by Jerry Feitelberg

USA Today photo: Arizona Wild Cats Ryan Anderson is pumping up his team leading the Cats with most points scored per game

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast the Cardinal (11-4) have won two of their last three games, last Thursday was a tough loss to the Arizona Wild Cats (16-4) 71-51. The Wild Cats were a  force to reckon with as they added some offensive punch.

They got help from their key player Ryan Anderson who leads Wild Cats in points and rebounds he led as Wild Cat scorers with 18 points. The Cardinal meanwhile got back on track with a win over Arizona State University 75-73. It was a close game but just the same Stanford head coach Johnny Dawkins has to be relieved to be back in the win column.

The Cardinal hit the road for a three game trip they head to Colorado (15-5) on Wednesday and then onto Utah (15-5) on Saturday and close out the trip at Cal (14-6) on Sunday Feb 6th. Pac 12 basketball is a war and the battle continues Wednesday for Stanford.

Rosco Allen’s Lay Up Upends ASU

STANFORD, Calif. – Rosco Allen’s lay-up with 3 seconds left handed Stanford a 75-73 victory over the visiting Arizona State Sun Devils Saturday night at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal led its guests for the majority of the game, but despite holding numerous double-digit leads in the 2nd half, couldn’t put the game completely out of reach.

“That’s probably his first basket of that magnitude,” said Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins on Allen’s bucket. “That’s a great thing for any player. Lots of guys can play their whole career and not make a play like that.”

With the Sun Devils in a full-court press to try to stymie Stanford’s chance at breaking a 73-73 deadlock with just over a dozen seconds remaining, the Cardinal (11-7, 4-3 Pac-12) managed to feed Allen across the center court line. From there, Allen drove to the hoop through 3 Arizona State defenders, finishing with a right-handed finger roll for the game-winner before tumbling to the court and sliding out of bounds.

“Full court you have more space,” said Allen. “You have more time to see where defenders are.”

The Hungarian forward, one of three captains for the Cardinal, led his team throughout the night. He scored 24 points on 8-for-14 shooting over his 37 minutes of play. The senior also hit 5 of 6 free throws in rebounding back from a 4-point performance in Thursday’s loss to Arizona.

“I’m just happy we got the win,” said Allen. “The Arizona game was a struggle. I happy to bounce back strong.”

Allen received some support from an unlikely source. Senior Grant Verhoeven pitched in 9 points off the bench in just 17 minutes off the bench. The center also hit the first three-pointer of his collegiate career.

“That was my first one in college,” said Verhoeven. “But as a team you can’t count on the three. Sometimes we’re awesome, sometimes we’re not.”

Verhoeven has seen his role increase with Reid Travis still out with an injury and Verhoeven’s health improving from injuries of his own.

“I’m finally getting healthy,” said Verhoeven. “I’m still not there. I’ve struggled with injuries the last couple years. Being healthy helps out a lot.”

Marcus Allen pitched in 13 points for the Cardinal while Michael Humphrey netted 11 points and 11 rebounds. Arizona State’s Tra Holder had a team-high 18 points, while Willie Atwood added 16.

Holder had an opportunity to but ASU on top late, but his three-pointer with 15 seconds left was off the mark. Rosco Allen dove in for the loose ball that went out of bounds and, following a lengthy review by the officials, possession was awarded to Stanford for the fateful final play.

“I couldn’t tell you who touched it last,” said Allen. “It was bang-bang.”

Stanford led 66-56 with 4:50 left to play, but Arizona State went on a 15-4 run to take a 71-70 lead with 1:41 left to play. Stanford took the lead back at 72-71, then Dorian Pickens hit one of two free throws but Savon Goodman nailed a jumper with 36 seconds left to tie the game at 73.

The Cardinal led 40-34 at the half, but couldn’t build its edge by more than 10 points in the 2nd half against a resilient ASU(11-9, 1-6) squad looking for its 2nd Pac-12 win.

“That’s something we have to work on,” said Verhoeven. “We have to have the cutthroat mentality. When we get ahead we have to hold it. We let them have some easy buckets they shouldn’t have had. As a team, going forward, we need to work on that.”

After three-straight at home, the Cardinal hits the road for three. They’ll face a trio of teams they are familiar with, heading to Utah and Colorado before heading into Haas Pavilion for the second round of the Big Game.

“With the league as balanced as it is, I think any team can beat any other team any night,” said Dawkins. “You have to be prepared, you have to be focused, you have to play 40 minutes of really good basketball to win in this league.”

NCAA podcast with Matt Harrington: Duquense’s Mens BB team still stuck in snow storm on Penn Turnpike National Guard trying to get them out

On the NCAA Podcast today Duquense University’s Men’s basketball team got stuck at 9:00 AM Eastern after playing with the snow blizzard coming down. The basketball team was forced to park on the road and have been held up there ever since.

The National Guard now has been asked to assist to those stuck on the freeways such as the Duquense basketball team. Pennsylvania Govrenor said for all residents to stay inside and not travel. The snow blizzard has buried parts of the east coast up to 12 feet. Latest word on Duquense Men’s team as of 6:00PM Eastern they are still stuck on the road and will have to spend the night on the bus.

Stanford is preparing to host the ASU for Saturday night and anxious to win. The Cardinal struggled losing Arizona Wild Cats 71-57. It wasn’t even close and no doubt that Stanford head coach Johnny Dawkins is preparing the team to work at these particular goals, improve on free throws and shoot better from the field.

Big Second Half Lifts No.12 Arizona Over Stanford

By Matthew T.F. Harrington

photo credit: gostanford.com Stanford’s Marcus Sheffield drives the ball as the Cardinal are denied by Arizona on Thursday night

The Stanford Cardinal appeared poised to take the 12th-ranked Arizona Wildcats to the limit Thursday night at Maples Pavilion, but a one-point halftime deficit turned into a 71-57 loss for the Cardinal.

Arizona guard Gabe York scored a game-high 19 points while teammate Ryan Anderson pitched in 18 at starting forward. Stanford’s stellar freshman guard Marcus Sheffield continued his meteoric rise to become one of the Cardinal’s most potent scoring threats, netting 17 points for his third double-digit scoring output over his last 6 games.

The Cardinal (10-7, 3-3 Pac-12) struggled from the field, shooting 30 percent from the field while only hitting 4 of a total 21 threes attempted. Arizona (16-3, 4-2) went 8 for 18 from downtown while hitting nearly half (48 percent) of their shots from the floor.  Stanford only turned the ball over 9 times and managed 7 steals but a 42-29 rebounding margin in favor of Arizona spoiled the host team’s night.

The Cardinal trailed by as much as 8 points at 12-4 five minutes into the first half, but outscored the Cats 26-19 to head to the locker room at the half down 31-30. Stanford took its only lead of the game 5:43 into the 2nd when Grant Verhoeven hit a free throw to make it 40-39 for the home side. Arizona would go on to score the next 12 points unanswered to build an insurmountable 51-40 lead with 8 minutes left. They would outscore Stanford 20-17 over the final minutes of regulation.

Stanford gets an opportunity to avenge its loss when they host Arizona State Saturday night at Maples Pavilion. The Sun Devils are currently 1-5 in Pac-12 play. Arizona State fell to Cal 75-70 Thursday night.

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry Feitelberg, Jeremy Harness, and Amaury Pi Gonzalez Mon Jan 18, 2016

On the podcast Jerry, Jeremy and Amaury discuss what to expect this Thursday when the rugged Arizona Wild Cats a very physical team that dominates in the paint and on the boards come to Maples Pavilion to face the Stanford Cardinal (10-6). The Cardinal are all set with their top scorers and are coming off a victory against the Cal Bears 77-71 last Thursday at Maples.

Arizona is a different team they have a dominate record coming in at 15-3 and they’ve worked hard for every win. This school in the last three years has developed into one of the finest shooting schools from the free throw line and have a success rate outside the arc.

The Cardinal will need to bring their A game to the gym at the farm on Thursday night. Jerry, Jeremy and Amaury highly recommend not to miss this game as the Cardinal will be throwing in everything including the kitchen sink. The Cardinal have their work cut out for them on Thursday night.

NCAA Podcast with Daniel Dullum: Stanford improves on rebounds, free throws, and lots of help from Rosco

by Dainiel Dullum

The Arizona Wild Cats (15-3)  will be making a trip to Stanford (10-6) on Thursday. The Cardinal are coming off a six point win last Thursday to the Cal Bears (12-6) at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal have some great offensive weapons coming into Thursday night’s contest with top scorers Rosco Allen, Marcus Allen, and Michael Humphrey. Rosco  had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Cardinal.

The Cardinal last Thursday played a real tight game on defense in the paint and protected the boards which might explains why they were able to hold the Bears to just six point for the 77-71 win in the two college’s basketball version of the Big Game.

Stanford had a game plan coming off a 67 percent average on the free throw line they saw the Bears commit fouls that resulted in their opportunities to get to the line and improve their average. It was the free throws, getting fouled, great shooting from Rosco that helped in the win Thursday. They get ready for Arizona this time at Stanford and the Cardinal could win but it will be a handful with Arizona’s brash offense and defense.

Stanford Cardinal basketball podcast with Ben Leonard: Cardinal got pumped for Cal last Thurs inflated offensive numbers

by Ben Leonard

photo credit: USA Today Stanford’s Rosco Allen trots behind Stanford head coach Johnny Dawkins Thursday vs. Cal

PALO ALTO–On the podcast the Stanford Cardinal success with their free throws and rebounding against the Cal Bears last Thursday night at Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto helped set a climate of staying ahead of a Cal team that’s starting to sputter after having huge success in mainly non conference games and the Cardinal after their tour of duty in the state of Oregon are feeling good about using Cal as a test dummy for improving their game average numbers for rebounds, free throws, and scoring.

Rosco Allen the Cardinal ace hardly could contain himself likewise for Cal they had trouble containing Allen all night. It was Allen who reached deep down in his basketball soul to help contribute towards Stanford’s six point lead over the Bears for the 77-71 win. Rosco finished the night with a team leading 22 points, 11 rebounds, and the Cardinal out rebounded the Bears 38-28.

The Cardinal gear up for their next opponent next Thursday night at Maples against an offensive Arizona Wild Cats team. The Cardinal hope to work that same magic they had on Thursday night on the Wild Cats that they did for Cal as they broke out of their 67% free throw average and tallied for one of their best free throw nights of the season.

PALO ALTO–Stanford needed a boost to maintain it’s six-point halftime lead, and it came from veteran Rosco Allen in the Cardinal’s 77-71 Pac-12 men’s basketball triumph over California at Maples Pavilion.

Allen finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds and one assist, as the Cardinal held a decisive 38-28 rebounding edge.

Meanwhile, Marcus Allen did considerable damage at the free throw line, hitting 12 of 16 from the stripe as he finished with 16 points. It was needed, as Cal drained 12 3-pointers while keeping pace with Stanford throughout the second half.

Allen, in fact, scored 10 of his 16 points in the final 5 ½ minutes – all of them at the line.

Free-throw shooting and rebounding turned out to be keys to the Cardinal win, as Stanford hit 30 of 38 at the line. Dorian Pickens and Marcus Sheffield finished with 14 and 11 points, respectively for the victorious Cardinal.

This was a remarkable performance at the charity stripe for Stanford, which came into the game shooting only 67 percent on its free throws this season.

The win didn’t come without a bit of last-second anxiety. Cal surged ahead early in the second half, Later, Stanford was nursing a three-point lead with 28 seconds remaining. But the Cardinal defense prevented Cal from inbounding the ball, and Michael Humphrey blocked an attempted layup by the Bears’ Tyrone Wallace to help secure the win.

Stanford improved to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-12 South. The Cardinal return to action on Jan. 21 when they host Arizona.

Dillon Brooks, Oregon’s multi-talented sophomore, put his talents on display to great effect Sunday night, leading the Ducks past Stanford 71-58 in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Ore.

The win completed a home sweep of the Bay Area schools. Oregon defeated Cal earlier in the week. It was the Ducks’ first home sweep of Cal and Stanford since 2007-08.

Brooks led the Ducks (13-3 overall, 2-1 Pac-12) with 15 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high seven assists. Tyler Dorsey and Dwayne Benjamin each added 12 points, with Jordan Bell contributing eight points and 10 rebounds for Oregon.

Also for Oregon, Chris Boucher had nine points and five blocks, while Casey Benson scored nine points (on three 3-pointers) to go with six assists. The Ducks maintained a 38-22 rebounding edge that included 15 offensive rebounds lading to 16 second-chance points. Stanford, by comparison, had three second-chance points.

The Ducks started slowly on offense, hitting only 8 of 20 from the field to open the game. But Oregon shot 51 percent the rest of the game and outscored the Cardinal 43-34 in the second half.

Stanford, meanwhile, shot 38 percent for the night.

The Cardinal led 15-9 until midway through the first half, when Oregon used an 8-2 run to tie the game at 17-17 on a Benson 3-pointer. The Ducks led 28-24 at halftime, and pulled away in the second half.

Stanford cut the lead to 60-53 with 2:44 remaining, but the Ducks sank nine straight free throws down the stretch.

Michael Humphrey led Stanford with 18 points.

Stanford Cardinal basketball podcast with Matt Harrington: Cardinal counting on the Marcus & Rosco show at Oregon Sunday

by Matt Harrington

The Stanford Cardinal who split two games with the two toughest teams in the Pac 12 this past week losing to Colorado and the next game defeating Utah. If you look at the landscape of the Pac 12 there’s a lot of parity. You look at as flow charts like the image of Colorado.

Stanford beats Utah, Utah beat Colorado, Colorado beats Stanford it’s a weird triangle, there’s a lot of that going on the Pac 12. Oregon State beats Cal,  Cal beats Oregon it’s circular. So Stanford is picking up a win in the standings but it’s going to be a dogfight in the Pac 12 this season.

There’s a lot of big teams that are picking up wins and their picking up losses but you look at Arizona who was at UCLA so there’s going to be a lot of parity in the Pac 12 Conference. It’s important for Stanford to win their game in Oregon Sunday as expected and it’s important for them to win the games that are coin flips.
