PALO ALTO–Somebody’s coming  into tonight’s game at Maple Pavilion hopping mad. The Oregon Ducks (20-5) who are coming to play Stanford tonight. In their last game last Thursday Oregon lost by 20 points at Cal. The Stanford Cardinal (11-11) are really going to be pushing tonight against Oregon as well after losing four straight. Stanford is going to have their hands full. They have been struggling defensively and they’ve been struggling offensively.

It’s really going to be tough for Stanford to right the ship and head coach Johnny Dawkins will have to work at getting the team on the same page. The Ducks coming off that loss to Cal and their going to be coming in hungry to beat Stanford. The Cardinal  might plan to prepare a trap game for Oregon where the Cardinal  sneak by and have an unsuspecting attack.

Oregon is coming up and they got chewed out by their head coach Dana Altman after the game on Thursday night and the Ducks are going to get going and that’s something that should concern Stanford.

PALO ALTO–The woes continue for the Stanford Cardinal as they lost their fourth straight game. The visiting Oregon State Beavers beat them 62-50. The Beavers were seeking to avenge the loss to Stanford earlier in the season at Gill Arena in Corvallis. The only time the Cardinal didn’t trail was the first twenty-seven seconds of the game when the score was 0-0. The Beavers took the early lead and never relinquished it. The Cardinal trailed by five at the half but scored just twenty-one points in the second half. They went cold and scored just one bucket during a seven-minute stretch midway through the second half. Both teams played sloppily down the stretch but Stanford could not get anything going as they went down to defeat. With the loss, Stanford is 11-11 for the year but are just 4-7 in Pac-12 ply and are currently in ninth place. The Beavers improved to 15-8.

The Beavers took an early 5-0 lead in the first period and led for all twenty minutes as the finished leading the Cardinal 33-29. The Beavers biggest lead was seven but every time the Cardinal closed the gap, the Beavers answered and kept them at bay. Stanford was led Grant Verhoeven, coming off the bench . with eight points. Rosco  Allen had seven and 6-foot nine-inch sophomore Mike Humphrey added six. Freshman guard Marcus Sheffield also added six.  The Beavers were led by Tres Tinkle’s ten, while Malcom Duvier pitched in with nine. Duvivier hit three three-point shots.  Gary Payton, OSU’s leading scorer, had just four points in the half. Stanford shot 52.4% from the floor while OSU’s percentage was just 46.2% Both teams had nine defensive rebounds. OSU had five offensive boards while Stanford could just get one. Big difference in the score was due to the fact that OSU scored nine second chance points and  the Cardinal did not get any.

The Beavers scored the first four points in the second half to take a 37-29 lead. They incresed the lead to eleven with 12;46 left in the game. OSU’s Langston Morris-Walker , who hails from Berkeley, hit a three-pointer to give the Beavers the big advantage. The Beavers biggest lead of the night was twelve but the Cardinal, try as they might, could not overcome the deficit. They did cut the lead to five when Rosco Allen scored a layup. Allen was fouled but he missed the free throw. The Beavers increased the lead to eight but the Cardinal’s Dorian Pickens hit a three to cut the lead to five with 1:31 left in the game. The Beavers led at that point 54-49 but they took command of the last 91 seconds as they outscored the Cardinal 8-1 to win by twelve 62-50.

Game notes- Rosco Allen led Stanford with twelve points. Grant Verhoeven added ten and freshman Marcus Sheffield had eight. The Cardinal shot just 6 for 24 in the seconad half and shot 37% for the game. OSU shot 45.8% from the floor. Scoring leaders for the Beavers were Tres Tinkle with ninetine, Gary Payton added fourteen and Malcolm Duvivier pitched in with eleven.

by Jerry Feitelberg

PALO ALTO–The Stanford Cardinal (11-10) are just one game over .500 they lost to Colorado last week and lost to Utah and then to Cal on Saturday night in Berkeley to get swept on the three game road trip. They’ve slipped in the Pac 12 and the Cardinal are almost at the bottom of the Pac 12. The team with worst record in the Pac 12 are the Washington State Cougars and the Cardinal are not doing well either.

The Cardinal defense: they didn’t play defense and their opponents have taken it to them and the Cardinal had beat Cal last time they met 77-71 but lost their four game win streak against Cal on Saturday. Part of Stanford’s problem was their outstanding forward Marcus Allen wasn’t involved in most of the game last Saturday against Cal.

While Stanford was having its own problems on offense Saturday against California at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, it was the polar opposite for the Bears in the crosstown Pac-12 men’s basketball rivalry.
The visiting Cardinal (11-10 overall, 4-6 Pac-12) was held to 38 percent shooting from the field in their 76-61 loss to Cal. Meanwhile, the Bears had four players hit double figures, led by Jordan Mathews with 18 points.
The loss snapped a four-game Cardinal winning streak against Cal, which outrebounded Stanford 41-25 and blocked four Cardinal shots.
It wasn’t all bad for Stanford, as senior Rosco Allen paced the Cardinal with 18 points, including 7-of-8 free throws and pulling down a team-high eight rebounds to go with three steals. Sophomore Dorian Pickens collected 10 points and five rebounds, while Malcolm Allen added nine points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting effort to go along with three assists.
The Cardinal, who dropped to eighth place in the Pac-12 standings, return home to Maples Pavilion Thursday when they host Oregon State. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Stanford hosts Oregon Saturday at 1 p.m.

Stanford Cardinal basketball podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Cardinal defense just couldn’t figure out how to stop Poetl and Utes

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry Feitelberg the Cardinal defense just couldn’t find a way to stop Jakob Poetl and his 23 point shooting game last Saturday.  The Cardinal Rosco Allen (16 pts), Dorian Pickens (16 pts), Marcus Sheffield (13) and Marcus Allen (10) all double digits last Saturday but couldn’t figure out the Utes.

Poetl was unstoppable he was hitting buckets from everywhere on the floor and the Cardinal just couldn’t get  an opportunity to slow him down. His 23 points was indicative of the kind of offensive game that he had and double teaming didn’t do any good too because four other Cardinal shooters also had double figures enough to take out the Cardinal by a final of 96-74. The Cardinal complete the three game road trip with Cal on Friday night at Haas Pavilion.

Stanford’s men’s basketball weekend road swing ended badly, as the Cardinal dropped a 96-74 Pac-12 game at Utah’s Huntsman Center Saturday in Salt Lake City.

Jakob Poeltl led the Utes with a game-high 23 points, topping the 20-point mark for a career-best third straight game. Also hitting double-digits for Utah were Dakarai Tucker with 17 points, Kyle Kuzma with 16, Brandon Taylor with 15 and Lorenze Bonam with 14 points to go with his five assists.

The Utes (17-5 overall, 6-3 Pac-12) shot a blistering 71 percent from the field in the first half (including 6 of 10 behind the 3-point arc), building a 48-39 halftime lead in the process. Early in the second half, the Cardinal (11-9 overall, 4-5 Pac-12) whittled away at Utah’s lead and pulled to within 62-54 with just under 11 minutes remaining.

Utah responded by scoring 13 of the next 19 points to build a 17-point lead with 6:50 left. At the same time, the Utes held Stanford to 31 percent shooting in the second half.

Roscoe Allen and Dorian Pickens each scored 16 points to lead Stanford, which travels to Berkeley next Saturday for a Pac-12 game against California. Tip-off for the Cardinal-Bears contest is 1 p.m.

Stanford Cardinal basketball podcast with Matt Harrington: Dawkins gets his group together for battle in Utah

On the Stanford Cardinal (11-8) podcast with Matt Harrington the Cardinal gear up for what will be one of the team’s biggest challenge when they take on the Utah Utes (16-5). The Cardinal are coming off a difficult loss to the Colorado Buffaloes on Wednesday night 91-75 that started the first of this three game road trip.

Colorado could have closed the gap to 20 and the Cardinal struggled with Buffaloes offense with their top point scorers making it difficult to stop Buffaloes leading scorer George King 23 points and John Fortune 21 points. The Cardinal couldn’t get any offense going for themselves last Wednesday from their top scorers Rosco Allen and Mike Humphrey.

A hot second half of shooting for Rosco Allen wasn’t enough to offset a torrid Colorado attack Wednesday, as the Buffaloes roared past Stanford 91-75 in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Coors Events Center in Boulder, Colo.

Allen scored 20 of his 25 points in the second half, Marcus Sheffield was next with 12 points and Marcus Allen had 10 for the Cardinal in their sixth straight loss to Colorado.

Allen’s 25 points matched a career high.

While the Buffs (16-5 overall, 5-3 Pac-12) hit 44 percent from the field in the first half, Stanford (11-8 overall, 4-4 Pac-12) was held to 1-of 10 from 3-point range and 10 of 34 field goals. The Cardinal never recovered, trailing by 18 with six minutes to go before halftime.

Colorado opened the second half with a torrid 3 ½ minute run that built their lead to 22 points in less than three minutes. The Buffs built a 23-point lead with 12:50 left.

A Sheffield 3-pointer pulled Stanford to within 64-54 with 9:34 remaining, but that was as close as the Cardinal would get.

Colorado shot 49 percent from the field in the game, including 13 of 19 3-pointers. The Buffaloes also held a 46-38 rebounding advantage.

Stanford travels to Utah for a 2 p.m. game Saturday against the Utes.
