodgers and the Giants are basically the rosters they will have to compete next season. Dodgers could trade veteran second baseman Chase Utley, although the Angels acquiring second baseman Danny Espinosa from the Washington Nationals for two prospects, reduces the chances of Utley leaving the Dodgers.
So the Giants addressed their main concern, when they got Mark Melancon, who should own the closer role, while manager Bruce Bochy and his coaching staff have to figure is the bridge from their bullpen to get to Melancon, and that could easily be determined during Spring Training.
In conclusion. 2017 looks like another year where the Giants and the Dodgers will battle it out for the division, again.
