Tuesday July 11th. It happened in Miami, Florida, where you can listen to at least 12 Spanish radio stations on your dial AM or FM at any given moment and all the Spanish television you can handle all the time. Hard to find a more Latin American city in the USA than Miami, that is where I first lived in 1961 when I left Cuba.

But as I remember back then, Miami didn’t have one team among the major three professional leagues, MLB,NFL or NBA. However, I did attended some of the old Miami Marlins (Florida State League) games and that was it. One year I was the bat boy and ball boy in some games for the Baltimore Orioles, who used to have Spring Training in Miami, at the old Miami Stadium. Back then High School football was the big sporting event in Dade County and of course the University of Miami Hurricanes, who played at the Orange Bowl.

I lived in that Orange Bowl neighborhood in NW Miami, not far from Miami’s Downtown. Later I moved to Miami Beach (South Beach) then a boring and quiet, mostly made of retired older folks from New York and New Jersey, today is Fiesta, most of the time. I remember telling a good friend, “we are in one of the most southern most cities in the USA, yet nobody speaks here with a southern accent”. It was more like a Brooklyn accent! My good friend Julio Lieberman (yes that was his name) who was Jewish, born in Argentina, explained the whole thing to me

Sunny Miami was an appropriate scenario for this year’s Midsummer Classic. I can easily remember the days when I would go to the Oakland Coliseum and Candlestick Park to do a couple of interviews with a certain Latino player. As I remember when a team back then (talking mid to late 1970’s) had a Latin player it was not a regular occurrence. When Boston visited I would talk with Luis Tiant, or with somebody like David Concepción of the Big Red Machine when Cincinnati visited the Giants at Candlestick Park.

It would be me and maybe another guy looking to do an interview with a Spanish speaking ballplayer. When Dodgers visited San Francisco, they always had Tommy Lasorda (first as coach then Manager) who would give me five good minutes of audio for an interview in Spanish (he played (p) in Cuba in the 1950’s in the Cuban Professional Winter Leagues). Tommy is not in very good health these days. I recently spoke with him briefly inside the Dodgers dressing room at Angel Stadium, Anaheim, during the Freeway Series.

Today, all you have to do is walk into any Major League Baseball dressing room and Spanish will be spoken by a bunch of players. Look at the Houston Astros, Springer, Beltran, Correa, Altuve, Gurriel or the Chicago White Sox, Abreu, Cabrera, Garcia, Narvaez, Sánchez. Infante, Quintana, Rodon.

This is at any Major League Baseball park in the American and National Leagues. Would I had ever even dreamed that MLB would send a directive to each team that they should hire an interpreter for Spanish speaking players? If I would have even suggested something like that(back then), my credentials could be in danger or removal.Inside some press boxes, if you spoke in Spanish you had to do it like wispering. And yes, I experienced discrimination, although I am not the type of guy that goes for the big ugly “D” word all the time. I have true stories about that.

Today,Hispanic/Latino players are taking over the game of baseball. While the African American participation in baseball has migrated to the NBA and the NFL,(why, I don’t know, but everybody has an opinion, I would leave that to Professor Harry Edwards who knows about social studies) it has not happened in baseball. MLB is trying, but African-American players are not really coming into the game. While the influx of Latino players keeps coming and coming and coming. Dominican,Venezuela, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Panamá, Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Curazao, Virgin Islands.

Not a surprise that Robinson Canó the great veteran second-baseman for the Seattle Mariners was the game Most Valuable Player, he from the Dominican Republic, decided the game with a homerun. Nelson Cruz, (Canó’s compatriot) and buddy with the Mariners took a selfie photo of him with home plate umpire Joe West, who has over 5,000 games as umpire in the bigs. And who took the photo/selfi, while Cruz was coming to the plate? Non other than St Louis Cardinals catcher and future Hall of Famer, Yadier Molina(Puerto Rico).

In Latin America the passion for baseball in the baseball-rich countries is as great as ever. If you watched the game on FOX you could easily see how much the Latino players were enjoying the game. That is healthy for the game to see people that enjoy playing with dedication and passion. Finally, I was not in Miami, I was on vacation this week out of town.

But,Yes, this 88th MLB All Star Game was a Latino Game.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News and Commentary: Clippers sending Chris Paul to Rockets; A’s could sell after identifying new stadium site in Oakland

LOS ANGELES–There’s a lot of changes going at the Los Angeles Clippers with Blake Griffin leaving the team and now Chris Paul moving onto the Houston Rockets as announced by the Clippers on Wednesday morning. Who would have thought the Clippers would be an interesting franchise and they were with Griffin and Paul.

For so many years the Lakers dominated in the Southland with Magic, Kareem, Shaq, Kobe and all those guys. Paul was a great part of the Clippers and their history. We remember Chris as a rookie and that time I was doing the Clippers in Spanish on their TV Network. Things are changing at the Clippers, the guard is changing and there’s going to more changes on the horizon for the Clippers.

Amaury also discusses the Oakland A’s who could sell the team after they locate to their new stadium site. As MLB stops paying revenue sharing benefits to teams who just take the money and don’t even go to post season or even close the A’s owner John Fisher is not likely to spend money on the A’s from out of pocket. That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Mike Scioscia doing his best managing job to date

ANAHEIM–The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim were not expected to contend this season in this western division of the American League. The LA Angels have been playing with a “patched up”lineup, without the services of reigning MVP Mike Trout, and their ace pitcher Garrett Richards, and a plethora of pitchers that have been hurt like Tyler Skaggs, Andre Heaney, Nick Tropeano, even closers Huston Street and Cam Bedrosian. The shuttle from their AAA team in Salt Lake City, Utah to Anaheim, California is one of busiest flights in the LA Angels world these days.

The one milestone of Albert Pujols hitting his 600th home-run against fellow Dominican Ervin Santana on June3 at Angels Stadium is now history and since them he now is chasing Sammy Sosa for #8 in history. Pujols has 601 homeruns.

Against all the adversity the longest tenured manager in major league baseball, Mike Sciosia (18th years with the LA Angels) have done a tremendous job keeping this team just above water. Tonight at Angels Stadium the Halos play the second game of a four game set against the Kansas City Royals. The Angels are 35-35, holding a distant second place to the Houston Astros. Prior to his current series the Angels won two out of three in Detroit against the Tigers, and two of three in Houston against the Astros. The Angels are the only team in the western division to have taken a series against the Astros and at Houston.

Sciosia is the same consistent skipper, day in and day out, as he holds his daily press chat with the media in the Angels third base dugout a few hours porior to the game.

“I have a lot of talent here and we have a long way to do” says Sciosica who then responds to another question about Mike Trout, “:Of course we miss him, but we have a lot of very competitor ballplayers here”.

Since winning the 2002 World Series against the San Francisco Giants, Scioscia (once considered the top candidate to manage the team he played for, the Dodgers) has been regarded as one of the best managers in the game.He is showing why this year.

With a fourth place finish last year, the Los Angeles Angels were looking to improve in 2017, but their pitching situation was compromised from Spring Training. Somehow, Mike Scoscia has kept this boat afloat.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News and Commentary: Fans switching allegiance of Champs Giants for Warriors; Here comes da Judge Yanks rookie cleans up

ANAHEIM–The San Francisco Giants who are those guys? Asks fans at Oracle Arena in Oakland when asked about the not too long ago former baseball champions. The Giants who have hit the skids of late and are in dead last in the NL West are yesterday’s news as the new NBA champion Golden State Warriors move in and everything from television coverage to their fans buying product is moving and selling. Even their questionable move in switching flagship stations from the powerful flamethrower KNBR leaving to join 95.7 The Game which has less power was a business decision that turned out to be a boon.

The New York Yankees rookie Aaron Judge: The people are going to learn more about Judge in New York as well as right here in Anaheim their ready to take Judge on as an understudy. Comparing the rookie Judge to other sluggers he’s having a great first half of the season hitting .340. He hit a monster shot in Monday’s game to help the Yanks to a two run victory 5-3. Judge’s clout was good enough for his 22nd homer of the season. Judge is also leading the American League in hits 74, RBIs 57, runs, a .347 average and has a shot at the Triple Crown if he can keep it up through the second half of the season.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News and Commentary Part 1: Is the fixing up of the Coliseum a prelude to selling the A’s?; Kaval exploring Lake Merritt or Jack London Square for new A’s stadium

pro32.ap.org photo: Oakland A’s team president David Kaval has made a whole list of changes including concessions, day care for kids, new foods in the park, adding photos of old players around the park, renaming the park after Rickey Henderson, and taking off the tarp on the third deck and charging only $15 a seat to sit up there, and fans now can enter the park as early as 4:30p on Tuesdays to watch the A’s take batting practice,  plus much more here’s part one of this story

On the podcast with Amaury:

I’m a fan of A’s team president David Kaval not because I do the Oakland A’s Spanish broadcasts on radio. The man has a vision for his team he’s a young man he’s in his 40s. He married a lady from the Bay Area, he went to Stanford he’s a very smart person. He will reach his goal of building a new park for the A’s. He did the same thing for the MLS San Jose Earthquakes with Avaya Stadium he built a beautiful park for pro soccer.

Things are changing yes it’s like putting lip stick on a pig but we know that Kaval is trying. I remember when the San Francisco Giants former team managing partner Peter Magowan when he had the team move to AT&T Park . When Magowan first took over he did do a lot of team renovations to Candlestick Park when he and team president Larry Baer first took over the team in 1993. Kaval is taking action much in the same way making the park inviting for kids and families. Making it affordable with $15 seats on the third deck and for fans who want to see the A’s take batting practice letting them in early on Tuesday nights at 4:30PM. It’s going to be interesting to see how the A’s get their new park.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News and Commentary: There’s a lot of pain involved pitching for Oakland

Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Sean Manaea, left, and catcher Stephen Vogt talk after Manaea loaded the bases against the Seattle Mariners in the first inning of a baseball game, Monday, May 15, 2017, in Seattle. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson)

On That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast with Amaury:

The Oakland A’s pitcher Sean Manaea left Monday night’s game in Seattle with more arm trouble that is also shared with a number of starters on the A’s rotation. A’s pitcher Sonny Gray just came back, Kendall Graveman had been on the DL and is back, Jharel Cotton who started for the club is in Triple A Nashville. The A’s have not been able to have a healthy rotation at all it’s been difficult to compete like this in the big leagues this year if you don’t have a healthy pitching staff.

Pitchers have been hurt and this is not only at the Oakland A’s but it’s an epidemic throughout Major League Baseball. If they’re not 100% their 98% at the very best. On Monday night it was a Mariners 6-5 one run win to open this three game series at Safeco Field. Manaea took the loss in that game and the A’s are in situation right now where the main thing right now is to get the pitchers healthy.

Amaury takes a look at the A’s pitching DL situation and their current series with the Mariners plus more of the latest in MLB on the podcast at http://www.sportsradioservice.com

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News and Commentary: If Warriors want to go down in history as one of the greatest they have to start winning multiple championships

Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant smiles as he sits on the bench in the second half during Game 4 of the NBA basketball second-round playoff series against the Utah Jazz Monday, May 8, 2017, in Salt Lake City. On That’s Amaury’s Podcast (static for the first few minutes):

I never remember seeing a basketball team like the Warriors I used to be the Warriors play by play announcer and I covered the era where Michael Jordan, Scotty Pippin, Dennis Rodman, Steve Kerr and that legendary Bulls team was playing. Those Bulls teams won six titles, this Warriors team is a very, very good team but to compare them with those Bulls teams their going to have to win this year to get their second championship and win a few more after that.

They need to win this year or else they’ll go down in history as the team that was almost the greatest but just couldn’t win the title and more than likely they’ll be facing the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Finals who also just finished sweeping to advance to the next round. The Warriors are like a machine right now this team is better than they used to be because they have Kevin Durant a superstar. They have a great combination of stars and they seem to do everything right and they need to get the championship this year if they want to go down in history as the greatest franchise but right now those Chicago Bulls teams of the 90s have nothing to worry about.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News and Commentary: Giants get a turnaround to kick off May; It’s a Gray day for Oakland and that’s a great thing: Sonny Gray is back starts in Minnesota

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Johnny Cueto celebrates as he gets out of the seventh inning of a baseball game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Monday, May 1, 2017, in Los Angeles. (AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)

On That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, and Commentary:

LOS ANGELES–The Giants got by the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday night getting a jump start on the month of May after one their worst April’s in recent history with a one run 4-3 victory and getting past the pitcher in the National League Dodger starter Clayton Kershaw who dropped his record to 4-2 after coughing up a third inning homer to Giants hitter Buster Posey that put the Giants in front for the rest of the game. It was Posey’s second homer of the season.

The Minnesota Twins are a game over .500 host the Oakland A’s for the first of three games Tuesday night. The Twins are a game back in the American League Central behind Cleveland and Chicago. The Twins Miguel Sano is in the AL top ten and is the key show case in the Minnesota line up hitting a whopping .316, with 17 runs, 25 hits, and seven homers. The A’s Khris Davis is leading the AL with ten home runs and is fifth with 18 runs scored.

The A’s are happy to have starting pitcher Sonny Gray back making his first start of the regular season. Gray is coming off a lat injury he suffered in spring training and after much rehab in Nashville the A’s triple A system is feeling up to pitching back in the big leagues again. He struck out seven hitters for Nashville in his last outing for the Sounds. The A’s have also sent down outfielder Ryan LaMarre to Nashville and Rajai Davis who had been on the DL will rejoin the A’s in Minnesota to fill in for injured A’s pitcher Sean Manaea’s roster spot.

Breath of fresh air: Arroyo, Morse lead Giants to dramatic, 4-3 win over the Dodgers

AP17117205632762

By Morris Phillips

When it comes to Giants-Dodgers baseball, the emotions are all over the place.  You don’t necesarilly need to track Michael Morse circling the bases, tounge wagging, hair swinging to know that.

Manager Dave Roberts was tight-lipped, but you could literally see the decisions replaying in his head after his Dodgers saw their 3-0 lead evaporate on Wednesday, and morph into a frustrating 4-3 loss to the Giants. Did Roberts lift starter Alex Wood too soon? Did Pedro Baez literally go from unhittable to just-got-hit that fast? Did Adrian Gonzalez make the right play on Nick Hundley’s difficult grounder that would load the bases ahead of Hunter Pence’s game-winning, sacrifice fly? And what of that pitch sequence to Pence that allowed the free-swinging slugger to escape 0-2 and get a pitch elevated?

Ten pitches, all above the belly button with pace.  To Pence?

“I don’t like to second-guess sequencing too much,” Roberts said, after noting the similarity in Ross Stripling’s two-strike offerings.

Roberts and Morse weren’t the only ones reacting to the game’s dramatic turn.

Sergio Romo wanted to be today’s news in his return to AT&T Park. But he wasn’t that after allowing Christian Arroyo’s first major league home run, and seeing his ERA jump to 10.57. Romo’s 80-mph slider unleashed the 21-year old’s big swing, a certain reminder why no one in the Giants’ organization was willing to entertain trade offers involving their top-tiered prospect.

Arroyo’s quick, powerful swat was reminiscent of 23-year old Buster Posey’s swing in 2010, when the Giants’ catcher deposited 18 balls beyond the fences in his first, full big league season.

While Morse’s game-tying shot in the eighth provided the game’s signature moment, Arroyo not-so-quietly made it possible with his shot in the seventh.

“We were down three. Now we’re down one.  We were just not doing anything against Wood,” manager Bruce Bochy admitted.

Dodgers’ starter Alex Wood didn’t allow a hit until Drew Stubbs led off with a single in the sixth. But Wednesday’s outing was Woods’ first one of any length since the end of spring training. Roberts approached it cautiously just as he did when Stripling flirted with a no-hitter a year earlier in similar circumstances.  So with a 3-0 cushion in the seventh, Roberts pulled the plug on Wood, looking to gain confidence in his reconfigured bullpen outside of reliable closer Kenley Jansen.  Roberts’ move didn’t work.

“The bullpen’s been great all year for us,” Wood said.  “It was a tough one for us tonight.”

How tough? Flamethrower Pedro Baez, summoned in the eighth, had not allowed a run in six, previous appearances. Morse, on the other hand, just returned to town for the first time as a Giant in three years.  Part of the club’s early season shakeup, Morse and Kelby Tomlinson were recalled from AAA Sacramento earlier in the day.

One pitch after Morse waved at Baez’ 95-mph heat, he sent one into the left field bleachers, setting off the slugger’s unbridled celebration.  You can’t make this stuff up: The game score on Wednesday was exactly the same before and after Morse’s shot as it was in the Giant’s 2014 NLCS clincher against St. Louis.

“It was cool and not only for me,” Morse said. “I think for the team, it was a really big moment.”

The Giants conclude their series with the Dodgers on Thursday at 1245p in a matchup of Matt Moore and 20-year old Julio Urias, making his season debut.
