Fire grab early lead and hold on to top Quakes 2-1

The Chicago Fire (5-7-2, 16 points) took advantage of some sloppy defensive play by the San Jose Earthquakes (2-8-3, 9 points) to jump out to a two-goal lead and then held on for dear life at the end to win 2-1 on Saturday evening at Toyota Park.

The Quakes had a good scoring chance in the 24th minute when Magnus Eriksson started a rush at midfield. He found forward Danny Hoesen, along the left side of the box, but his shot attempt was deflected out of bounds. The ensuing corner kick from Chris Wehan deflected off a Chicago defender and bounced around in the middle of the box before it was cleared away by the Fire.

Ex-Quake forward Alan Gordon continued to haunt his own team in the 29th minute when he was able to head in a ball that Luis Solignac crossed into the center of the box from the right corner. Johan Kappelhof initiated the play and fed the ball over to the Argentinian forward who sailed the ball right on to the head of Gordon who was able to knock it into the goal past Quakes goalie Andrew Tarbell for his fourth goal of the season. It also marked Gordon’s third straight game with a goal.

In the second half, Chicago would get an early goal in the 49th minute. Brandt Bronico would dribble the down the right corner and fed a pretty pass that split past two Quakes defenders to a wide open Aleksander Katai who buried the ball in the upper left corner of the goal to give Chicago a 2-0 lead. It was the fourth goal of the season for the Serbian midfielder.

The Quakes cut the lead in half in the 75th minute when Vako started a rush at midfield, sent a long ball down to the right corner where captain Chris Wondolowski was able chase down. He quickly centered the ball into the box where Hoesen who was covered by a Fire defender one timed the ball with his left leg past Fire back up goalie Richard Sanchez. It was Hoesen’s team-leading seventh goal of the season.

San Jose put on a late push at the end of the game to try to get the equalizer. They had three corner kick opportunities in the last four minutes of the game, including a headed attempt by defenseman Jimmy Ockford that just sailed over the net in the final seconds of stoppage time, but weren’t able to cash in to salvage a point on the night.

GAME NOTES: Quakes defender Shea Salinas was injured in the 12th minute with a leg injury. Fatai Alashe substituted in for him. Fire goalie Patrick Mclain suffered a leg injury in the 44th minute and was replaced by Sanchez.

The Earthquakes have conceded in 18 straight regular season MLS matches. They have not conceded in 18 straight since the 2009 season.

The Earthquakes are 4-16-4 on the road since the start of last season with a -30 goal differential. Only three teams have lost more league road games, and only two teams have a worse road goal differential.

Seven of the Fire’s 18 goals this season have come from set pieces. Only Atlanta United (11) and the New York Red Bulls (eight) have more.

The Fire have lost three of their last four home games. They lost just two home games all of last season.

Chicago Fire leads the all time series 15-10-11. They are 9-2-6 against San Jose at home.

UP NEXT: The Quakes finish off their three game road trip in Portland when they take on the Timbers on Wednesday, June 6th at 7:30 pm PST at Providence Park.

Earthquakes get shut out by Galaxy 1-0 in California Clasico

By Pearl Allison Lo

CARSON, Calif. — It took a while, but Romain Alessandrini became the hero as Los Angeles won in the 82nd minute and defeated the San Jose Earthquakes in the first 2018 California Clasico at the StubHub Center Friday night.

Right after the Quakes made their first substitution in the 82nd minute, Alessandrini, who was tearful after, made the game’s first shot on target and converted.  It would be his third shot, a team-high. The last time Alessandrini scored was March 4th, the first game of the season.

It was close to being a different story though. In the 89th minute, the Quakes’ Danny Hoesen most likely would have had his fourth goal in a row, if goalie David Bingham did not deflect the ball, which hit the crossbar after. That was the only other shot on goal.

It was the Galaxy’s second 1-0 win in a row. The last time San Jose was blanked was May 5th. Both teams were struggling coming into the game in their last five.

Quakes’ coach Mikael Stahre evaluated the game, “…it was quite a good game. I think it was a game with lots of intensity and passion and I think we stood up in a good way and…we deserve at least a tie this evening.

Both teams were sporting the same uniform before the game, in support of the Major League Soccer’s Soccer For All initiative.

The first half saw a total of five shots. Attempts on both sides were matched by opposing players. The Quakes’ Vako had the most shots with three, but all were blocked.

Los Angeles’ Chris Pontius had a just wide header in the seventh minute.

One of Vako’s shot hit Emrah Klimenta in the arm in the 21st minute, but there was no call.

Shots picked up in the second half with a total of nine for the Galaxy and five for San Jose, but the defenses remained stalwart.

Alessandrini fell on his way to the net in the 51st minute.

Los Angeles’ Giovani dos Santos, who was questionable with an undisclosed injury, entered the game in the 75th minute.

When Vako was subbed out, he was the only player for San Jose with a shot, a total of five. At the end, Hoesen had two and Magnus Eriksson had one more.

Game Notes: Changes from last game for the Quakes were Shea Salinas, Vako and Chris Wondolowski put in the starting lineup.

The Galaxy were without a suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Up Next: San Jose will look to right their ship when they face the Chicago Fire Saturday June 2 at 5:30 pm PST.

Earthquakes lose to D.C. United 3-1

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Earthquakes welcomed D.C. United to Avaya Stadium Saturday night. San Jose looked forward to Retro Night while D.C. hoped to end their two-game losing skid.

Chris Wehan, a winger from Orange, California, made his MLS debut with the Quakes on this cool, windy evening in the South Bay. The Quakes appeared to be ready for the match, but they turned out to be unprepared. Well, at least in the first half, that is.

DC United grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 15th minute. Zoltan Stieber slipped behind the back line to get on the score sheet for the third straight game.

It wasn’t long before DC United doubled their lead. Darren Mattock scored a goal off a pass from Luciano Acosta to make it 2-0 at the 20th minute.

DC United capitalized off a Quakes’ turnover for a 3-0 lead at the 37th minute. Yamil Asad scored the third goal of the game in the midst of excess pressure.

After what appeared to be a countless number of missed shot attempts, San Jose cut its deficit to 3-1 at the 43rd minute. Danny Hoesen scored the Quakes’ first goal of the match.

Hoesen provided a necessary boost to help the Quakes avoid a shutout, but DC United proceeded to take a 3-1 lead to the locker room at the end of the first half.

Both teams returned to the field for the second half. Quakes captain Chris Wondolowski also entered the match, which excited most, if not all, fans in attendance.

Quakes goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell continued making noteworthy saves, including a flawless reaction save at the 57th minute, to fend off what could’ve been a fourth DC United goal.

The Quakes swapped Jackson Yueill in favor of Quincy Amarikwa, who made it clear that it was Quincy time.

Unfortunately, San Jose was unable to get past DC United as they kicked multiple saves that either ended up caught by the opposing goalkeeper David Ousted or just wide of the net.

The Quakes made their third and final substitution at the 82nd minute. Tommy Thompson took Vako’s spot on the field.

After a full 90 minutes plus three minutes of stoppage time, the score remained in the same and DC United defeated the Quakes 3-1.

Earthquakes settle for 4-point road trip after 2-2 draw against the WhiteCaps

By: Ana Kieu

The San Jose Earthquakes traveled to Western Canada to take on the Vancouver WhiteCaps–the team that eliminated them from the 2017 MLS Cup playoffs in the Knockout Round–in hopes of getting a win at BC Place on Wednesday night.

The Quakes appeared to be focused and ready for the WhiteCaps, according to a tweet on the team’s Twitter page.

However, the WhiteCaps got on the board first as Cristian Techara slipped one behind the Quakes’ back line at the 19th minute. Techara’s opening goal was the probable reason why Andrew Tarbell stepped up his game and drove down low to make a right-handed save to fend off a low-driven kick that looked like it was going to sneak into the net.

Danny Hoesen snatched the game-tying goal just one second before the end of the first half. The Quakes and WhiteCaps were tied 1-1 at the halftime break.

The second half kicked off and Nick Lima kicked in a sweet goal to put the Quakes ahead 2-1 at the 54th minute. But the Quakes’ lead was short-lived as the WhiteCaps tied the game 2-2 on Yordy Reyna’s equalizer at the 64th minute.

Seven minutes after the officials handed a yellow card to Anibal Godoy, the Quakes made their first substitution of the match as Francois Affolter went in for Shea Salinas and their captain Chris Wondolowski stepped on the field while Vako stepped out of the field.

The Quakes’ Florian Jungwirth got a yellow card for a slight jersey tug on a WhiteCaps player. Then, the Quakes made their third and final substitution of the match when Fatai Alashe took Jackson Yueill’s place on the field.

The match remained in a 2-2 deadlock, but there was still four minutes of stoppage time. Yet, the Quakes were unable to snap out of the deadlock, but took the 2-2 draw against the WhiteCaps nonetheless.

Wondolowski achieves MLS record in Earthquakes’ 3-1 win over Minnesota United FC

By Pearl Allison Lo

San Jose Earthquakes captain Chris Wondolowski achieved a MLS record with the most goals for a single club, facing Minnesota United FC in a 3-1 win Saturday.

The Earthquakes ended a seven game, 70 day drought without a win including seven minutes of stoppage time. San Jose continued their dominance versus the Loons (4-0-0). The Quakes have scored three goals apiece in the last three, Danny Hoesen has scored at least one in each of those games and Wondolowski has put up an assist in all four games.

Both teams were able to put numbers on the board after being shut out in their previous games.

Wondolowski was not in the opening lineup for a second game, but entered in the 55th minute.  He made an indirect and direct impact in the 69th and 76th minutes.

The indirect play was when Wondolowski made a scoop pass from the endline to Hoesen. It was Hoesen’s second straight goal in two games versus Minnesota and third overall in that same span. He had the game-winner this time and the last.

For the 76th minute, Wodolowski’s attempt was set up when Francisco Calvo was called for a handball when he blocked Hoesen’s shot.

Wondolowski made a bit of a straightaway shot for the 3-1 cushion. It was San Jose’s first decision of the season that went beyond a goal.

The Quakes were not without their share of luck however.

San Jose was fortunate when Christian Ramirez hit the crossbar 41st minute. Calvo also came close when he hit the near post in the 90th minute. Minnesota was a victim of the post in their last MLS game as well.

The Quakes got the lead goal for the first time since April 14. In just the second minute, Magnus Eriksson converted on an early penalty kick to the bottom left corner as goalie Bobby Shuttleworth went to his left. Robert Jonas notably mentioned that “it was the first time since May 2014 that someone other than Wondolowski attempted a penalty kick” for San Jose. Anibal Godoy got the “assist.”

In the 24th minute, Quakes’ goalie Andrew Tarbell was able to parry away the ball first, with a defender behind him in the box hoping to connect with the ball.

However, in the 26th minute, Shea Salinas gave the ball away to Ramirez, who one-timed a long arc into the bottom left corner of the net from the right corner of the box to even the score.

At the end of the first half, Eriksson, Hoesen and Vako each had two shots with one on target apiece for San Jose. Both teams received yellow cards for unsporting behavior.

There was stoppage in the 53rd minute due to two separate injuries. The Quakes’ Cummings came out only to return straight after. Jahmir Hyka was not as fortunate, but Wondolowski came in as the substitute.

A scary head-to-head collision occurred going for the ball between Florian Jungwirth and Calvo in the 85th minute. Both remained in the match.

Game Notes: Jungwirth also had an aerial clearance in the first half and when the Loons had momentum from one end to the other, as the lone defender on the field, Jungwirth was able to keep up and make a stop in the second. Minnesota’s Alexi Gomez had a game-high five shots. Eriksson had a career-high four shots.

Up Next: The Quakes will have their first short turnaround when they play again Wednesday at 7:30 pm PT to see Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Timbers cut down Quakes with late goal in 1-0 victory

By Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE–If the San Jose Earthquakes (1-5-2) didn’t have bad luck, they wouldn’t have any luck at all. Diego Valeri scored the game-winning (and only) goal for the Portland Timbers (3-3-2) in the 88th minute to propel Portland to a 1-0 victory on Saturday evening at Avaya Stadium.  It was the third loss in a row for San Jose, whose winless streak extended to seven games.

Valeri, the Argentinian forward, received a free kick was he was fouled by a Quakes defender on a controversial platy during an on-coming rush. He didn’t waste his chance as he buried the ball into the upper right corner of the goal for the game-winner.

Both teams traded chances early in the game with Timbers forward Fanendo Adi sent in a shot from the top of the D that hit off the right corner of the post in the eighth minute. Quakes forward Danny Hoesen, who received a nice feed from Vako from just outside the D, had his shot on goal stopped by Timbers goalie Jeff Attinella just a minute later.

“It’s definitely frustrating to not get a victory after so long”, said defenseman Shea Salinas on his team’s seven-game winless streak. “So we gotta look at the things we’re doing well and be more consistent with it.”

The Timbers controlled play between the 18th minute and 23rd minutes with Sebastian Blanco shot from 30 yards away was easily handled by Quakes goalie Andrew Tarbell in the 18th minute. Larrys Mabiala header attempt sailed high over the goal from a set piece in the 22nd minute. Adi sent a shot wide a minute later as Portland created  sustained pressure in the Quakes defensive zone.

The Quakes would then tilt the pitch in their favor the next five minutes when Magnus Eriksson led a rush that ended in Nick Lima blasting a shot from the right corner that sailed off the top of the crossbar in the 25th minute.

The best chance for San Jose came when Mabiala tripped up Vako just outside the D box in the 29th minute. His free kick just trickled wide of the goal that beat Attinella to the right side.

The Quakes would keep the pressure on three minutes later when a shot from Hoesen ricochet off a Timbers defender on to the foot of Vako. His shot was stopped by a diving Attinella in the 32nd minute.

Portland would respond with two late chances right before halftime. Cristhian Paredes’ shot in the 44th minute from 20 yards out was turned away by Tarbell. Adi then took a centering feed and his chip shot sailed wide in the 45 minute.

San Jose would control the tempo in the second half. Hoesen took a centering pass into the goal box and his header attempt was saved by Attinella. The chance came off a free kick which was a result of a yellow card issued to Diego Chara in the 53rd minute.

Hoesen then sent cross pass into Wondolowski in the 56th minute but Wondolowski’s chip shot went wide.

Christopher Wehan, who made his MLS debut in the 71st minute, sent in a shot pass from 20 yards out that deflected off Quincy Amarikwa’s foot out of play in the 76th minute.

The Quakes made a late push in the final ten minutes of the game with chances before Valeri’s goal, including a couple of chances in stoppage time but could never get the ball into the back of the net.

“I’m super disappointed from the result perspective”, said head coach Mikael Stahre. “The only thing we can do is move forward, analyze, practice harder, and hopefully we can get a victory soon.”

GAME NOTES: Scratches for Quakes- M – Tommy Thompson (illness); D – Yeferson Quintana (ankle), M – Eric Calvillo (knee) For Timber- D – Roy Miller (left Achilles tendon), F – Jeremy Ebobisse (right thigh); D – Vytas (right thigh), D – Bill Tuiloma (right knee), M – David Guzman (right knee)

San Jose Earthquakes legend, and current color commentator, Chris Dangerfield was elected into the Quakes Hall of Fame during a ceremony at halftime.

Hoesen has three goals, including the team leader with three this season, in this last eight appearances for the Earthquakes. He had eight in his first 31 games with the team.

Paredes was issued a yellow card in one minute into stoppage time in the 1st half. Anibal Godoy was issued a yellow card in the 69th minute after a tackle on Chara.

Wehan came in on a substitution for Wondolowski.

The last time the Earthquakes have gone seven consecutive MLS games without a win was Aug. 19-Sept. 28, 2016.

The Timbers won their first MLS road game since a 1-0 victory on Sept. 9, 2017 at New York City FC. Including the postseason, they are now 1-5-3 and have been outscored 16-9 since then.

Portland leads the overall series 9-4-7 against San Jose. The Quakes are 4-2-4 at home against the Timbers.

The announced attendance was 17,850.

UP NEXT: The Quakes are back on the road as they travel to Minneapolis to take on Minnesota United FC on Saturday, May 12 at 11 am PT at TCF Bank Stadium.
