SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – It was a big day on Saturday at Scottsdale Stadium for a veteran trying to catch on in San Francisco’s 12-7 Cactus League exhibition win over the Chicago White Sox.

Darin Ruf, a 33-year-old non-roster invitee, was 2-for-2 with a pair of home runs and three runs batted in. In 19 at-bats in 10 games this spring, Ruf, who hasn’t played in the majors since 2016, is hitting .368 with three home runs and eight RBIs. He hit 81 home runs and batted .315 in three seasons in the Korean Baseball Organization with the Samsung Lions.

Top catching prospect Joey Bart continues to impress. Bart homered – his second of the spring – and is hitting .438 in the Cactus League.

It was an offensive show provided by both teams for the announced crowd of 9,721, who were enjoying the 82-degree game-time temperatures. The Giants scored 12 runs on 18 hits, while the White Sox had seven runs on nine hits, but committed two errors.

Also contributing offensively for the Giants, Donovan Solano was 2-for-2 with an RBI and scored twice, Zach Green was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, Brandon Belt collected two hits, and Buster Posey (hitting .412) was 2-for-2.

San Francisco took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on RBI singles by Belt and Posey that drove in Jaylen Davis and Evan Longoria.

The White Sox answered with a run in the top of the fourth.
Ruf and Bart hit back-to-back home runs for San Francisco in the bottom of the fifth. It was the second Cactus League homer of the spring for each.

Chicago used a six-run rally to take the lead in the top of the sixth. After James McCann’s two-run triple pulled the Sox to within 6-5, Zach Collins’ RBI single tied the game. Chesler Cuthbert’s run-scoring single gave the White Sox a 7-6 lead.

The White Sox did most of that damage off Giants reliever Jerry Blevins. Enderson Franco (1-0) gave up two runs for a blown save, but got the win.

Green hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to put the Giants back in front at 8-7.

Solano added an RBI double in the eighth, driving in Billy Hamilton, and Green reached on an error, allowing Solano to score the Giants’ 10th run. Ruf’s second homer of the game extended San Francisco’s lead to 12-7, capping a four-run rally.

Trevor Cahill started for San Francisco, striking out five in three scoreless innings. Yapson Gomez threw a scoreless ninth for the Giants, who used eight pitchers.

Dallas Keuchel started for the White Sox and worked the first 3 2/3 innings, surrendering four earned runs while striking out three. Alex Colomé (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

The Giants Friday optioned RHPs Melvin Adon and Conner Menez, LHP Sam Selman, INFs Chris Shaw, Abiatal Avelino and Kean Wong to the minors; RHPs Tyler Cyr, Sam Hjelle, Jake Jewell, Luis Madero, Raffi Vizcaino and Trey McNutt, LHP Sam Moll, C Ricardo Genoves, and OF Jamie Westbrook were reassigned to the minor league camp.

Halbegwachs overtime heroics give Barracuda 3-2 comeback win over Gulls

sjbarracuda.com photo

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE, Calif- Jayden Halbgewachs has a nack for scoring game winning goals in overtime. His latest extra session heroics came just 37 seconds into overtime to give the San Jose Barracuda a 3-2 comeback victory over the San Diego Gulls on Friday evening at SAP Center.

Trevor Carrick fed a pass up to Halbgewachs at the blue line. The left winger skated in and moving against the grain, threaded a backhander past Gulls goalie Anthony Stolarz for his team leading 18th goal of the season. He has scored three of the four overtime winners for the ‘Cuda and his second against San Diego this season.

San Jose have won three in a row for the first time all season. San Diego had their two-game winning streak snapped. The point they earned making it to overtime has them tied for fourth with Ontario in the Pacific Division with 64 points.

“I wish we could be having this conversation, let’s say in the beginning of November,” co-head coach Michael Chiasson said about his team’s longest win streak of the season. “But we’ll take it. From the first trip (when ) we went to Iowa, our game has really turned around. It was very helter skelter at times. But I think there’s a lot for us to build on and some stuff to be happy about,”

San Diego (28-18-6-2) drew first blood early in the first period. Justin Kloos skated out from behind the net and peppered a shot on ‘Cuda goalie Zachary Sawchenko that leaked out to Anderw Poturalski whose rebound chance was also stopped by Sawchenko. Kloos crashed the crease and cleaned up the second rebound into the back of the net for his 11th goal of the season at the 5:45 mark.

San Jose (20-27-4-2), who were out 15-11 by San Diego in the opening frame, had a short-handed chance on a 2-on-1 rush but Stolarz stood his ground and kept the puck out of his net.

The Gulls doubled their lead with a short-handed goal two minutes into the second period. Alex Broadhurst skated in on a breakwaway that Sawchenko stoned away. Broadhurst gathered the rebound and centered a pass out to Chase De Leo who buried a one-timer past Sawchenko for his ninth goal of the season at the 2:05 mark.

The Barracuda cut the lead in half late in the second period. Stolarz misplayed the puck that saw two attempts at an empty net sail high and wide by Sasha Chmelevski and Halbgewachs. Chmelevski retrieved the puck along the left boards and quickly turned around and fired a shot on net that beat the Gulls netminder on the shortside for his 11th goal at the 18:05 mark.

San Jose rode that momentum until the final six seconds of the middle frame. Holding possession inside the Gulls zone, Nikolai Knyzhov sent a cross ice pass along the point over to Nick DeSimone. The New York state native then snapped home a wrist shot past Stolarz for the equalizer and his fifth goal of the season with just six seconds left in the period.

“Desi (DeSimone) has done a really good job here the last five or six games. His game is starting to trend back in that direction. We’re at a point right now where guys have to continue to do that for themselves and Desi has put himself in that situation,” said Chiasson.

DeSimone has scored in back-to-back games and continued his point steak to four games for San Jose.

“I definitely had a long dry spell there,” said DeSimone when asked about his current point streak. “That’s always tough. You kinda wonder when it’s going to end. Offense is gonna come so you try not to worry about it too much but you know it’s always back there.”

San Diego had the ice tited in their favor in the second period outshooting San Jose 13-8. Yet they headed into the second intermission deadlocked after the ‘Cuda’s two goals in a span of 1:48.

Sawchenko (6-4-2) finished the evening with a career high 42 saves on 44 shots to earn his sixth victory of the season. Stolarz made 24 saves on 27 shots in the losing effort.

“I’ll be honest, my rebound control wasn’t great tonight. The D-core and the forwards came back and took away those second chances. That was huge. I tried to weather the storm the best I could,” said Sawchenko.

The third period featured descent scoring chances by both teams but neither could end the game in regulation. San Diego out shot San Jose 16-7.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 0-for-3 on the power play. San Diego went 0-for-5.

Tevor Carrick played in his 400th professional game (393 AHL, 7 NHL).

‘Cuda defenseman Michael Downing played in his 100th AHL game.

Danil Yutaykin returned to the lineup after missing the last three games with an upper body injury.

San Jose wore a cowboy themed specialty jersey in honor of “Cuda Country Night”. A Roy Sommer bobblehead was given away to the first 4,000 fans. Sommer and his son Mo performed the ceremonial faceoff before the game.

The announced attendance was 4,542.

UP NEXT: The Barracuda conclude its six-game homestand versus the Gulls on Saturday 3/7 at 8:00pm at SAP Center.

Kings fall to Sixers 125-108; Kings have lost two of last five games

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings have been playing great since the All-Star break. The Kings are only 3.5 games behind the Memphis Grizzlies for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Kings looked to continue that success at home against a banged up Philadelphia 76ers team. Tip-off was set for 7PM PST at Golden 1 Center.

In the first half, the Kings really struggled to find their shot. The Kings spent most of the first half down double digits as the 76ers made the majority of their three point shots. For a traditionally poor three point shooting team, the 76ers managed to shoot 47.4% (9-19) from downtown in the first half. In contrast, the Kings only managed a 25% (2-8) clip from deep.

That discrepancy alone was enough to put the Kings behind the eight ball going into the second half down 53-63. Leading the way for the 76ers was Tobias Harris who had 19 first half points. De’Aaron Fox led the Kings in the first half with 13 points.

In the second half, the Kings continued to struggle. The 76ers outscored the Kings 33-27 in the third while the Kings couldn’t get stops. The Kings went on a few runs but ultimately couldn’t make up any ground. The Kings would start the 4th down double digits at 96-80.

In the fourth, it was more of the same for most of the quarter. The Sixers were hitting shots while the Kings weren’t and not getting stops. The Kings went on a 16-2 run in the middle of the quarter to get within six points but in the end it wouldn’t matter.

The Kings would fall to the Philadelphia 76ers by a final 125-108. It was a disappointing game for the Kings who had been playing so well of late. They would look to Saturday in Portland to get back on track.

The leading scorer for the 76ers was Tobias Harris who had 28 points. For the Kings, De’Aaron Fox led the way with 23 points and Buddy Hield was right behind with 22 points in the game.

Up Next: The Kings head to Portland to take on the Trailblazers on Saturday night.

A record-setting night for Oregon State forward Tres Tinkle sparked the Beavers past Stanford 68-65 Thursday in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis.

With the victory, Oregon State (16-13 overall, 6-11 Pac-12) is assured of a winning season, and completed a sweep of the Cardinal (20-10, 9-8) while snapping Stanford’s four-game winning streak.

Tinkle broke the OSU all-time scoring record with a game-high 23 points. He passed Gary Payton, who scored 2,172 points for the Beavers. Tinkle has scored 2,190 points (seventh in Pac-12 history) and has one game left to play.

In addition, Tinkle was 6 of 6 from the free throw line in the final 1:25 as the Beavers held on after rallying from a 30-26 deficit in the final two minutes.

Etan Thompson was next on the Beaver scoring list with 15 and Zach Reichle added 10. Thompson also had five rebounds and five assists, a steal and a block. Kylor Kelley contributed nine points and seven rebounds for the Beavers,

Bryce Wills led a balanced Cardinal attack with 16 points, followed by Oscar da Silva with 14, Tyrell Terry with 13, Daejon Davis with 10 and Jaiden Delaire with nine.

Terry also had 10 rebounds and five assists; Davis had five boards and three steals.

Oregon State shot 43.8 percent from the field (21 of 48, 8 of 20 3-pointers), while the Cardinal finished with a 44.6 shooting percentage (3 of 15 behind the arc).

The Beavers led 34-32 at halftime, and forged a 9-2 run to open the second half.

A Terry jumper put Stanford up 65-64 with 33 seconds to play. Two free throws by Tinkle put Oregon State back ahead at 66-65 with 17.6 left.

The Cardinal called a time out after advancing the ball to midcourt with 3.1 seconds remaining. Isaac White’s 3-point attempt rimmed out at the buzzer.

Stanford needs a win at No. 13 Oregon on Saturday to help make its case for an NCAA tournament bid. The Cardinal haven’t played in the Big Dance since 2014.
