San Francisco 49ers preview podcast: 49ers look to get back on track against Rams on Sunday Night Football

By Jeremiah Salmonson

The San Francisco 49ers are coming off a rough week. Last week while the 49ers had most of their injured players returning they struggled mightily.

In week five against the Miami Dolphins the 49ers suffered one of their worst losses of the season. The Dolphins came into Levi stadium and won by a commanding score of 43-17. The 49ers played easily their worst game of the season falling to 2-3 on the year.

In week six the 49ers look to get back on track against the 4-1 Los Angeles Rams. The Rams beat the Washington Football Team in week five so the 49ers will surely be a test for them. On paper, this should be a fairly evenly matched game.

The 49ers will look for a rebound performance from previously injured players like Jimmy Garoppolo and Deebo Samuel. If the 49ers can put together a competent offensive showing against a good defensive team it would be a step in the right direction.

The Rams on the other hand will look to move to 5-1 on the season. This year has been a good start to an underwhelming 2019 campaign.

Week six remains a big test for an injury plagued 2020 49ers team. Will they be able to right the ship and get back to .500 on the year? The kick off is set for 5:20 PM on Sunday on NBC.

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 David the 49ers were blown out last Sunday against the Miami Dolphins 43-17 but are favored to beat the Los Angeles Rams. 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garroppolo had struggled all afternoon was this just a bad game for the 49ers and that they have a game plan in place for the Rams on Sunday Night Football?

#2 Was the ankle a factor that might have hampered Garroppolo and his ability to be mobile and throw against the Dolphins last Sunday?

Headline Sports podcast with London Marq: Dodgers Kershaw scratched back spasms last night; Cowboys owner Jones says Prescott will be back in spring; plus more

The Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Klay Kershaw did not start on Tuesday night due to back spasms against the Atlanta Braves in Globelife Park in Arlington. Here is Kershaw leaving the field during game 2 of the NLDS against the San Diego Padres Wed Oct 7, 2020 (AP News photo)

On Headline Sports with London:

#1. How big a of a loss was it for the Los Angeles Dodgers not to have Klay Kershaw not able to start in Tuesday night’s game against the Atlanta Braves who is out with back spasms.

#2 After the horrible ankle injury that all of you saw Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says that quarterback Dak Prescott should be back in time for spring football and that the injury should be healed and Prescott should be ready by April or May.

#3 Oakland A’s team vice president Billy Beane has an offer that he can’t refuse an offer in the making Boston Red Sox owner John Henry merging groups Fenway Sports Group and RedBall Acquisition Corp that plans to be publicly traded something that MLB rules say that teams can not have public ownership. Will the decision of being the Red Sox being publicly traded hinge on Beane’s decision joining the Sox?

#4 How would Beane’s departure impact the A’s who under Beane has saw the A’s make post season 11 times in the past 21 years and having some of the lowest payrolls in baseball without Billy’s talents around anymore will the A’s start suffering on the field?

#5 London talk about the Tampa Bay Rays taking the first three games against the Houston Astros wasting little time going up three games to none. Does indicate how the Rays quickly could close out this series?

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Barbara Mason: Raiders big win over Chiefs was indication after close loss to Bills

Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs (28) scores on a seven yard carry in the first half of Sun Oct 11th’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium (AP News photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Barbara:

#1 Barbara how much of an indicator was the Las Vegas Raiders (3-2) game with the Buffalo Bills (4-0) in week 4 when they lost by just a touchdown against a then 3-0 team that they would go onto do well against a tough Kansas City Chiefs (4-1) team in week 5.

#2 How much credit does this Raiders defense deserve after shutting out the Chiefs in the third quarter and then quarterback Derek Carr and the offense went to work in the fourth quarter and scored 16 points for insurance points and the 40-32 win.

#3 Carr’s line for Sunday in a great afternoon throwing for 347 yards and three touchdowns the Chiefs no doubt have a Super Bowl caliber pass rush and that speaks to the Raiders offensive line.

#4 The Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was no slouch either he threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns it was just that the Raiders defense was able to control more the of the Chiefs offense in the second half and the Raiders had a successful offense that took advantage to block for Carr and gave him time to throw.

#5 The Raiders have a bye next Sunday before they play their next game against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sun Oct 25th as this will be a quick month for the Raiders.

Poor Offensive Effort Hand Forty Niners A 43-17 Loss

No one from the San Francisco 49ers defense really got in the way of Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick who threw for three touchdowns at Levis Stadium in Santa Clara on Sun Oct 11, 2020 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

Sunday afternoon the San Francisco 49ers (2-2) took on the Miami Dolphins (1-3) at Levi Stadium. The team welcomed back quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo who had missed the past two games due to a sprained ankle. He is coming off a full week of practice and the hope is that this will get the team back on the winning track after dropping one to the Philadelphia Eagles 25-20.

Despite being underdogs the Dolphins put up two touchdowns in the first quarter. Ryan Fitzpatrick connected with Adam Shaheen for three yards and the touchdown for the early lead 7-0. At 4:14 in the first quarter Myles Gaskin had a one yard rush to extend Miami’s lead 14-0 with San Francisco yet to get anything going.

San Francisco would finally get on the board with a seven yard rush by Kyle Juszcyzk. The Forty Niners had the opportunity to get back into this game. That opportunity vanished when the Dolphins answered with three unanswered scores, the first a DeVante Parker 22 yard pass from Fitzpatrick followed by two field goals.

The first was a 26 yard field goal and the second one a long 50 yard attempt that was good for a 27-7 lead. Jimmy Garoppolo threw his first interception of the season in the second quarter that led to a Miami score. With 14 seconds left in the half Garoppolo threw his second interception of the game. The long anticipated return of Garoppolo showed a struggling quarterback who didn’t look at all ready to return to action. The halftime score was 30-7 in favor of the Miami Dolphins. Garoppolo finished the half seven of 17 for 77 yards and two interceptions.

The opening drive of the third quarter showed a fired up San Francisco defense but the question remained; could the San Francisco offense take advantage. As expected Beathard took over at quarterback in San Francisco’s first possession of the third quarter. Thanks in part to two Miami penalties and a 12 yard pass completion followed by a 19 yard pass for the touchdown, San Francisco was finally getting something going defensively and offensively although that came to an abrupt end in the second half.

Trailing by the score of 30-14 the worst was yet to come for the Forty Niners. Fitzpatrick would throw a 32 yard touchdown to Preston Williams and the Miami quarterback was having a banner day. San Francisco’s Robbie Gould would kick a 37 yard field goal and going into the fourth quarter San Francisco trailed by the score of 37-17.

San Francisco had a lackluster fourth quarter and Miami would kick a 31 yard and a 49 yard field goal. There was not much that Miami was unable to do. They won this game by the score of 43-17 in an unexpected turn outplaying San Francisco on offense and defense. Despite having some of their key players returning to the field it did absolutely nothing for the team. The Forty Niners have a lot of questions moving forward, the most pressing at the position of quarterback.

After last week’s loss to Buffalo, Raiders quarterback Derek Car said, “I’m sick of losing”.

That seemed to have sparked his teammates as the Raiders went into Arrowhead Stadium and knocked off the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, 40-32.

“I’m really proud of our guys,” said head coach Jon Gruden. “We beat a really good football team.  We had a lot of guys step up.”

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr snapped a personal 6 game losing streak, being 0-6 in his career against Kansas City before the game.

“I have taken a lot of sad walks up that ramp, but not today,” said Carr. “I am going to enjoy this one.”

Carr threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns, one each to Henry Ruggs, Nelson Agholor and Darren Waller.

“He has been through a lot here as a Raider,” said Gruden of Carr. “This was certainly a big win for him.”

Ruggs returned from missing two games with a hamstring injury, catching two balls for 118 yards including a 72 yard touchdown.

“It just shows that we are not here to lay down, we are here to compete,” said Ruggs.

The Raiders last beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in a 26-16 win on October 28, 2012.  Carson Palmer was the Raiders quarterback in that game.

“What better opportunity to see what this team is made of?,” said Carr. “This team is legit.”

With the win, the Raiders improved to 3-2 on the season heading into their bye week.

Game Notes:

  • The Raiders outgained the Chiefs in total yards, 490-413.
  • Raiders’ running back Josh Jacobs rushed 23 times for 77 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Eleven different Raiders players caught at least one ball from QB Derek Carr.
  • The Chiefs loss ended a 13 game winning streak.

#2 San Francisco quarterback Nick Mullens struggled under center last Sunday leaving the question who will start this Sunday. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said with Jimmy Garoppolo out with an ankle injury he’s going with Mullens again. How do you see Mullens throwing against the Miami Dolphins defense this Sunday.
